The Malebox reviews – Just Gotta Say by Laura Kaye

Just gotta say

The Malebox is BACK with a very special guest reviewer!

It has been a while, but The Malebox is back for a review and this time I have brought the enchanting Author Natalie Ward with me.

Now that I have a real life author reviewing with me, I thought I best do a serious and thought provoking review.

That was until the TotallyBooked girls gave me “Just Gotta Say” by Laura Kaye.

For those of you who have read this short story, you will understand my dilemma, for those of you who haven’t, get on and buy it.

If I didn’t know better, I’d think TB are doing this to me on purpose. (J&G: Who us? Never! *giggles*) So it was decision time for MB.

Do a serious review and impress Natalie with my wide and impressive knowledge of literature or stay old school…I opted for old school…please review again with me Natalie…!

It features Lucas, Noah, Jack and Callie who are roommates and the best of friends. It’s the everyday story of boy meets girl, guy meets guy, all guys like girl; girl likes all 3 guys and ends up in a gangbang. What a great concept. Laura Kaye, us male readers salute you!

Callie has always liked these 3 men and one night when she has some alone time she decides to try out a few recent sex shop purchases and stick on a movie.

All I will say is, I knew it!!  Women do like porn, and when their partners are out they love nothing more than a bit of sex toy action whilst watching porn.  Us red blooded men have always known this, but it is nice to actually see it in writing and have it confirmed.

If I am being honest, for me, the book could have stopped at the end of this scene and I would have been more than happy.  But we’re then treated to the 3 boys coming home and discovering Callie in a compromising state of sexual pleasure. Oh what to do, I know,  lets have a foursome…brilliant idea. The rest is history…

Although the story is short, there is an underlying romantic story running throughout, which I will not spoil.

I was hoping to impress Natalie with my extensive range of knowledge surrounding characterisation and visualisation, however we ended up discussing the magical and mysterious phenomenon known as the vagina and men’s eagerness to “claim it” as theirs.

It is not enough that we own your mind, body and soul, we need to know that that  pussy is ours too damn it!

According to Natalie, us men own none of these things and you women just let us think we do. This may go some way to explaining how occasionally during playtime, we need to ask you to confirm that you know that it is ours too.

This is the magical pussy concept.  We don’t do this over other things like credit cards or food; you don’t hear us say: “Tell me, say it, just say it, who does that chocolate bar belong to, it’s mine, say it.”  This is all down to the magical pussy phenomenon.

Being male, I do understand this, but struggle to find its relevance in a group sex scenario. If my female partner was being taken by 3 guys at once, it is every man for himself and it’s not a place to start saying you can touch this but you can’t touch that; it would all get very complicated and I would definitely need some sort of briefing before I just dived in…

In closing, even though it is a very short read, it was  enjoyable and entertaining…anyway, I am off to find Callie and ask her to marry me..

Gitte: 4.5 Stars

Jenny:  Well Gitte, I don’t know about you but I’m nursing an emotional hangover even after talking AR through with you after we finished it.   I felt like I was reading this with a piece of concrete sitting on my chest, my heart felt so heavy.   I think I felt every conflicted emotion Lily experienced, and even though it drained me, I loved that it made me feel so much.

Gitte: Absolutely Jenny, I don’t think I have felt so emotionally drained in a while after finishing a book. The only thing I can liken it to is the feeling of melancholy, which I pretty much felt throughout the story.

Jenny:    Alice’s writing feels somewhat poetic at times.  I’ve said before that spending time in her books really does feel like I’m joining a Rolling Stones reporter on assignment.  She has a way of transporting me into the music scene and making me feel like I’m right in the thick of it.  At times it felt so real I thought I might be able to reach out and actually touch Tristan,  shout  a song request to him, it was like I was part of the crowd and it was absolutely mesmerizing.   I felt the highs and lows Lily and Tristan experienced and I felt every pitfall and disappointment they encountered.  I really was along for the ride, right beside them.

Gitte: There is something real special about Alice’s writing for sure. She has amazing originality and I’d say she really has a unique voice. The writing is intense, intelligent, questioning and extremely authentic. So much so that you have to remind yourself to slow down and catch a breath because the way her words hit you would get lost whilst it draws out the extreme of your emotions. Her descriptive writing is exact to a fault so that you see it play out in front of you.

Jenny:   I have to say though I felt the first 50% of this book did move pretty slowly and I do wish there had been a little more dialogue in the early chapters so I could have really “felt” Lily’s emotions rather than “hearing” them.  Don’t get me wrong, we are still afforded the impact of Lily’s feelings through her inner dialogue, we still experience her  confusion, passion, desolation, sadness and her occasional highs, but I would have loved to have seen her verbalize to Tristan a little more of how she was/wasn’t coping.  Lily has definitely grown in this book and is slowly learning how to deal with her relationships and the people people around her more adeptly, but you really do feel her inner turmoil and struggles and  at times, her utter devastation.  Whilst she is still questioning everything about her relationship with Tristan, you do somehow feel that little by little she is making headway into understanding this complex man who has stolen her heart.  My heart absolutely ached for her throughout.  I adore Lily and and I love seeing the occasional show of strength she brings to the fore as she makes her way through this narcissistic world.

Gitte: I have to agree with you Jenny, through the first half of this book I was wondering when we were going to get to a place where we learnt more about Lily and Tristan through their dialogue and actions. It did move very slowly and I felt I wasn’t re-connecting as quickly as I wanted to, seeing as I have been hanging for this sequel. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely felt every emotion Lily felt and agonised with her. I felt her pain as her overwhelming sadness, isolation and loneliness leapt of the pages. She did have her confident and strong moments, but on the whole this girl is so lost, it’s as if she hasn’t found her place in the world and I felt completely lost with her. I despaired for how she beat herself up at times and despite being an extremely intelligent girl, her rationale at times floored me and made me tear up.

“..Empty. Waiting. Alone. And possibly forever moving on from floor to grave. Thinking like that, thinking of what could go wrong, the isolation of sitting in some perpetual shade…” – Lily

“…he’ll still be pulling the girls when you’re telling the story drunkenly to your flat mates as they creep out, leaving you passed out in your own aging memories.” – Lily

She had guts though and she really did herself justice when the situation warranted it.

“And I made up my mind that I would do everything I could to make him happy, and when it ended, as it was bound to, I’d just feel f**king lucky that I’d had any part of him in my life.” – Lily

Jenny   So Gitte, we join Lily and Tristan where AAA left off.  Lily about to join Tristan in London to report on his comeback tour.  Their relationship needs to be kept on the down low…easier said than done when you’re as famous and mysterious as rock god, Tristan Hunter.  Everyone wants a piece of him and everyone has a story to tell and it up to Lily to report and be able to decipher the truth behind all the dark rumors and innuendo that constantly surrounds Tristan.  Every step she takes reveals a little more of the the complex man who has stolen her heart, but is it everything she wants to hear? Hearing Tristan’s story through the interviews broke me at times. I felt so much for this closed off, unfathomable man.  How about you Gitte?

Gitte: I have to say that learning about Tristan second hand through her interviews; getting an insight into this enigmatic man was very emotional for me also.  One scene actually made me cry and I felt like a vital piece was uncovered and I got closer to understanding why and how. However, I have to say that I am not really any closer to understanding Lily, I am desperate to; I need to. I understand many of her actions but not her thought processes; I want to know where they came from originally…what shaped her thoughts? Her way of thinking? Her irrational paranoia? I am hoping book #3 will help me understand.

“..I’d never met someone before who was so desperate to be loved, while being loved by almost everyone he met.” – Lily about Tristan

Jenny:  Tristan Hunter, is still the complex, confusing beautiful man we met in AAA.

“and then there was the man himself.  6’2”, dark hair, long legs, a rock legend in leather, with a stare that could make you want, hard, or make you back out of the roomLily

I really do love this talented, soulful, conflicted, profoundly beautiful man.   As revelations of his past emerge and we begin deciphering the truth from the mystery that surrounds Tristan Hunter, and you feel so much compassion for him.  My heart went out to him but at the same time, he also made me so angry at him for what he put Lily through.  A time or two I felt Lily’s utter heartbreak and was pissed at him for some of the choices he made that so affected Lily.  Tristan is one confusing man.  His words and actions don’t always acquiesce and I found him a such contradiction at times.  This man has so much depth and so many demons, but these demons must be faced and released if Lily and Tristan are to be given a chance at a relationship.  Deep down he knows Lily is the woman for him, but is he willing to trust his own feelings and those of Lily’s and take the leap required  to move forward?

“That’s it.  You see all of me, but you finish at my eyes.  Like you know that’s where what you’re looking for will be” Tristan

Gitte: I think the past has made Tristan question everyone’s intentions albeit with some unfortunate exceptions which he seems to just accept if they are from his past. Tristan continues to intrigue me; he is so complex; shaped by his past. I absolutely love this guy but I cannot tell you all the reasons why because I don’t even know myself. Yes, we have the obvious of him being a talented, beautiful rock star. He is controlling to a point yet vulnerable, playful and questioning too. It is as if he wants to test Lily to the point that he feels he can reconcile his feelings and accept hers in return.  He made me cry, he made me laugh and he made me want to give him a good slap! Tristan and Lily will be forever chasing the happy ending unless they face their past, open up to each other and realise that both of their intentions, feelings and love is genuine and not self-serving.

“…there was something desperate in his touch. I held him as tightly as I could, until he finally, slowly let go. He looked at me, a world of emotion in his eyes..”

Jenny:  The run home in this book really sold it for me.  It broke me, it left me emotionally drained and it made me sad, but there were many moments of hope and I can’t wait for book three to see where Alice takes this story.  I’m looking forward to having questions answered, unraveling the intriguing Lily and demystifying the unique Tristan Hunter. I need to know that everything is going to be okay for them and that they can find their way.  Book three can’t come quick enough for me.

Gitte: The last half of the book saved this story for me. I could not stop reading and inhaled every word wanting them to reach each other on a level that would save them. My heart aches for them both and I want their hurting to stop and for them to find them-selves and each other.

Damaged Goods (New York #2) by Lainey Reese

Damaged Goods

Dominance. Submission. Murder. And that’s just before lunch.

New York, Book 2

Homicide detective Brice Marshall’s current case has him stymied and frustrated. A serial killer is slaughtering young women. After a long, fruitless day poring over the most gruesome evidence he’s ever seen, he needs a break.

Stepping into his cousin’s BDSM club is a reminder that there is another part of himself. A part that has been left empty in a life ruled by work. The fact is, he’s a Dom in search of a sub. When he bumps into Terryn, a slender redhead who’s new to the scene, her wide-eyed eagerness even in the face of her nerves attracts him like gravity.

Terryn is the sub of his dreams, with the power to ease his soul. Without warning the murder case reaches ugly tentacles into the most private part of his world—the woman he wants to claim as his own. The woman whose stubborn search for the delicate balance between sub life and independence could put her directly in the path of the killer.

Warning: This book contains BDSM play, M/F/M ménage, graphic language and a drool-worthy Dom on the hunt for a sub and a killer.

Gitte 4 stars

I loved this second book in the New York series. Damaged Goods is about Brice, the gorgeous Homicide Detective who we met in book #1 ‘A Table for Three’.

This was another erotic indulgence set in the BDSM scene but we had some serious suspense in this one with a serial killer on the loose. I actually thought the suspense plot was so much better in this story than book #1 and was really well written. It actually kept me guessing and it was woven into the romance really well and drawn out perfectly.

Brice is having a hard time on the murder case of a young vibrant girl and it’s all getting to him. Enter Cade’s BDSM club which Brice visits after an extremely stressful day at work. He wants to let go and find a willing submissive.  Brice knows he has hit the jack pot when he spots Terryn; an inexperienced redhead who immediately brings out all of Brice’s dominant instincts.

Brice is absolutely LUSH. He came across as protective, commanding and devoted; overall a gorgeous alpha male character without the arrogance! I loved him, he was a true hero!

Terryn was so adorable and genuine.  A truly likeable heroine who showed courage and allure yet was shy and honest. She had no fear of trying to get what she wanted despite the huge change of life style.

Together Brice and Terryn made perfect sense!

This is Brice and Terryn’s story however; Trev, Cade and Riley are back and we get too catch up with them a few years after we left them in book #1. We also have the fab secondary characters of Gage and Kent.

I am really looking forward to Book #3 and hope it is Gage’s story and our heroine is a certain type of Candy LOL!!

This Author sure writes an erotic and sexy story, and yes once again we do have some ménage scenes which are HOT!

Overall, I really enjoyed Damaged Goods, I was hooked straight away and I couldn’t put it down until I knew how, why and who. It did not disappoint!

A Table for Three (New York #1) by Lainey Reese

A Table for ThreeGitte: 4 stars

I have to say that if ever fiction could be real life then this is one story that I would want to be part of; because, just wow…this was pretty hot and so incredibly sexy and intense. Cade, Trevor and Riley made this reader need to go sit in the freezer many…many times throughout!

A Table for Three was not just about the erotic hot factor though, it did have a story too, however for me it was more of a pure indulgence read as opposed to an emotional one! Oh and I sure learnt a thing or two about just how many ways a three way goes LOL!

We join Riley who arrives in New York after accepting a job offer there.  She has dreamed of this for a long time so on her first night there she decides to go out and explore. Riley asks a cab driver to take her to the most exclusive club in town. The cab driver is sweet, he made me laugh but it was like feeding her to the lions when he dropped her off at this particular club. Sweet adorable slightly naïve Riley has no idea what she is walking into. That’s right, she walks straight into Cade’s BDSM club where Cade is not too happy about finding her as she does not fit in and looks way to innocent.

So this is where one crazy and hot journey starts as Cade who is a dominant immediately falls for Riley’s submissive and innocent nature and realises she is perfect for him to share with his best friend Trev who is a dominant too. That’s right I said share!!  Cade and Trev are best buddies. They have a long history but as friends only! There is nothing but love and they want to find the perfect girl to share, love and protect.

After a quickie in this funky booth in the club Cade has an intense feeling that Riley is the one not just a one off and knows he has to convince her to be part of his and Trev’s life.

Riley, bless her, has no idea what she is getting into and feels naturally overwhelmed yet she feels safe and surprised at how easily she fits into a life with two handsome and easy to love men.

Now Cade and Trev are LUSH. We have two hot alpha males who are good people too. They live and love passionately and fiercely. They know exactly what they want and they will use every yummy trick in the book to get it and they want Riley as their forever girl. I fell in complete lust with both men and I have to say I really liked Riley too and yes I was just a tad jealous!

I have to say, the scene where Trev sees Riley for the first time, asleep in the bed and the way in which an awestruck Cade reveals who he found really touched me. Their love for her was evident as the story progressed and the ending was a proper awww moment!

There is suspense in this story too; we had scheming, attempted murder and the nasty trait of evil jealousy. I have to say though that the suspense could have featured and explored a bit more in this story than it was, in the sense that more could have been made of it. However, it didn’t spoil the read for me. Oh and we get to meet Brice (and oh how we meet him!) who gets the next book in this series. I cannot wait to read that one!

An ARC was received for an honest review

Marie doesn’t need a complication like Horse. The massive, tattooed, badass biker who shows up at her brother’s house one afternoon doesn’t agree. He wants Marie on his bike and in his bed. Now.

But Marie just left her abusive jerk of an ex-husband and she’s not looking for a new man. Especially one like Horse—she doesn’t know his real name or where he lives, she’s ninety percent certain he’s a criminal and that the “business” he talks with her brother isn’t website design. She needs him out of her life, which would be a snap if he’d just stop giving her mind-blowing orgasms.

Horse is part of the Reapers Motorcycle Club, and when he wants something, he takes it. What he wants is Marie, but she’s not interested in becoming “property of”.

Then her brother steals from the club. Marie can save him by giving Horse what he wants—at home, in public, on his bike… If she’s a very, very good girl, she’ll get lots more of those orgasms only he can offer, and he’ll let her brother live.

Gitte: 4.5/5.0 stars

Jenny: 4.5 /5.0 stars

Gitte: I am almost speechless with surprise. I LOVE how you pick a book up not knowing anything about it and find yourself lost to the outside world as you devour it almost in one sitting. I got lost in this book completely and could not put it down! This Author is new to me and I fell in love with her writing and her characters. Reaper’s Property has got hot kick-arse bikers, action, suspense and it is HOT! Oh and we get to hear both our hero’s and our heroine’s voice and each were written flawlessly I thought. Yeah and we have a new book boyfriend don’t we Jenny and his name is *cough* Horse for yes obvious reasons!

“So why are you called Horse?” “’Cause I’m hung like one,” he replied, smirking.”

Jenny:  Giddy up indeed!  What a coincidence….I highlighted that quote as well hehe.

You’re so right! When this one came up in my GR feed,  I saw the words “hot, tattooed, alpha biker” and that was enough to get our 1Click fingers springing into action! Going in sight unseen, knowing nothing about this book really did turn out to be an added bonus. We do love our hot bikers Gitte, and being an absolute sucker for anything SOA, this book certainly didn’t disappoint!  At all! I was the same as you; I couldn’t stop reading this and finished it in one sitting. Loved the heroine, Marie, and Horse…..good grief, do not get me started on that man! In fact all the characters in this book added so much to the story.  Oh and you are so right Gitte,  we most definitely do have a new book boyfriend and how! Hmmm did we mention his *ahem* attributes!

I felt his giant, erect penis poking my ass. “Horse” indeed.” Marie

Gitte:  This story is set in the biker world, but not a glorified prettified one, more like the ugly, gritty and yes pretty scary one.  It’s all about Marie and Horse (sigh) who meet through her brother’s dodgy dealings with The Reaper’s MC. There is an instant chemistry between them but not your standard insta love or attraction and their beginnings can’t really be classed as great either.

Jenny:  This was such a departure from the books we’ve read recently and for me it was the grittiness of this book that so appealed to me.  I had no idea what to expect going into it and found the raw reality of life among the Reaper’s MC, whilst it isn’t always pretty, sure did make compelling reading and……. I. LOVED. EVERY. MINUTE! The dialogue is edgy and I was absolutely immersed in the world of these non conformist bikers, who live by their rules, live their way, together with the violence, sex and a turbulent love story between two characters had me absolutely gripped  from start to finish.

“This pussy is mine.  You are mine.  I’ll f**k you when and where I want, and you can either take it or get the f**k out.  Are we clear?” Horse

Gitte:  Hahaha I loved all the characters in this story Jenny, they sure didn’t mince their words! So we have our heroine, Marie. I actually really liked her. I thought she had a good head on her shoulders, there was nothing annoying about her and she was not a doormat in any sense of the word. Rather she questioned and she stood her ground. She hasn’t had a charmed life yet she makes the best of what she has and knows she is worth more and can make a better life for herself. Her only weakness is confusing to her but she cannot keep away from Horse, she is in awe, lust and fear of him, all at the same time. My favourite Marie scene is her “Kill Bill” moment…I had to re-read it as she was FIERCE!!!

Jenny:  Ummm no mincing words at all and didn’t we love that about it! Marie was such a great character.  Strong, loyal, pretty bad ass herself at times, with a vulnerable side that really endeared her to me.  She recently left her abusive creep of a husband and the last thing she wants is another man complicating her life.  Especially a man like Horse…sigh… who has “warning” written all over him.  She doesn’t know his real name or where he lives, she’s pretty sure he’s involved in some sort of criminal activity and she needs him out of her life.  But Horse is a hard man to deny, and he’s not an easy man to dissuade. Horse evokes feelings in Marie she certainly can’t deny.  Every look, every touch sets her on fire and provokes a lust in her beyond anything she could have imagined, not to mention the orgasms that are out of this world!

“I dropped my hands, accidentally grazing his erection.  I jerked my hand away, embarrassed, but he grabbed it and pulled it back, rubbing it up and down his length.
“Missed that babe” he said.

Gitte:  Sigh….now as for Horse…seriously I defy anyone not to fall in complete lust with this tall, tattooed arrogant, possessive, bad arse biker! When we are first introduced to Horse he is an enigma and I didn’t know whether to love him or hate him, but I knew I wanted him LOL! He is rough, tough and mean but he has this sweet (yeah he really does) side to him. And he absolutely knows what to do to make a woman scream his name that’s for sure! His methods of ‘wooing’ Marie are obnoxious and cave man like (for reasons we find out later) but the intentions honourable and fiercely protective. He loves with passion.

“Someday,” he whispered softly in my ear. “I don’t want to hurt you. Not until you’re ready for me… But someday I’m going to own all of you, Marie. You’re all mine, babe. Knew it the first time I saw you. Couldn’t give you up if I tried.”

However, I could see how Marie thought he had multiple personalities at times. One minute he scared the life out of me and would make me so angry the next I melted at his feet! Yeah I absolutely LOVED him!

“I want this,” he said softly, leaning over and kissing me between the shoulder blades. “I need to own you. All of you. Make you scream and realize that you belong to me and I belong to you and nothing else matters. I can’t let you slip away from me, babe.”

Oh there were so many hot scenes that I had to read more than once Jenny….I am sure you did too!! This man….seriously!!!

Jenny:   OMG! You can bet I did Gitte! Let’s face it, how can you NOT re-read some of those **fans self** scenes!  What did I feel for this man?  I really don’t know where to start with Horse. Words fail me.  As you said, how could you not fall in absolute lust with this 6ft plus tattooed, alpha, possessive, hot , dirty talking, sex on legs biker……Oh we do love a fictional boyfriend with a dirty mouth don’t we!

“Glad you like it”
“What?” I asked, confused.
“My body, he replied, smirking.  “It’s the only one you get to look at or f**k, so it’s good the package works for you”

Dare I say, I found Horse’s cave man ways pretty hot! I know, I know….everything screamed “obnoxious pig” and I should have hated that, but then he would show us sweet Horse and I found myself melting. I loved everything that came out of his mouth…..oh yes,  I loved everything about this guy …… his obnoxious side, his sweet side, his passionate side and even his fierce and violent side – they all made up the man that was Horse.

He did give Marie whiplash at times with his hot and cold behavior and he certainly gave her reason to question him.  He really could be like night and day, but Marie soon figured him out and I loved the humor between these two and how she tested him and stood up to him.  She knew her place, but she was certainly no pushover and Horse respected her for that.

“You’re a pig, I whispered back. “you know that, right?”
“So far bein’ a pig works for me babe”

Gitte:  So overall, I thought this was a FAB read. I enjoyed every word and I loved the characters. I loved the setting and the gritty and raw atmosphere. Yes I was shocked at times at the roughness in many aspects but I loved it nevertheless and found it thrilling and intensely addictive. I want more!!

Jenny: Couldn’t agree more.  I had no idea what to expect from this book,  the grittiness, whilst it did take me aback at times, was a real departure and only added to my overall enjoyment of this read.  I felt like I was living in the moment, I devoured everything about  the world we were transported to and basically, I want more!  This was one gritty, erotic, sexy and nail biting read! Loved every minute and yes…..completely addictive!
