Sinning never felt so good…A fortuitous encounter.
A meeting that should never have happened.
Many years ago, two children from completely different worlds forged a connection, a fateful connection, an unbreakable bond that would change their lives forever…
Salome knows only one way to live—under Prophet David’s rule. In the commune she calls home, Salome knows nothing of life beyond her strict faith, nor of life beyond the Fence—the fence that cages her, keeps her trapped in an endless cycle of misery. A life she believes she is destined to always lead, until a horrific event sets her free.
Fleeing the absolute safety of all she has ever known, Salome is thrust into the world outside, a frightening world full of uncertainty and sin; into the protective arms of a person she believed she would never see again.
River ‘Styx’ Nash knows one thing for certain in life—he was born and bred to wear a cut. Raised in a turbulent world of sex, Harleys, and drugs, Styx, unexpectedly has the heavy burden of the Hades Hangmen gavel thrust upon him, and all at the ripe old age of twenty-six—much to his rivals’ delight.
Haunted by a crushing speech impediment, Styx quickly learns to deal with his haters. Powerful fists, an iron jaw and the skillful use of his treasured German blade has earned him a fearsome reputation as a man not to be messed with in the shadowy world of outlaw MC’s. A reputation that successfully keeps most people far, far away.
Styx has one rule in life—never let anyone get too close. It’s a plan that he has stuck to for years, that is, until a young woman is found injured on his lot… a woman who looks uncannily familiar, a woman who clearly does not belong in his world, yet a woman he feels reluctant to let go…

“Live free, ride free, die free!”
Gitte: Wow, yeah really, wow! Tillie Cole has just proven how brilliantly versatile she is. What a fan-bloody-tastic Author she truly is to have us reduced to hysterical laughter in her previous work to downright hysterical sobbing in It Ain’t Me, Babe. This story touches every part of your being, emotionally. It breaks your heart into tiny fragments as the words of this Author creates such a vivid and real picture of a subject that is so complex; so taboo. Your heart will be left shattered and exhausted only to soar in hopeful flight the next.
“I have only ever liked one boy in my life. I have only wanted one man to have as my own. I have only ever had one dream…” – Mae
I cannot explain in words how much I loved the story of Styx and Mae; how much I loved these characters, who both took a huge piece of my heart. I was not prepared to feel, to despair to fall in love to this magnitude nor be so deeply engrossed as I truly was and did. This is not just a biker book nor a simple story of a man who falls in love with a woman.
‘He distracted me from the pain. He had been a light in my moment of darkness..’ – Mae
This story is not just words on a page; this is a moving picture that’s been created with love, care and attention. This story is so much more than what it seems.
‘There is nothing on the outside but deceit, sin and death..’
Wow, Jenny, we really went through the ringer here didn’t we?!
Jenny: Oh my goodness. Will the real Tillie Cole please stand up! What a departure It Ain’t Me, Babe is from her other works! This book certainly highlights the unique and versatile talent of an author whose work we’ve come to love since giggling ourselves silly through Eternally North and I was addicted. It Ain’t Me, Babe was powerful, raw, gritty, heartbreaking, shocking, yet hopeful and very emotional. A thought provoking read that left me reeling. Tillie Cole certainly didn’t pull any punches with this story and pull us back and forth through that wringer she certainly did. Gitte, you’re so right, this most definitely is not a mere MC book. It’s so, so much more and I loved every minute!
“Life’s hard. Death’s even harder. No use sugar coatin’ that shit.”
Styx and Mae’s story dragged me in from the start. They were both such fascinating characters in their own right, but together they took on a whole new depth. They shouldn’t have worked but Tillie Cole managed to bring them to life in a way that had me believing in them and feeling their story with them.
“You and me grew up in hell…darkness. She was the first bit of good I ever saw.”
This author painted a picture…. a gripping, uncompromising and heartfelt picture that I won’t forget. She gave me characters who invaded my thoughts and my heart long after finishing.
Gitte: Touching a subject so challenging and sensitive is not an easy feat but the way in which Tillie Cole wove together different elements of society into such a intricate storyline was nothing short of outstanding. So powerful, so heart-breaking and it truly beggars belief. Yet sadly, we know this happens. She created such multi-faceted characters who truly came alive and felt so incredibly real and true to who they ultimately were. It created something unique, something refreshing. It was like a breath of fresh air, even though my breath was laboured and troubled whilst reading. As for Styx, wow what a man. WHAT A MAN!!!
‘We were always fated to be together. He is my everything. He is my entire world…my salvation.’
He’s up there with my all-time favourite male book characters. And Flame…well if I could beg and plead I would, for Tillie to please write his story; he fascinated me beyond words! Bring on more right, Jenny?!
Jenny: Tillie Cole managed to effortlessly portray a touching love story set amidst the chaos and mayhem of a MC Club, in the shadow of a tough and sensitive subject of a religious Cult where the line between good and evil are well and truly blurred .
“You have a light within you, Styx, and I feel it shining through like the rays of the midday sun. It is beautiful. You are a good man.”
The author took us inside a rough and brutal MC Club where loyalty is paramount, where bonds are not formed of the blood running through your veins, but the bonds of brotherhood. It’s a world where men display their most primal and unrestrained urges, who are a law unto themselves and where protecting what’s theirs is priority, and the world she has depicted is unapologetic and raw. I loved everything about this book. The harrowing account of the Cult was chilling. Her trademark humour was expressed via the camaraderie between the brothers and especially between Ky and Styx, their relationship really was special. This is a story where we learn that hope, trust, salvation and love can be found in the most unexpected of places and the heart stopping drama and suspense kept me on the edge of my seat!
“You live in hell long enough, babe, you become a sinner too.”
As for Styx…Wow! Gitte what a man indeed! I can’t even begin to express how much I loved him and agree, he’d have to be up there as one of my favourites as well. Oh and Tillie, if you’re reading this I really need Ky’s story! NOW!! Either way, just so you know, we both need MORE!
