Book one of the After Dark, Series

Dr. Angeline Hemming is a beautiful, sassy, no-nonsense type of girl who has risen from a difficult past to become one of Chicago’s most successful and respected criminal profilers. In exchange for free commercials to promote her favorite charitable causes, Angel answers calls and gives relationship advice on a Friday night radio program.

Alexander Avery is a gorgeous and successful corporate genius who doesn’t believe in love. When his girlfriend-of-convenience calls into Angel’s program, he is furious with the show’s host who doles out (what he considers) blind advice, without knowing all the facts… and he decides to give her a piece of his mind, and his side of the story!

When Angel informs Alex he’s the one in need of a much-deserved lesson, all hell breaks loose as these two type-A personalities battle it out for control over minds and hearts, and yes, in bed. Not only are they fighting each other at every turn, but they are also struggling to uphold the convictions they each live by.

It’s unclear who is stronger, but both must discover that to get what they desperately want, they may have to give a little… or a lot.

Gitte: So we’ve had this one on our kindles for a while haven’t we, Jenny and we’ve been missing out that’s for sure. The writing was ‘spot on’ flawless; the characters written with such precision and attention to detail. The atmosphere of the story was brilliant too as were the other characters who I really enjoyed. I laughed at the hilarious banter, I swooned at the romantic passion and I felt the emotion of the hurt and darkness lurking within.

‘You leave me defenceless…it’s like I’m drowning, grasping and clawing for every breath.’

What a slow building luscious intro to a new series with a fabulous strong kick arse heroine who also has a sweet broken side and a very commanding presence.

“She’s gonna chew him up and spit him out. I love it.”

I loved the fact that Angeline was an honest, intelligent ‘no nonsense’ woman. She knows who she is and what she wants, despite a few issues as a consequence of heartbreak in her past. Her reluctance to give her heart fully was understandable and whilst her indecision towards the end started to grate on me a little; it never became a huge issue for me.

Jenny:  All I can think about at this moment is Alexander Avery. Swoon city! Boy am I glad we finally took the plunge to meet the divine Mr Avery because we sure have been missing out…on both the story and this delectable man!

“When we’re together like this, all I want to do is feel. There is no other choice.”

I was pulled into Angel After Dark from the very beginning Gitte and loved how the author slowly and teasingly led us in to Alex and Angel’s story which was mixed with a bit of mystery, suspense and lots of sexual chemistry, all with the promise of more to come! I relished the deliciously flirty and naughty banter which was like a form of foreplay between two sexy and sassy characters. I couldn’t help but become engulfed in the passion and humour between two people who were completely taken aback by their sizzling connection.

“Do you have anything real? Has anyone ever touched you on a deeper level? Motivated you to really want? Want so much with your heart and body that it left you literally aching….?”

Angeline was very much her own woman and a woman of many layers too. As sweet as she was tough, she was successful, kind, resilient and although like you her indecision did grate a little…really? How could you second guess yourself with this man?  However, once we got to the gist of Angeline’s back story I understood her reluctance and admired her for what she had made of herself.

Gitte: Then there’s Alex, our hero, who let’s face it, has just about everything you’d desire in a book boyfriend! I fell in love with this guy and at times I just couldn’t understand Angel’s hesitation but then at the same time I respected the hell out of her for it. Don’t think I could have been that strong to resist!

“…damn it, he was funny and sexy and brilliant. Lethal.”

The sexual tension, the emotional connection and the comedic stand-off between Alex and Angel was fab; I loved it! What a journey for both of them on their individual path in life as well as the one they reluctantly embark upon together.

“Why do you want to break me? Make me lose control? Lose myself?”

My favourite scenes has to be the radio ones which set the ball rolling. I was in stitches and thought the writing was class! There was also a threat and suspense simmering in the background which I can’t wait to get my teeth into in book #2…wait hang on, that’s Alex I can’t……I of course mean that I can’t wait to experience the action and drama which I’m sure will explode….oh wait, that would also be Alex or me…or both…… I’m going to stop here I think!

“I don’t want you to lose yourself, honey. I’m trying to find you. To keep you with me.”

As for cliff-hangers, in my opinion I thought this was a walk in the park, though I am gagging to find out how the suspenseful drama will unfold and what happens next. Do you agree, Jenny?

Jenny:  No thinking needed my book soulmate,  I completely share your befuddlement.   I can’t form a coherent thought every time I think about the sexy, sensual, successful and totally scrumptious Alex. This is one determined man in business and in pleasure, providing it’s on a purely physical level that is because Alex doesn’t have time for complications or emotions in his relationships . I admit that I fell in insta love with him and my feelings only intensified as the story progressed.

“Just kiss me. I need you to kiss me. Give in to this.”

Angel’s a better woman than me because I couldn’t have shown such fortitude in attempting to resist this man’s advances. He would have had me at hello! But as you said, I understood her reasoning’s and respected them.

“Baby, I’m right here, too.”

I loved how Kahlen Aymes set the groundwork in this first book. She allowed us to dip our toes in just enough without getting completely wet and I feel there is much to uncover in Confessions After Dark.  I completely agree with you about the ending Gitte. It was done splendidly and left me anticipating the next book all the more. More Alex…yipppeeee! More great story, more drama, more intrigue and suspense, more passion….….like you said….mmmmmmm more Alex. I can’t wait to see how this story unfolds.

can't go without

“What’s the one thing you can’t go without?”

Tristan O’Donnell has money, women, and all the luxuries that cold hard cash can buy. Tristan’s been sucking sunshine right from the monogrammed silver spoon his life was served up on since the day he was born. And quite frankly, he wouldn’t want it any other way. He’s his mother’s pride and joy, his father’s right-hand-man, and the envy of every guy around. All Tristan has to do is flash his million dollar smile, give his trademark wink, and he gets what he wants, when he wants, anytime he wants.

Leah Franchetti grinds her fingers to the bone; sculpting, painting, recreating treasures from trash—the very sentiment that defines her life. Her inventive, vindictive, lucrative, and seemingly unforgivable plan allowed her to shortcut her way into the life she always imagined, owning an art gallery, surrounding herself in the comfort of her passion and dreams.

When circumstances force Leah and Tristan to come face-to-face with the past and with Leah’s devious manipulation, truths come flooding forth, destroying those in the present and possibly jeopardizing both of their highly anticipated futures.

Can Tristan overcome Leah’s slander and deception—despite how dangerously close he comes to losing the one thing he can’t go without—money? Will Leah be forced to come clean, knowing she’ll have to live her life with the one thing she can’t go without—her dignity?

Jenny:  I’ll hold my hand up and admit that when we became reacquainted with Tristan O’Donnell at the start of Can’t Go Without, I did wonder how on earth I was going to enjoy his story because…well…he came across as an absolute arrogant cockhead. I thought I would struggle through this story because of him but as it turned out, Tristan became the saving grace for me. Whilst he may not have endeared himself to me in the beginning, Angelisa Stone did the unthinkable (well in my book anyway) and managed to completely change my mind about a character and she did this without compromising the essence of who Tristan was! Well done!  In fact, she didn’t just change my mind….she had me falling desperately in love with Tristan and feeling his pain. There were times my heart actually bled for him in parts of this story.

‘Tristan O’Donnell’s life was created, but it was not created with love and tenderness, it was created with regret and remorse.’

Angelisa Stone writes with a lot of emotion and humour in her stories. This author can have me in a flood of tears one minute and grinning through her witty one liners the next.  So yeah, despite a couple of misgivings, this book turned out to be a winner! Did you wonder how we were going to get through Can’t Go Without at first Gitte?

Gitte: Tristan ‘arsehole’ O’Donnell….I was livid with him and just couldn’t see myself warming to him or even enjoying his story. Then absolutely, Angelisa weaved her magic and slowly I fell in love with this guy. From spit hopping mad to crying for him; not many Authors have created a character I disliked so intensely only to fall in complete love with. This as a consequence of complete redemption whilst still holding on to an air of arrogance. I have to applaud this Author for writing a character who’s so fucked up yet whilst we slowly learn of the whys get a glimpse of the true person and see his heart of pure gold. Tristan never lost his bad-arsedness nor did he lose any of his appealing cockiness; he just lost the shitty baggage that made him a tosser!

“Time heals all wounds.” Fuck that. That person must’ve never experienced a wound that cuts so deep, so severely that the wound will never, ever heal…”

I agree wholeheartedly Jenny, Angelisa Stone is a brilliant writer. The humour, the drama and the intensity is spot on and I felt every emotion in every word. Whilst I loved many aspects of this story and marvelled at how my emotions and feeling played out, there was a couple of scenes that absolutely broke my heart. I cried buckets! You know what I’m talking about, Jenny don’t you?!

Jenny:  Oh my goodness Gitte. I know exactly the scene you’re talking about.  That scene brought me to my knees. I was so overcome with emotion for Tristan – I tell you, that scene wrecked me. I cried for him and I became enraged at those responsible for the wrong doings aimed at this man. Oh sure, he was a cocky, self-assured arse who lacked any sort of filter who did need pulling down to earth,  but he hid behind a heart full of pain that made him feel so unworthy and he didn’t deserve what had been dealt him.  It was cruel and unforgivable in my book and my heart really did go out to him.

“You wrecked him. You wrecked us. Tristan has changed so much these past three years. I don’t even know that guy in there anymore.”

My misgivings towards the story lay with Leah. I couldn’t completely connect to her and I felt she got off waaaaaay too easy and no one, not Leah nor Tristan’s family appeared to feel any remorse for their actions towards Tristan which infuriated me to the point where I wondered if I could continue. I expected more from Adrian, and his actions really baffled and annoyed me. However, I’m glad I pushed on because Angelisa Stone gave me a character who showed us that love and belonging is possible if you open your heart.  Yep, I did enjoy his story!  I know you were pretty pissed at some of the actions of these characters G as we did discuss them at length!

Gitte: I disliked Leah immensely; sorry but at times in this story I had to put this book down thinking to myself…how can I continue reading this? Did she redeem herself in my eyes? No, sorry she didn’t. I had a huge problem with her action which caused the crux of this story. She got away with it way too easy in my opinion. Also, the actions of Dre and Kathryn, bloody hell, seriously? I loved Dre in book #1, now? Not so much, what a complete tool! Sorry but I just can’t explain how mad I am for how far this was. The reason for why, very incomprehensible! We’re talking siblings here and the seriousness of the claim, well, it made me feel pissed off because this sadly does happen in real life! I don’t know what to say Jenny, so I think I’ll stop here!

‘The future just grabbed on to the past, and yanked with all its might to meet right in the middle of the present.’

So, my problem was quite a biggie and you’d think I couldn’t get back from that right? Wrong, one character outshone the huge issue I had. Yep, one character’s growth and self-discovery saved this story for me, that and the fantastic writing. The journey, the heartbreak and the humour was excellent and kept me reading. The emotion was quite staggering at times and Piper played a huge part in this.

“Tristan. My big brother is what’s good in this world.”

Her and Tristan had some incredibly emotional scenes together both past and present that had me in tears. So well played Angelisa Stone; Tristan saved the day, seriously love this man!

LOCK & KEY (One Eyed Jacks MC #1)by CAT PORTER

lock & Key cover

Love not only stings when you lose it, when it’s ripped away, but when it first sinks its teeth into you, it can cut just as raw and sting just as deep.

Unfortunately, I had forgotten that.

I was allegedly South Dakota’s most famous Old Lady.
Fifteen years ago I had survived my Old Man’s murder
and swore to myself never again.
Never again surrender my heart.
Never again sacrifice to the Club.
But that all changed in one night.

I came home and crashed into him,
and my past and present blew up in my face.
Both of us lonely, running on empty, and unwilling to admit it.
Until now.
I feel things I’d forgotten about, want things I had cut out of my insides.

Who holds the keys to betrayal? To suspicion? To trust?
To brotherhood? To family?
To a bleeding heart?
Right now, I just might.
I suppose some of us have to get really dirty before we can become truly clean.

“Change is always good. Keeps the blood flowing right?”

Gitte: Change certainly is good and this MC book was a refreshing change at that. Why? Because our hero; Miller and our Heroine; Grace were older than what we’re used to which I absolutely loved! Not only that, Lock and Key was one of the best MC books I’ve read. It had such drama, passion, intrigue and suspense. It sure was a long book, but at no point did I want to skim or did I feel that anything written was superfluous to the story. In fact, I devoured every single word. There were so many surprises along the way that completely threw me and I loved the snippets from the past as well as the dual POV. The passion, love, redemption and heartbreak in Lock and Key was extremely intense. I felt every single emotion of our hero and heroine.

“No more ghosts, new dreams. Get on with joy…”

The second stab at love, the opening up of hearts; revealing everything underneath the amount of layers and perceived façade as well as the surprising twists in the romance, well it had me hook line and sinker! The romance was not only believable, it was extremely hot, at times heart-breaking yet hopeful and inspirational too. Cat Porter is one very talented Author who I can’t wait to read more from that’s for sure. You loved it too right Jenny?

Jenny: I absolutely loved Lock & Key Gitte and how utterly refreshing it was to read and relate to characters that were more mature. It was the ages of the characters that initially drew us into the story and had us both shouting a clear “yes” to accepting this author’s review request. I reveled in the chance to lose myself in a story where the characters were more mature, where their love wasn’t instant nor unbelievable.  It’s not easy to open oneself up to trust and love at any age, but even more so at Grace’s age of 42 and Cat Porter told Miller and Grace’s story with emotion, passion, heartbreak and suspense. I do love second chance love stories and this one was especially engrossing.

‘Let it be for other young lovers with a different, sweeter fate than ours.’

This author told Miller and Grace’s story the way it needed to be told. There were instances when I thought…noooo…this can’t be happening, but you remember the biker world has its own rules, its own laws and Cat Porter delivered this story warts and all. The past flashbacks and surprises revealed along the way did, at times, knock me sideways.  As the story veered towards its crescendo there were certainly things I didn’t see coming! The chaos of life in the One Eyed Jacks was gripping and having Miller’s input brought a new dimension to the story as we were able to climb inside his head and really feel what he, as well as Grace, was going through.

‘I had seen something else in her eyes. Something I recognized, because I was lugging the same shit inside my soul.’

There was certainly much to uncover from the past, a future to map out and a lot of pain to leave behind and I was completely invested in, and absolutely enjoyed this story.

Gitte: Miller….what can I say. As his story unravelled I fell more and more in love with him. This bad arse biker is truly beautiful and when we hear from his past exploits, thoughts and feelings I melted more than once and my heart both beat and broke for him. It didn’t hurt that he was incredibly sexy and so very passionate too. Oh and I should mention fiercely protective and menacing (but in a good way). Miller was the complete package for me.

“I had my dream on my hands and in my mouth, and I never fucking realized.”

Now Grace; sweet hard done by Grace. She was dealt a really shitty hand but she was one cool and hard chick when she needed to be! Her vulnerability and nurturing side was admirable and lovable and she had many insecurities and doubts. But damn does she kick arse when she needs to!

“Truth is a painful sword. It cuts deep and stings, but the pain evaporates, the blood dries, and in the place of such savagery is a gleaming absolution and an absolute purity, I’s blinding. It hurts. And it is utterly beautiful.”

I did have two issues with Lock and Key which prevented this from being a five star read for me. Grace’s biker name. I felt uncomfortable when the men she was having sexual relationships with referred to her by this name. Also, the timeline from where she meets the One-Eyed Jacks – to the point of change in her tragic circumstance – till she ‘comes home’ does not really make sense age wise. Did you feel the same, Jenny? Other than this I absolutely bloody loved Lock and Key and thought it was fantastically entertaining and sexy!

Jenny:  Oh gosh, Miller. Wow! I loved this hot, sexy biker dude who had been around the traps, lived a hard life and who had seen things that would bring most to their knees. He was emotionally closed off, but a loyal brother to his club. There were times this man broke my heart. He was very alpha and protective and yep, he was definitely the whole package for me too!

‘Oh, this quiet man had a secret beauty all his own hidden deep inside, and I wanted to uncover it. I wanted to know it. ‘

Grace was such a sexy, strong and refreshing heroine too. No messing about with this woman. She had a focus and she ensured she carried it out. This woman had to grow up fast and she did so among the chaos and mayhem of the One Eyed Jacks MC and through pain and tragedy she had experienced a life that made her such a fascinating character.

“Grace, you want real, you got to get real. And don’t tell me you don’t want real. You’ve always been about the real.”

I absolutely agree Gitte about the nickname as it did grate on me as the story progressed. It became tiresome and yes, to have her lovers refer to her by that name didn’t sit right with me either.  I too tried to get my head around the ages vs the events etc but like you, although a annoying, it didn’t overshadow what was an otherwise enthralling story. A gritty, passionate telling of second chance love, of loyalty and moving on from your past.  About not forgetting those we leave behind, but learning to move on to heal your pain. A tremendous debut novel from a very talented author. Yep, I loved it!

USE (Songs of Perdition #2) by C D REISS

This is Fiona Drazen’s story.

In the end, did I stab him to be free of him? And free to what? Fuck? Snort? Party? Or free to be normal?

It was a very interesting situation, up there on Maundy,” Elliot said.

“Nothing like it in the world. It’s a safe place for people like me.”

“People like you? Can you be more specific?” He ran his finger on the edge of his blotter, and a chill went up my inner thighs.

“People like me means, I don’t know. Fuckers. We fuck because it’s what we do. Bus drivers drive. Accountants account. Policemen police. I’m a fucker. I fuck.

Use is like taking a complete mind fuck trip into the abyss. CD Reiss uses hard hitting words like a weapon….she is able to lure you into a false sense of security using her words as a caress one minute then striking without warning the next. Her words are as exquisite as they are shocking. She manages to pull you in, tease you, taunt you and leave you gasping for more!

“I don’t want to be broken.”
He shook his head. “You don’t get to choose that.”

This story is evolving. The secrets are unfolding and there is so much we desperately want to know!

‘Everyone had a bucket inside, representing their capacity for pain. Some buckets were bigger than others and everyone maintained the overflow differently.’

Fiona will leave you exasperated, stunned, saddened and you’ll be left wondering just what the hell it was that got her to this point. Elliot….what a deep and fascinating character. We learn so much about this complex man as we begin to delve into his psyche. Deacon, wow! We saw this man in another light. Team Elliot? Team Deacon? We were so sure in Kick, now we have no bloody idea!

‘We shook hands. He looked me in the eye. Two gentlemen trying to protect the same woman, probably from each other.’

We will say this. Read the Songs of Submission series before moving onto Songs of Perdition. We feel as if we’ve cheated ourselves out of so much background information and opened ourselves to spoilers we would have rather experienced through the build-up of Songs of Submission.

CD Reiss’s writing is pure brilliance. There is no other word for it – superb. Every time we pick her stories up we know we’re in for one hell of an emotional and shocking ride. Just how we love them!

 “You’re too serious…”
“Life is serious.”

Gitte: One Night Promised had me laughing till I had tears, melt into a passionate puddle; followed by huge ugly crying. Ultimately though, it made me realise that any initial fears I may have had upon starting this new trilogy from Jodi Ellen Malpas were completely unnecessary and unfounded; my expectations were met, challenged and won over.

‘He’s no danger to me, except, maybe, to my heart.’

Jodi managed something not many have, in my opinion, which is to surpass what made me fall in love with her writing to begin with. Truly, this is exactly what Jodi did by bringing M and Livy into my life. One Night Promised was extraordinarily flawless, written with such humour, passion and beauty. The story was sexy and emotional; it was intriguing and mysterious. It was bloody fantastic!

“I know being with you will be the easiest thing that I’ve ever done.”

Every single character in this book stood out in their own right; adding humour, intrigue, friendship and love. Starting with the brilliant Nan, a character we all know and love; Nana rocks, along with her sidekick George. And Greg…sigh, we’d all love a mate like him!!

“Beautiful things should be savoured… not rushed.”

The banter, the comedy element, the emotional bonds and connection to the reader. Well it was spot on and came across effortless. How hard did we fall in love this time, Jenny?!

Jenny: We certainly did fall HARD for this one Gitte! My first thought when I started reading this story was how much Jodi Ellen Malpas has grown as a writer. Sure, the  trademark idiosyncrasies of her characters and writing is still there but something has changed, whatever it is I loved it and One Night- Promised completely eclipsed all my expectations. Jodi took a story and characters, shook them up and managed to bring us something distinctive and enthralling and in the process showed us what a talent she by grabbing us and hooking us into this new trilogy!

“I want to drown in you, Livy.”

One Night – Promised was captivating, heart-breaking, intriguing, emotional, passionate and consuming. There really wasn’t anything I didn’t like about this story or the writing – everything was faultless. It flowed beautifully and it was effortless to read. Oh and I certainly sobbed a time or two. I think I experienced just about every emotion possible throughout this story!

‘It was a catch twenty two situation – fall asleep and have nightmares, or stay awake and live them.’

Oh Nan! What a fantastic and amusing character she was. In fact, as you said, all characters were essential and each played their part in making this story such an overwhelming success. From the camaraderie of friendship, the love of family and the gripping and passionate relationship between M and Livy.  The characters and their words were superb!!

Gitte: Now Livy, what can I say? She’s become one of my favourite heroines out there. She’s incredibly vulnerable yet has an inner strength and resoluteness that makes her extremely lovable and admirable. She’s got a brilliant sense of humour, she’s sweet, quirky and so very real. I completely connected with her and have to say that she very quickly found a place in my heart!

“You are my perfect.”… “I have to have you…”

This girl is no pushover, she stands up for herself, falls in love despite her best intentions, she understands and accepts her limitations and weaknesses. Livy’s not had it easy, hence she’s made some consequential mistakes, a combination of which has marked her and is shaping her life. A life that’s suddenly changing after just one night….

“Promise me you won’t abandon me..”

M is fascinating, he’s powerful, vulnerable, very lovable, endearing, beautiful, mysterious, supremely sexy, mesmerizing and so very charming. Need me to go on? Didn’t think so! I fell in love, I fell in lust and I fell at his feet! M is not This Man. M is THE man and I desperately want and need more of him!

“Every time I touch you I feel I need to do it with the utmost care…”

The beginning to M & Livy’s story was surprising, humorous, captivating, passionate and addictive. It was the beginning of something that I know is going to be pretty amazing, right Jenny?

Jenny:  Livy was a brilliant character and I adored her. I felt so much empathy towards her and in the same breath I admired the grit and determination she displayed, and her sweetness and susceptibility had me wanting to protect her.  I agree Gitte, she may just be one of my favourite heroines.

‘He may make me feel alive, but he makes me feel lifeless just as quickly.’

M. What a brilliant character!  Helllooo new book boyfriend! I’m going to say this first off…..I loved M more than Jesse Ward. There. It’s out there. There was something so unique about his character, something so positively captivating! Possessing a masculine prowess, he was mysterious, alluring, irresistible, sensual and charismatic man who left me with an overwhelming desire to learn more about him!!! I agree Gitte…I was intoxicated with love, lust…you name it, I felt it all with him! M = mystique, masculinity…mmmm….mmmmm.

“Have you thought about me?”

Jodi Ellen Malpas fans prepare to have your minds blown by this story and these characters! For readers who didn’t find This Man was their cup of tea, you really need pick this one up and give it a go! The build up to, and the way the revelations were uncovered were delivered with mouth watering perfection! This book was certainly amazing, addictive and everything else you mentioned Gitte! I Absolutely loved it! Roll on November, because we NEED MORE!
