Standalone : Emotional love story

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up. She graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.

Ryle is assertive, stubborn, and maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant and has a total soft spot for Lily; and the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head, but Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his no dating rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.

As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan, her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.

With this bold and deeply personal novel Colleen Hoover delivers a heart-wrenching story that breaks exciting new ground for her as a writer. Combining a captivating romance with a cast of all too human characters, “It Ends with Us” is an unforgettable tale of love that comes at the ultimate price.

It ends with us

Reviewed by Jenny & Gitte

“You are my world, Lily. My world.”

Nothing…and we mean, nothing…could have prepared us for how this story unfolded. You know a book has affected you when you finish it and sit there numb, unable to even contemplate moving until you’ve processed all the intricacies of the emotional, unforgettable and extraordinary story you’ve been privy to. When, a day later, you catch yourself staring into space thinking about the characters you’ve loved, their situation and their outcome as though you’ve experienced every aspect of the story on some personal level. And then…. struggling to find the words to adequately convey your feelings when all you really want to do is grab every reader and yell, READ this book! When, no matter how emotionally battered you feel, you want readers to experience the pain and courage it took this author to put down her words for us to share.

That’s exactly how we feel after reading It Ends With Us. The naked truth? This story wasn’t anything we expected but so much more than we could have asked for. We were left overloaded with emotion at the intensity and direction Colleen Hoover took us in with Lily’s story. This is the Colleen Hoover we love, the lady whose words are like a warm, comforting hug one minute, a kick to the heart the next.

“I love you, Lily. Everything you are. I love you.”

It took guts to write this story because as heartbreaking as it was for us to read it, we can only guess what it took for Colleen Hoover to reach into her heart and bring this book to life. This is an author with the incredible talent to weave a story that left us questioning ourselves, our thoughts and our feelings and with It Ends With Us, Colleen Hoover deserves all the accolades this story will bring.

We (fairly or unfairly) placed Colleen Hoover on a pedestal years ago. She’s way up there as far as authors go and we have come to expect the unique and the phenomenal from her. It’s hard not to when she is responsible for books such as: Slammed, Point of Retreat, Hopeless and Maybe Someday. These are the sort of books we treasure and don’t get to experience as often as we’d like.

We liked, but didn’t love the last two books we read by Collen. They felt a little ‘safe’ for want of a better word. We know this author, we know what she’s capable of and those two books fell a little short of our expectations, but that’s our opinion and we know others loved them. We were worried our love affair with Colleen’s writing was over and that, readers, would have been a travesty. It Ends With Us has broken that voodoo and we couldn’t be happier…despite having tears streaming down our faces.

“How far would you go, Lily?”
“I don’t know.”

Some have told us this is a huge departure for Colleen Hoover but we disagree. This, this is the sort of story we always knew Colleen Hoover would one day deliver. Now we understand the posts we’ve seen from her stating how difficult this book was to write and how much it took out of her because reading it tore us to pieces. We loved these characters with every beat of our hearts so when they hurt, you can bet we hurt too. This one hit us hard. Personally it resonated with us in ways we’d rather it didn’t and would love to forget.

Colleen Hoover dug deep for this book and It Ends With Us is testament to how Colleen has grown as an author in the last four years because this story is remarkable, different, honest, heartbreaking and at times agonizing reading. This is not an easy book to get through but by God, it’s rewarding.

“Someone once told me that there is no such thing as bad people. We’re all just people who sometimes do bad things.”

There is so much we’d love to tell you about this book. We’d love to sift through the layers, the complexities, the sheer emotion of the story, but we won’t because the surprise element is what makes this story so palpable and only an author can tell their story. What we will say is that Colleen Hoover sideswiped us big time, many times and that synopsis doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of what you’ll find between the pages of this book. The significance of the title had us in tears.

Reliving Lily’s youth was particularly difficult for us both. It was a personal journey we understood implicitly and it hurt to read. We were Lily and that was punishing for us both. In true Colleen fashion, though, she delivers this part of Lily’s story in an imaginatively warm way that had us both tearing up and giggling, our hearts overflowing with warmth as much as dread. Oh how we loved the courageous Lily Bloom. We championed her, we understood her and we felt for her every step of the way from her younger years to present as we lived Lily’s journey.

‘Imagine all the people you meet in your life. There are so many. They come in like waves, trickling in and out with the tide. Some waves are much bigger and make more of an impact than others. Sometimes the waves bring with them things from deep in the bottom of the sea and they leave those things tossed onto the shore. Imprints against the grains of sand that prove the waves had once been there, long after the tide recedes.’

If you’re a person who shies away from heartbreaking stories or who shuns anything resembling a love triangle (this is not a love triangle) and you allow those feelings prevent you from picking up this book, you’ll be kicking yourselves because this is one of the best reads of this year. We can’t urge you enough to take a step outside of your reading bubble and trust this author to guide you with her beautiful, honest, heartbreaking and raw words. This story demanded to be told, we feel it demands to be read and as we sit here with tears streaming down our faces, we know we won’t be forgetting this experience any time soon.

I have been excitedly anticipating the release of It Ends With Us. I know Colleen Hoover’s newest gem is going to leave me with a major book hangover. I will not be able to pick up another book for days and her characters are going to stick with me for a long time. Try as I might, I know my biggest issue will be pacing myself and not reading the entire book in one sitting.

I have been in contact with my local library and have been advocating for them to put all of Colleen’s books into their circulation. I know I will not be able to wait until they finally get It Ends With Us into circulation. Hurry up, August, I want to get my hands on that book!

You’ll be able to comfort one another and like us, you’ll be discussing it days after finishing it. Enjoy <3 xo

  36. Abril

Hi! I loved your review. I was already frigging excited for the book. I love Colleen since the first book I’ve read of hers and, as you said in the review, I placed Colleen on a pedestal ever since and she never disappointed me! I want her books so bad, I’ve read each of them on my tablet, in e-book formal. But it’s not the same :/ you know that feeling of holding it in your hands and putting a bookmark when you leave it (if you’re able to) but the sad thing is I never saw none of Colleen’s books in Argentina and I can’t afford online shopping because the shipping cost is almost the same price of the book and that’s insane! I don’t know why I’m writing this, I just wanted to unburned myself I guess. Anyways, I loved the review seriously, it’s the first one I’ve read of this book because I was really scared because of any possible spoiler and luckily I chose the perfect review to increase my excitement levels haha goodbye and thank you!!

  37. kgauthier88

Such an amazing review! I seriously can not wait to read this book!

  38. lvbergman

I can’t wait for this book!!!

  39. shawi

Excellent review! Got me even more pumped to read it! It scares me a little to find out the significance of the tittle but I’m all for it! From the first word that I read of my first Colleen Hoover book I was sold. Colleen has a way to captivate readers to the point I would read in “cow shit”(I believe she mentions some cow shit in the book lol) Everything that she writes. Can’t wait for August!

  40. KristyP

This was a great review, and I love the honesty you shared about Colleen’s last two books and how this one knocked your socks off! I also appreciate the non-spoiler review (I already got spoiled a bit with a two-word hashtag, but I’m still so excited for it). I feel like this may be the (next) pivotal book in her career, the one that puts her on yet a higher pedestal. Look out Nicholas Sparks lol. Thanks for the review.

    • admin

Oh no! Damn those spoiler grrrr Thank you so much! Yes, we’re always honest in our reviewing and HONESTLY this book was nothing short of AMAZING! You’re going to love it <3

  41. kinz24

I’ve been patiently waiting (or not so patiently waiting) for this book to release. I’m dying to read it! Thanks for the non spoiler review. I’m so ready to read this life changing book!

  42. lea

So awesome! thanks for the chance <3

  43. kiesha

Great review! I don’t think I can wait until August to get my hands on it ( though I have no other choice)! I love Colleen’s books and I am super excited!

  44. trudy29

This is the first review of It Ends With Us that gave anything away but at the same time it gives nothing away! I loved it! It also made me so excited about this book! I pre-ordered as soon as it was up but I too was left disappointed by the last two books. I cannot wait to get my hands on this one because it sounds like she reached so far in to herself to create it and that is one of the things I love so much about Colleen’s work! Maybe Someday, Hopeless, Ugly Love they have all had these amazing, broken characters that are so alive, and real and they tug at your heart and make you feel. After reading this review I know that the new book will tear me apart, break me and somehow in the end put me back together again and that is what I love so much about her books!

    • Mezaal63

What a great review. I knew this book was gonna hurt based on Colleens comments and from what I’ve heard from a few people who also read this book. I’m trying to clear out as much as my tbr because I know I won’t be able to read for a few days after I read this book but I won’t hesitate to start it. I am excited for many reasons but one of the main ones is that it means so much to the author, thats a huge plus in my book.

    • admin

It’s worth EVERY emotion this book will elicit from you. It’s a truly unforgettable read and THANK YOU for your kind words. We believe any spoiler for this book would be a travesty. <3

    • admin

Thank you! Not long until you get to experience it too! ❤️

  45. lenanoble

I have never been so excited about a book coming out as I have this one, I can’t wait!!

Great review! Cannot wait for this book!

  54. sydneynridge4ever

Love this review! I can’t wait to read this book! I’ll actually get it right before I go to New York where Colleen’s book tour will be and where I won’t be able to see her while I’m there b/c my train leaves 15 mins before she starts. So sad and disappointed that I’m going to o miss her! I love all of Colleen’s books and usually read them and in one day. I’d read her grocery list if I could! Lol! I’m so excited for this book. All of her characters stay with me and from the sounds of it….this one won’t disappoint!
