sole sister cover

The second book in The Boots My Mother Gave Me series, Sole Sister picks up several years later, continuing the story of Harley LeBeau and her rebellious sister Katrina ‘Kat’ LeBeau.

Relocating to Nashville to be closer to Harley and Miah, Kat aspires to launch her Sole Sister fashion line. A gutsy and impromptu plan suddenly lands her on the cover of The Ville Spill—the local celebrity gossip rag—alongside country music’s latest heartthrob, giving Sole Sister the push it needs. But Kat quickly learns that not all press is good press.

Years removed from an abusive childhood and teenage pregnancy, the past that Kat never talks about continues to seep into her life and relationships. Still struggling with the images of finding her father after his suicide, Kat forges ahead, vowing to avoid past mistakes. To focus on her career and responsibilities as a single mother, she swears off the disappointments of love. The first man she ever loved, her father, broke her heart. The first boy she ever fell in love with, her daughter’s father, broke her heart.

What Kat didn’t plan on was Nashville SWAT Officer Connor Reese. She and Connor have more pulling them together than keeping them apart. Kat finds herself in familiar territory when her plan to steer clear of heartache is derailed after spending a night in his arms. Will facing her past help to secure her future? Will Connor offer her a second chance at life and love? Or will her heart break yet again?

Staying true to its predecessor, Sole Sister explores the dynamics of strength in sisterhood, the ongoing conflict and unconditional love between mother and daughter, and the courage to become more than one’s past.

“I think the things we desire the most in life are the things that were withheld from us. The things we never got from the one person we wanted them from the most.”

Sole Sisters is the sequel to The Boots My Mother Gave Me which was an absolute five star read for me. I fell in love with all the characters, the sentiments and the beauty and was so excited to read the sequel. I’d highly recommend reading this series in order to get the full enjoyment as well as meet all the characters from their beginnings. Brooklyn James is a brilliant Author and her characters are so incredibly real and their story so emotional. You will LOVE The Boots My Mother Gave Me and you will revel in Sole Sisters!

“The demons don’t care if it’s light or dark, do they?”

“You have them too?”

In Sole Sister we catch up with everyone years down the line and much has changed for our Kit-Kat as well as Harley and Miah. Harley is now a sought after song writer, Miah a SWAT officer and Kat is an up and coming designer. Their bond is incredibly strong and both are still trying to be at peace with their abusive childhood and old insecurities; Kat in particular is still having recurring nightmares about her Father.

“You ever wish you had it to do all over again? With someone you could count on?”

“As sure as I breathe.”

Kat’s kismet makes a surprising and much deserved entrance when the gorgeous SWAT Officer Connor Reese enters her life. A man who truly sees Kat and whose life mirrors hers in some respects. Kat’s scared, in fact she’s petrified as her track record hasn’t been great, heart-break is a devastating feeling. Her priority is her teenage daughter as well as her own fragile heart. This makes her reluctant to try her hand at a second chance at love. Connor’s not having any of that though and their relationship was really quite beautiful, mature and inspirational. Whilst I did struggle at times as I found that we didn’t get enough detail – instead there seemed to be an over emphasis on Kat’s inner musing and theorising – it did feel real and believable.

“You want to be fearless?”

“I do. I really do.”

“Let’s be fearless, Kit-Kat.”

Sole Sister is a beautiful, sweet, emotional, heart-warming and hopeful story. There’s so many real to life messages in there, albeit fiction. It shows strength, unconditional love and that trusting your heart and letting people in despite fears of being hurt can be truly beautiful. A really enjoyable read and a series I highly recommend.

‘You’re everything I’ve ever dreamed of.’

Gitte:  5 STARS

I absolutely loved this book! I couldn’t and didn’t want to put it down. It is so well written and the characters make such an impression on you that you need to know how their journey ends.

It was an emotional and beautiful ride that packed “a punch” with its message through a heart-breaking and poignant story of domestic abuse, alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, suicide and how to accept the love that is meant for you. So to say this story is emotional, well that may be an underestimation.  The dialogue was honest, real, fast paced and at times very funny.  There are complex characters in abundance, a scrumptious and frankly amazing hero; Jeremiah and of course our Harley a sweet yet tough and determined heroine.

I have to say the romance between Harley and Jeremiah (Miah) melted my heart. They started off as childhood friends and Miah would do anything for his Harley girl, he was her everything; he was her soul mate. Their journey was so intense, real and emotional and I fell in complete love with Miah. The man had the patience of a saint!

This story sees Harley, who has lived through a frightening and unsettled childhood; struggle to find that all important meaning of what her place is in the world; the thing she was meant to do with her life. This constant struggle of searching for what she was born to be is really quite heart breaking, I wanted to shake her and make her open her eyes and not miss what she had right in front of her. However, she needed to knock through the wall she had built around herself, all in her own good time. Harley’s journey is not pretty and dressed up; it is raw, gritty and at times downright frustrating. Yet it came across as real and believable. Harley showed strength and determination in her conviction albeit it misguided at times.

She got there, whilst wearing the boots her Mother gave her.
