In Victorian England, vice of every kind can be purchased, and Matthew, the Earl of Wallingford, makes certain he avails himself of every possible pleasure. Bored and jaded, he is as well-known for his coldness as for his licentious affairs with beautiful women.
We meet Matthew, the handsome, notorious aristocratic playboy with the closed heart. His past haunts him and for him, sex with a woman is just that. Sex. No emotion, no feeling. Sex fills his physical needs but he is shut off emotionally.
Jane is a lowly nurse. She works as a lady’s companion during the day and a nurse at night. This is where she meets Matthew who has been beaten up. Matthews eyes are bandaged as a result of the attack and he cannot see Jane but is drawn to her through her angelic voice and caring touch. These two have a connection, a bond which transcends sight and Matthew and Jane cannot deny the strong feelings they have for one another. Being with Jane makes Matthew yearn for more.
Jane was such a beautiful and sweet character. She wasn’t your classic stunning beauty, her beauty was on the inside and I loved her from the minute we met her. Matthew needed a strong woman to free him from his past and Jane could be that woman.
Although being a bit of a novice on Historical Romances I have to say I have become a huge fan of this genre, and this book was one I devoured immediately. I was swept away by its beauty, it’s characters, it’s drama and the way in which the author had me experiencing life in this era.
To say this was an emotional read would be an understatement. The character of Matthew with all his flaws and demons had me riveted. The relationship between Matthew and Jane was beautiful, painful, erotic, sensual, heartbreaking and even cruel at times and I breathed every minute of it.
There were times I actually had to put the book down and compose myself such was the profound effect this story was having on me.
There were a few reveals I didn’t see coming and they shocked me. I pretty much worked out Matthews demons early on but this in NO way detracted from my horror when his back story was revealed.
It was moving and I felt every moment.
“I know the man you were,”
“I’ve glimpsed him since. Where is he, Matthew?”
“He’s broken,” he rasped as he ran his lips down her cheek to her jaw. “He’s fucking ruined, Jane, and he’ll destroy you.”
The sex was steamy……the carriage scene **fans self** – well, you definitely felt the chemistry between these two – it leapt off the pages.
This book was such a surprise and turned out quite differently to what I originally expected and it was pure torture at times, but torture in a… “i’ve just read a really great book” kind of way. You know? The sort of book that leaves a mark on your heart.
This book held me from the very first to last page and it never let go.
A truly amazing read that I won’t forget in a hurry. This is a book that will stay with you long after you read “the end”/
NB: I read Sinful without reading Addicted (Book #1) and found I kept pace with the story.
