THICK LOVE (Thin Love #2) by EDEN BUTLER

thick love

SYNOPSIS

He doesn’t ask their names.

He doesn’t deserve to know them.

Ransom Riley Hale’s friends think his life is charmed: first string as a freshman on a championship-winning college football team. A father with two Super Bowl rings. A mother with platinum albums and multiple Grammies under her belt. But that brilliant shine on the surface hides the darkness beneath; it’s all Ransom has ever known.

Despite the shadows he walked in, once there was a blinding light fracturing the darkness. It brought the promise of hope and happiness. He’d been careless, filled with pride and stupidity and lost that light. Ripped it from the world.

Now, the shadows are dimming again. Aly King surges into his life threatening to pull him from the darkness. She is everything Ransom can never be again. Her light feels too warm, promises him that there is more waiting for him beyond the shadows.

But the shadows are relentless, resurfacing when he thinks he is safe, and Ransom knows he must keep Aly from them too before he pulls her down into the darkness with him.

“Thick love is best. Thick love is…it’s when you know.”
“It’s when you know what?”
“It’s when you know you’ve found the one that can pick up the pieces when you let your heart get broken.”

If a love story full of angst is something that gets your book heart racing, if you revel in watching two people work at their love and relish  having your heart tested to the limit then Thick Love is the book for you and boy did we LOVE it! We want to applaud Eden Butler for staying true to her characters and admire her for telling their story their way. It was imperative for Ransom’s story be told his way, after all this was his journey, not a rehashing of his parents love story, and so we were pleased with the direction Eden Butler took with regards to the story and the characters.

“I wanted to help you.”
“I don’t need your help.”
“Bullshit, Ransom. You’re lost. You’ve been lost a long time.”

From the moment we met Ransom in Thin Love, we were immediately drawn him, his flaws, his anger and the obstacles he had to overcome. After all, Ransom did have big shoes to follow with his high profile parents yet nothing could have prepared us for how his story would unfold.

“Ransom, you can’t live like this.”
“Who the hell said I’m living?”

Our hearts immediately went out to Ransom. Here was a young man in his prime, the world at his feet, looks, charm, money and talent, yet he was world weary, haunted by his past, burdened and beaten down. Life outside of his family and football had become such a struggle which had manifested itself in a physical sense which we found heartbreaking.

Ransom’s voice was gut wrenching, frustrating and exasperating but it was also incredibly sad as we observed this sensitive soul so riddled with guilt, wallowing in self-condemnation and self-loathing as he blamed himself for a tragedy that would consume him. We alternated between wanting to hug him and hit him. Ransom was young man so completely lost in grief we wondered if he would ever drag himself out of his despair and possess the ability and the desire to set himself free.

“Aly, I have to be so careful with you.”
“I’m not going to break.”
“I might.”

Aly was such a plucky heroine. Aly’s love for Ransom was without question. Aly understood the difficulty Ransom faced in opening up his heart and although she repeatedly forgave him Aly was by no means a pushover as never feared speaking her mind to put Ransom in his place and in return Aly made Ransom feel alive for the first time in a long time but did he deserve her love?

‘I had seen many, many brilliant things in my life, in my travels, things that would take away your breath, things that would make you never question if God existed. But none of them could match the magic of Aly when she danced.’

Ransom and Aly’s love was one born from grief and sadness and so they had to fight for their love and in doing so Eden Butler showed us that they weren’t defined as a couple and that Ransom and Aly needed to find themselves independently and deal with their issues before they could commit their love and feelings to someone else.  After all, as we said, this was Ransom’s unique journey and he could never truly be at peace and give himself until he had dealt with his issues.

“I’m not the bad boy who needs saving, Aly.”
“Non, cheri, you’re a good man who needs to forgive himself.”

Whilst you could read Thick Love on its own we really do encourage you to read Thin Love first as you will garner a much better understanding of Ransom, his past, his family and his persona which is an integral part of Thick Love. We couldn’t have read one without the other.

We LOVED this book and would recommend it in a heartbeat! And so Ransom and Aly’s story continues…………..

SYNOPSIS

Keira Riley was the girl Kona Hale loved first, the woman he wants to love last. They’ve battled addiction, forgiven betrayal and healed from heartache, coming through it all bruised but hopeful that their future will be limitless.

Kona Hale was a blinding flame that Keira Riley gladly burned inside—his touch, his kiss, his overwhelming love, all made her dizzy, desperate and desired, made her believe in a love worth bleeding for, a love that ignites the heart with an unquenchable flame. But when you fall in love with an NFL darling who can’t seem to let go of the spotlight, sometimes even that flame can be gutted by the buffeting winds of opportunity, can be lost behind the brilliant flash of fame.

As Keira and Kona get caught up in plans for an extravagant march down the aisle, the hard won sanctuary they’ve found in each other’s arms begins to erode. Will they be able to see through all the beckoning glitz and glamour to what they have worked so hard to build together, or will their love be lost in the spotlight?

MY BELOVED is a novella set prior to the THIN LOVE epilogue.

“Kiss me, baby. Kiss me like you mean it.”

When we saw My Beloved was going to cover the events leading up to the epilogue in Thin Love we HAD to read it! Whilst we were satisfied with how we left this couple, we wouldn’t pass up any opportunity to spend more time with them and gain a little more insight into the raw, intensely passionate love they share.

“I told you, baby, I’ll never stop following after you. It’s pointless to keep running. I’ll find you. I’ll always find you.”

With all good intentions, Kona wants to lavish Keira with everything he couldn’t when they were apart. His heart is definitely in the right place, it’s just that the execution of his plans isn’t always the best.  After all, where Keira is concerned Kona is a man who thinks with his heart, and it’s one of the things that endears him to us.

‘Kona was not perfect, but he was her perfect.’

Keira goes along with his desires, all the while knowing all she wants is Kona, plain and simple, no fanfare, just the man she’s waited more than 16 years to be a part of her life again.

“All yours baby. I’ve always been yours.”

There are obstacles to overcome, lives to sort out and being thrust into the spotlight at a time when Keira craves privacy isn’t something she relishes at all. You know they’ll mess up, this couple will never do things the easy way and their love is one fraught with obstacles that they have to learn to overcome and in this book we see this couple really dig deep in that regard.

”Don’t lose me, Kona. Don’t let me fall into the background. That’s not where I want to be.”
“Baby, never…not ever.”

We adored the setting of this book. Eden Butler took us on a trip to Hawaii for a time and we became immersed in the sight, sounds and culture of this beautiful paradise. She really did transport us to this magical place with her words and descriptive prose and Kona’s large family were a delight. There’s lots of emotion, tears, laughter and of course the passion between this couple is off the charts.

We enjoyed checking in with this Keira and Kona who’ve had more than their fair share of heartbreak and pain, to see them make up for their heartbreaking time apart was enthralling.

“…she is my breath. My life. She has been since I was a kid. She always will be.”

There were some truly beautiful moments in this story that went straight to our hearts. Ransom especially was a revelation and his joy at being a family was wonderful.  He stole our hearts completely and to see he will get his own book next year….well, we were giddy with excitement!

These two are soul mates. No doubt about it. They’ve had their ups and downs, their highs and lows but their love has always brought them through. My Beloved explores their bonds even further and fans of this passionate and intense couple will devour this one! Bring on Thick Love next year! We will be hovering over that 1click button that’s for sure!

THIN LOVE – Thin Love #1 by EDEN BUTLER

thin love

SYNOPSIS

Love isn’t supposed to be an addiction. It isn’t supposed to leave you bleeding.

Kona pushed, Keira pulled, and in their wake, they left behind destruction.

She sacrificed everything for him.

It wasn’t enough.

But the wounds of the past can never be completely forgotten and still the flame remains, slumbers between the pleasure of yesterday and the thought of what might have been.

Now, sixteen years later, Keira returns home to bury the mother who betrayed her, just as Kona tries to hold onto what remains of his NFL career with the New Orleans Steamers. Across the crowded bustle of a busy French Market, their paths collide, conjuring forgotten memories of a consuming touch, skin on skin, and the still smoldering fire that begs to be rekindled.

When Kona realizes the trifecta of betrayal—his, Keira’s and those lies told to keep them apart—his life is irrevocably changed and he once again takes Keira down with him into the fire that threatens to ignite them both.

J&G✯✯✯✯

“And thin love is bad?”
“Thin love ain’t love at all.”

Jenny:  Once I started Thin Love, I couldn’t put it down. I was immediately drawn in and emotionally invested in Keira and Kona’s story of fierce love, passion, betrayal, deceit, secrets and second chances.

The raw passion between this couple was positively palpable. The author did a stellar job of making me feel and experience the explosive and soul deep connection between Keira and Kona as I followed them through their highs and lows. Theirs was a chaotic, somewhat toxic yet all-consuming and searing love that had me, for the most part completely and utterly engrossed.

“Who the hell wants to be normal? Normal is boring. Everyone else is normal, but baby, that’s not us.”

Keira and Kona’s love could be as volatile as it could be gentle, yet was a love so fierce, obsessive and addictive, a love that was grown from a young age, I wondered if a love such as theirs could prosper and endure.  They certainly had a battle on their hands. Not only with themselves but also from negative outside interferences and my heart went out to them.

“I don’t want easy. I want the impossible.  I want love so thick, I drown in it; it’s the only thing worth having and, I’m sorry Kona but I really don’t think you’re capable…”
“You don’t know me, Keira, and you don’t have a fucking clue what I’m capable of.”

Keira and Kona certainly held me in their grasp and I was chomping at the bit to see what had transpired during the years apart and how they had coped, what their lives had been like during those missing years and if their frantic, consuming love had survived and could possibly be rekindled.

“I deserved to be loved. I deserved for you to never stop loving me because I gave my heart to you. I put it in your hands. I trusted you with it.”

It was one crazy ride wasn’t it G?

Gitte: Wow, yes crazy ride indeed I couldn’t put this story down. What a fantastic job this Author did in drawing the reader in and immediately falling hook line and sinker for the characters and their journey.

‘To her, then, he was life. He was breath. He was the searing part of her soul that burned her from the inside.’

I wouldn’t necessarily call this a healthy and beautiful love story but it felt true, intense and powerful. It was extremely addictive and passionate. No question; a story of forever soul-mates but not in the butterfly and flowers respect.

‘That face, that name, is something unreal to her and not the boy who shredded her heart.’

I wouldn’t wish to give anything away so I’ll just say that my heart and curiosity had me cursing real life for having to put my kindle down as I was reading. The way it started was brilliant; I needed to know how Keira ended up where she did and as we learnt of her past and became embroiled in her and Kona’s relationship…wow!

“Whatever I am, it’s yours.”

I was torn on my emotions. Love/hate….it truly is a fine line! I have to say I was swept up and became completely engrossed in the ugly-beautiful love story of Keira and Kona!

“Kona, I get the feeling you might end up being my favourite mistake.”

J&G:  So, why not a 5 star?  If you’d asked us at around 70% we would have told you Thin Love was going to be just that. We were completely swept away with the angst, the love and the way the story and the characters developed and hated having to put it aside when real life interrupted our reading.

There were plotlines in the last 30% that felt unnecessary and merely served to drag out the story. Thin Love contained a lot of angst and drama and we were revelling in it up to a point and then it became a little repetitive, and there were times we felt as though we just wanted it to end. The epilogue was amazing and went a long way in making us forget the unnecessary angst and other issues at the back end of the story.

Our other issue with Thin Love was the amount of errors. We must stress that we’ve read off unedited ARC’s and if need be, we can see past errors. However, this was a purchased copy which was peppered with errors throughout which became increasingly prevalent from about the 70% mark.

It’s a crying shame this story contained so many errors – from misplaced, misspelled words, to switching past/present tense in the one paragraph, even to the point where a character name was spelt incorrectly because sadly, all this affected our reading pleasure and we were gutted this happened.

As we said, for the most part we loved this story and must stress that without the errors, the repetitiveness and unnecessary drama filling towards the end, this would have been a 5 star read, without a doubt.

“Keira hasn’t had much happy. Try to give her a little bit, okay?”

Would we recommend this book? Absolutely!!! In a heartbeat because despite our issues, this was a brilliant story. We felt the passion in the pit of our stomachs, we were emotionally invested in the characters and their story and our hearts craved their all-consuming love.
