GOOD BOY (WAGs, #1) by SARINA BOWEN & ELLE KENNEDY :: REVIEW

Standalone hockey themed friends to lovers sports romance

31st

SYNOPSIS

Hosting her brother’s wedding for an MVP guest list is the challenge of Jess Canning’s life. Already the family screw-up, she can’t afford to fail. And nobody (nobody!) can learn of the colossal mistake she made with the best man during a weak moment last spring. It was wrong, and there will not be a repeat. Absolutely not. Even if he is the sexiest thing on two legs.

Blake Riley sees the wedding as fate’s gift to him. Jess is the maid of honor and he’s the best man? Let the games begin. So what if he’s facing a little (fine, a lot) of resistance? He just needs to convince the stubborn blonde that he’s really a good boy with a bad rap. Luckily, every professional hockey player knows that you’ve got to make an effort if you want to score.

But Jess has more pressing issues to deal with than sexy-times with a giant man-child. Such as: Will the ceremony start on time, even though someone got grandma drunk? Does glitter ever belong at a wedding? And is it wrong to murder the best man?

Caution: May cause accidental aspiration of tea or coffee. Do not read in a public place where loud laughter is inappropriate. Contains hot but hilarious hockey players, puppy cuddling and a snarky pair of underwear

4.5 Cheezus Stars

‘I want someone to look at me like they just won the lottery. And I want to feel sure that I have to, too- that I can say “forever” and know I’m making the absolute right decision. I’ve been in love before. A little. But never like that.’

CHEEZUS…we loved this book! You know those stories that have you laughing out loud whilst swooning and loving that typical frustration you feel when you want to knock a few heads together. Well, Good Boy is that book. Not only do we get to properly know the loud and brash Blake from Him & Us, we also get a fabulous catch up with the gorgeous Jamie and Wes curtesy of Jessica, Jamie’s sister.

“That’s Blakey’s best trait, you know. His need to protect. To make everyone happy…”

Let’s start with Blake shall we! This guy had us in stitches with laughter, he’s like a bull in a teashop. Huge hockey dude with an endearing immaturity and juvenile humour which came across as loveable and hilarious rather than crude and annoying. We fell in utter love with this guy, and we have to admit our soft spot for him has gained him entry to an all-time favourite book boyfriend list. Why? Because this man has a heart so big and soft under all that hard and imposing exterior.  He’s so bloody tenacious and a cheeky bugger who just stole our hearts.

‘Blake was onto me, though. And that dude is like a big, drooly dog. Doesn’t matter if he just met you, he wants to lick your face and hump your leg.’

Blake is a blunt flirt who’s set his sights on Jess. It all began with a massage chair one night, a night neither he nor Jess can forget. Frenemies to lovers is a theme we love and it was so well written by these Authors ensuring we inhaled every word watching this push pull romance blossom. It was such a brilliantly funny ride and we loved every minute of it.

“Never meant to do this tonight.” – Jess
“Don’t overthink it.” I tear the packet and roll the rubber onto my aching dick. “You just need a little recharge on my docking station.” – Blake

Where Blake is confident and comfortable in life Jess is the exact opposite. She’s got this heavy weight on her shoulders of not having found her place and trying to live up to this misplaced insecurity that she’s the black sheep in a rather large family of siblings. She feels like a user rather than a contributor. But when she shines, she lights up the world when a nudge in the right direction bolsters a natural ability, showing her understanding and compassion. If only things with a certain hockey rascal was as easy to see as the wood for the trees.

‘I miss you, he writes.’

‘I miss you, too, I admit. But that doesn’t mean we’re dating.’

‘We are though.’

‘Goodnight, Blake.’

‘Good night, girlfriend.’

We loved these characters; their real life struggles and perceived inferiorities. Their story was warm and fuzzy; sweet and sexy; funny and emotional. It was a fabulous romantic comedy that gave us such enjoyment as we read and fell in love.

“You know,” he continues, “when all the babes would throw themselves at me nilly-willy.”
“Willy-nilly,” I correct.
“Huh?”
“It’s willy-nilly. The willy comes first.”
He winks at me. “I’ll let you have this one, but only because you’re right – the willy always does come first.”

THE GOAL (Off Campus Book #4) by ELLE KENNEDY

“The game  just got a whole lot more interesting.”

26th

SYNOPSIS

She’s good at achieving her goals…

College senior Sabrina James has her whole future planned out: graduate from college, kick butt in law school, and land a high-paying job at a cutthroat firm. Her path to escaping her shameful past certainly doesn’t include a gorgeous hockey player who believes in love at first sight. One night of sizzling heat and surprising tenderness is all she’s willing to give John Tucker, but sometimes, one night is all it takes for your entire life to change.

But the game just got a whole lot more complicated

Tucker believes being a team player is as important as being the star. On the ice, he’s fine staying out of the spotlight, but when it comes to becoming a daddy at the age of twenty-two, he refuses to be a bench warmer. It doesn’t hurt that the soon-to-be mother of his child is beautiful, whip-smart, and keeps him on his toes. The problem is, Sabrina’s heart is locked up tight, and the fiery brunette is too stubborn to accept his help. If he wants a life with the woman of his dreams, he’ll have to convince her that some goals can only be made with an assist.

”You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, Sabrina James.”
“No.” She smiles. “You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

Yet another winner in what has become one of our favourite sports romance series. Once again, everything we love about these books was there: the friendships, the love, the witty banter, hot hockey players and a hero to completely lose our hearts to, plus some very, very sexy times.

Sabrina James has always been a bit of enigma throughout the books. She’s been mentioned in previous books and through glimpses, we know she’s been the nemesis of Dean who seems to dislike her immensely. She was painted as an entitled cold hearted bitch, so when THAT bombshell was dropped at the end of The Score…you bet we were desperate for Tucker and Sabrina’s story and how THAT bombshell came to fruition.

Now, we were all set to dislike Sabrina and it would’ve been so easy to do so because in John Tucker, Elle Kennedy created such a beautifully sweet, extremely sexy and all round nice guy. He was luscious to say the least so Sabrina had a LOT of work to do to become worthy of his affections. So did our preconceived opinions of Sabrina change in The Goal?

Everything we presumed to know about Sabrina was flipped on its head. We really understood this girl. Sure, she was driven and closed off, but her drive was born out of a desire to better her life and to escape her dire home surroundings. Sabrina was prepared to work bloody hard to get there and she didn’t want any distractions. Sex is fine, just no attachments or anything that might derail her dream of being accepted into Harvard Law. Working two jobs and studying like crazy, she barely has time for sleeping, let alone time for matters of the heart. So yeah, she could be construed as closed off and cold, but we did warm to her and admired her commitment, though she was bloody lucky John Tucker had the patience of a saint because she did test our patience towards the end. We wanted to shake her and show her what she had in a man like Tucker and felt she robbed Tucker of a ‘special‘ moment due to her stubbornness.

‘Sabrina James isn’t used to people loving her. Sometimes I wonder if she even knows how to love someone back.’

John Tucker…where do we start with this guy? Once again Elle Kennedy gave us a hero to die for! Seriously…this guy is kind, charming, swoon worthy, sweet, and hot and a bit of a dirty talker with a heart the size of Texas and a sexy Southern drawl to match. When he drawled…darlin’…. our hearts melted!!!

‘She’s got this hard exterior, but inside she’s as soft as butter. I see flashes of vulnerability in her bottomless brown eyes and I just want to…take care of her.’

We don’t want to expand on anything in the story outside of the synopsis because the beauty of Tucker and Sabrina’s love story lies in experiencing the unfolding events for yourselves and we would hate to ruin that experience for other readers. We’ll just say- to see Tucker in this light….OMG! Swoon on steroids!

Picking up each book in this series really is like coming home and catching up with old friends. We feel so invested in their lives, their loves, their futures and each book giving us a further perspective on previous events. Again we welled up over events that occurred in The Score.

“You’re the only one for me. My sun rises and sets on your smile. My heart beats because yours does.”

The Goal had a different ‘feel’ to the other instalments and whilst it wasn’t our favourite, we really did enjoy it and wouldn’t have missed it for the world. We’re not ready to say goodbye to these guys yet, and on that note….can we have Fitzy’s book next…pretty pweease!

Can your favorite hockey players finish their first season together undefeated?

Five months in, NHL forward Ryan Wesley is having a record-breaking rookie season. He’s living his dream of playing pro hockey and coming home every night to the man he loves–Jamie Canning, his longtime best friend turned boyfriend. There’s just one problem: the most important relationship of his life is one he needs to keep hidden, or else face a media storm that will eclipse his success on the ice.

Jamie loves Wes. He really, truly does. But hiding sucks. It’s not the life Jamie envisioned for himself, and the strain of keeping their secret is taking its toll. It doesn’t help that his new job isn’t going as smoothly as he’d hoped, but he knows he can power through it as long as he has Wes. At least apartment 10B is their retreat, where they can always be themselves.

Or can they? When Wes’s nosiest teammate moves in upstairs, the threads of their carefully woven lie begin to unravel. With the outside world determined to take its best shot at them, can Wes and Jamie develop major-league relationship skills on the fly?

4.5 fabulous stars!

‘Love is friendship set on fire. I get it now.’

Well didn’t it feel absolutely brilliant to be back with Jamie and Ryan!!! We loved every single minute of this follow up story to a couple who stole our hearts in Him. Reading it in one sitting we revelled in their relationship struggle, their friendships, their love and of course their passion. Both traveling a road of self-realisation as they adjusted to a life together fraught with obstacles.

‘I’m not usually one to wallow in the injustice of it all. I understand the world I live in.’

The gorgeous and powerful Ryan shows a side of himself that broke our hearts in this book. We actually cried through certain scenes from his past as well as through one poignant moment where he bares all. On paper he may seem like the strong one in the relationship with Jamie but we beg to differ. This man’s heart aches to love and find a family where he belongs. Where he’s needed and wanted – loved in return. Whilst having a record-breaking rookie season and living his dream of playing pro hockey, what ultimately comes first to Ryan is, Jamie.

‘Hell, I think disappointment isn’t something he fears, but expects – like he’s forever living in a state of when-will-the-other-shoe-drop.’

Jamie is yet to fully adapt to this new life of his. He knows he loves Ryan and his job as a hockey coach yet the strain of hiding the truth of their relationship plays heavily on not only Ryan but Jamie, too.  Jamie has to face many demons as well as a huge setback which puts an increasing weight on a relationship destined to be threatened by the media as well as those surrounding them.

‘He wears the same cocky smile I’ve always seen on his face. But now I know how much pain it hides. It was right there the whole time, too. But I didn’t understand.’

Us has so many facets to it. It’s incredibly real and moving. Honest and beautiful. Funny and gorgeously sweet. It brings the added passionate spice, wrapping these boys up in a deliciously funny and sexy man-blanket. We enjoyed every single minute reading this book and the added bonus of the hilariously loud and brash but incredibly sweet Blake, Ryan’s team-mate. He just completed a fabulous Sunday afternoon read on the couch with our boys Ryan & Jamie….sigh!

 ✯✯✯✯✯ ‘little Dean’ Stars

“Stick with me, kid, and your entire life will change for the better. That’s the Di Laurentis guarantee.”

Oh wow how we love this series, Elle Kennedy just never fails to make us smile, laugh and swoon. The Score is just what we needed and we can’t even count how many times we laughed out loud scaring everyone in our vicinity.

Dean…….Dean……DEAN!!!!! You cocky male slapper you, oh how we fell in love with you. Whilst hugely sexy and passionate, this guy had us crying with laughter continuously. Twilight imprinting, hot baths and the romping pink…errrrr….’Winston’. We bloody LOVE you, Dean!!! We defy anyone not to fall in complete love with everything Dean! He really did show how big and loving his heart is too, as well as a loyal, kind and caring friend.

‘But goddamn it, Logan is never going to let me live this down. Taking a bubble bath with a pink dildo? Allie has doomed me to a fate as the punchline of a never-ending joke.’

The Score for us felt like a breath of fresh air insofar as; sure we’ve read similar stories before but it felt so different and we just didn’t want it to end. Elle Kennedy is a fabulous writer who had us grumbling whenever we had to put our kindles down for real life’s interruptions. And kudos for knocking this incessant need on the head for Authors to slut-shame in their books! Lady, we applaud you for making it okay to enjoy a bit of slap and tickle as and when we want to and whoever the fuck with!

“The life of Dean sure has a lot of rules.”

“Without those rules, there is no life of Dean.”

We have to say as far as heroines go, Allie kicked arse. She was funny, sweet, level headed and loved with all her heart. The dynamics between her and Dean were spot on and we rooted for this couple all the way through.

“Allie.” I draw a steady breath. “We need to stop now. Before my balls disappear altogether and my man-card is revoked.” One blond eyebrow flicks up. “Who has the power to revoke it?” “I don’t know. The man council. The Stonemasons. Jason Statham. Take your pick.”

“Ha. I’m going to post it all over the internet. Guess what, folks – Dean Sebastian Kendrick Heyward- Di Laurentis is over at my place right now watching soaps and drinking girly drinks.” She sticks out her tongue at me. “You’ll never get laid again.”

As we all know – as readers – wherever happiness goes so does trouble and sadness. Whilst we won’t go into details, we will say that our hearts hurt in parts and a realness seeped in – in order to show growth and strength. So whilst we laughed and swooned, we sure did feel incredibly sad too.

“I’m not going to stand by and watch you stick your head in a bottle because you’re too afraid to face the pain.”

Allie and Dean are very much opposites yet their ‘spark’ and banter felt completely convincing and they just fit in every way that counts. We loved them individually and as a couple. Catching up with the gang was fabulous and we are now eagerly awaiting Tucker’s book. Bring it on! We HIGHLY recommend this series to all lovers of romance and laughter.

“Then move the fuck on, babe.”
