SYNOPSIS

Darlene Montgomery has been to hell and back…more than once. After a stint in jail for drug possession, she is finally clean and ready to start over. Yet another failed relationship is just the motivation she needs to move from New York to San Francisco with the hopes of resurrecting her dance career and discovering that she is more than the sum of her rap sheet. As Darlene struggles in her new city, the last thing she wants is to become entangled with her handsome—but cranky—neighbor and his adorable little girl…

Sawyer Haas is weeks away from finishing law school, but exhaustion, dwindling finances, and the pressure to provide for himself and his daughter, Olivia, are wearing him down. A federal clerkship–a job he desperately needs–awaits him after graduation, but only if he passes the Bar Exam. Sawyer doesn’t have the time or patience for the capricious—if beautiful—dancer who moves into the apartment above his. But Darlene’s easy laugh and cheerful spirit seep into the cracks of his hardened heart, and slowly break down the walls he’s resurrected to keep from being betrayed ever again.

When the parents of Olivia’s absentee mother come to fight for custody, Sawyer could lose everything. To have any chance at happiness, he must trust Darlene, the woman who has somehow found her way past his brittle barbs, and Darlene must decide how much of her own bruised heart she is willing to give to Sawyer and Olivia, especially when the ghosts of her troubled past refuse to stay buried.

About the author

I write romances with flawed characters, characters with artistic hearts: builders, poets, and writers of various makes and models. I love to write book lovers; those who have found refuge, companionship, and escape in books, much as we do in real life. I like realism, honesty, authenticity in storytelling. I love to write about enduring love, soul-deep love, in as real a setting as I can make, but with big smooshy HEAs. I believe in diversity, open-mindedness, and inclusion. I like sweetness mixed with steam, love conquering all, and above all, hope. Love always wins.

SUGAR & GOLD (Dreamcatcher #2) by EMMA SCOTT :: REVIEW

SUGAR & GOLD – 5 STAR READ

Standalone emotional new adult romance with shades of the paranormal

SYNOPSIS

Nikolai Alexei Young was born with a special gift…one he’d do anything to lose. The heart and soul of every person he comes into contact with is an open book to his heightened senses. Colorful emotions, whispers of thoughts, the sour tastes of old memories…He feels them all. The sci-fi books would call him an empath. For Nikolai, his ability has made him an exile. He roams the U.S. alone, avoiding the glut of life in big cities, and using his innate talents to win money in underground poker games. Just enough to keep going, one town to the next. He has no hope that his life can be anything else, until he meets her…

At nineteen, Fiona Starling was trapped in an ugly, desperate situation until she freed herself the only way she knew how. Now three years later, living outside Savannah, Georgia, she is rebuilding her life on her own terms; seizing every moment and saving every penny so that she might fulfill her dream of moving to the raw wilderness of Costa Rica. But behind her carefree smile beats the heart of a lonely young woman haunted by her past, until a chance encounter with a tattooed stranger changes everything…

Fiona takes Nikolai under her roof for three sultry nights, waiting out the rain of a summer storm. She grows more and more fascinated by this brooding stranger with whom she shares an intense physical connection—a connection so strong, she wonders if there is something between them beyond lust and passion. Nikolai is shocked to discover that Fiona calms the raging turmoil in his heart. She alone silences the din of other people’s lives, and envelops him in the sweet beauty of her inner self. Every moment he’s with her—every touch of her skin—brings him closer to the peace that’s been eluding him his entire life.

But Fiona harbors secrets that she is too terrified to reveal. After Nikolai confesses his unique ability, she is caught between wanting to believe him and fearing he’ll eventually unearth her own dark past. When the unthinkable happens, Fiona’s plans come crashing down, and Nikolai discovers his hated ability might be the only thing that can save the woman he loves.

“Have you ever kissed a stranger in the rain?”

And this book is why Emma Scott has become one of our favourite Authors because wow….just wow. We’ve loved everything this Author has written, she’s made us cry ugly tears whilst making our hearts soar at the same time. Her writing is astonishing with every word and every sentence adding up into a vivid beautiful passionate masterpiece. Her characters just feel so complete and steal our hearts every single time. Without question, Emma Scott’s stories are quite simply stunning.

‘I held her the way you hold something you know isn’t yours to keep.’

We loved the mystery, the melancholy, the hopeful and the broken which made up for one emotionally addictive read. Two people merely existing rather than living, both with an ultimate goal to escape and to see the vibrant light instead of the weighty dark. Both burdened by heart-breaking memories; craving sunshine and a freedom free of accusations and reproach.

‘I didn’t want to die but this wasn’t living. I wanted an end.’

Emma Scott writes such multifaceted characters that literally come to life breathing passions and love into the pages. The air flowing through the words written as they come to life on every exhale. Quite simply put, we fell in complete love with both Fiona and Nikolai embracing them with our hearts as we followed them on a journey that was shrouded in darkness with bursts of vibrant colour.

“I want to walk in the sunshine with you.”

Fiona is living day to day in hiding with the ultimate hope of escaping to another place where she can just simply be. A harrowing past lurking like a dark shadow waiting to engulf her once more. Cutting a lonely figure until the night bravery embraces her and she meets a mysterious tattooed and pierced stranger. For one night only.  Nikolai is on the search for peace and solitude yet with the intrinsic craving of a soft touch and a healing love that quiets the raging storms of others’ emotions and pasts inflicting a myriad of impressions on him.

‘The inexplicable calm of being in her presence hadn’t been an illusion.’

As we read we went through every single emotion possible whilst gasping, crying, laughing and feeling overwhelmed at the love and passion. Our hearts were involved every step of Fiona and Nikolai’s sometimes harrowing journey and we cannot begin to adequately express how much we loved them and their story. With our hearts we urge you to read this Author and her words.

That’s what he is…Soft and hard, sweet and rough…I’d never kissed a man like this. I knew I never would again.’

THE BUTTERFLY PROJECT by EMMA SCOTT :: REVIEW

Standalone
A love story that reveals the power of forgiveness, and how even the smallest decisions of the heart can—like the flutter of a butterfly’s wings—create currents that strengthen into gale winds, altering the course of a life forever

SYNOPSIS

“Where you are is home…”

At age fourteen, Zelda Rossi witnessed the unthinkable, and has spent the last ten years hardening her heart against the guilt and grief. She channels her pain into her art: a dystopian graphic novel where vigilantes travel back in time to stop heinous crimes—like child abduction—before they happen. Zelda pitches her graphic novel to several big-time comic book publishers in New York City, only to have her hopes crash and burn. Circumstances leave her stranded in an unfamiliar city, and in an embarrassing moment of weakness, she meets a guarded young man with a past he’d do anything to change…

Beckett Copeland spent two years in prison for armed robbery, and is now struggling to keep his head above water. A bike messenger by day, he speeds around New York City, riding fast and hard but going nowhere, his criminal record holding him back almost as much as the guilt of his crime.

Zelda and Beckett form a grudging alliance of survival, and in between their stubborn clash of wills, they slowly begin to provide each other with the warmth of forgiveness, healing, and maybe even love. But when Zelda and Beckett come face to face with their pasts, they must choose to hold on to the guilt and regret that bind them, or let go and open their hearts for a shot at happiness.

‘I realized you could get used to anything – even alone for years – right until the moment you touched something better than what you had.’

Emma Scott is such a supremely talented author who is able to deliver emotional and character driven stories that don’t rely on unnecessary drama or angst to engage and captivate her readers. In The Butterfly Project, she has once again brought to life a story with characters we have taken to our hearts.  Zelda and Beckett felt so incredibly true, their plight, and their pain, identifiable and honest, we couldn’t help but become swept up in their story of second chances, redemption and love.

“Do you ever wonder, Zelda, if you’re allowed to be happy?”
“Yes, all the time. Every minute.”
“I hate to hear you say that. I hate that I can’t take that pain from you.”
“Me too,…for you. You carry too much.”
“Maybe we both do. But I don’t know what to do or what is too much to ask for.”

We first met Zelda Rossi, as the tattooist working for Theo in Full Tilt Duet. Zelda has moved to New York from Vegas to pursue her artistic talents and hopefully publish her graphic novel. When we catch up with Zelda she’s contemplating a move back to Vegas after failing to achieve the success she had hoped for. It’s then she meets a friendly, sweet and kind busboy.

Beckett Copeland is a man who exudes kindness, and is such a sweet and tender man, who’s easy on the eye, and shrouded in an aura of sadness. He’s made mistakes and lives and breathes them every minute of every day, and he would quite literally give away his last dollar to someone in need. Beckett is struggling to make his rent when Zelda makes him an offer that could help them both. Beckett is sceptical at first, but decided Zelda’s offer to become roommates could actually work out.

‘He smiled a sad, wistful kind of smile as the tidal was crashed around us, around him. I stood in the shelter of his tall, strong body and the water never touched me at all.’

Both Zelda and Beckett are crumbling over the guilt that plagues them from their pasts, both victims of circumstance, attempting to deal with, yet not believing they have the right to erase the guilty burden that overwhelms them. Zelda’s coping mechanism to deal with the harrowing memoires of her past is to bring to life her graphic cartoon, Mother, May I? seeking her vengeance through her art. Beckett seeks cathartic release through a series of letters he writes to cope with his guilt.

‘I wanted to listen to the sound of someone else’s breathing beside my own I wanted to hold a woman and have her body pressed against mine, her arms and legs wrapped around me tight, our bodies shielding each other from the cold. One person alone against winter was rough. But two people, together…..Together. A word I never used.’

For Zelda and Beckett, life is a series of events culminating in pivotal moments for them both, with Emma Scott exploring how one moment, one action/reaction can change our lives.

“No past. No guilt. Just you and me. Let’s top thinking so much about the past or the future. Stop thinking or talking or wondering what we deserve.”

Emma Scott has written a warm, beautifully textured uplifting and slow building love story whose foundation is the depth of characters and emotion rather than shock tactics or overabundance of angst. Through her words, we are made to feel Zelda and Beckett’s pain and loneliness, and in turn, we care deeply about their healing process. The Butterfly Project is sweet, heart-warming, moving and wonderfully romantic.  It’s a story that made us believe in fate and second chances, redemption and forgiveness……but most of all how love can be the most powerful healer of them all.

‘I felt sleep settle over us both, as if we’d exorcised some of the ghosts that haunted us and now could get a little bit of rest.’

SYNOPSIS
Kacey Dawson has always lived life on the edge–impulsively, sometimes recklessly. And now, as lead guitarist for a hot up-and-coming band, she is poised at the brink of fame and fortune. But she is torn between wanting to be a serious musician, and the demons that lure her down the glittering, but alcohol-soaked path of rock stardom. A wrecked concert in Las Vegas threatens to ruin her career entirely. She wakes up with the hangover from hell and no memory of the night before, or how she ended up on her limo driver’s couch…

Jonah Fletcher is running out of time. He knows his situation is hopeless, and he’s vowed to make the most of the handful of months he has left to him. His plans include seeing the opening of his glass installation at a prestigious art gallery…they do not include falling in love with a wild, tempestuous rock musician who wound up passed out on his couch.

Jonah sees that Kacey is on a path to self-destruction. He lets her crash with him for a few days to dry out and get her head on straight. But neither of them expected the deep connection they felt, or how that connection could grow so fast from friendship into something more. Something deep and pure and life-changing…something as fragile as glass, that they both know will shatter in the end no matter how hard they try to hold on to it.

Full Tilt is a story about what it means to love with your whole heart, to sacrifice, to experience terrible grief and soaring joy. To live life with all its beauty, and all its pain, and in the end to be able to smile through tears and know you wouldn’t have changed a thing.

“In case you haven’t noticed, I’m a mess.”

“You’re no more a mess than anyone else,” he said in a low voice.

Oh wow- this book was everything, absolutely everything. We loved every single minute reading Jonah and Kacey’s story and Emma Scott grabbed our heart and soul with her words. It was perfection- such beauty and heartbreak. Such tender and sweet moments. This is the kind of intense romance we know we’ll never forget, it hit us right into the depths of our hearts.

‘Little moments, day by day. This is what I have to give.’

The impact of what we read, the message of life and what it is to truly live and what is ultimately important. Well it’s all there. Love, inspiration, friendship and hope. Sorrow, grief and tragedy. All part and parcel of life. All written flawlessly with such realistic passion. Emma Scott gave us her all. A love of a lifetime.

‘I’d learned by now that everything Kacey felt was revealed in her large, luminous eyes. She cared about everything, passionately. She goes all the way up to eleven.’

Everything felt so incredibly real and the beauty of the characters had us riveted. We first meet rock chick musician, Kacey who’s a singer songwriter and a member of a band just about to hit it big. Her life’s not been easy and she’s lived a cold and affection-less childhood. This girl is starved of caring human contact and craves someone – anything – real in her life. Her life is empty of what she truly needs yet filled with everything set to destroy her. Until Jonah. The man with a plan. Jonah was everything- oh how we fell in love with this boy. A loving brother, a gifted artist and a friend. Jonah is as beautiful on the inside as he is on the outside, caring for everyone around him and offering help and support to Kacey – a stranger in need –  when he picks her up on one of the nights working as a limo driver. Jonah was as quick witted as Kacey making their banter a much needed and humorous reprieve. When you feel trapped, lost or scared and someone holds out their hand and says I’ve got you, come with me. When you feel their warmth, their support and their love – you grab that hand and hold on tight.

“We may not have months or years, but we have moments. Thousands upon thousands of them. Let’s take each moment, seize it and wring it dry. Okay?”

Kacey and Jonah – night and day. In theory it shouldn’t work but oh wow be still our hearts because it completely worked. These two brought the best out of each other and gave to each other what was ultimately needed- all the while two halves became a whole. Two souls entwined. Like glass, fragile and breakable by life’s obstacles yet strong and hardened by actual life itself.

‘No more living life halfway. We had to go full tilt, just like the card players did. I would hit instead of stay. Always.’

As we read we marvelled at Emma Scott’s ability to write a story where we truly felt every important moment, where we followed the characters at a steady yet intense pace. Where no character was compromised nor made a victim to the storyline development. It quite simply worked beautifully, expressively and passionately.

“I’m scared that I’m so busy being scared that I’ll never be anything at all.”

Whilst this is part one of a duet there’s no cliff-hanger and Full Tilt can be read as a standalone. We do not want to spoil this poignant read so all we’ll say is READ this book, you will not regret it.

“Don’t let me vanish, Theo. Please. Help me…”
