AXEL (Corps Security #1) by Harper Sloan – Review & Giveaway

Note from the author–This book is intended for a mature reading audience and isn’t suitable for younger readers. Brash language, sexual hotness, delectable alpha males, some violence and adult situations are all over this book–you have been warned! **wink**

Fate hasn’t always been friends with Isabelle West. In fact, fate has been a downright bitch.
Isabelle has learned the hard way how hard life can be when fate isn’t by your side. It can hand you dreams on silver platters, but it can snatch them right back and hand you nightmares. One thing Isabelle knew for sure fate was consistent with was taking away everything she ever loved.
For the last two years Isabelle has been slowly clearing the clouds of her past. Happiness is finally on the horizon. She has a thriving business, great friends, and her life back. All she has to do is jump over the last hurdle…her ex-husband.
When problems start causing her to fear her new life, and memories that are better left forgotten start rushing to the surface the last thing she needs is a ghost from her past to come knocking on her door.
Axel never thought he would look into the eyes of Isabelle West again, and he wasn’t sure he wanted to now. He’s carried his anger for so long he isn’t sure he can just turn it off, but when he is faced with protecting her and an unexpected desire to have her again, life gets a little more complicated.
How will Axel and Isabelle deal when all their cards are put on the table and everything they thought was true blows up in their faces?

Jenny:  I did enjoy this second chance love story of Axel and Izzy.  I’m a sucker for these types of stories! Add a bunch of hot men into the mix, not to mention the second chance at love being with your first love and the love of your life and, yeah, I’m sold!

I loved the concept of this story – as I said, this type of storyline always sucks me in and Izzy and Axel’s story was no different. The prologue, wow, that was powerful and a great introduction to the story.  It certainly gripped me and had me anticipating what was to come.  Izzy and Axel shared a rare love. One so deep, so ingrained in each other’s hearts – their love was so much a part of them that you hoped, with every page they would work their way back to each other and find the happiness they both craved and deserved.

“Izzy and me, we were what some would call a fairy tale, if you believe in that shit….”

There’s was a love that had to withstand miscommunication, outside influences, tragedy….well, you name it, and it was thrown at these two.  These two were passionate and intense with tragic pasts and missed years between them. Their stories were quite heartbreaking as was the circumstances in which they found themselves separated.

“I miss my dreams, the sun, and I miss him. So fucking much.”

So we meet Axel. What can I say about this seriously hot alpha Ex-marine with the very, very naughty mouth but a softie romantic underneath…yep, he’s swoon worthy.

And the rest of the Corps Security? Well just wait until you meet these guys! Holy hotness! So much alpha in one place! Oh my goodness!

Let me start by saying that I really did admire Izzy for what she went through and the courage and strength she showed in order  to escape the situation she found herself in.  To move on from that and garner the strength she did was admirable.

But…..what I didn’t like was her treatment of Greg and because of that I felt a little disconnected from her at times.  Yes, I get that she was disappointed with him over what he did but I felt her treatment of him was unjustified. I mean, wow, here is a guy who had been there for her through it all. He picked her up when she was at rock bottom; he cared for her and protected her – ALWAYS! Yet she was so quick to dismiss him from her life when she felt she had been slighted.  This big, beautiful man gave her everything.

“Don’t you worry, baby girl, we’ve got you now.”

He never judged Izzy and he was her friend without question.  This guy had a heart the size of Texas and it irritated me the way Izzy overacted to him. I felt it was a little unfair.

I have to say that whilst I did enjoy Axel, I feel it would be remiss off me not to mention the similarities I felt were evident between this story and The Dream Man/Rock Chick Series.  It felt very reminiscent of KA’s books and a few times I found that I was mentally pulling myself up on it which caused me to lose a bit of this story along the way.

Having said that, this was an entertaining, engaging and very hot read told through two alternating POV’s.  These two lovers torn apart by situations beyond their control, finding their way back to one another and finding love and happiness after everything they’ve gone through really did hold my interest.

“And there it is, that face that can bring me to my knees.”

I am looking forward to more in this series. I particularly want to hear Maddox and Greg’s stories! Now, there are two guys with something to tell!

What about you Gitte? How did you feel about Axel?

Gitte: I did enjoy AXEL; it was hot, passionate, thrilling and emotional. The prologue had my heart pounding and I was hooked, it certainly grabs you from the get go! Also, second chance at love….you can’t beat it! I thought the crux of the story line was really refreshing and I loved that.

“I still love him. This man that I have thought was forever lost to me. If I am completely honest with myself, I never stopped loving him. But, all this knowledge shouldn’t scare me. The teenage love we shared over a decade ago has grown with such a power that it will kill me if I lose it again.”

Two people in love, waiting to spend the rest of their life together only to be ripped apart by threats, lies and miss-communications. Well, it broke my heart, as their love was definitely meant to be. They love each other fiercely! Imagine never knowing why your love left you…..

“It would have been quicker if she had stuck around and shot me in the fucking chest. At least I would have died instantly, instead of bleeding out slowly for the last twelve years.”

Izzy hasn’t had it easy. She lost the love of her life and married a right bastard; a bastard that broke her.  Izzy lives in fear and it all comes to a head and changes her life as she knows it..

“I haven’t always been this weak person; this broken woman. I used to dream, and when I did, I dreamt big. I had plans, plans of a future so bright it would blind you. I can still remember the day those dreams, those grand plans, and that future as bright as the sun went poof.”

I felt awful reading Izzy’s story, it really touched me. For someone who’s been through as much as she has, she shows real strength and courage. However, I did have a few issues with her as a heroine. Her treatment of Greg. I completely agree with you Jenny. I just didn’t get her issue after everything this big hearted man has done for her. Her attitude towards him after a certain scene baffled me and I thought it went too far. After that she started to grate on me a little bit what with confessing her story to everyone but the person who needs to hear it the most whilst in the arms of every man other than Axel. This might sound harsh but I just didn’t quite get this behaviour. Izzy came good in the end though and redeemed herself to me.

Now, Axel was as alpha as they get. Bloody hell, he was like a huge intimidating brick wall through the majority of this story with one hell of a filthy mouth. If it wasn’t for the fact that we got to see his tender soft side every so often revealed through his confessions of love and loss; his years of searching for Izzy. Well, he would’ve been completely over the top if not for those.

“Never again, Izzy West. I will never again let anyone take you from me, or anything from us.”

“She was mine.

She is mine.

She will always fucking be mine.”

I really liked the interactions between Izzy and Axel. They had drama, altercations, humour and full on passion.

“Axel Reid, you wake up right now!” I yell. “Get your paws off my tit and call your dick off its search for my pussy, he found it asshole, now back off.”

So, overall, I enjoyed the first instalment in this series. I loved the changing of POV’s and the epilogue was fab.  I have to agree though Jenny, this book and I’m going to hazard a guess, the whole series, is very reminiscent of Kristen Ashley’s Rock Chicks. So many times through reading, I was reminded of this fact and I had to stop myself from making comparisons. Saying that I loved Izzy and Axel’s journey to find the love that was torn from them. And yes, I look forward to reading the next book in line and I agree, for me I can’t wait for Maddox’s story.
