‘The Belladonna and the Mani di forbice.’
‘The beautiful poison and the duel blades.’

We’ve read every single JJ McAvoy book, and bar one, we’ve loved and fallen in love with every single one. Her stories are compelling and an indulgence we love to partake in. This is a spin-off of the Ruthless People series featuring the children of Liam and Melody Callahan. Whilst this series can be read on it’s own, we highly recommend reading the Ruthless People Series, as not only is it one of our all-time favourite mafia/mobster series, you’ll also get much more out of this series.

‘To repent they must be sorry. To be sorry they must feel pain. So let there be pain.’

Without question, this Author excels at writing intensely intriguing and downright exciting mobster stories. She’s one of our all-time favourites. The Children of Vice series features the stories of adult siblings- Ethan, Donatella and Wyatt Callahan.

‘Fury. Wrath. Rage. Death. Ethan, at this very moment, was all of those things, personified in silence.’

This first book is Ethan Callahan’s story- the oldest brother. Now, if you’ve read Ruthless People you know what kind of childhood this boy had and as the head of the family you know the shoes he has to fill. If not, the Author does a good job of catching the reader up. If you know us, you know we absolutely love our anti-heroes and they don’t come much more anti than this man. He is a power of reckoning, meticulous in his revenge and powerful in his planning. Nothing fazes him. You could say he is as cold as ice with no second thought to when and how as long as it plays out in favour and as he planned it, using other lives as collateral or weapons with an almost domino effect. He is incredible- he is cold in his ruthlessness. The pressure and weight on his shoulders is immense and he knows no other way nor a different life.

‘Ivy O’Davoren was mine, and now the whole world would know.’

Who in their possible right mind could be with a man like Ethan or possibly live up to the role as wife of the ultimate mastermind, the puppet master: Mani di forbice? Well, we couldn’t imagine, yet there she was; Ivy O’Davoren – the belladonna. This woman is fierce, wronged, cold and accepting of the fates. Their story was on the edge of your seat reading. Every so often our jaws dropped as the plot unfolded. Surprising twists and secrets revealed. Over the top? Absolutely! However, there is no question that sometimes over the top works as it satisfies a craving that needs to be filled.

“…the world isn’t black or white. Sometimes you need to do bad to do good and worse to do even better. The Callahan’s made themselves the worst. The money, the fame, the power was built on blood and bones. Why? Because no one else could do it.”

We couldn’t put this book down for love nor money, it was truly compelling and gripping. JJ McAvoy has such a talent for balancing darkness with humour -in the sense that- something horrific could’ve just happened yet the sarcastic wit and almost dark comedic timing immediately veils the sombre somewhat melancholy mood. Sibling relationships are hard at the best of time, however, if you’re siblings at the top of a mobster dynasty; the spotlight and responsibilities heightens and results in dire consequence. And so the series continues in the next book which is Donatella’s story and wow…..we are dying to find out what happens next!

“That is the tragedy of women born with the ambitions of men.”

So why not a 5 star? Well, Children of Vice would have been a 5 star for us if not for the editing issues as well as some timeline issues that distracted us from the story at times. We have mentioned the editing issue before which seem to have continually plagued this Author since book one. We do hope she finds a good one that can sort this continuing problem out for her because her brilliant stories deserve no less.

“They said the Callahan’s are greedy and selfish, power hungry thugs who don’t care about their own people anymore.”
“They’re right.”

**A multicultural new adult romance from bestselling author, J.J. McAvoy**

Guinevere ‘Gwen’ Poe thinks her fiancé is the perfect man. He’s handsome, successful and he was her first…

But when Eli’s bride runs off with Gwen’s fiancée on his wedding day, they are left to pick up the broken pieces of each other…

That Thing Between Eli & Gwen (1)

“The one thing I love about us, Guinevere, is that we talk, we laugh, we tease each other, we laugh more, and we drink. Before being my girlfriend, you were my friend; I love that.”

There’s always an excitement that ensues when a JJ McAvoy book release is imminent. We never know what she’ll bring us next, stories are entertaining to say the least and this book was no exception. This author always delivers and will always be an automatic 1Click for us.

In That Thing Between Eli and Gwen, JJ McAvoy brings a frenemies to lovers theme and it’s a theme we adore. For the most part this was a drama free (we’ll get to that later), low on angst story that was full of dry wit, sarky fun banter, romance, swoon and heat. A sexy, gruff and pragmatic Doctor, and a quirky, sweet, almost ethereal heroine who share a common bond yet don’t get along with the ribbing and insults coming thick and fast, and let’s not forget the enticing sexual tension that simmers between them.

“One moment you were that other woman who got hurt too, and then you were Guinevere. Funny, weird, talented, beautiful Guinevere, and I’m thinking about how you smell like rain, and whether you’ve eaten. I don’t know how it happened, all I know is that I’m thinking about you, and not just like a friend. “

Eli Davenport and Guinevere ‘Gwen’ Poe are brought together after sharing a humiliating and very hurtful experience when Eli’s fiancée dumps him at the altar, running off with Gwen’s fiancée right before their eyes, hence leaving them both heartbroken

Despite the annoyance they feel towards each other, there’s no denying that after being somewhat forced together, there is an understanding of the hurt and embarrassment they suffered. Not only that but Gwen seems to bring out the softer side in the grouchy Eli and he, in return, brings out a slightly wild streak in the sweet Gwen, as though they were missing a part of themselves they found in each other.

“In your books, how would the hero and the heroine work this out?”
She giggled….”The heroine would have gotten on the plane and we’d have to wait for book two to see them struggle to fix everything later.”

Gwen challenged the handsome, sexy, regimented and pragmatic Doctor, she confounded and excited him. Eli drew out the kinky side of the almost childlike Gwen, and through it all the witty insulting banter never let up and they could certainly steam up the pages!

“What do women see in you? You’re such an ass.”
“Handsome and successful, what more do they need to see”

The dynamic between Eli and Gwen was spot on. There was no drawn out miscommunication, no prolonged back and forth with their relationship from enemies, to friends, to lovers moving at a believable and steady pace bringing with it lots of fun, emotion and swoony romance right along with it.

“We aren’t a movie, or one of your romantic book couples. We’re real people who have to deal with real shit day in and day out. “

We loved everything about this book for 90% of the time, however there was 10% that felt like added unnecessary drama. We were enjoying the easy flow of the story and inwardly groaned when a plot twist arrived so late in the game. It felt out of place and really, the story didn’t need it as it was more than holding its own and felt the story could have still played out the way the author had intended had it not been included. The character of Eli also seemed to undergo a bit of a personality change about this time that felt out of character to the Eli we had known throughout the book.

Life isn’t always a straightforward, there are curves and bends and tough choices to make which Eli and Gwen had to adapt to, and while we may not have particularly liked how a very small part of the story transpired, there’s no doubt Dr Asshole and The Con Artist melted our hearts, gave us a laugh and a story that put a smile on our faces…oh and that epilogue kicked arse!!! Loved this one!

“You almost called me Gwen.”
“You are my Guinevere; Gwen is for everyone else.”

‘Even after all of these years, Amelia London was still my kryptonite, and she still didn’t know it.’

Well *shakes heads* that was….different…unexpected…entertaining, off the rails and all kinds of mad and we did enjoy it.

We’ve come to expect a gripping and engrossing read when we pick up a J J McAvoy book and we can’t complain about the entertainment factor of this story even if we were left wondering “what the hell is going on?” a few times because this was one crazy ride.

“The only love that last in Hollywood is the one we fake and sell to others.”

First up we have to admit that we’re not huge fans of serials and feel the lull between books sometimes has a tendency to break the momentum of the story and so we don’t pick them up all that often, most times preferring instead to read the book in its entirety.  We do feel Child Star suffered in that way for us and think readers will benefit more by reading Noah and Amelia’s story in its totality when Child Star The complete novel releases on 24th November as we felt by breaking up the books, the story lost its cohesiveness and impacted on our enjoyment by being a little disjointed in places.

‘All of my best memories were of him…of us.’

That being said, J J McAvoy certainly did weave one rollercoaster ride here. What we thought going to be one thing turned out to be something else entirely. There were parts we loved and parts that left us a bit flummoxed. There was definitely a lot to take in because there was a hell of a lot going on.

The first book was a terrific start to this series and reiterated why JJ McAvoy has established herself as one of our favourite authors, she never fails to hook us in with her characters and the stories she tells.

‘I loved him to the point of idiocy.’

We do love a good Hollywood romance and especially one that loaded with love/hate passion, secrets, lies and sexual chemistry that steams up the pages and Child Star certainly had that and a LOT more but for us the extras didn’t always work and at times became a bit farcical.

The comparisons can certainly be drawn between this book and Fifty but we found that aspect quite amusing, at times it felt like a dark satirical look behind the scenes of film making which was quite intriguing.

Noah ‘the ego has landed’ Sloan was quite the diverse character, displaying a moody arrogance that made him appear an egotistical cock but that outward persona masked something very deep in this man. Noah may have come across as an arrogant arse but boy was he vulnerable underneath it all. The success and wealth he enjoys belies the secrets and pain he hides beneath the surface and we adored this character as we did Amelia.

“I think the reason we all love Damon and Blair is because we relate to them. After all, there is a sinner in all of us.”

Noah and Amelia share a past that stemmed from acting in the same show as children. They struck up a friendship, moved through adolescence and began a relationship that ended very badly. Both bear scars, regrets and animosity towards one another from that time, so when they are cast in the same steamy movie together, a movie based on an intense relationship and a bestselling book…..well, how do they put their past behind them and complete this movie and sidestep ALL the obstacles in their way?

‘The director said he wanted this to be tasteful, that it wasn’t pornography. But that just proved how naïve he was. Did he think I could tie her up, punish her, kiss her, and suck every inch of her and make that look tasteful?’

Child Star was like reading a fanfiction of a fanfiction. We were always kept on our toes but we did feel the chaos surrounding Noah and Amelia tended to distract from their relationship and the Hollywood vibe we had hoped to experience from this story wasn’t always apparent. We couldn’t even begin to tell you what this story is about…it’s suspense, it’s passion, it’s heat, it’s intrigue and it’ second chance romance all rolled into one exhausting, engrossing and insane trip! So hop on if you dare!

‘My first kiss? Noah. My first time? Noah. My first heartbreak? Noah.’

One thing we do need to address is the editing, or should we say, lack of in J J McAvoy’s books.  We’ve been with this author since the beginning, we’re HUGE fans and devour every word she writes and have given feedback about this issue both personally and in our reviews yet the editing in Child Star was once again terrible. We can accept the odd grammatical error here and there but having to go back and re-read passages to decipher what the author is trying to say has become tiresome and annoying and completely takes us out of the moment which is a crying shame because J J McAvoy is a brilliant storyteller yet the poor editing continually lets her and her readers down.

We truly hope it’s something that will be taken into consideration as we receive a lot of reader feedback telling us if it wasn’t for this author’s genuine and brilliant talent they would have given up on her books by now. We would hate for JJ to lose readers and feel the editing issue can no longer be ignored. The day will come when patience runs too thin.

HOLY HELL talk about a book delivering something completely different and unexpected to what we had imagined. First things first, PLEASE GO INTO THIS BOOK BLIND! This is one of those reads where  you really do need to allow the author and her story to lead you and if you do you’ll be well rewarded….not to mention, you’ll be hit for six!

We loved everything about this book. We loved the story, we loved the characters and we loved the unpredictable direction the author took us in!

“Why do you keep running, Felicity?”
“The real question is, why aren’t you, Theo?”

As we started to read Sugar Baby Beautiful, we expected a steamy romance where a damaged CEO billionaire meets a troubled beautiful young woman type read……you know…..they have HOT sex (oh boy do they have HOT SEX), fall in love…basically we were expecting a straightforward VERY steamy romance!  Whilst we got all that….we were also treated to a whole lot more and we should’ve known J J McAvoy would have something hidden up her clever sleeve!

‘She seduced me just by breathing.’

We could not anticipate where this author was taking us and as the story progressed we found ourselves ensnared in her story, completely invested in the characters, ordering takeaway to keep the family at bay and unable to move from our Kindles for a minute. We both finished Sugar Baby Beautiful in ONE SITTING. Honestly, we COULDN’T PUT IT DOWN! Wow!

“The lover and the alpha. I was going to show her she could have both.’

The characters were beautifully written and drew us in every step of the way. Theo Darcy….oh Mr Darcy…he of the black hair, green eyes, alpha with a touch of possessiveness and sweetness, with a net worth of $32 billion who left us a babbling mess. This man is pure sin and sex with a big dash of mystery and charm thrown in.

‘I had seen men who knew they were attractive, but he looked like sex. Like he had just had it, he was going to have it again, and he had mastered it.’

Felicity Harper was such an intriguing character. We really couldn’t get a handle on this young woman who appeared to be living a life that didn’t reflect her accomplishments. She certainly kept us on our toes!

“We all have scars, Felicity. It’s a hazard of living. Any person who is bright and bubbly all the time is probably hiding something.”

J J McAvoy delivered an intoxicating, surprising, enthralling and outstanding story and it’s one we can’t stop talking about, reliving every moment and all the while thinking…..‘We can’t wait for you guys to read this one!’

BLACK RAINBOW by J J McAVOY

Black

SYNOPSIS

A sweet and steamy New Adult Romance from Amazon bestselling author of the Ruthless People series, J.J. McAvoy…

After an erotic one-week fling with a musician she meets in a bar, Thea Cunning never expects to see Levi Black again. Then Monday morning comes around, and she discovers that her former lover is not only her professor, but he’s also one of the top criminal lawyers in the state of Massachusetts.

With everyone in class vying to be one of the twelve disciples—a group of twelve students that Professor Black takes under his wing—tensions run high. Thea considers dropping his class, given their passionate week together and their undeniable chemistry. After all, there are other (less infuriatingly sexy) law professors on campus.

But to accomplish her goal and get her father out of prison, Thea knows she needs to learn under the best of the best—and that’s Levi Black.

But can she learn under the best, without being under the best?

Black Rainbow

Rating: ✯✯✯✯

“You are not a black rainbow. I see every one of your colors.”

Suits meets How to Get Away with Murder!  Yes please! You know that feeling when sometimes you just need a book to entertain you. You need fiction; not real life. You need to be swept up in a story that can be classed as an easy read. We love easy reads; it’s a positive term in our vocabulary. An easy read picks you up and sweeps you away into….fiction.

Black Rainbow was certainly entertaining as it had a little bit of everything. It was sexy, intriguing, thrilling and drama filled at times. We do love the writing style of JJ McAvoy and her heroes are incredibly arrogant, lovable and bloody hot and passionate. Levi…we’d wear him on our legs in a heartbeat…sigh….he stole our hearts as he commanded every scene he was in – the cocky arsehole. As for Thea, well she’s another strong level headed heroine who knows what she wants and seeks to get it no matter the obstacles. She was a lovable heroine, no questionable doubt! Theirs was a match made in the court room and we completely believed in their relationship.

“Good things come too rarely for either of us to question it.”

We’ve definitely noticed a trend in JJ McAvoy’s writing; no matter how arrogant and bad-arse her heroes are they are the ones who show the more vulnerable and loving side. Whereas her heroines are the ones that come across harder and more reluctant to love and show love in return. In some respects it’s almost an emotional role reversal. We’re not quite sure that we love that aspect of her heroines all that much as they come across almost cold and emotionless. Whilst we did end up loving Thea it’s harder to connect to this kind of heroine, in our opinion. On the flip side though, in some respects it’s quite refreshing for the hero to have this endearing vulnerability whilst being such a dominating figure.

‘This could be my first loss, I thought bitterly to myself, as I watched her walk away.’

Black Rainbow was quite a powerful story and we revelled in the court room dramatics and the fierceness of our characters. Even the secondary characters had such presence. Our only few niggles were a couple of inconsistencies and conveniences which was a real shame as this story could have been utterly brilliant. So many twists and turns; heightened emotions and the sensuality and raw emotional aspects of some scenes made this read more and more un-put-down-able as it went on.

As for Levi Black; we LOVE him – LUSH doesn’t even cover it! We felt a certain sense of satisfaction upon reaching the end and would definitely recommend this standalone novel from JJ McAvoy.

‘There are people who are moved by the world, and then there were people who moved the world. Levi Black was the latter of the two.’

*We read an ARC of Black Rainbow curtesy of Netgalley. We have to assume that this is a pre-edited copy as there were a high number of spelling and grammatical errors.*
