THE CHOSEN (Black Dagger Brotherhood #15) by J.R. WARD :: REVIEW

5 Stars!
Paranormal Series : A scorching forbidden love threatens to tear a rift through the Black Dagger Brotherhood

SYNOPSIS

Xcor, leader of the Band of Bastards, convicted of treason against the Blind King, is facing a brutal interrogation and torturous death at the hands of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Yet after a life marked by cruelty and evil deeds, he accepts his soldier’s fate, his sole regret the loss of a sacred female who was never his: the Chosen Layla.

Layla alone knows the truth that will save Xcor’s life. But revealing his sacrifice and his hidden heritage will expose them both and destroy everything Layla holds dear—even her role of mother to her precious young. Torn between love and loyalty, she must summon the courage to stand up against the only family she has for the only man she will ever love. Yet even if Xcor is somehow granted a reprieve, he and Layla would have to confront a graver challenge: bridging the chasm that divides their worlds without paving the way for a future of even greater war, desolation, and death.

As a dangerous old enemy returns to Caldwell, and the identity of a new deity is revealed, nothing is certain or safe in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, not even true love . . . or destinies that have long seemed set in stone.

‘He would not sacrifice the Chosen Layla for anyone or anything. Not even to save himself.’

I inhaled the latest instalment from the BDB; every year as soon as the next book is released I go into hiding, that’s what a year of excited anticipation and being scared of spoilers does to a reader like me. I immerse myself completely into the world of the Brotherhood yet again, their continued fighting for peace as well as their ongoing personal lives where new relationships are formed and conflict threatens the old.

‘Sometimes. Though, for destiny to work, it had to make sure you were blind going into things. Otherwise, you would turn your wheel and hit your brakes…and avoid your fate like the plague.’

Once again I laughed, cried and fell in love all over again. I felt extremely frustrated at times, excited and worried. Going through the entire wheel of emotion is a rite of passage through every book devoured in this fantastic paranormal series. All the threads of storylines were once again riveting and ongoing making me desperate once more for the next one. The sarcastic humour and quirky writing at times was once again present making it feel like I was coming home.

‘Love was like life itself, she supposed. No matter how much of it you were blessed with, when the end came, it never felt like enough.’

This story was about Xcor and Layla; yet -as always- the side stories continue and new ones emerge. This one was always going to be a hard read as it was unfathomable as to how Layla would fare. I enjoyed reading their story; it truly was one of beauty and truth. Though I do have to admit that for me there were a  few series contradictions that surprised me in this one, however they took nothing away from my enjoyment and as always there’ll be sense in the madness.

‘Sometimes kindness and love could be just as difficult as violence to witness. Sometimes, when you were on the outside looking in, watching two in-sync people was a scene from a horror film, the kind of thing you wanted to look away from, forget about, banish the memory of – especially when you were about to go to bed for the day and facing hours upon hours of being alone in the dark.’

So many new revelations came to light – one extremely surprising one which I can’t wait to see developed! Whilst I did shake my head at times in pure frustration, I still loved what I read and overall ended up loving yet another two days spent with my favourite vampires and their extended families. I cannot recommend this series highly enough; it never fails to completely overshadow anything else going on in my life during those two days of compulsive reading. The Black Dagger Brotherhood feel like family, friends and they’ve had my heart since I picked up the first book a decade ago. Now I count the days to Assail & Sola’s story; The Thief, which is coming in 2018.

“Wherever I go, you shall ne’er be far from me. Wherever I sleep, you shall be beside me. What I eat, I shall share with you, and when I dream, we shall be together once again. My love, you are not gone from me ever, and I shall not take another. Till the very night I die.”

SYNOPSIS

Rhage and Mary return in a new novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, a series “so popular, I don’t think there’s a reader today who hasn’t at least heard of [it]” (USA Today).

Nothing is as it used to be for the Black Dagger Brotherhood. After avoiding war with the Shadows, alliances have shifted and lines have been drawn. The slayers of the Lessening Society are stronger than ever, preying on human weakness to acquire more money, more weapons, more power. But as the Brotherhood readies for an all-out attack on them, one of their own fights a battle within himself…

For Rhage, the Brother with the biggest appetites, but also the biggest heart, life was supposed to be perfect—or at the very least, perfectly enjoyable. Mary, his beloved shellan, is by his side and his King and his brothers are thriving. But Rhage can’t understand—or control—the panic and insecurity that plague him…

And that terrifies him—as well as distances him from his mate. After suffering mortal injury in battle, Rhage must reassess his priorities—and the answer, when it comes to him, rocks his world…and Mary’s. But Mary is on a journey of her own, one that will either bring them closer together or cause a split that neither will recover from..

The Beast

Reviewed by Gitte

The Black Dagger Brotherhood is still my favourite paranormal series after all these years. Whilst I haven’t loved every book in the same way, I’ve loved being part of this journey from the start. Being back with Rhage and Mary was fabulous and I didn’t think I could fall any more in love with this couple, but I did. The Beast was actually a really emotional read that had my heart melting into a puddle one minute, excited from the action the next, laughing out loud, only to suddenly burst into tears.

‘The trouble was, he realized with dread, when your heart finally stopped beating in your chest, everything that you wished you’d said but hadn’t, all the missing pieces of yourself that you had yet to give, all the failures you had stuffed under the rug in the guise of life being so very busy…that stopped, too. The mid-stride step, never to be completed, was the worst regret anyone could have.’

This is JR Ward, she never fails to write one bloody fantastic story and The Beast reminded me once again why I fell in love with The Black Dagger Brotherhood. I actually thought this was such a beautiful story at the heart of the ongoing fight the brothers have on their hands. It had such rawness, insecurity and vulnerability and if you know Rhage and Mary….well….you know that means one passionate and emotional ride.

“How is it possible…that you always make me feel so beautiful?”

He kissed her once, and then again. “I’m just reflecting back what I see and know to be true.”

It’s been years since I read Lover Eternal which was Rhage and Mary’s book, and the second in the series, catching up with them it all came back to me and my heart was reminded once more why I love them so. Whilst Zsadist has always been my most favourite Brother, I have to say, that after The Beast, Rhage seriously comes in close second. What him and Mary go through in this book was completely not what I expected and I loved every minute of it. The feeling I had upon finishing was like coming home. Home to perfection and what makes the BDB so bloody special! Oh and hot!

‘She was the watch on his wrist, the roast beef when he was starving, and the pitcher of lemonade when he was thirsty. She was his chapel and his choir, the mountain range to his wanderlust, the library to his curiosity, and every sunrise or sunset that ever was or would be…She was all the power in the universe coalesced into a living, breathing thing, the miracle that he had been granted in spite of the fact that he had long been undeserving of anything but his curse.’

I have to mention that as always we get POV’s from others in the continuing fight against The Lessening Society. We meet some new characters as well as the continuing Xcor and Assail storylines. Oh and Lassiter….MY HEART….that Angel always has me in stitches and I love him! He really needs his own book after all this time!

“Lassiter’s a fallen angel who we’ve somehow gotten stuck with. He’s like gum on the bottom of your shoe. ‘Cept he doesn’t smell like strawberries, he hogs the TV remote, and on a regular basis, you think to yourself, is that really the best the Creator could do with an immortal? The guy has the worst taste in television…”

I’ve had this reluctant love for Assail since I met him so can’t wait for his book but Xcor and Layla’s next which is exciting too.  If you haven’t picked up The Beast yet, do it! As a crazy arsed BDB fan this instalment was pure heaven. I laughed, cried, my heart melted as did my knickers…bloody brilliant Warden, once again!

THE BOURBON KINGS – THE BOURBON KINGS #1 by J.R. WARD

The Bourbon Kings 28th July

SYNOPSIS

For generations, the Bradford family has worn the mantle of kings of the bourbon capital of the world. Their sustained wealth has afforded them prestige and privilege—as well as a hard-won division of class on their sprawling estate, Easterly. Upstairs, a dynasty that by all appearances plays by the rules of good fortune and good taste. Downstairs, the staff who work tirelessly to maintain the impeccable Bradford facade. And never the twain shall meet.

For Lizzie King, Easterly’s head gardener, crossing that divide nearly ruined her life. Falling in love with Tulane, the prodigal son of the bourbon dynasty, was nothing that she intended or wanted—and their bitter breakup only served to prove her instincts were right.

Now, after two years of staying away, Tulane is finally coming home again, and he is bringing the past with him. No one will be left unmarked: not Tulane’s beautiful and ruthless wife; not his older brother, whose bitterness and bad blood know no bounds; and especially not the ironfisted Bradford patriarch, a man with few morals, fewer scruples, and many, many terrible secrets.

As family tensions—professional and intimately private—ignite, Easterly and all its inhabitants are thrown into the grips of an irrevocable transformation, and only the cunning will survive.

✯✯✯✯1/2  addictive stars!

The Bourbon Kings was reminiscent of a sweeping, indulgent Southern aristocratic soap opera with all the drama, lies, deceit and doublecrossing on hand…and oh the grandeur of it all!

“What exactly do you want from me.”
“Anything you’ll give me.”

This really did have the feel of one of those opulent and addictive melodramatic soap operas we loved from the 80’s so it’s no surprise to hear this has already been optioned for a TV Series. We can just see this playing out on the small screen! Think Dynasty. Think Dallas. Only the Carrington’s & Ewing’s in this case are the Bradford family and oh what a tangled web they have woven for themselves.

Outwardly they seem the epitome of wealth and propriety but open those majestic front doors and what lurks behind is a family in ruins. From their mother who is so dependent on painkillers she never leaves her bed, to a father who seems to have no feelings or scruples at all.

The story mainly focuses on Lane (Tulane) Bradford Baldwine, one of the Bradford clan and Lizzie, the woman who works at their estate and who has captured his heart, though we also hear multiple pov’s throughout form Edward and Gin (Virginia) Lane’s brother and sister; Lizzie, Samuel T (a long-time family friend and the man Gin is in love with) and Sutton (the woman who has stolen Edwards heart) with each change of voice playing out like an episode of a TV show.  There is another brother, Max but we didn’t hear a whole lot of his story so he is definitely a bit of a mystery at this stage!

Wow! The drama, drama, drama! At times we were gasping and clutching our pearls! Everyone has an agenda, everything is fascinatingly effed up and nothing is as it seems. It appears there are some people to whom stooping to levels knows no bounds.

Lane and Edward were interesting characters but it was Edward’s story in particular that brought us to our knees. This man…..the tragic turn of events this man endured broke our hearts.

‘Edward was ruined now, and not just physically.’

The relationship between Lane and Miss Aurora, the housekeeper who loves Lane like a son stole our hearts. Their relationship was so sweet and tender with Miss Aurora giving Lane the love he was so starved of as a child.

“I got God…and I got you. I am rich beyond means.” Miss Aurora

There was a lot going on and much unfolding in this affluent, luxurious society and to be honest we were at times left breathless waiting for the next big reveal.

“You’re the love of my life, whether you’re with me or not.”

We enjoyed The Bourbon Kings immensely and can see ourselves becoming hooked on this series! There were times it did feel a little too dramatic but it did tantalise our gossipy tastebuds. JR Ward uses analogies to perfection to a point where we could see, hear and feel this story played out before our eyes! She brought all the opulence, wealth, secrets and scandal to life in this rich and delicious tale of treachery, love, loss and deceit and we’ll be back to see how it all unfolds when we catch up with the Bradford in the next fabulous installment!

THE SHADOWS – BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD BOOK #13 by J R WARD

THe Shadows

SYNOPSIS

Two brothers bound by more than blood fight to change a brutal destiny in the heart-wrenching new novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood by #1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward.

Trez “Latimer” doesn’t really exist. And not just because the identity was created so that a Shadow could function in the underbelly of the human world. Sold by his parents to the Queen of the S’Hsibe as a child, Trez escaped the Territory and has been a pimp and an enforcer in Caldwell, NY for years- all the while on the run from a destiny of sexual servitude. He’s never had anyone he could totally rely on… except for his brother, iAm.

iAm’s sole goal has always been to keep his brother from self-destructing- and he knows he’s failed. It’s not until the Chosen Serena enters Trez’s life that the male begins to turn things around… but by then it’s too late. The pledge to mate the Queen’s daughter comes due and there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no negotiating.

Trapped between his heart and a fate he never volunteered for, Trez must decide whether to endanger himself and others- or forever leave behind the female he’s in love with. But then an unimaginable tragedy strikes and changes everything. Staring out over an emotional abyss, Trez must find a reason to go on or risk losing himself and his soul forever. And iAm, in the name of brotherly love, is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice…

The Shadows 13

Rating: ✯✯✯✯✯

“With beating hearts and open minds, we are all the same.”

I don’t even know what to say. I’m still stunned and emotionally overwhelmed. The Shadows was beautiful, poignant, passionate and quite simply harrowing. I can’t remember sobbing my heart out to quite this extent in a BDB novel since Zsadist’ s story.

‘Annnnnd cue the eye sting. Shit.’

It was epic JR Ward in every respect.  The Warden brought a whopping huge read that in no way dragged or stopped giving. This Lady is quite simply an extraordinary story-teller.  It’s old yet current; thrilling yet humorous – sexy and powerful. It has an edge and is all-encompassing. All the familiar faces as well as new and the ongoing storylines were there serving a flawless and vivid purpose in the midst of two heroic, profound and desperate love stories. Bless the Angel Lassiter for bringing the light and laughter in amongst the heart-rending pain.

‘Destiny was as uncaring and influential as the wind to a flag, carrying the fabric of an individual’s existence this way and that, subjecting that which it rocked to its whims without an inquiry as to what the banner may have desired. Or may have prayed for.’

Trez and iAm; how I love these enigmatic and fierce powerhouses. There quite simply isn’t any way I can explain how surprised I was that whilst reading their respective journey’s in love how their intricate tight bond played such an intense role in what was to be. There’s no question that JR Ward showed us what lies beneath and she did it in such a stunning way I melted and sobbed at the exquisite romance. The vulnerability was mind blowing as was the gentleness at which it was executed. It’s been one hell of a long arduous journey for these brothers and each has suffered for their own respective reasons. Payback’s a bitch and she’s one that I would gladly put my shit kickers on for and beat the crap out of. But I understand.

‘…such a strange emotional landscape this all was, deep valleys of despair, followed by vast vistas that were so emotionally pure and beautiful.’

There’s an intrinsic poetic beauty to be found in complete heart-breaking pain as there is in fleeting moments of pure blissful ecstasy. If you can see beyond and understand why some things happen as they do, you can find stunning perfection in what was; which will live on in your heart. In order to give back and readdress an imbalance in life you may have to give of yourself and live with what was and what will now be in future. Now; that’s where pain can be more inspiring and extraordinarily beautiful than what was originally perceived as tragedy.

“You and I were written in the stars.”

I cannot recommend The Black Dagger Brotherhood highly enough. I fell in love with this series back in 2011 and ever since then I’ve inhaled every new release. The Shadows make number 13 in this series; 13 being the number behind spiritual growth through pain and upheaval – of gentle  great power and ground breaking change. Signifying loyal souls who late in life find the soul mate they craved and unwaveringly waited for. 13 is poignantly the story of Trez and iAm.

‘…he soaked in the memories until they permeated his mind, body and soul with a glow he had never felt before.’

THE KING (Black Dagger Brotherhood #12) by J.R. WARD

17703290

SYNOPSIS

J.R. Ward’s # 1 New York Times bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood continues as a royal bloodline is compromised by a grave threat to the throne.

Long live the King…

After turning his back on the throne for centuries, Wrath, son of Wrath, finally assumed his father’s mantle–with the help of his beloved mate. But the crown sets heavily on his head. As the war with the Lessening Society rages on, and the threat from the Band of Bastards truly hits home, he is forced to make choices that put everything–and everyone–at risk.

Beth Randall thought she knew what she was getting into when she mated the last pure blooded vampire on the planet: An easy ride was not it. But when she decides she wants a child, she’s unprepared for Wrath’s response–or the distance it creates between them.

The question is, will true love win out… or tortured legacy take over?

The King: 5 blinding – back to basic – Stars!

This is book #12 in the BDB series, Ladies and Gents, so I’m not even going to get into the nitty gritty. You know what’s up if you’re loving this series as much as I am. If you’ve never read it, then do yourselves a favour and go get what in my opinion is THE BEST paranormal series out there. Where else are you going to find Vamp Brothers who epitomise everything hot, sexy and bad arse? Heroines who rock and a story that’ll keep you invested, addicted, laughing and swooning? Well, right here that’s where…and you’ll not be disappointed!

ALL HAIL THE KING!

J.R Ward is the Queen of paranormal in my opinion and no matter how long this series goes on for I’ll be gagging for the next book in line. Sure, at times a story may slightly lose its way, however, in The King we went back to what is so bloody amazing about this Author and this series. The humour, which is classic and rib tickling, was spot on and was once again brilliantly woven into the storyline. The dynamics and banter between the characters was magnified this time round and had my heart pounding, my pulse racing and I just couldn’t let go of my kindle. It was blinding perfection! True!

“Wrath – Beth x Overnight = Psycho-hose Beast”

Saying that this is Wrath and Beth’s story would be somewhat untrue. Sure, we had Wrath’s beginnings which had a consequential impact on their current predicament and ran alongside their present until it came to a crescendo at the end. It was pure magic and I loved…absolutely bloody loved how it all came to be. It gave me goose-bumps at the end and I may have cried a tear or two.

“There was a sniffle from the crowd. At which point, Rhage’s voice hissed, “What. This is beautiful, ’kay? Fuck all y’all.”

So yeah, alongside their story we had Sola & Assail as well as Trez and iAm whose book is next in line. Also, we had Xcor and Layla. These side stories were all captivating and had me inhaling every word desperate for more!

Sigh….I have to say that I’m in love with Assail who’s sooo bad but oh so good as well as filthy kick arse Trez and I really really want their stories like right NOW! Oh who am I kidding….I really want iAm’s too; he intrigues me immensely and I love the hidden vulnerability in him! The confessions in The King had me reeling as well as mesmerized! As for Xcor….hmmm this man is a contradiction and I’m not sure yet….

“Knock her dead, my man.”

“Oh no.” Xcor shook his head.” That shan’t be necessary. This one I like.”

Now, I have to say that I fell in complete love with Wrath in The King, he was never really a favourite for me, everyone knows I’m Z’s girl, however, I think we see a side of Wrath here that we were never really privy to before and I enjoyed every minute of it!

“When were you going to tell me?” He demanded. “Tell you what? That you can be a real asshole? How about right now.”

The King was jam packed with passion and moments that were in my opinion classic BDB. Whilst reading I felt like we’d returned to what makes BDB so fan-bloody-tastic and why I love  J.R Ward so much, I swear I have a huge girl-crush on her and if I ever have the privilege to meet this Author, I think, no I know I’ll faint in my excitement. You feel me?
