Standalone – Sports themed romance

SYNOPSIS

Being the only woman working for a professional baseball team isn’t easy. As the San Diego Shock’s newest athletic trainer, Allie knows all about long hours, endless travel, and warding off players’ advances. Given she’s already the subject of a handful of rumors about how “lucky” she was to have earned such a coveted position, she can’t so much as flutter an eyelash a player’s way if she wants to be taken seriously.

But number eleven is doing more than fluttering eyelashes Allie’s way. Far more. Luke Archer is at the top of his game and doesn’t let the fear of striking out keep him from swinging. This is a motto he applies both on and off the field, but Allie appears immune, seeming to view Luke as nothing more than caution tape on legs.

He’s a player, and in Allie’s experience, they’re all the same. She won’t risk her job or her heart to another one, no matter how different this one claims to be. But as Allie gets to know him, she discovers the number eleven the public thinks they know is very different from the real Luke Archer. He seems too good to be true.

And maybe he is.

Allie will have to confront the stories attached to a player of Luke Archer’s stature and decide who she’ll put her faith in—The man she’s falling for? Or the rumors?

Stealing Home
Reviewed by Jenny & Gitte

‘Luke Archer kissed like he played baseball – intently, skilfully, and like he’d spent his whole life practicing for this one moment in time.’

Stealing Home just stole our hearts! This book was all we love in a sports romance: sweet, sexy, sweet, very swoony, dramatic, romantic and hot! We couldn’t think of a better way to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon than being swept up in this book…yep, it was exactly what the book doctor ordered!

‘I watched Archer. I examined the way he held himself, the way he moved his body. Every movement was intentional. The way he commanded his body on the baseball field led me to imagine how he could control it in bed. It was impossible to conclude he’d be a sloppy, flailing lover who couldn’t please his lover if the end of a revolver was drilled into his temple.’

Oh dear lord, pass the fan because Luke Archer, prized top player for The Storm, was all that and more! What a book boyfriend he was! A gifted athlete, a generous friend, a loyal, loving and wonderful brother to his three younger sisters. This guy hadn’t had it easy, but he had fought for his family and as much as he loved the game, he loved that it gave him the opportunity to provide for his family together. What a catch he was!

Alley, an athletic trainer for the Storm, had caught the eye of Luke and things move up a notch when he invites her to accompany him on a Sports Anonymous photo shoot. That’s when the sparks really start to fly between the two. At one point he invites Alley to join in the shoot and holy hot baseballs the chemistry between them is ridiculously off the charts!

“Shit, Doc. If I’d have known you were into the kinky stuff, I would have found some way to get you in my arms with nothing but my jersey on sooner.”
‘Because you knew I existed before last night, right?”
“I’ve known you’ve existed from the first day you waked out onto the diamond at spring practice.”

Alley had fought long and hard to earn the respect of the men in the locker room, her reputation was of credibility in her profession, so when Luke propositions her, she feels torn between wanting this man and wanting to retain her reputation as a hard worker, not for who she sleeps with.

‘Was a few weeks or months of wild abandon with Archer worth the risk of losing all my credibility?’

Alley had prejudged Luke as a womanising pro athlete moving from one conquest to another, believing the rumours  – little could she have realised the soulful, beautiful, compassionate, caring and loving man with a heart bigger than his batting averages, that lay behind the rumours..

“You know my opinion on rumors? That they’re started by haters. Spread by fools. And accepted by idiots”

Being a pro Baseballer doesn’t leave a lot of time for relationships. The grueling hours, the time on the road, the constant intrusion into your life would make it hard for someone outside of that environment to understand and accept the demands put on the athlete, but Alley being part of that work understands those demands only too well, she lives and breathes baseball as much as Luke does, can their relationship move on from the passion that ignites between them? Can their past trust issues allow their hearts to become involved?

‘Whatever this was, wherever it took me, I wasn’t going to hold back. I was all in, to whatever end we found ourselves in. Feeling that was staggering. Accepting it was freeing. But living it was redefining.’

Stealing Home delivered a fabulous afternoon reading in one of our favourite sub genres. We loved it and whilst we did feel Alley treated Luke a little harshly at times which grated on us, there is no doubt we believed in these two and were completely swept away with their romance and passion.

“Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”

This review is SPOILER FREE. Please for the love of books go pick this book up and make sure you don’t have one of the most beautiful love stories set under harrowing circumstances, ruined for you. Torrin and Jade’s story will see your heart break and heal through a devastatingly emotional journey.

“He’d broken me though. My will, my spirit, my soul, whatever you call it. All of it. He broke it.”

We read the synopsis and were immediately intrigued and knew we had to read this story. And wow are we glad we did and that we’d not seen any reviews for it because it was not at all what we expected. It was so much more– a truly powerful and emotional written display of an astonishing story of love, hope and commitment. Of great understanding, inspiration and survival. A story of belief and strength of convictions.

“You brought me back…when everyone else just kind of left me behind.”

Nicole Williams gave us everything we could ever want. She gave us her heart woven into words on a page. Her restraint, her daring to be different, her sensitivity to her characters and detail to what is fundamentally the crux at the heart of this story – the love of soul mates no matter the circumstances and what the future brings. She stayed true and respectful and showed that less is more and when someone truly loves, they love with all their being. She made our minds and hearts take flight.

“Everyone needs protection from me. There’s something dark in me now, and I can’t get it out. It’s growing, spreading, and I don’t want it to infect the people I love.”

Collared is a hard book to review because so much of it could be spoilt and certain circumstances have consequences that just twisted everything and had such an impact on an innocent young love which was truly of the soul mate kind. We felt every single emotion our being is capable of as we read with a searing pain in our hearts that was ultimately overtaken by a love so intense and pure. It was perfection.  No question, this is our favourite book that we’ve read by this Author and truly showcases her brilliant writing. A standing ovation from us for Nicole Williams on a story we’re certain not to forget.

Gitte:    I really liked this book it was very well written, it had everything I love; swoon worthy moments, emotional heart break, JUDE, angst and lots of romance…oh and it had JUDE!!!!

Jenny:   I agree.  I  really liked it. At first I was thinking Jude was a bit over the top with how he reacted to some situations but boy I do love this guy!  He really feels for his woman that’s for sure!

Gitte:    It was a really quick read and through most of it I was either pretty peeved off or my heart was breaking!

Jenny:   This was definitely a quick and intense read – and yes, my heart was breaking in parts too.  I really felt for Jude in this book and at times was a bit annoyed at Lucy.

Gitte:    This story, to me, was basically all about trust and the question if love can possibly survive when trust is being chipped at continuously or when jealousy rears its ugly head?!

Jenny:   To me this was a journey for Luce and Jude in finding that love isn’t always hearts and flowers.  Love has to be nurtured and worked at – one of the quotes in the book (and there were many I loved)  that spoke to me about this was “Love is what brings you together.  The blood, sweat and tears and hard work is what keeps you together“.  This spoke volumes to me about the book.
Jude and Luce had a long way to go to work at their relationship for me this story was about their growth.

Gitte:    Clash begins where Crash ended and sees Jude and Lucy attending college.  Jude, being the star on his football team, is assigned a “Spirit Sister”; enter super bitch Adriane, who is adamant she is meant for Jude and will do anything to steal him away from Lucy.

Jenny:   Don’t get me started on Adriane! I couldn’t stand her from the first line where she was introduced!

Gitte:    I disliked Adriane intensely, what a cow, I completely understood Lucy’s initial issues with her and why she was left insecure and vulnerable!

Jenny:   How did you find Lucy?  I know you messaged me at one point saying she drove you crazy.  Must admit, once I got up to that point I wanted to slap her a few times, even though I did understand her reactions to some situations, I felt she a was a bit mean to Jude at times.  I actually felt sorry for Jude in parts of this book.  He seemed to try so hard and I had to give him credit for that.

Gitte:    I got Lucy…to a point! She quickly started to grate on me with her behaviour and her treatment of Jude.  It got cruel, it really did, yes I know I am biased because I love Jude, but really that boy did not deserve the extent of her treatment of him!  My sympathy started to run out and I have to say Jude deserved a medal for still being there waiting. Did she redeem herself? Yes but barely!

“I’ll be here when you’re ready. No matter how long it takes. I’ll always be here, Luce. I’m yours,” he breathed, squeezing my hands, “forever.” – Jude

Jenny:   Oh god, those words did me in and my heart broke for Jude at that point.

Gitte:    Jude (sigh) still has this fiery temper which he is battling to tamper down so that he can prove he is worthy of Lucy’s love.  Lucy is his world (lucky girl)! I have to say Jude is one of my fave’s still, despite the fact that he let Lucy walk all over him at times

Jenny:   I must admit to finding Jude’s outbursts a little off-putting at times but it didn’t make me love him any less and I understand him because of what he’s been through.  It’s the only way he knows how to deal with issues and he is very protective of Lucy. He is definitely trying to be the best he can for her and for himself.

Gitte:    Lucy worries that their relationship is all about extremes, it’s either really good or it is really bad.  The emotional heartache she believes they can inflict on each other persistently weighs on her mind so she comes to the conclusion that perhaps they would both be saner and happier apart. At least that way, when it all blows one day, which she is sure it will, it won’t hurt as much as it would early on in their relationship. Yes, I can see that, but to me that is avoidance tactics, no way would you let a man like Jude go because he has passion and intensity! Right?!

Jenny:   Yes, I think Lucy wanted their relationship to be cut and dried but with someone so passionate and intense as Jude it was never going to be that way.  They had to learn how to have a relationship with each other and how to grow together.  I loved the line “Love is just as much suffering as it is sweetness“.  So true and I love the quotes the author uses throughout this book.  I highlighted a lot of them.  I feel Lucy thought her feelings for Jude were so extreme that maybe they weren’t good for each other.

Gitte:    Did I like this book after all that? No…I loved it because it got my emotions running high, I felt the heart break and love and despite the issues I had I felt the story!! Oh and it had JUDE!!!!

Jenny:   I really did love this book too.  We agree on everything about this book GG.  It had feeling, emotion, pain, suffering, angst and love! What more could we want from a book.
One thing I would really love is for Nicole to get inside Jude’s head.  I would love nothing more than to know what is going on there – I certainly get how intense he is and how much he loves Luce from Lucy’s voice but wow….I would really love to hear all that from the man himself. Hey Jude! I do love you buddy!

Love, love, LOVED this book!!!I was up all night reading this book, Lucy and Jude would not let me go to sleep!!! Nicole Williams did an amazing job with this story, so well written; so REAL!!Lucy and Jude; night and day, their worlds colliding in one dramatic way! Their story was very emotional, heartbreaking but inspiring! Their journey truly left me breathless with it’s raw emotion and drama. The struggles they went through truly touched my heart.

Jude is a true bad boy, he doesn’t date and he has a hell of a temper; then he meets Lucy. Lucy instantly falls for Jude, however, she tries to keep a distance after he tells her to stay away from him. This of course is hard to do when they go to the same school and rumors immediately start flying but not in a good way. Jude shows himself to be what Lucy knew he was truly capable of when he has her back at all times. However, their journey is not easy or smooth but rather one manic roller coaster ride of secrets, love, heartbreak and drama that you cannot get off.

“I want you to promise you’ll leave. Drop me like a bad habit and don’t look back, because God knows, it can’t be me that walks away since I’m incapable of it” – Jude

“You can’t be friends with the person you were meant to spend your life with” – Jude

If you loved Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire you’ll want to read this one!!!
