SUGAR & GOLD (Dreamcatcher #2) by EMMA SCOTT :: REVIEW

SUGAR & GOLD – 5 STAR READ

Standalone emotional new adult romance with shades of the paranormal

SYNOPSIS

Nikolai Alexei Young was born with a special gift…one he’d do anything to lose. The heart and soul of every person he comes into contact with is an open book to his heightened senses. Colorful emotions, whispers of thoughts, the sour tastes of old memories…He feels them all. The sci-fi books would call him an empath. For Nikolai, his ability has made him an exile. He roams the U.S. alone, avoiding the glut of life in big cities, and using his innate talents to win money in underground poker games. Just enough to keep going, one town to the next. He has no hope that his life can be anything else, until he meets her…

At nineteen, Fiona Starling was trapped in an ugly, desperate situation until she freed herself the only way she knew how. Now three years later, living outside Savannah, Georgia, she is rebuilding her life on her own terms; seizing every moment and saving every penny so that she might fulfill her dream of moving to the raw wilderness of Costa Rica. But behind her carefree smile beats the heart of a lonely young woman haunted by her past, until a chance encounter with a tattooed stranger changes everything…

Fiona takes Nikolai under her roof for three sultry nights, waiting out the rain of a summer storm. She grows more and more fascinated by this brooding stranger with whom she shares an intense physical connection—a connection so strong, she wonders if there is something between them beyond lust and passion. Nikolai is shocked to discover that Fiona calms the raging turmoil in his heart. She alone silences the din of other people’s lives, and envelops him in the sweet beauty of her inner self. Every moment he’s with her—every touch of her skin—brings him closer to the peace that’s been eluding him his entire life.

But Fiona harbors secrets that she is too terrified to reveal. After Nikolai confesses his unique ability, she is caught between wanting to believe him and fearing he’ll eventually unearth her own dark past. When the unthinkable happens, Fiona’s plans come crashing down, and Nikolai discovers his hated ability might be the only thing that can save the woman he loves.

“Have you ever kissed a stranger in the rain?”

And this book is why Emma Scott has become one of our favourite Authors because wow….just wow. We’ve loved everything this Author has written, she’s made us cry ugly tears whilst making our hearts soar at the same time. Her writing is astonishing with every word and every sentence adding up into a vivid beautiful passionate masterpiece. Her characters just feel so complete and steal our hearts every single time. Without question, Emma Scott’s stories are quite simply stunning.

‘I held her the way you hold something you know isn’t yours to keep.’

We loved the mystery, the melancholy, the hopeful and the broken which made up for one emotionally addictive read. Two people merely existing rather than living, both with an ultimate goal to escape and to see the vibrant light instead of the weighty dark. Both burdened by heart-breaking memories; craving sunshine and a freedom free of accusations and reproach.

‘I didn’t want to die but this wasn’t living. I wanted an end.’

Emma Scott writes such multifaceted characters that literally come to life breathing passions and love into the pages. The air flowing through the words written as they come to life on every exhale. Quite simply put, we fell in complete love with both Fiona and Nikolai embracing them with our hearts as we followed them on a journey that was shrouded in darkness with bursts of vibrant colour.

“I want to walk in the sunshine with you.”

Fiona is living day to day in hiding with the ultimate hope of escaping to another place where she can just simply be. A harrowing past lurking like a dark shadow waiting to engulf her once more. Cutting a lonely figure until the night bravery embraces her and she meets a mysterious tattooed and pierced stranger. For one night only.  Nikolai is on the search for peace and solitude yet with the intrinsic craving of a soft touch and a healing love that quiets the raging storms of others’ emotions and pasts inflicting a myriad of impressions on him.

‘The inexplicable calm of being in her presence hadn’t been an illusion.’

As we read we went through every single emotion possible whilst gasping, crying, laughing and feeling overwhelmed at the love and passion. Our hearts were involved every step of Fiona and Nikolai’s sometimes harrowing journey and we cannot begin to adequately express how much we loved them and their story. With our hearts we urge you to read this Author and her words.

That’s what he is…Soft and hard, sweet and rough…I’d never kissed a man like this. I knew I never would again.’

“Cricket is all I have. It’s all I’ve ever had.”

We love our sports romances and have read copious amounts, but we have to admit this was our first cricket romance. Having very limited knowledge of cricket as it’s just not a sport we follow, we were excited to see how we’d enjoy a romance set in the cricket world. We already knew we loved Anna Bloom’s writing as we’ve read her before and we were definitely in the mood for a bit of British. Did we enjoy it? We sure did, it’s a good slow burn romance with an epilogue that melted our hearts.

“Life.” And there it was, the one thing I never knew I wanted. A life of my own.

Once again we fell in love with the way Anna Bloom writes, it’s flawless, engaging, funny and has such realism. You feel like you get to know the characters and get completely immersed in the story of cricket. The Game had a real authenticity to it and it’s very clear that cricket is a sport Anna Bloom knows like the back of her hand. We do have to add though that for us we did struggle with the heavy focus on cricket in relation to the romance aspect. Whilst we love that the sport featured in great detail we would have liked the same for Alyssa and Jase in order to fully emotionally connect to this romance.

“This will be worth it?”
“It’s cricket. It’s always worth it.”

Alyssa is the queen of women’s cricket but is now the head fitness coach of a T20 cricket team after suffering an injury as well as the loss of her brother and his wife. Circumstances changed by tragedy means looking after her nephew whilst trying to stay in the sport she loves so dearly. Cricket to her is like breathing. Much to her annoyance the new Captain is England’s former test cricket captain, Jase Willis.  For both of them it’s a clear case of their hearts being owned by the sport and feeling lost without it. A brief meeting in the past has Alyssa dreading having to work so closely with him.

Alyssa is existing but not living life as such, her love for her nephew and her brother’s memory means she’s put parts of her own life on complete hold. Sometimes it takes love to show you the way and that’s exactly what happens to Alyssa, albeit reluctantly.

‘This was a game to him and the kiss had been a tactic of his offense. Well screw him; I wasn’t going to play the game.’

Jase Willis is known for his bad temper, his womanizing ways and his fortitude on the green. He’s a brooding enigmatic powerhouse and Alyssa has quite the battle on her hands; a battle that changes face after spending more time with Jase, the Lion. Frustrating doesn’t even cover it and a relationship which began on rocky grounds moves onto a more stable and even road of romance. If you love enemies to lovers and second chance love with a heavy element of sport then this is definitely a book for you.

“There are so many reasons why that shouldn’t have worked,” his voice was low.
“But my God, I’m glad it did.”

THE MOON SHINES RED (Heart of Darkness #1) by PAMELA SPARKMAN :: REVIEW

Paranormal fantasy forbidden romance

SYNOPSIS
Award winning author, Pamela Sparkman’s fantasy debut novel is tantalizingly wicked, drawing the reader into a world of forbidden love where nothing is quite what it seems.

Lord Lochlan was cursed in the womb, condemned by the perceived crimes of his parents. On the thirteenth year of his birth, the red glow of the moon washed over land and sea like a faded bloody stain. Everything was bathed in it, including him. A constant reminder of the curse that marked him before he was born. Every night he gazed at it like he was lured and haunted by it. It followed him, it beseeched him. It called out to him. Just once he wanted to see the moon glow as everyone else saw it. Bright and illuminating. But he knew that would never be possible.

The all too familiar feeling of despair suffocated him, like long gangly fingers squeezing his neck, cutting off his air. He fell to his knees and begged for the sky to fall on him. He had suffered long and tirelessly and he was desperate for it to end. And yet, he fought to breathe. He fought to stand back on his feet. Because fighting back was as instinctual to him as breathing. He had come too far to let his loneliness and despair get the best of him now. He was battle worn and weary, but he still had a reason to live.

Or so he hoped.

He stood back on his feet and he fought against the doom that hovered over him since the day he was born and he stared up into the darkened sky.

At the moon that shines red only for him.

I should have stayed away from him. But I couldn’t.
HE was my love…my life. And he just might kill me.
So I guess that means…he may also be my end.

‘He smiled today. His smiles are as rare as mine, so I took his smile and tied it to the ribbon around my heart, where I can treasure it always.’

Pamela Sparkman is a new to us author and after reading and falling in love with this book, you can bet we’re eagerly awaiting the next Heart of Darkness story, because the secondary character this story will be about, completely captured our imagination and fascination and we need more!

The Moon Shines Red is a standalone and does have a conclusion, so if you’re worried for continuance or cliffy’s, don’t be. Just dive straight into Lochlan and Elin’s enchanting and beautiful story and prepare yourselves for a magical adventure in this urban fantasy romance.

We adore tales about the Fae fantasy folklore. Those pesky, treacherous creatures with their half-truths riddles and tricks, the alpha Fae who falls and fights for his love….the trysts, the curses, tricks and legends…sigh…they enthral us time and again, and we’re happy to say Pamela Sparkman most certainly treated us to an alluringly expressive and beautiful read, satisfying our much needed PNR fix.

The premise of the story captured our imaginations and hearts as poor Lochlan cut such a sad and lonely figure. This is a man who has only known isolation; never being able to experience the comfort of a touch, the warmth of a hug, the love of a woman after a curse was bestowed on him at birth, resulting in dire consequences for the person if they ignore the curse and touch him.

‘If he could make one wish, he would wish to have one moment in time where he could just touch her.’

Banished to a monastery with Searly, a Monk as his only true friend, (and what a heartfelt relationship it was) the pair have struck a firm friendship, with Searly showing a dogged determination to try and seek a reversal to the curse affecting his friend.

Lochlan has resigned himself to a life of seclusion and loneliness until he comes upon the beautiful human, Elin. This makes him want and need that human affection he has been denied all his life. However, little did they know their world was about to be turned upside down.

“Do not hide your pain from me, and I will not hide mine from you.”

Now, we could go into detail here about what unfolds, but where’s the fun in that? Oh no, you need to experience this authors bewitching story for yourselves firsthand, because there are surprises and twists galore to be enjoyed in this one!

‘For a reason unbeknownst to him he needed her to like him.’

This author had our hearts soaring over the lengths this man went to for love, she had our hearts beating and never failed to grip us with the surprises, twists, emotion, suspense and passion of this fantasy. The passion in this case coming from the connection between Lochlan and Elin. Their love was true, innocent, subtle, yet fiercely heartfelt. We believed it, we felt it, and we loved it. We certainly didn’t need a graphic sex scene on every page to convince us of the connection between these two, that’s for sure.

“I was willing to give you all the time you needed, I would have given you forever if you’d asked for it.”
“I know.”

Love, loyalty, friendship, forgiveness and hope. Pamela Sparkman did an amazing job of lovingly bringing Elin and Lochlan’s story to life, telling it with an old world storytelling charm that only added to the atmospheric surroundings. The vividness of the Faery realm, the beauty of her characters and the way in which she kept us glued to our Kindles was testament to the terrific story she delivered!

“…so you see, you love…it does matter. It matters very much.”

‘He stole my magic. He decimated my innocence swiftly and succinctly. And let me tell you something, innocence is like hope – a necessary element for survival. ‘

Wow! What a gripping unputdownable read! We couldn’t move until we finished The Tutor, after becoming instantly seduced by K Larsen’s menacing, taunting and deliciously tempting opening pages. From the sinister feel of the first page, we knew this one was going to be one riveting, thrilling and unsettling read, and one in which we found ourselves easily trusting our hearts and minds to this incredibly talented author. This was our favourite K Larsen read. This story was really something!

“It was all a game. He was the only one who knew who was playing but it was still a game. “

First off, we absolutely urge you to go into this book spoiler free, and our review will be just that. So much of this read could be easily spoilt and it’s truly one where you simply have to trust in the author, because every page ensured our Kindles never left our hands as we constantly tried to second guess how this story would play out.

K Larsen has done a tremendous job of intricately weaving a number of players POV’s into the story as well as a back and forth, past/present composition which she carried out with a seamless flair. We never faltered or got lost along the way as this authors brilliant prose flowed spectacularly.

The story centres on 20 year old bookworm Nora Robertson. Sweet Nora prefers to have her nose in a book rather than out partying every night and whilst book smart, Nora isn’t especially life smart, unlike her best friend Aubry who is the fun to Nora’s seriousness.

“I think my greatest error was believing that if I cast a lovely net, I would only catch lovely things.”

At the insistence of Aubry, Nora attends a party, the fallout of which, would have life changing consequences for Nora resulting in her need to escape and accept a position as a live-in Tutor at a remote cabin in Mount Art working for the ruggedly handsome Holden Douglas, teaching his younger sister. It would turn out to deliver more than she could have ever imagined.

‘I will become his masterpiece, my scars his legacy. He will carve his way through my soul to my heart.’

We learn Nora’s terrifying story as she recounts it to various parties. Nothing is spared as we hear of the pleasure, the pain, the tender, the heartbreak, the brutal, the bravery, the fear…in fact, everything Nora felt, we felt deep within us, as Nora’s memories, conflictions and emotions are constantly laid bare on each page.

‘Fear is a funny thing. It changes the way you think. It alters your being. I’ve learned the heart is a wild beast, that’s why it’s caged inside our ribs… that monsters are real and they look like humans and that love is a fickle beast. All my life, people promised that dreams could come true…but they forgot to mention that nightmares are dreams, too.’

Despite this being a dark romance, we experienced moments of moving tenderness which were intensified among the dark, unnerving moments, eliciting moments of hope and love in places we didn’t think possible, and in turn causing us to question our every increasing conflicted feelings.

“There are chapters in my life I’d rather not read out loud.”
“Tell me every horrible thing you did and let me love you anyway.”

K Larsen masterfully delivered a brilliantly written story that came to life as she captured the nuances of each character, leaving us teetering on a knife-edge with each twisting turn of the page. By allowing us into the mind of each player, K Larsen ensured we witnessed first-hand the judgements and thoughts of each character throughout this complex story that still keeps playing out in our minds long after finishing.

The Tutor was an absolute 5 star read for sure. You need to bump this book up to the ‘must read’ list, now!

“Your story no longer belongs to you. It’s my story now.”

LOVE MY WAY by KATE STERRITT :: REVIEW

Standalone moving story about second chances

Reviewed by Gitte & Jenny – Spoiler-Free Review

“For a minute or a lifetime, some people try to clip your wings, while others help you learn to fly.”

Wow didn’t this -new to us Author-, Kate Sterritt just steal our book loving hearts with this incredibly well written, emotionally intense and heart-breaking story. Where there’s love, there’s hope, even in the bleakest moments of grief and suffering and we felt every single moment. We fell in love with this Author and her characters, not wanting to put this book down for anything.

“Ki,” I said, waiting until he faced me.

“What?” He met my gaze.

“I’m really glad you found me.”

The corner of his mouth curled into a smile. “I didn’t know you were lost.”

“Neither did I.”

There was a sombre yet stunning melancholy threaded through the pages which led us through Emerson’s journey, as we learnt of her childhood and her incredible friendship and love affair with a wonderful boy, Mereki, spanning difficult years. Two youngsters being the light in the others’ world. The power behind their relationship was the kind that burrows under your skin and rushes through aiming straight for the heart. Poignancy and life changing moments painted the pages as the light faded.

“Say it with your whole heart and mean it. Say it because it’s your greatest gift to me, to our memory, and most importantly, to you.”

We learn how the impact of tragedy marred Emerson’s present. Whilst we knew the sadness was there and we knew what was most probably going to transpire, we did not know where the hope and healing was coming from. Until we did. And we found it to be through love, compassion and inspiration from a man who lives and breathes the powerful quality of art and expression. Beautiful characters, each with an important message to convey.

“Every day for months, I’d draw…It was something tangible and completely personal. I allowed my grief to bleed out of me onto the paper, and it helped.”

A heart incinerated by circumstance can heal even whilst being consumed by an all-encompassing love that will never lose its grip. It’s the love and light which is let in that can live side by side and bring the heart its survival. This is a story of the innocence of love and the after effects of grief. It’s a story of survival, acceptance and willingness to see love in more than one place. To open your heart to others and let hope and life blossom. It was quite simply beautiful.

‘You’re my shining light whenever the world is dark. Never let your light die because it’s going to brighten more than just my world.’

PROLOGUE TEASER for LOVE MY WAY

Even without seeing her face, I know that the woman standing at the water’s edge is desperately sad. Her back is to me and her shoulders are slumped, perhaps heavy with regret. It kills me to know I am partly to blame, and for that reason alone, it’s impossible to look at her. Leaning against the rough trunk of the tree, I close my eyes. My life will forever begin and end with her, and I’m unable to witness her heart breaking.

Standing still is no longer an option, so I begin to pace. Is she still waiting for him or has he already left? Fear pools in my veins at the uncertainty. Above all else, I want her to be happy. If this is too hard, I’ll have to walk away again. I let out a long breath, frustrated by the whole situation.

Emerson Hart is the love of my life. Unfortunately, I’m not the only love of hers. And therein lies the problem.
