BEARD IN MIND (The Winston Brothers #4) by PENNY REID :: REVIEW

5 STARS!! For this emotional, funny, sensitive and beautiful love story.
Standalone in a series (though we recommend the whole series)

SYNOPSIS

All’s fair in love and auto maintenance.

Beau Winston is the nicest, most accommodating guy in the world. Usually.
Handsome as the devil and twice as charismatic, Beau lives a charmed life as everyone’s favorite Winston Brother. But since his twin decided to leave town, and his other brother hired a stunning human-porcupine hybrid as a replacement mechanic for their auto shop, Beau Winston’s charmed life has gone to hell in a handbasket.

Shelly Sullivan is not nice and is never accommodating. Ever.
She mumbles to herself, but won’t respond when asked a question. She glares at everyone, especially babies. She won’t shake hands with or touch another person, but has no problems cuddling with a dog. And her damn parrot speaks only in curse words.

Beau wants her gone. He wants her out of his auto shop, out of Tennessee, and out of his life.

The only problem is, learning why this porcupine wears her coat of spikes opens a Pandora’s box of complexity—exquisite, tempting, heartbreaking complexity—and Beau Winston soon discovers being nice and accommodating might mean missing out on what matters most.

 5 beautiful Stars!

Penny Reid -for us- is always like a breath of fresh air when we pick up one of her books. She doesn’t excessively flower her words nor does she soften them. She brings an air of real life –undiluted- into her fiction which will touch many readers’ hearts for their honesty and singularity. Characters who swim against the current, a storyline that mirrors only itself. This is why we love Penny Reid. The beauty is always there and her characters have their own unique mould.

“Unless they’re polished, their colors will fade.”

“Like a person.”

“Pardon?” I returned my gaze to her profile.’

“People need to be polished to be stroked, touched,” her tone was abstract, “and when they’re not polished, their colors fade. They fade, they change, warp become something different.”

We have read every single Winston Brothers book in this series and whilst they’re as different as night and day in many respects, they’re really quite similar in their message. Every character has a specific burden or personal disposition to work through yet whilst a beautiful romance runs through them, the underlying theme always has such depth and realism.

“All people are broken, Shelly. No one is perfect. Some seek help. Some don’t. But no one is ever fixed by another person. We can only work on ourselves.”

We were excited for Beau’s story, who is so much more than just a wonderful and handsome, family loving man. We loved Beau’s character for how he was written and how he always stayed true to himself and his principles. A man whose heart is pure and loving despite the aches and breaks thrown at it. This man is a sunset and a sunrise; constant with such beauty.

‘But Beau is amazing. Being with him is so…effortless. Nothing has ever felt effortless before. And he wants to be with me.’

Without question this was Shelly’s story to tell and it was told in such a vivid yet clinical way that the effect of her words felt like razors in their intensity and honesty. It was a window into a tormented soul who struggles with control and their place in life; adopting coping mechanisms which may confound others yet makes life somewhat liveable for her. These coping mechanisms are stressful and controlling in their own right and makes for devastating reading. However, that is Penny Reid, and for those who stand in judgement of romance readers clearly haven’t picked up a book by this Author.

‘But I have always known –always felt- how embarrassing it is, to be this way. To admit that I can’t touch people without wanting to cut myself, to keep them safe from me, just in case. Because though you say I am not crazy, I know how I sound.’

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and cannot be measured nor compared. We all see beauty differently despite the yardstick so often planted in front of us. For us, real beauty is found through emotions, healing, bravery in suffering and without question can be found where you least expect it or look for it. The beauty of words can never be underestimated, especially when those words are found by that one person whose heart feels their true value.

“You are absolutely vital to me. I want to be just as vital to you. I want to take care of you, let me take care of you. You are my first thought in the morning, and my last thought before I go to sleep.”

SYNOPSIS

Beards, brothers, and bikers! Oh my!

Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the same devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why Jessica James, recent college graduate and perpetual level headed good girl, has been in naïve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life. His friendly smiles make her tongue-tied and weak-kneed, and she’s never been able to move beyond her childhood crush. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can’t stand him, and she’s pretty sure he can’t stand the sight of her…

But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. Jessica James has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane’s disdain; therefore she’s unprepared for the reality that is Duane’s insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks. Much to her consternation, Sienna’s most frequent savior is a ridiculously handsome, charming, and cheeky Park Ranger by the name of Jethro Winston.

THE CAD and the CO-ED (Rugby Series #3) by L.H. COSWAY & PENNY REID :: REVIEW

Standalone romantic comedy with a sports theme

SYNOPSIS

Keeping a secret this big is going to take lots of balls. Specifically, rugby balls.

THE CAD
Bryan Leech is a cad.
Or, he *was* a cad.
No one is quite certain.
Once the quintessential playboy, Bryan claims he’s done with wild parties and weekend benders. No more one night stands leading to mornings he can’t remember; no more binges and blackouts; no more exploits plastered all over the tabloids and rag sheets. According to Bryan, he’s cleaning up his act.
The only problem is, no one believes him.

THE CO-ED
Eilish Cassidy never thought she’d be a mother at nineteen or still in college at twenty-four. Cut off from every member of her family except her favorite cousin, she’s finally managed to put her life back together. Stronger and wiser, Eilish enters her last semester of university determined to stand on her own. Now she just needs to find an internship.
The only problem is, her best option—by far—places her directly in the path of her son’s father, and he doesn’t remember her at all.

THE PLAN
Bryan is determined to prove he’s changed. Eager to settle down with the right woman, he’s got his sights set on the gorgeous redhead who seems terribly familiar.
Eilish is determined to hide her secret. She’ll do anything to keep her child safe, even if that means ignoring her own wishes and desires.
But what happens when Bryan starts to remember? And what will it take for Bryan to convince the girl he forgot that she’s unforgettable?

‘She didn’t deserve to be forgotten. She deserved to be treasured.’

To be honest, the whole ‘secret baby, don’t tell the father’ trope in romance isn’t one of our favourites. More times than not we don’t feel the reasoning for denying the father knowledge of his child to be justified, leading us to become frustrated with the heroine and siding with the clueless Dad in the scenario.

But… we have a deep affection for this series and adore the collaboration of L.H. Cosway and Penny Reid, so it’s testament to their talent that we dove in despite our hesitancy over the theme of the story. After all, we had heard about Bryan’s carousing, heavy drinking playboy ways previously and were keen to hear his story, to see what lay beneath this wayward man and witness him find love….twice!

“I’m attracted to you on every level. I want you, Eilish. I want you with every breath I take.”

In this instance, we felt Eilish’s reasons for keeping little Patrick a secret from Bryan to be completely justified. After all, Bryan had no recollection of sleeping with her, not even remembering her name after losing huge chunks of his memory due to his over indulgent haze around the time of their one night stand.  It was a night of passion that had Eilish believing she had found ‘the one’ after hero worshipping Bryan for years. For Bryan, however, that night was another in a long line of forgettable conquests thanks to Mr Smirnoff.

“She has more unresolved feelings for you than Perrie Edwards has for Zayn Malik.” (Sean)
I stared at him for several seconds, dumfounded. “Who?”
He threw his hands up in the air. “See. This is half the problem. I should’ve used Jenn and Brad as an example instead. You’re completely out of touch, Bryan. Can you even remember how to seduce a woman?”

After hooking up with Bryan at Ronan and Annie’s wedding and leaving his hotel room humiliated and hurt, three months later, Eilish discovers she’s pregnant with Bryan’s baby. Fast forward five years and Eilish is back in Ireland at the request of her cousin Sean, who she has a really close bond with. He arranges a job for her as the Rugby Team’s Physio which brings her face to face with her nemesis, Bryan.

‘I was the villain of the piece, and we both know it.’

Both Bryan and Eilish are riddled with insecurities and trust issues, can they move on from their past and start afresh? We were completely swept away by the sweet and tender build in the relationship between little Patrick and Bryan and the witty banter between Bryan and Sean. Both big winners for us.

The dream team once again weaved their magic by delivering a story chock full of love, warmth, humour, emotion and loveable characters whom we took to our hearts, once again, delivering their story in their own unique quirky way. We love the way these authors deliver such life like characters. We feel their pain, we embrace their love, and we devour the wittiness and emotional connection between them all, feeling we know them personally.

‘Christ, I needed to stop touching her, because if I thought she was beautiful before, the fact that this woman was the mother of my child gave her a fucking halo. I swear, she glowed. She was radiant. As magnetic as before but also something more.’

Can a beautiful little boy melt the heart of a big burly Rugby player? There were certainly some angsty moments between Eilish and Bryan as we hoped and prayed they could make things work.  We fell in love with the protective, forthright and witty Bryan, he certainly had some wooing to do and he wooed us! There were precious, tender and funny moments throughout. We adore this series.

“……you’d break my heart.”
“I can’t break your heart without breaking mine, and I’m terribly fond of my heart.”

We’re packing our bags and moving to Green Valley! Right now! Those luscious Winston men are just so tempting! Each different in their own way but each so delectable, witty and attentive and we love them all, but ssshh Cletus may just be our favourite…just don’t tell the others!

Penny Reid once again delivers her own inimitable brand of swoon, sweetness, emotion and a dry humour we adore! She’s such a gifted, intelligent writer and her characters reflect that. They’re super witty and smart without being obnoxious. They’re so completely real and so completely lovable! We highlighted many giggle worthy sayings and many sweet and beautiful moments.

‘She was unhappy. I’d made her unhappy. Making Jennifer unhappy was officially the worst feeling in the world.’

We’ve been chomping at the bit for Cletus’ book. The man and his sausage have always been such an intriguing presence an oddity if you will. Just what was his story? We knew he had a few skeletons in his closet and we couldn’t wait to break them free and meet the girl who might just turn his orderly world into a chaotic storm. She’d have to be worthy of him though because Cletus had our hearts! And we’re happy to say Jennifer was all that and more! This woman was just divine!

There’s so much to love about this series! First off it always puts us in a happy place where we catch ourselves giggling like fools over the banter and camaraderie between the brothers. They may rib each other mercilessly but behind it all there is so much warmth and love. These stories are like a big warm blanket on cold wintry day we snuggle into, like a big comforting hug.  Simply put, Penny Reid makes us happy!

Cletus’ mind always seems to be ticking over at a hundred miles per hour. He’s a plotter, a thinker, a silent assassin. He watches, taking in everything around him, never missing a beat. He’s calm and collected and now we know why he behaves the way he does. And we think we love him even more because of it! He really is such a sweet, sexy, pragmatic, intelligent and funny conundrum.

‘He was remarkable, and yet he was determined people think of him as mediocre.’

For all his watching, there’s one thing he’s been oblivious to and that’s Jennifer Sylvester. The woman known as The Banana Cake Queen, she of the big eyelashes, big hair, dire dress sense, a superficial caricature of the girl her parents want her to be. Jenn feels a constant pressure to please. She lacks confidence and has lost herself and lost her way. She’s her parent’s meal ticket and would do anything for their approval, much to her own detriment.

Lurking beneath all that is a smart, charming and beautiful butterfly just waiting to break free. Jennifer is 21 with very little life experience in all aspects of life. Living at home, no income despite working ridiculous hours at her parents business, Jenn needs to seize back her life and LIVE. And she knows just the person who can help her achieve her goal of finding a husband and having a family to love and adore. Cletus is that man. He can teach her all she needs to know! But will she end up schooling Cletus?

“You’ll know one day, Cletus. You’ll discover what it’s like to find the other part of yourself. You’ll know it’s her, only her, always her. Maybe not right away, but eventually you’ll know. She’ll be your beginning, middle and end. And you intentions won’t matter. Love bring its own intentions, and all other plans, hopes, and dreams fade to insignificance in the face of love.”

Experiencing the relationship develop between Cletus and Jennifer was a thing of beauty. There was a sweet innocence to them that warmed our hearts and had us swooning. Seeing Cletus completely at odds with his feelings was hilarious. Watching Jennifer grow was spectacular. This was everything you want a story to be, everything you want to experience in a romantic comedy with emotional bite! Another winner in one of our most favourite series. Now…Billy? Beau? Beau? Billy? Whose book do we want next? Oh we can’t choose….we want them all!

“She walks in beauty, like the night
of cloudless climes and starry skies;
and all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes…” – Byron

“Dance with me.”
“Why?”
“Because you want me to hold you, but you don’t know how to ask.”

As Sienna would say……..“Oh my dear mother of all swoony sighs…this. So. Much. This.”. THIS BOOK! We want to wax lyrical about how much we loved this story and these characters. Those Winston boys are quite the charmers and their shenanigans sure do leave us with big dopey grins on our faces. And Sienna Diaz…girrrrrl…do we have a huge crush on you!

Penny Reid again delivered a feel-good romantic comedy with a poignant message which left us on cloud nine. If you’re feeling down and need a pep up, look no further than a Penny Reid book because her precision comedic timing, her gifted storytelling, her beautiful slow relationship build, her quirky characters, the kookiness of her story, the witty banter, the love of a tight knit family and the swooooony romance will have your heart singing in no time, as it did ours!

“You are so beautiful…I don’t think I knew what beauty was, until I met you.”

Jethro Winston (not named after Jethro Tull btw) is the eldest of the Winston clan who’s carrying around a substantial amount of guilt due to his past escapades and who is constantly trying to make amends for his indiscretions. This guy is carrying a lot on those burly broad shoulders, with some of it unwarranted.

“As a carpenter I know for a fact, if you want something to last, you have to build it to last. If we wanted to establish something lasting, we can’t build our foundation on just the physical.”

Sienna Diaz is a hot Hollywood commodity. A comedian/actress/scriptwriter whose star is on a continual rise. She’s a bit of a serial dater and always manages to pick the wrong type of man…mostly the shallow celebrity kind – the ones more interested in who can further their career than who can capture their heart.

“Think of how much better the world would be if people craved compliments about the beauty of their heart rather than the beauty of their face.”

Jethro comes to Sienna’s aid when she arrives in Green Valley, Tennessee to film a movie. She’s lost and on the verge of tears when this gorgeous, charismatic mountain of a man saves the day and assists her to her lodgings. They feel a connection instantly but this was no insta love, quite the opposite. Despite the searing chemistry between them, Jethro and Sienna’s romance was a slow and beautiful build. Penny Reid nailed the balance between passion, romance and relationship building perfectly.

‘I loved how he touched me, how he cherished me.’

Jethro Winston, you tempting, sexy, romantic…you damned well charmed the knickers off with your big heart, your flirty ways and your vulnerable side. You had us grinning from ear to ear with your wit. How could we not succumb to Jethro’s charm? Sigh. And how he handled schmoozy Hollywood big shot, Tom had us high fiving along with Sienna.

“Where I’m from, they call your kind a hipster or a lumbersexual, with the beard and flannel and such.” – Without missing a beat, Jethro responded, “Ah. See, where I’m from, they call my kind a man”

Sienna Diaz was the whole package. Beautiful inside and out. Although considered a ‘plus size’ in her industry, this lady was completely comfortable in her own skin. Sienna was sexy, endearingly goofy and her sense of humour had us in fits. She came across so real and down to earth despite her success. What an absolute hoot she was…we adored her!

Apart from the romance, wit and swoon factor of this story there’s the relationship between the brothers and their sister, Ashley.  The banter between them is priceless and as mean as they could be to one another and in spite of their past issues, there is this overwhelming feeling of love between them that captivates us.

“Congratulations, Jethro. She’s sweet on you. You’ve just taken one of the world’s most famous role models of feminine independence and turned her into a giddy, flustered mess of hormones. “

We fell in love with this book , experiencing that ‘feelgood’ feeling right from the first chapter, which never waned. Penny Reid has a way of delivering emotional moments without affecting the flow of the story or the mood of the reader. She is an author who doesn’t succumb to the notion of adding angst for the sake of angst and is an author who beats to her own drum, an aspect we especially admire in her storytelling.

For lovers of a fun and heartfelt romance, a hot alpha romantic hero, a gorgeous and real heroine, lots of high spirited mischief with six scallywag brothers, we recommend grabbing this wonderful series now! Your book hearts will be smiling!

SYNOPSIS

How can someone so smokin’ hot be so bad in bed? I mean, Sean Cassidy is absolute rubbish. RUBBISH. He is the epitome of walking, talking false advertising and I want a refund! Plus he’s an arsehole. So… what is wrong with me that I can’t stop thinking about him?

THE PIXIE
Lucy Fitzpatrick doesn’t like rugby.
As the little sister of Ireland’s most infamous rugby player, Lucy can’t seem to escape the championship-sized shadow cast by her big brother, or her mother’s frequent attempts to micromanage her future. Her rainbow hair is as free-spirited as her quest for inner peace, yet overbearing expectations keep bringing her down. And when she’s down, her compulsive little problem lands her in seriously big trouble.

THE PLAYER
Sean Cassidy is a cold-hearted brute… or so he’s been told. Frequently. By everyone.
His blonde locks, baby blues, and rock hard bod make ladies the world over drool with desire. As the rugby world’s second most infamous player, he should be basking in his success. But Sean has never been content settling for second place, and his frequent confrontations with Lucy’s big brother leave him cold. And when he’s cold, his compulsive little problem lands him in the lap of Lucy Fitzpatrick.

THE PLAN
Sean has a problem only Lucy can solve. Lucy has a problem only Sean can fix. The solution seems obvious: you scratch my back, and I’ll bail you out of jail. But when their business arrangement unexpectedly leaves Sean scorching hot and Lucy on the precipice of inner peace, can they convince the world—and Lucy’s big brother in particular—that this is the real deal?

Either way, both the Player and the Pixie are about to teach each other some pretty monumental lessons about family, life, but most importantly, love.

‘If I knew anything about rugby, I knew it was chock-full of testosterone and egos, and those two were not a good mix.’

We absolutely love LH Cosway and Penny Reid, each Author have a wicked sense of humour and a flair for writing a perfect mix of romance, passion, emotion and well placed comedy. The writing is flawless and the characters, Sean and Lucy, have such strength and individuality that we fell in love with both. We cried with laughter and our pulses skyrocketed at the passion. Sean is a hero to die for and Lucy is the type of heroine who steals your heart. Their story is hilarious and romantic yet sweet and emotional too. At the heart of it was such vulnerability on both sides which simultaneously broke and melted our hearts. Peppered with spot on humour, The Player and The Pixie was an engaging read which we just couldn’t put down.

“You must know how beautiful you are?”

“I’m too big and imposing to be beautiful.

“That’s ridiculous.”

“Is it? Most beautiful things are delicate, so fragile that even to look at them feels like they might break.”

We first met Sean in, The Hooker and The Hermit. He was an arrogant cold arse who’d wronged his team-mate, Ronan. You may think how on earth will I fall in love with this cocky male slapper? Trust us, you will and you will fall hard after he performs a straight tackle on your heart. Sean has become one of those heroes who leaves such an impression you won’t forget him. He will clumsily woo you as his character is so misunderstood. His story will win you over as he makes you laugh at his dry sense of humour, melt over his ‘inadequacies’ and swoon over his masterful teachings. The crux of the story as to how Sean & Lucy come to be is fabulous. It could have gone so wrong but it truly didn’t – it just worked without emasculating Sean in the slightest. In fact it made him that much more of a hero. Heart of gold!

‘She wasn’t odd. She was unique. She wasn’t freaky. She was free-spirited. She was enchanting. Breath-taking. Wonderful. Perfect.’

As for Lucy, what a genuine sweetheart. Being the sister of Ronan, she’s lived in his shadow for as long as she can remember. We met Lucy in Hooker and The Hermit and she’d already won us over with her eccentricity, flamboyance and endearing flightiness. As we sift through her layers, we truly learn what motivates her as well as what brings her crashing down. She’s one of those heroines that you just need to have in your life for the craic yet at the same time you just have this incessant need to hug her. Again, what a big heart!

“All I can think about is you, Sean. I’m into this. Believe me, if it weren’t for certain circumstances, I’d be wooing you like a motherfucker right now.”

It shouldn’t work, surely it can’t work. Can it? The obstacles are humongous….literally. Well, go find out for yourselves as it all starts with a – teach you I will.

“Stop the chit-chat, Cassidy. Put the penis in the vagina and let’s get this dinner train rolling.”

In the end we actually ended up loving this second book more as there was just something about it that truly touched our hearts. We just can’t express how much we love the Cosway-Reid collaborations, they just absolutely bloody work and they never fail to make us laugh out loud as well as fall head over heels at the romance.
