SYNOPSIS
The price of survival…
Gabriel Miller swept into my life like a storm. He tore down my father with cold retribution, leaving him penniless in a hospital bed. I quit my private all-girl’s college to take care of the only family I have left.
There’s one way to save our house, one thing I have left of value.
My virginity.
A forbidden auction…
Gabriel appears at every turn. He seems to take pleasure in watching me fall. Other times he’s the only kindness in a brutal underworld.
Except he’s playing a deeper game than I know. Every move brings us together, every secret rips us apart. And when the final piece is played, only one of us can be left standing.
THE PAWN is a full-length contemporary novel from New York Times bestselling author Skye Warren about revenge and seduction in the game of love.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT
THE PAWN BY SKYE WARREN

“You said you’re a virgin, but exactly how inexperienced are we talking?”

The most embarrassing part is that I don’t know how to answer that question. Girls in my school whispered about what they did with their boyfriends. Lord knows Harper has told me some dirty things, but they almost felt like a made-up story to me. People don’t really do those things to each other, do they?

I would find out soon enough. I’d experience them firsthand.

“I’ve done things,” I say even though it feels like a lie.

“What kind of things?” he says, and I wonder whether it’s prurient interest or concern that compels him to ask. “Making out on the couch when Daddy isn’t home? Letting a boy feel under your shirt?”

“No,” I whisper.

“Have you ever been kissed?”

I manage to nod. That was as far as I let Justin go. He pushed me for more in the darkened back hallways at parties, in the empty storage rooms outside hotel ballrooms.

And I always told him no.

“What are you afraid of?” he murmurs.

The way he asks, I know he doesn’t mean the auction. He’s asking why I never let a boy go further with me. He’s asking why I’m still a virgin.

Our position makes it feel more intimate, as if there isn’t a stranger only a few feet behind us, as if I’m not being forced to do this. The wavy lighting adds to the effect, as if this is only in a dream. I can tell the truth because this isn’t even real.

“Daddy caught me once,” I say as if in a trance. “I was sleeping in on the weekend, or he thought I was. But I was actually touching myself.”

“What did he say?”

“He told me it was wrong. He said that it wasn’t ladylike, that that kind of behavior would disgrace our family name.” The intense shame I felt then hits me like a blow to the stomach, almost doubling me over. It’s only Gabriel’s steady presence behind me that holds me up. He hardly touches me, only the lightest brush of his hands on my arms, but they might as well be made of iron.

“And then he was the one who disgraced your family name.”

“He put chili juice on my fingers every night for a month.”

The irony is enough to make me throw up. For years I resisted what the other girls were doing, refused what the boys wanted from me. The only boy willing to wait until marriage was Justin, and it turned out that was only because he viewed our relationship as a political stepping stone.

“Stay here, little virgin.”

He moves away from me, and I feel his loss like a wintry wind. I’m alone, bereft.

The camera clicks behind me, invading my privacy, reminding me of just how public this will be. I can’t even touch my body without feeling guilt, but some stranger will soon have the right.

“Look at me.” Gabriel’s voice comes to me from near the camera.

I turn to look at him over my shoulder. Most of my face is still hidden by my hair, but he can see more of me. Is my turmoil visible in my posture? Can they read the pain in my eyes? Everything that I believed was a lie, but the truth hurts enough that I want it back.

“Touch yourself,” he says.

My heart stops, because if he wants me to do this for the camera, I’ll falter. I’ll fail.

“Tonight. When you’re in bed, alone. In the dark. Lock the door if you need to. No one will walk in on you. Touch yourself and make yourself feel good. You remember how to do that, don’t you?”

The memory comes like a tangible caress, a stroke on my private place. My lips part on a soft sigh. Heat suffuses my cheeks. I squeeze my legs together, seeking more.

The click of the camera captures my illicit pleasure.

“That’s it,” the photographer says.

Gabriel studies whatever is on the view screen, his expression enigmatic. “Yes. That’s the one.”

“You’re innocent. And I’m going to ruin you.”

We love that excitement we experience when a much loved Author has a new series coming out. So when The Pawn landed on our kindles -which is book one in a series- we jumped right in. When you meet the anti-hero – Gabriel Miller– you’ll know what we mean when we say; consider knickers melting off at first ‘sight’ because woah!!! Once again Skye Warren showed us why we love her writing as much as we do, it has real depth and such fabulous characterisation.

“There’s only one thing I’m going to call you. Mine.” The possession in his voice made me shiver. “Never.”

We love our dark romance reads- falling in love with the anti-hero and the strong but wronged, beautiful heroine who loses a part of her heart unwillingly. There’s something about these stories, you just know that despite hating the fact that you fall in love with a wicked man, there’s something vulnerable and passionate hiding within him, it just takes a hell of a lot of work to find it but you know it’s there. The passion calls to you and you can’t help yourself. So yeah, we were there every step of the way with Avery as she sold a beautiful part of herself, encountering an enigmatic man who stands for everything she rejects, and whose role in her father’s demise may have been pivotal.

‘Everything he says is designed to scare me. Everything he does is designed to knock me down.’
“Be careful. I’m more dangerous than you know.”

The Pawn was sexy, enticing, dark, mysterious and passionate and we were hooked from page one. We felt the connection and whilst Avery was an ‘open book’ if you will – Gabriel stayed a bit of a hard nut to crack. What we saw, felt and experienced though made us fall in love with this man. The glimpses we got of what was hiding beneath convinced us of that. It felt as if a captor may somehow become a saviour?

‘I’m the pawn, and he’s my triumphant captor.’

Poor innocent Avery, everything changes from one day to the next. Her life, what she believes to be real turns out to be not so. She’s had such tragedy and emotional upheaval in her life, ruled and nurtured by a beloved hand of lies. The sacrifice she’s willing to make is huge, almost unbelievable, yet we understood her intentions and desperation.

‘I have to believe I’m doing this for a reason. Have to believe that it will be enough. There’s no one left to save us except me.’

Gabriel Miller; he saw, he wanted, so he took.  Yes please! This man has that whole over protective, dark and dangerous, insanely sexy vibe going on which we love so much. But….we don’t believe we’ve seen his complete true nature yet.

‘He is eccentric, but he’s also methodical, intelligent. Strategic. Everything he does had a purpose.’

Pasts are revealed, people exposed and hearts unveiled yet mystery and secrets remain. We have a feeling there’ll be more twists to come on the road of recovery, redemption, love and revenge. We were gutted when we turned that last page as we could’ve kept reading, desperate for more. We inhaled it! At least we don’t have too long to wait before we find out just where their story goes in The Knight. LOVED it and highly recommend for lovers of dark romance and their anti-heroes.

“You hurt me, you know….Whenever I think about you, I hurt.”
He puts a hand to his chest. “Here.”

4.5 ‘we need more’ stars!

A gripping anti hero story we couldn’t put down!

‘He takes my air and breathes it back into me. He takes control of me, and I can finally give in.’

SYNOPSIS
He seethes with raw power the first time I see him—pure menace and rippling muscles in shackles. He’s dangerous. He’s wild. He’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

So I hide behind my prim glasses and my book like I always do, because I have secrets too. Then he shows up in the prison writing class I have to teach, and he blows me away with his honesty. He tells me secrets in his stories, and it’s getting harder to hide mine. I shiver when he gets too close, with only the cuffs and the bars and the guards holding him back. At night I can’t stop thinking about him in his cell.

But that’s the thing about an animal in a cage—you never know when he’ll bite. He might use you to escape. He might even pull you into a forest and hold a hand over your mouth so you can’t call for the cops. He might make you come so hard, you can’t think.

And you might crave him more than your next breath.

Tough Love and Hold You Against Me
Reviewed by Jenny & Gitte

“I’m someone else now, someone darker. Someone you don’t want to know.”

We do love our Mafia romance reads, there’s just something about a tortured hero with a ruthless side and a touch of vulnerability, a man who will sacrifice anything for the woman he loves, a dark tale with danger and suspense in plentiful supply. When that’s brought to life by an author whose words and stories continually captivate us, we know to buckle in for one fabulous ride.

‘Suddenly his lips are against mine, warm and soft. God, I’ve seen those lips smile and twist and curse a blue streak, but I never imagined they could be this soft. ‘

Our hearts were pounding through Tough Love, the prequel story to Hold You Against Me (included in this book) that introduced us to Giovanni Costas, the eighteen year old son of a Mafia foot soldier and fifteen year old Mafia Princess, Clara Morietti who share a friendship and a blossoming love that is so beautiful and innocent in a world steeped in tradition, violence and danger. The Mafia way of life; where power is king, where marriage is a business transaction that has no place for love, a fact Clara and her sister Honor are about to experience. After all, Mafia Princesses are raised to look pretty, marry well and keep their mouths shut. Yet, they didn’t count on the love and sacrifice Gio would make to ensure Honor and Clara wouldn’t have to suffer that fate.

The prologue for Hold You Against Me is told in Gio’s point of view and what a harrowing, painful and heartbreaking prologue it was. The lengths this young man was prepared to go, the pain he was forced to endure and the loss he experiences all for love left our hearts a shattered mess.

“Where is the boy who held me in his arms when I cried? What happened to the boy I loved?”

Eight years later Gio and Clara come face to face once again, however, gone is the gentle hearted boy and in his place is a menacing, dangerous and damaged man, yet we didn’t have to dig too deep to expose glimpses of the tender man behind the hardened exterior.

“I want to look at you like this.”
“Like what?”
“With that hope in your eyes, like you know me.”

Those dangerous, brooding Mafioso men who we know, beneath it all, love their woman with passion and devotion make our pulses race and our knees weak. We can’t resist them …when they utter the word, ‘bella’ with such feeling, such possessiveness…well, we’re gone for. And we were well and truly gone for Giovanni, a ruthless tough guy with a loving heart that beats for solely for Clara.

“Bella,” he says, a wealth of meaning encapsulated in a single word. The love he once felt for me, the conflicted desire he now feels.

As for Clara, we found ourselves unable to connect to her on a deeper level. That was until we went back and read Love The Way You Lie. As hers and Honor’s story interconnects with this one, we felt we needed this background to her character to fully understand her plight and why it’s important to read Honor’s book. Clara never forgot the boy who stole her heart with whispered reassurances.

‘It’s right that I spent years mourning his death, because the boy I knew is truly gone.’

Skye Warren delivered a gripping and vividly mesmerising dark story which gave us a glimpse into the treachery, deceit and perilous world of the Mafioso. There is a passion in her words that challenges the reader and a beauty in her prose grips us in its clutches. This is a story fans of Mafia romance will devour, but please read in the order we’ve mentioned below to gain the optimum reading experience of Gio and Clara’s story.

Love the Way The Way You Lie
Reviewed by Gitte & Jenny

Upon finishing Hold Me Against You we immediately dived into Love The Way You Lie as we just felt we needed to know where it all started for Honor and Cara. As we started reading we realised that despite how it’s being sold there’s no way you could possibly get the most out of Hold Me Against You without reading this one first. The storyline is almost a continuation and you learn of family connections and get vital backgrounds. We struggled to connect with Cara and Honor until we read book one. It’s as if we went backwards and had several ahaa moments.

“I’m afraid of dying, but I’m more afraid of never living.”

So, in this story we learn just what happened after Honor and Cara escaped their Father – The Don – and a life being sold off to corrupt men of violence. This is Honor Moretti’s story. This is a story of two sisters on the run – when to make ends meet – Honor becomes a stripper and the pair of them live in hiding from the Mob. All she wants is hers and Clara’s freedom however it’s still not quite within grasp sadly and it doesn’t come easy nor cheap- it’s paid for by sacrifices.

“I think we never really get over the past. It’s always shaping us.”

Honor is not living an easy life and has to go through hell to support herself and her sister. A sister who seems oblivious at times yet understands why they’re there. After all she had a taster of what was to come if she’d stayed in the midst of the mob family and those who challenged it. Our hearts bled for Honor and we have to say we now understood the sacrifices, the fear and the tragic circumstances so much more.

Everything changes the night when a powerful man enters the strip joint and a connection is made between him and Honor. Kip, a man with a slew of secrets and a complicated past sets his eyes on Honor – or Honey – her stage name. We were swept up by Kip alongside Honor and followed their journey with trepidation and pounding hearts. Was all as it seemed?

“Oh, sweetie, you’ve got so many strings you’ll never get free.”

No all is not as it seems and a thrilling and emotional ride ensues as wicked ties and convoluted pasts collide. We really enjoyed this story and are so glad we read it as in hindsight it made us appreciate Hold Me Against You so much more. Again, we have to highlight how beautiful and evocative Skye Warren’s writing is. Simply flawless.

‘Did they take what makes him human? What makes him civilised.”

G&J: This story….THIS STORY!!! Read it and become oblivious to everything around you as you live and breathe the gripping journey of Grayson and Abby which begins in the least romantic of places; prison. Prisoner tested us at times yet captivated us in equal measure. When you’ve not had anything remotely good happen to you or possessed something ‘yours alone’ in life; when that something special comes along would you not fight tooth and nail to keep it even if you don’t fully understand it nor why? Would this not become an obsession to keep and protect? Whilst the methods are questionable the true purpose and meaning behind the actions were understandable. Our hearts ached; our pulse soared and our soppy love-struck souls rejoiced at the good old saying love will conquer all no matter where it begins and how ugly it gets or starts out.

Prisoner was extremely raw and dark whilst having moments of pure beauty and passion. The writing was seamless; stunning and extremely harrowing. Revenge and retribution is a dangerous emotional game; throw in love and unquestionable sexual tension and you’ve got one explosive story.

‘…to the outside observer, fear and arousal look like very much the same thing.’

This is Grayson’s story; an anti-hero who we wanted to punch and hug in the same breath. He was a puzzle – starting off in distorted unrecognisable pieces which, once pieced together, became a complete picture of beauty shrouded in perceived ugliness.

‘They say there are two types of fear –the kind that has you running far, far away, and the kind that shakes you so deeply that you can’t look away. For me, Grayson is the second kind of fear.’

We cried as we uncovered distressing details from our Grayson’s life. Believe us; the Authors didn’t need to expose or graphically dramatize his past. Just the insinuation and snippets had the hairs on the back of our necks standing on end as the tears fell.

‘The feel of brutality that hangs about him is compelling and….somehow beautiful.’

What is it about anti-heroes that we love so much? It’s a fine line between love and hate; exaggerated emotions that can blur into one intense passion. A passion which can only be satisfied when reacting to the hate with love. Grayson was an enigma unfolding before our eyes. Yes we hated him but we loved him too with all our hearts.

“I know what it’s like to hate what’s happening. And to hate that you like it.”

At the end of the day how can you not understand and empathise upon learning of the harrowing start in life he had to endure. And sweet sensible Abby; hiding from a past touched by guilt and suffering.

“Sometimes, Abigail, you have to punch a fucking hole in your soul to survive.”

Abby; the light to Grayson’s dark right? Well, arguably not as we learn what hides behind that prim façade. We all wear a shield to hide what we want no one to know about us. Abby hides her well until her soul recognised Grayson’s.

‘He takes my air and breathes it back into me. He takes control of me, and I can finally give in.’

Oh did these two fight for what they wanted; when really they wanted the same thing. The heart wants what it wants no matter how irrational and impossible it may seem. Abby is a strong and resilient heroine. She never loses the fight for what she wants and understands to be right in relation to what she believes in.

“I’m tougher than I look.”

“I know that sweetheart. You’d have to be, to survive me.”

So whilst this was not an easy read at times we devoured it and left wanting the next book in this series. We can’t wait to find out what happens in the journey of vengeance and discovery. We’re hoping Nate gets his own story because damn THAT man! And of course Stone. These brothers who have a bond so incredibly strong and emotionally unbreakable. So yeah; we highly recommend this book to readers who are willing to travel outside their comfort zones and who embrace every emotion possible to be had from reading.

‘I want to hurt her and I want to protect her. Break her and shield her.’

Review by Jenny & Gitte

Gitte: So Jenny, this story broke my heart and had me in absolute fits of tears, at times I felt sick to my stomach and I was dreading turning the pages. It was emotionally harrowing yet had bursts of humour, so extremely dark and disturbing yet sensual; it pained me and I was in absolute turmoil with the strength of my feelings which were definitely conflicted at times. This Author completely stole my attention, my mind and played puppeteer with my emotions, I saw this story play out. Unquestionably brilliant, intense, provocative and haunting writing with a thought provoking and challenging story and amazing characters that just pulled you in to experience their journey with you.

“Can Love Come From Pain?”

Jenny: When this one came up on our TBR list I have to admit I knew nothing about it. I went in completely blind and wow. I don’t know what to say about this one Gitte.  Skye Warren’s writing felt somewhat lyrical. It was beautiful and haunting and made this a truly pleasurable, albeit gritty, raw at times shocking, disturbing and addictive read. I did keep asking myself how much one person could bear. The story of two broken souls did test me and the author did such a fantastic job of keeping me engrossed in this story and these damage characters from the very first page. Oh they made me ache.

“I had traded one prison for another”

Gitte:  Evie bless her, she has had a traumatic life. She has been used and abused both physically and mentally. This girl was so sheltered, naïve, innocent, inexperienced and had never really known compassion, love nor has she had any stable normality in her life so far growing up. My heart ached for this girl. She was intelligent and realised her life needed to change, she needed to experience it and her courage astounded me.

“Not all those who wander are lost….I felt very alone and a little bit lost.” – Evie

Her anxiety ridden Mum has warned her of all the pitfalls of the real world and knowing the dangers she decides that to save herself and her sanity she needs to start her journey into the world. She has been warned of attacks and scary streets filled with dangers.

The anxiety is high. But this brave, sweet girl decided to brave it, to make something of herself and live.

“Happy Birthday.” I whispered. My present to myself: to finally see the place I’d dreamed about….for all twenty years of my life. For room to breathe. For freedom.” – Evie

Oh how I wanted to pick her out of my kindle and make her safe, remove the darkness that entered her life as a consequence of her bravery. Then she adapted, she understood and she got strong yet fell but let herself be picked up again by the ‘danger’ as she realised who he really was when separated from his action.

“I didn’t know if I could let this happen without a fight. I didn’t know if I could fight him, knowing I would lose, that I would end up hurt.” – Evie

Jenny, this girl and her journey…I can’t even put into words how much she affected me, same for you right?!

Jenny:  Oh Gitte, I don’t even know where to begin with Evie.  She really did affect me and how many times did I message you saying this girl was breaking my heart! Honestly…how much can one person suffer? How much cruelty can be thrown at a person both physically and emotionally before that person reaches breaking point.  Before they reach their absolute limit.   Evie was brave and possessed such a naive understanding of the world despite what she had experienced in her past. It was testament to her beautiful soul and spirit that she sought a way out of her surroundings. She wanted to live a life, to experience the world beyond her miserable existence.

“But the thing that decided me was that I couldn’t not do it. I couldn’t walk away from this challenge, from this chance to finally live”.

Gitte: The enigma and the perpetrator, the man who as a reader we should abhor, fear and vilify; the man who took something that was not his, taken under duress. This man is Hunter and he left me questioning my sanity as I read this story completely conflicted on my emotions dictated by my head and my heart.

He entered Evie’s life and when he saw her he wanted this beautiful innocent girl so he took and he kept. Hunter is not an easy man to read about. He is rough, aggressive and man-handles Evie making assumptions that belies her initial impression on him. What should have been one nightmare of a night for Evie at the hands of this man turns into something else entirely heart-breaking when Hunter realises he hasn’t had enough. Hunter’s presence is overwhelming; he has no need for force or threats. His eyes and his voice are weapons all on their own.

“Up close, I realized he was one of the most handsome men I’d ever met….I never would have expected him to look twice at me…” – Evie

Once their journey continued this man changed, perhaps he relaxed, perhaps his true side began to filter through, perhaps he realised?! I saw a different side to him, the complete and utter mind fuck began as he started showing what was underneath that violent, dominating and vile behaviour and my head started arguing with my heart for the rest of the story. Can Hunter persuade the reader that despite his and Evie’s beginning we loved their ending?

“You make it bearable..” Hunter

Jenny:  Hunter appears in the story in such a sinister way.  Your heart is in your mouth at the anticipation of their meeting. The scene where Hunter enters Evie’s life was harrowing to say the least.  This carnal, primal and imposing man with demons of his own saw something in Evie that he needed. Something he desired and wanted and he just took.  Without pause, without thought.  I was prepared to hate Hunter with every fibre of my being.  I wanted to hate him so bad, but I couldn’t. I saw something in him, some light that would spark every now and then that made me yearn for Hunter in a way that I felt he needed protecting.  How could I feel this way about this man who switched between cruelty and kindness at the flick of a switch?

“But in another way he wasn’t broken. He lived, he felt, he suffered like any person”

Gitte: So Jenny, this is the kind of story I love to read; where every single one of my emotions play a part; where I am challenged to question my rationale and my perception of what is right and wrong. Where the scenery surrounding the characters is so vivid and beautiful that it highlights the ‘ugly’. Where I get so swept away by exceptional writing that I understand what perhaps I would not under different circumstances. If a person is so severely broken and lost does he or she inevitably recognise that in another and can you then only heal when brought together? Do two wrongs make a right?

“Why did you take me? When will you let me go? How could you do this to me when I had finally broken free?”Evie

Jenny:  You’re spot on Gitte. This story challenged me, absolutely and it’s such a unique experience when this happens.  I love it when I question my own sanity over my feelings for a book and its characters and Hunter most definitely did that to me.  This man. This tormentor  How could I possibly have any sort of compassion for this man?  The fact that I did is absolute kudos to the clever writing in this story.  Hunter had me completely and utterly had me transfixed throughout this heartbreaking and gritty tale.  Do two wrongs make a right? Can two broken souls make one complete soul?  I don’t know the answer to that but I do know that this book took me out of my comfort zone, provided me with an amazing read and had me devouring every word.
