THE NIGHT MARK by TIFFANY REISZ :: REVIEW

TBB 5 Star Read
Standalone epic and beautiful time travel love story.

SYNOPSIS

She has nothing to live for in the present, but finds there’s something worth dying for in the past…

Faye Barlow is drowning. After the death of her beloved husband, Will, she cannot escape her grief and most days can barely get out of bed. But when she’s offered a job photographing South Carolina’s storied coast, she accepts. Photography, after all, is the only passion she has left.

In the quaint beach town, Faye falls in love again when she sees the crumbling yet beautiful Bride Island lighthouse and becomes obsessed with the legend surrounding The Lady of the Light—the keeper’s daughter who died in a mysterious drowning in 1921. Like a moth to a flame, Faye is drawn to the lighthouse for reasons she can’t explain. While visiting it one night, she is struck by a rogue wave and a force impossible to resist drags Faye into the past—and into a love story that is not her own.

Fate is changeable. Broken hearts can mend. But can she love two men separated by a lifetime?

“I will love you and take care of you for the rest of your life.”
“Don’t you mean your life?”
“I meant what I said.”

The Night Mark was an exquisitely beautiful, magical and hypnotic story, and its one we willingly gave ourselves over to. We were intrigued by the mysterious shadow that surrounded the story, captivated by the inhabitants of Bride Island, past and present, and completely swept away by the romance of the story. Love doesn’t beat to the tick of a clock and time has no place when true love takes residence in the heart as we experienced in this a beautiful and sweeping love story that transcended life, death and time.

“Nothing in the world more foolish than dying when a girl like you is in love with him.”

We do enjoy a good bit of mystery with an otherworldly feel, when it’s combined with a heartfelt time travel romance brought to life by this incredible author, it’s bound to be a winner and The Night Mark certainly was that. As tears were shed, we were again reminded why we hold Tiffany Reisz in such high esteem and why we regard her as the consummate storyteller. They say the devil is in the detail and Tiffany Reisz instinctively and cleverly knows how to really transport the reader into her story, so we become a part of the characters journey. From her complex characters, to her wonderful use of analogies and her beautiful descriptive words, nothing is superfluous; every word she writes beguiles the reader.

“Hope is something God gives us. Hope is…….Hope is a bright light on a dark night. If your hope is guiding you into this shore, then this is where you should drop your anchor.”

The Night Mark is set in 2015 and 1921, with the first part story providing a delicious slow build, allowing for wonderful in depth character development, ensuring we became truly connected with each and every person and their increasing significance to the story that was unfolding.

Drowning in grief after the loss of the love of her life four years earlier, and in a current loveless marriage, Faye accepts an assignment to photograph and chronicle the history for the Lowcountry Preservation Society’s annual calendar, entitled “Journey through Time”. Stuck in limbo, unable to move on from her grief, this assignment provides Faye with an escape she is looking for from her current husband, and, as it turns out, she receives so much more.  What Faye encountered had us believing in fate, miracles, love and second chances.

“To think I spent my whole life believing time only went in one direction…Thought it was a river. Turns out it’s an ocean. Waves come in. Waves go out. Sometimes those waves take us with them.”

The Night Mark delivered the emotion, the passion, the suspense and that precision timed wit we so love from Tiffany Reisz, and again, we found ourselves admiring and loving another one of her heroines. Faye was bold, strong, beautiful and intelligent yet she possessed a softness and vulnerability that made her so easily relatable.

“Once someone loves you that much, loves you more than you deserve, you can’t go back to being loved the normal way.”

The Night Mark was an epic, fascinating and richly detailed love story that was as hauntingly beautiful as it was incredibly romantic. As witty as it was heartbreaking, and delivered with a seamless fluidity and dramatic effect that had us physically clutching our hearts as they raced, broke and soared. Tiffany Reisz wove her way in to our imagination, and let it fly with an entrancing, enthralling and emotionally charged love story that will no doubt be at the of our top favourite reads list for 2017.

“You can’t fight time. And you shouldn’t even if you could. That is a losing battle.”

A sweeping and addictive story of betrayal, revenge and greed

‘Perfection was for heaven, and when you tried to bring perfection to earth, you paid a heavy price. A perfect face withered with age. A perfect love died from neglect. Bourbon was a perfect spirit, which was why the angels took so much of it while it aged.’

the bourbon thiefSYNOPSIS

When Cooper McQueen wakes up from a night with a beautiful stranger, it’s to discover he’s been robbed. The only item stolen—a million-dollar bottle of bourbon. The thief, a mysterious woman named Paris, claims the bottle is rightfully hers. After all, the label itself says it’s property of the Maddox family who owned and operated Red Thread Bourbon distillery since the last days of the Civil War until the company went out of business for reasons no one knows… No one except Paris.

In the small hours of a Louisville morning, Paris unspools the lurid tale of Tamara Maddox, heiress to the distillery that became an empire. But the family tree is rooted in tainted soil and has borne rotten fruit. Theirs is a legacy of wealth and power, but also of lies, secrets and sins of omission. ‘Perfection was for heaven, and when you tried to bring perfection to earth, you paid a heavy price. A perfect face withered with age. A perfect love died from neglect. Bourbon was a perfect spirit, which was why the angels took so much of it while it aged.’

What a story! What a deliciously intoxicating, riveting, breathtaking and intriguing story of revenge, greed, betrayal, lies, lust and secrets. A sweeping saga that felt so decadent, so enthralling we couldn’t pause for a minute, hanging on Paris’s every word right along with Cooper McQueen engulfed in this tale of opulence and tradition right until the very end.

Not once did we feel as though we were spectators in this story. We were there….perched forward, waiting for more, urging Paris on, desperately wanting to hear her recount the story relating to a bottle of Bourbon that held more history, pain and heartache than one small bottle should.

‘Daddy liked to say the Devil owed him a debt and Momma was how Satan paid him back.’

Tiffany Reisz is an awe inspiring author of that there is no doubt. Her exceptionally vivid prose and her impeccable use of metaphors ensured we felt every emotion, lived every painful moment as this story unfolded. Her words as smooth as the expensive bourbon of which she writes flowed effortlessly over the page.  She is the Monet of the written word; so evocative, realistic, picturesque and beautiful was her prose. Not a supplementary word was written in this magnificent story.

“I didn’t know who I was before you. I don’t know who I would be after. But while I was with you, I knew myself.”

It all starts with a meeting between the mysterious Paris and Bourbon Baron Cooper McQueen which sees a moment of passion ensue at Coopers sweeping mansion. It soon takes on something much more when Paris is caught stealing a rare bottle of Red Thread Bourbon from Coopers private collection worth over a million dollars. But why did she steal it? That’s the million dollar question!

“Are you scared?”
“Scared? Scared of you?”
“Of what I’m telling you? Are you scared of this story?”

Instead of turning her over to the police, Paris tells Cooper why she stole the Bourbon, the history of the bourbon and the Maddox Family saga behind the Red Thread distillery, a history spanning 150 years and WHAT A STORY IT IS! So many twists, turns, lies and deceit lined the halls of Arden house, the family home of the Maddox’s, with moments that left us completely open mouthed with shock. Oh yeah, there were some things we did not see coming!

“We tell ourselves lies to survive when we know the truth will kill us.”
“It didn’t kill you.”
“Not yet.”

Paris begins to tell the love story between the 16 year old Tamara Maddox and 28 year old stable hand, Levi Shelby who is of mixed race and who Tamara is very smitten with. What unfolds is a heartbreaking, pulsating and gripping tale with every emotion being elicited from us.

‘The one-drop rule had never made any sense to him. If one drop of black blood made you black, why didn’t one drop of white blood make you white? And hadn’t anyone noticed yet that everybody’s blood was red?’

We lived and breathed this story and we’re loathed to divulge any more than we have already done because you need to learn the secrets as they unfold in order to experience every revelation as it comes to light, to do otherwise would be a travesty to this authors words.

“Fate is just another name for a train that cannot stop until it reaches its final destination.”

We could feel the golden bourbon slipping down our throats, smell its sweetness, feel the tangible humidity in the air, and breathe in the atmospheric beauty Tiffany Reisz created, becoming swept up in an exquisite family legend that left us mesmerized and riveted to the spot. An absolute hands down 5 star indulgent and captivating read!

“A family with bourbon in its blood and blood on its hands.”

“I don’t know where to start.”

The Original Sinners series will always own a huge part of my heart. The story, the characters and the Author, Tiffany Reisz herself. So any additional time spent with Søren and Nora is a bonus. The Confessions is not a full-length novel and contains entire series spoilers. Please read the full series before reading this one.

“It hurts when we realize we can’t give everything to the person we love, that we can’t be everything to the person we love.”

The Original Sinners series is one of the most well-written, addictive, passionate, sarcastically funny and emotionally harrowing series I’ve ever read. Tiffany Reisz takes your heart, soul and mind along a journey of broken and beat up hearts. Love and its accompanying madness. Unlikely friendships, honest, pure and beautiful love. Obligations and religion. All in her very own unique, intelligent and alluring prose. If you bottled up all the tears I’ve cried from both sorrow and laughter, well it would be overwhelming to say the least.

“You were born to be a priest. It’s who you are and what you are and you will never be at peace if you leave the church. It would be like cutting the wings off an angel.”

The Confessions take place during two  – somewhat – life-changing chapters in the Original Sinners series through baring of souls and thoughts. Marcus Stearn and Eleanor Schreiber each take a turn and it was truly an honour and very insightful to be with Søren at this pivotal point of what was the beginning of something extraordinary. No one will ever measure up to Søren the priest nor Søren the man. Every word gripped me during the sparring between Father Ballard and Søren as the serious and thoughtful was entwined with dry humorous banter. A perfection which felt momentous, very personal as well as vulnerable.

Being with Nora and the circumstances surrounding her confession was quite an experience too as it centred round a time where I felt her doubt, pain and love from within, yet it was delivered in her usual sharp sense of humour and irrevocable defence. This Confession being with the much older Father Ballard, who’d heard much about her but never met her before.  I adored and loved Father Ballard in this. Cheeky and wise – what a character!

I inhaled every single word as if it was my next breath. The Confessions is not a long read so I went back immediately and re-read it to savour what I’d only just read. I will never be able to express how much this series means to me and with this, well it was just perfection. I have to say that I hope we get more no matter how long or short as I know for a fact I will never have enough. Read on for “The Confession of Tiffany Reisz.”

“There’s a spirit in her, something that keeps her aloft, high above everything that would bring her crashing to earth….She is the freest person I’ve ever known.”

The time has finally come to keep their promises.

After her first taste of power as a Dominant, Eleanor buries her old submissive self and transforms into Mistress Nora, the Red Queen. With the help of a mysterious young man with a job even more illicit than her own, Nora squares off against a cunning rival in her quest to become the most respected, the most feared Dominatrix in the Underground.

The stars in the skies are not enough for this book and series!

‘The world didn’t often reward those who loved outside the lines.’

I want to reach into my chest and rip out the overwhelmed and beating part of my heart that belongs to Søren, Nora and Kingsley. Then I want to fly thousands of miles and personally show it and hand it over to Tiffany Reisz on bended knees for her to understand just how much I truly feel. What an incredible series – what a passionate journey it’s been.

“I need all of you. Your heart, your soul, your strength, your guts. All of you.”

I wish I’d kept my tears in jars from the first one shed to the last – a sobering realisation of how the written word truly affects the mind, soul and heart. The words making small continuous incisions – making me bleed – making me cry. I don’t know if this was the intention but I can only speak for myself and my exhausted yet devastatingly fulfilled heart.

‘When witnessing a miracle, one should never hurry it along, for it’ll be gone all too soon and who knows when one will see another miracle in one’s lifetime?’

And that readers – is how I feel about this series! I’ve never taken so long to read a book before as I did with The Queen. Knowing this is the end frightened me as well as made me incredibly emotional – consequently – I needed to take several pauses; not wanting to rush nor wanting it to end. However C’est la fin  –  Så er enden nået.

‘Forever and Everything’

Every time I log on to write a review for a book in this series, I struggle. It’s never been an easy feat to do this series any justice nor adequately convey how intense my emotions run whilst reading about my favourite people in the world.  It is what it is – simply put – my favourite series written by an astoundingly brilliant and intelligent Author.

‘Søren was a man of quiet depth, as if he kept a secret second heart locked away in a glass case. It would explain how much he felt and how strongly and yet how rarely such feelings were allowed to escape captivity. ‘

The ranges of emotions run wild in every which direction the characters demand of me – every single time – without fail. My heart has been wholly involved in this journey from the beginning – a journey which must be followed meticulously in the order as intended by its Author.

“I’ll come home, I promise.”

“Please…You take my heart with you.”

“Little One, you are my heart.”

The Queen is yet another master piece where puzzle pieces are revealed with the usual intelligence, wit, sarcasm and passion as its predecessors.  These pieces are then nudged into position through evocative and powerful writing making the overall picture complete with the final piece – ultimately rendering me speechless and breathless at its all-encompassing beauty. It’s stunning. It’s commanding. It’s exquisitely haunting. It’s perfection. This series is a masterpiece.

“How much pain do you want?”

“Hurt me until I forget how much I hurt.”

“A person’s heart is a maze. When you’re in the maze, you can’t see your way to the center of it. Only if you’re above the maze can you look down and really see what’s happening.”

Tiffany Reisz never fails to embrace me and involve every single one of my senses and emotions. The pedestal upon which she stands is so high in my eyes that I can never envision that not being the case. She has a magic touch and an unrivalled way with words that astounds and leaves an instant lasting impression. This series through The Original Sinners and The White Years have captivated and induced so many tears – an insistent racing pulse and so much laughter that thinking about it makes me want to experience it all over again, if I could. Now, I eagerly await The Queen!

“I used to think you walked on water,” Kingsley said, meeting Søren’s eyes. “Now I know you’re drowning like the rest of us.”

The Virgin begins and ends on the night before a wedding. But, just whose wedding is it? I have to say that although highly intrigued I was soon caught up in a night of heartfelt reminiscing in the company of Nora, Kingsley and Søren. The details of ‘the missing year’ coming into light out of a harrowing darkness.

“You can look at someone and think you know everything about them…but you don’t. We all have masks on. Or veils.”

As is always the case, it was told with a fervent intensity that had me reaching for tissues one moment – laughing through tears the next. It was equally devastating as it was hopeful and life changing for the formidable three – Nora, Kingsley and Søren. The intricacies of the push and pull; the intense heights of wants and needs. The astounding depth and growth. It was all perfectly flawless in typical Tiffany Reisz fashion.

“Do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself.“  – Søren

I devoured The Virgin as expected … HA! And the eroticism was as per usual timed to perfection and written in such a vivid and powerfully poignant way, I found myself very hot under the collar, pun intended.

“She’s mine,” Søren said. “Nothing else matters but that. She is mine. The end.”

Nora and Kingsley respectively tell of two very honest and haunting memories on this important night and I inhaled every word as Tiffany Reisz made me a part of these reflections. I was there with them. I have to say that Kingsley’s year had me on my knees at times – this cocky arrogant King let me see a side of him I’ll always treasure. If at all possible; I fell even more in love with this formidable Frenchman.

That’s not to say Nora’s wasn’t wholeheartedly sincere and heart-rending also. However, I do feel hers was overall more of an internal journey of self-reflection and discovery. She found a part of herself that’d been lying dormant whilst healing old wounds. Her year was mind-blowing at times.

“Are you mine?” he asked her.

“I am yours. Forever.”

And she was hers. But she was his too, and she always would be.

The Virgin is another breathtaking book from an incredibly talented Author. The way the lives and inner most thoughts; love – romance and kink is tied together so intricately through the beating of three incredibly special hearts is overwhelmingly addictive. Possessive obsessiveness sprinkled with erotica, humour, and the fundamentals of religion written with intelligence and sarcastic wit and such depth. There’s nothing else remotely like it out there and I URGE readers to start at the beginning and pick up Tiffany Reisz. I can wax lyrical till the cows come home!

“If you saw the crowd I used to run with…let’s just say we put the original in original sin.”
