THE CAD and the CO-ED (Rugby Series #3) by L.H. COSWAY & PENNY REID :: REVIEW

Standalone romantic comedy with a sports theme

SYNOPSIS

Keeping a secret this big is going to take lots of balls. Specifically, rugby balls.

THE CAD
Bryan Leech is a cad.
Or, he *was* a cad.
No one is quite certain.
Once the quintessential playboy, Bryan claims he’s done with wild parties and weekend benders. No more one night stands leading to mornings he can’t remember; no more binges and blackouts; no more exploits plastered all over the tabloids and rag sheets. According to Bryan, he’s cleaning up his act.
The only problem is, no one believes him.

THE CO-ED
Eilish Cassidy never thought she’d be a mother at nineteen or still in college at twenty-four. Cut off from every member of her family except her favorite cousin, she’s finally managed to put her life back together. Stronger and wiser, Eilish enters her last semester of university determined to stand on her own. Now she just needs to find an internship.
The only problem is, her best option—by far—places her directly in the path of her son’s father, and he doesn’t remember her at all.

THE PLAN
Bryan is determined to prove he’s changed. Eager to settle down with the right woman, he’s got his sights set on the gorgeous redhead who seems terribly familiar.
Eilish is determined to hide her secret. She’ll do anything to keep her child safe, even if that means ignoring her own wishes and desires.
But what happens when Bryan starts to remember? And what will it take for Bryan to convince the girl he forgot that she’s unforgettable?

‘She didn’t deserve to be forgotten. She deserved to be treasured.’

To be honest, the whole ‘secret baby, don’t tell the father’ trope in romance isn’t one of our favourites. More times than not we don’t feel the reasoning for denying the father knowledge of his child to be justified, leading us to become frustrated with the heroine and siding with the clueless Dad in the scenario.

But… we have a deep affection for this series and adore the collaboration of L.H. Cosway and Penny Reid, so it’s testament to their talent that we dove in despite our hesitancy over the theme of the story. After all, we had heard about Bryan’s carousing, heavy drinking playboy ways previously and were keen to hear his story, to see what lay beneath this wayward man and witness him find love….twice!

“I’m attracted to you on every level. I want you, Eilish. I want you with every breath I take.”

In this instance, we felt Eilish’s reasons for keeping little Patrick a secret from Bryan to be completely justified. After all, Bryan had no recollection of sleeping with her, not even remembering her name after losing huge chunks of his memory due to his over indulgent haze around the time of their one night stand.  It was a night of passion that had Eilish believing she had found ‘the one’ after hero worshipping Bryan for years. For Bryan, however, that night was another in a long line of forgettable conquests thanks to Mr Smirnoff.

“She has more unresolved feelings for you than Perrie Edwards has for Zayn Malik.” (Sean)
I stared at him for several seconds, dumfounded. “Who?”
He threw his hands up in the air. “See. This is half the problem. I should’ve used Jenn and Brad as an example instead. You’re completely out of touch, Bryan. Can you even remember how to seduce a woman?”

After hooking up with Bryan at Ronan and Annie’s wedding and leaving his hotel room humiliated and hurt, three months later, Eilish discovers she’s pregnant with Bryan’s baby. Fast forward five years and Eilish is back in Ireland at the request of her cousin Sean, who she has a really close bond with. He arranges a job for her as the Rugby Team’s Physio which brings her face to face with her nemesis, Bryan.

‘I was the villain of the piece, and we both know it.’

Both Bryan and Eilish are riddled with insecurities and trust issues, can they move on from their past and start afresh? We were completely swept away by the sweet and tender build in the relationship between little Patrick and Bryan and the witty banter between Bryan and Sean. Both big winners for us.

The dream team once again weaved their magic by delivering a story chock full of love, warmth, humour, emotion and loveable characters whom we took to our hearts, once again, delivering their story in their own unique quirky way. We love the way these authors deliver such life like characters. We feel their pain, we embrace their love, and we devour the wittiness and emotional connection between them all, feeling we know them personally.

‘Christ, I needed to stop touching her, because if I thought she was beautiful before, the fact that this woman was the mother of my child gave her a fucking halo. I swear, she glowed. She was radiant. As magnetic as before but also something more.’

Can a beautiful little boy melt the heart of a big burly Rugby player? There were certainly some angsty moments between Eilish and Bryan as we hoped and prayed they could make things work.  We fell in love with the protective, forthright and witty Bryan, he certainly had some wooing to do and he wooed us! There were precious, tender and funny moments throughout. We adore this series.

4.5 Fabulous stars!

‘But living in the shadow of someone else was the worst kind of fate. And for my own sanity, I put an end to it.’

We were in the mood for a sports romance and they don’t come much better than For Finlay. This felt like a classic old school NA romance with a well written football theme. J Nathan is a new to us Author and we fell in love with her story and characters. A fabulous frenemies to lovers’ story that’ll burrow deep in your heart. Whilst incredibly sad at times it’s also very sweet, passionate and funny.

“Never be afraid to tell people what you’re really thinking. It’s one of the most refreshing things about you.”

After a bit of a slow start we became hooked and this story captivated us as we went on a journey of high emotions, heartfelt angst as well as the tragedy of loss and self-discoveries. Do we live our lives for ourselves or others? Do we let the consequences of our past impact our future?

“He judged me before hearing the truth.”

For Finlay is a story a girl, Finlay, who suffers the dreadful loss of her twin brother during a time when their relationship is strained and fractious. The guilt is all encompassing and she’s living a life of regret, loneliness and trying to -in her own way- fulfil her dead brother’s dreams. Finlay is, despite what she thinks, quite the feisty independent girl with a quiet unassuming strength.

‘He made me feel things I’d never felt before. Things I wasn’t sure I’d feel again. But that’s why it was so scary.’

Caden is the all-American hero. The star quarterback who’s immediately drawn to Finlay for unexplainable reasons as she absolutely despises everything about him and makes this known daily. Despite her cold and somewhat hostile treatment of him, he can’t stay away. The chemistry is palpable and he craves her despite her outward hatred towards him. He wants to understand her. He wants her to feel like he feels. He wants her.

“Let me do whatever it takes to make this right.”

The flow of this story felt so natural and believable. We really got to know the characters, their stumbling blocks, insecurities and inner fights. There were times we had tears in our eyes and others were our hearts melted. Such a beautiful story that for some reason sparked a sentimentality in our hearts. A fabulous sports romance that did exactly what it set out to be!

FIFTY SHADES DARKER MOVIE LONDON RED CARPET PREMIERE – OUR MOVIE REVIEW

Our Fifty Shades Movies experience

For us, the Fifty Shades series by E L James is a romance which features a hero who’s suffered so much he’s lost himself and shut down his heart. His heart’s silence a response to the fear of hurt, pain and further breakage. A man who has no idea that he’s merely existing. That is, until he meets Ana, a heroine who is perceived as a vulnerable fragile young woman when, in fact, it is she who displays real strength and conviction over the series. Whilst we fell in love with Ana, we have to admit it was Christian who ultimately stole our hearts. For us to feel this protective of a book character came as a surprise, but nonetheless that is exactly how we feel and always will about Christian Grey. We cried, laughed, swooned and gasped as we lived, breathed and experienced two beautiful characters’ journey of not only finding love but also finding their true selves as they each drew out what was fundamental to their very being. E L James wrote two incredibly special characters, each taking their own personal path in order to heal or grow. Two characters who, unbeknownst to themselves, needed the other. The vivid imagery created through the words of E L James created a series so passionate and unique it can never be forgotten. In fact, it can be re-read and each time it creates that same emotional reaction.

Every book lover approaches a movie based on a beloved book with quiet apprehension wondering if their favourite scene, a specific emotion, a quote or a moment will be brought to life reigniting the feeling or impression felt from the original written word. We all have those moments from this series that stays without ever leaving our hearts, passages we can recite and imaginations personal to us. It’s a tall order to achieve. However, the excitement over this much loved series coming to life on the big screen felt like a dream come true. We counted days and eagerly followed this new journey our much loved characters and much loved Author E L James were taking us on.

In February 2015, we watched Fifty Shades of Grey on premiere night and we fell in love with Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson when they brought Fifty Shades of Grey’s Christian & Ana to life. It was a dream come true for us and we hung on every word, every scene, and every action. Our hearts felt full. As readers our minds automatically filled in the blanks and from our love of the books we revelled in moments of pure enjoyable happiness as the film journey began. As one of the most epic love stories began.

This week we were once more honoured to be invited to the Premiere of Fifty Shades Darker. The build up to the premiere was again an amazing experience and journey to be part of, curtesy of #OfficialFifty whom we have to sincerely thank for everything over the last few years.

Fifty Shades Darker was an incredible experience. We watched it in ecstatic awe, marvelling at how close to the book it turned out to be, this movie in particular was one for the fans and we firmly believe that the readers who love this series will appreciate and love what the men and women behind this movie have achieved. It’s overwhelmingly faithful to the book and without question you feel the chemistry and connection as the actors have grown within their roles and clearly care for one another on and off set. Whilst the first movie was racy the second one was off the charts hot. Jamie Dornan is OUR Christian and we doubt there was a single woman in the cinema who didn’t gasp out loud in the spreader-bar scene. With the flick of a hand Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey left every woman in need of a fan and a cold shower. For us every pivotal scene was captured in a stunning, classy and seductive manner. The horrors of Christians past which carried consequences in his now was emotionally depicted. The beauty tamed her beast and made him realise and accept that he is loved and worthy of it. Oh our hearts. We cried, we laughed and we felt our pulses racing. It was sheer perfection and we applaud the cast and crew. Fifty Shades Darker has every moment we hold so dear from the book.

E L James started a reading revolution which caused people across the world to pick up books once more and connect with other readers; like us. Her love, care and respect for her characters resonated with us; her words shot straight from her heart into ours. Now we are absolutely thrilled to see it come to life and we are enjoying every second of the Fifty Shades movie experience.

They say you will never forget your first; well, for us, this has never been truer than in the case of Fifty Shades.

If you’re yet to see the move, be sure to stay through the credits and prepare for a heart stopping surprise that will leave you in a state of excited anticipation!

Enjoy and let’s excitedly count the days till Fifty Shades Freed!

WAR POPPY by NICOLE LYNNE

Standalone tragic and heartbreaking second chance love story

6th

SYNOPSIS

Poppy
Love and war. Two words that should have little association, but to me the two go hand in hand. Both are a tragedy. They rip you open and spit you out. The war killed my husband, Connor, shattered my will to live, and took my best friend. Brandon may not have physically died in that war, but his soul did. And now we’re left to pick up the wreckage. Expected to move on when all that is left is the ruins of a life we once had.
Brandon
War. It took everything from me, even myself. When you’re only able to exist, death seems like a blessing. Pain…a welcome distraction. I ran from everything associated with my past, and then she found me, fighting, drowning myself in whisky, trying to forget. She reminds me of Connor, of what I’ve lost—what we’ve lost. In the midst of destruction, she’s a salvation I don’t deserve.
I shouldn’t love him.
I shouldn’t love her.
Love is a war we never should have fought.

4 Hearbreaking stars

‘It’s as though he wraps himself around my lonely soul and nurses it back to life with the splintered remnants of his own.’

If you’re looking for a sweet hearts and flowers romance, War Poppy by Nicole Lynne, is anything but. In fact, it’s a tortured, honest, brutal love story which carried a sense of foreboding throughout.  As we read, we had that nervous, gut wrenching feeling of waiting for the other shoe to drop. It was a feeling that felt inevitable rather than probable. Such was the tone of the story.

‘As much as we pretend we aren’t alone, we are never more alone than when we are tripped in our own mind. And Brandon – the place he’s trapped, it’s a place I could never begin to understand.’

The flourishing partnership of Stevie J Cole & L.P. Lovell has shown to be a formidable collaboration, delivering some dark and downright uncomfortably gritty stories, but this time, in War Poppy, they’ve written a story that is tragically heartbreaking and they did it in their own inimitable style.

Connor Blaine, Poppy Turner and Brandon O’Kieffe were the three musketeers growing up.  A trio of misfits that gelled together perfectly. They shared an adventurous childhood, leaning on one another, sharing adolescence and adulthood.  Brandon would be Poppy’s first crush, first kiss, first love, though it would be Connor who would ultimately marry their childhood sweetheart.

War Poppy begins with the loss of Connor during his time in Afghanistan with Brandon. Connor was more than a mate, he was his brother in every sense of the word. Riddled with guilt and despair, Brandon goes AWOL, turning to the bottle and underground boxing bouts in an attempt to exorcise the demons living within. Brandon is only functioning physically following Connor’s tragic death.  Poppy’s re-emergence into Brandon’s life gave us the hope that he can overcome his demons. Is love enough?

‘Two lost souls trying to save each other from unsalvageable events. She may be my hope, but I’m surely her destruction.’

The sense of hopelessness in this story is overwhelming, and we did experience that aspect through Brandon’s character who struck our hearts painfully and deeply. However, we felt we didn’t get to fully experience the level of anguish and sadness we would have expected from this story and feel this stems from being denied the bonding experience of Poppy and Connor’s relationship. This was such an important part of the story, yet we felt we knew very little about the man at the centre of all the pain and whose death was the catalyst for unfolding events. We couldn’t conceive how Poppy came to marry Connor, what their life was like…in fact, we knew nothing of this background, other than the snippets from childhood. Every reader is different and for us, this was something we desperately needed to experience to completely grasp the full extent of Poppy’s devastating grief and her profound love for Brandon.

“Everything in life is a risk, you just have to decide which risks are worth taking, and to me, and you are a risk worth taking because without you, without what we have, I will be existing. And I want to live, Brandon.”

War Poppy is told in dual pov between Poppy and Brandon, as well as flashbacks to their childhood and Brandon’s time at war and we can tell you, being inside Brandon’s head during those times was chaotic and unbearably heartbreaking. Witnessing him trying to claw his way out of the darkness and living those devastating moments with him broke us.

‘I’m left standing in the middle of destruction, staring at the violence that must constantly be swimming inside of his head. And when I’m finally able to draw in a good breath, I collapse to the floor, head in hands wondering when love turned into war.’

It’s clear to see these authors poured their soul into this story and it must have been an agonising love story to bring to fruition, because as a reader it was difficult reading. We applaud their courage in telling this story their way as in doing so they made Brandon and Poppy’s story feel authentic and believable. War Poppy is a gut-wrenching story of friendship, loss, courage, grief and love with the hearts of these two authors clearly visible on every page.  And whilst it most certainly moved us, we just fell short of experiencing the complete decimation of our hearts we had anticipated.

Hosting her brother’s wedding for an MVP guest list is the challenge of Jess Canning’s life. Already the family screw-up, she can’t afford to fail. And nobody (nobody!) can learn of the colossal mistake she made with the best man during a weak moment last spring. It was wrong, and there will not be a repeat. Absolutely not. Even if he is the sexiest thing on two legs.

Blake Riley sees the wedding as fate’s gift to him. Jess is the maid of honor and he’s the best man? Let the games begin. So what if he’s facing a little (fine, a lot) of resistance? He just needs to convince the stubborn blonde that he’s really a good boy with a bad rap. Luckily, every professional hockey player knows that you’ve got to make an effort if you want to score.

But Jess has more pressing issues to deal with than sexy-times with a giant man-child. Such as: Will the ceremony start on time, even though someone got grandma drunk? Does glitter ever belong at a wedding? And is it wrong to murder the best man?

Caution: May cause accidental aspiration of tea or coffee. Do not read in a public place where loud laughter is inappropriate. Contains hot but hilarious hockey players, puppy cuddling and a snarky pair of underwear

4.5 Cheezus Stars

‘I want someone to look at me like they just won the lottery. And I want to feel sure that I have to, too- that I can say “forever” and know I’m making the absolute right decision. I’ve been in love before. A little. But never like that.’

CHEEZUS…we loved this book! You know those stories that have you laughing out loud whilst swooning and loving that typical frustration you feel when you want to knock a few heads together. Well, Good Boy is that book. Not only do we get to properly know the loud and brash Blake from Him & Us, we also get a fabulous catch up with the gorgeous Jamie and Wes curtesy of Jessica, Jamie’s sister.

“That’s Blakey’s best trait, you know. His need to protect. To make everyone happy…”

Let’s start with Blake shall we! This guy had us in stitches with laughter, he’s like a bull in a teashop. Huge hockey dude with an endearing immaturity and juvenile humour which came across as loveable and hilarious rather than crude and annoying. We fell in utter love with this guy, and we have to admit our soft spot for him has gained him entry to an all-time favourite book boyfriend list. Why? Because this man has a heart so big and soft under all that hard and imposing exterior.  He’s so bloody tenacious and a cheeky bugger who just stole our hearts.

‘Blake was onto me, though. And that dude is like a big, drooly dog. Doesn’t matter if he just met you, he wants to lick your face and hump your leg.’

Blake is a blunt flirt who’s set his sights on Jess. It all began with a massage chair one night, a night neither he nor Jess can forget. Frenemies to lovers is a theme we love and it was so well written by these Authors ensuring we inhaled every word watching this push pull romance blossom. It was such a brilliantly funny ride and we loved every minute of it.

“Never meant to do this tonight.” – Jess
“Don’t overthink it.” I tear the packet and roll the rubber onto my aching dick. “You just need a little recharge on my docking station.” – Blake

Where Blake is confident and comfortable in life Jess is the exact opposite. She’s got this heavy weight on her shoulders of not having found her place and trying to live up to this misplaced insecurity that she’s the black sheep in a rather large family of siblings. She feels like a user rather than a contributor. But when she shines, she lights up the world when a nudge in the right direction bolsters a natural ability, showing her understanding and compassion. If only things with a certain hockey rascal was as easy to see as the wood for the trees.

‘I miss you, he writes.’

‘I miss you, too, I admit. But that doesn’t mean we’re dating.’

‘We are though.’

‘Goodnight, Blake.’

‘Good night, girlfriend.’

We loved these characters; their real life struggles and perceived inferiorities. Their story was warm and fuzzy; sweet and sexy; funny and emotional. It was a fabulous romantic comedy that gave us such enjoyment as we read and fell in love.

“You know,” he continues, “when all the babes would throw themselves at me nilly-willy.”
“Willy-nilly,” I correct.
“Huh?”
“It’s willy-nilly. The willy comes first.”
He winks at me. “I’ll let you have this one, but only because you’re right – the willy always does come first.”
