EIGHT (Love by Numbers #6) by E S CARTER :: REVIEW

Standalone in a series, single Dad, second chance at love

SYNOPSIS
I’m sorry for your loss.
Why do people say that?
When someone you love is taken from you, when a part of you dies along with them, you haven’t lost them like you would your car keys or mobile phone. They aren’t stuck down the side of the sofa or left in the ignition of your car for you to find later. You haven’t absentmindedly put them somewhere and forgotten. You will never lose them because they live in you.
The soul crushing hurt that burns your lungs with every breath you take comes from knowing where they are and not being with them.
The ugly and real definition of grief is being left behind.
I’m sorry they left you.
I’m sorry you are alone.
I’m sorry it hurts to breathe.
Loss; it doesn’t even compare.
She was my first love.
She is my last love.
I am an empty husk who pretends to be filled with enough love for those of us she left behind.
Our little girl and newborn son need me.
I am both mother and father now.
I am hollow and empty.
I am a shell.
So why does the girl with the face of an angel and eyes that mirror my emptiness, look at me like I’m her everything?

“You’re not her.”
“No, I’m not her.”

There’s something so special about the Love by Numbers series by E S Carter. Whilst each book focuses primarily on a specific character, it is the extraordinarily beautiful family dynamic, at its core, which also captivates us. This, and the clever way in in which she dangles that little carrot about a ‘secondary‘ character in each book, teasing us into eagerly anticipating her next story as we follow each Fox-Williams man in his quest for love throughout Love by Numbers. We’ve followed Josh Fox-Williams through each book and after the unfolding events in One (Book #5), we knew Josh’s story was going to crush our hearts and so we had tissues at the ready and we’re glad we did, boy did we need them!

“We love you, Josh. We will take all your ugly and your pain and not judge you for any of it. We will not tell you your anger is unwarranted. We will not demand you to let it go. There is no cure for grief.”

In One, we glimpsed the heartbreaking moment Josh’s world came crumbling down around him, when Laura passed away, leaving behind a devastated husband, a bewildered sweet little girl, Ivy and a newborn baby boy, for Josh to nurture and tend to, whilst drowning in his own grief.

‘This house is saturated with her. She is everywhere, and yet, she is nowhere. Every morning when I wake up, she dies again.’

Whilst the Fox-Williams boys were all sporty and liked to put it about in their youth, Josh was the level headed slightly nerdy primary school teacher who married his first and only love, his high school sweetheart, Laura Miles. Josh was a deliriously happy husband, father and son and in Eight, that all comes crashing down as the reality and depth of his loss hits home. Josh’s grief was a tangible, living thing. It was bloody gut wrenching, leaving us a sobbing mess from the start. To witness this beautiful man grappling with his overwhelming grief and responsibilities was gut wrenching.

After shutting himself off emotionally, and allowing his brother Isaac to step up to the plate by taking on the responsibility of caring for Josh’s adorable children, while he sank further and further into despair, Josh one day realises he needs to make changes to bring himself back from the brink and decides to move to Ibiza, escaping to Nate’s (his brothers) villa with his children for a while to regroup.

“Life is complicated, ugly and often messy, but it’s also beautiful too.”

It is there he meets 25 year old Halle Richards,  a soulful, sweet and beautiful woman who is dealing with her own issues and whom Josh is initially quite hostile towards, but is attracted to nonetheless. Their relationship begins with a burning passionate night, to purely satisfy their base needs, yet buids to an emotional relationship between the two.

E S Carter stripped Josh’s emotions raw, revealing the anger, despair, conflict, turmoil, hate, sadness and confusion Josh was feeling. Every emotion was felt, every tear we could shed was shed. We felt Josh’s loss and love for Laura with every beat of our heart and because of this, we did find the relationship between Halle and Josh played out a little fast once it came to fruition, and would have preferred it to have been a more slow build and in the moment, considering the issues they were both dealing with.

“You deserve more. More than a broken man who is in love with a ghost.”

However, that being said, it did not detract at all from the intense emotional pull of this story, which was sweetly peppered with tender, funny moments courtesy of two absolutely gorgeously sweet children. If you adore books with children, you will fall head over heels in love with Eight. Little Ivy and baby Arthur (or Arrfffuur as Ivy calls him) are two of the sweetest, heart stealing little children you could imagine with E S Carter capturing their personalities beautifully. Passionate, poignant and real, Josh’s story will break you and heal you, and make you believe in second chances and love. Another fabulous book in this wonderful series! E S Carter, you’ve done it again!

Standalone friends to lovers, second chance romance

SYNOPSIS

3 weeks. 5 cities. 15 impossible stunts. One reality show.

Trevor Cross came into Reya Cabrera’s world with a bang and faded out with a whimper. They vowed to make it work, but life had other plans. After chasing his TV dreams for years, Trev finally became the UK’s next big reality star, but he alienated his family and friends in the process. Now he finally has everything he ever wanted. Women. Money. Fame. But none of it means anything when he doesn’t have the one thing that matters most: love.

Money leaves a gaping hole. Fame surrounds him with loneliness. And no woman makes him feel like Reya used to before the whirlwind of success pulled them apart.

He has a plan to get her back. However, with a hectic filming schedule looming, the only way to do that is to convince her to come on the road with him. Reya has been stuck in a rut for a while, and the opportunity to travel across Europe and play her music for new audiences seems like heaven. The only catch? She has to do it with the one boy who ever got close enough to break her heart. But he’s not a boy anymore, and as she gets to know him again she can’t deny her respect for the man he’s become.

Every time she’s around him her heart feels full of air, like a balloon about to pop. Little does she know, Trev’s feelings are just as tumultuous as hers. One thing’s for sure, these three weeks on the road together will either make them whole again or break them irrevocably.

“We’re making memories tonight, Reya Cabrera, isn’t it exciting?”

It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since we first fell in love with this series, and still, our hearts beat with excited anticipation with each new release. We’ve absolutely loved meeting new characters along the way, becoming completely enamoured with every one of them, experiencing their stories that always find that special place in our hearts.

In Hearts On Air, L.H. Cosway again delivers a story delivered with heart, together with the witty and engaging dialogue this author is known and loved for. And again, she’s had us delighting over a mischievous, cheeky hero with that little boy charm she does so brilliantly. Though, Trevor did test our resolve once or twice!

“No one’s ever told you to act right because they’re too dazzled by how good-looking you are. They’re too busy feeling blessed that you deign to grace them with your presence. “

Trevor and Reya’s story is a friends to lovers, second chance romance that had its ups and downs and follows two years on from the free prequel Novella, One Epic Night.  We fill in the gaps from Trevor and Reya’s intense night, and even more intense feelings, as their relationship shifted from friends to lovers’ status, leaving us hanging for the conclusion to those unfolding events.

Now, two years later Trevor is committed to righting his wrongs, and by hook or by crook, he plans to once again win the trust and heart of Reya Cabrera. But can he make her forget the hurt and win her over? Time will tell!

“Because you’re the best friend I ever had, and losing you is my biggest regret, the worst thing that ever happened to me.”

Told from Reya’s POV we learn Reya also has issues from her past that haunt her, to which Trevor isn’t a party to. Trevor too is dealing with a disorder he needs to keep in check.

We loved the start of Hearts on Air and the last part of the story won us over completely. We did struggle a little with the pacing of the middle which at times felt a little repetitive and tended to drag somewhat as Trevor and Reya attempt to rebuild their friendship and relationship.

“No, I know you care about me. You just don’t care enough. I’m not asking for the world, Trev. I’m not asking for much at all.”

In saying that, there was much we loved about this story, most of all the unique and beautiful voice of L.H. Cosway, trusting her to bring it home and boy…she certainly did that.

There was an element in this story that had our hearts positively soaring and tears streaming down our faces as we once again caught up with the characters we’ve loved implicitly. In fact, it had us wanting to go back and re-read some of them to once again experience those tangible emotions we remember all too well.

L.H. Cosway is an absolute gem of a storyteller. There is a warmth and humour to her stories that ensures we will keep coming back time and time again. Her ability to bring such realness to her characters, as though we know them personally, is something we particularly enjoy. Whilst we’re sad to be saying goodbye to this series, we’ll be waiting with baited breath and anticipated hearts for her next fabulous story and some brand new characters to fall in love with!

“We spend so much time striving for status that we don’t realise it’s the people in our lives that bring us real happiness.”

SNEAK PEEK AT HEARTS ON AIR

The train started to move and a fizzle of excitement ran through me. This was it. We were on our way. I hadn’t travelled much in my life, just back and forth to Spain a few times when I was a kid to visit family. My parents emigrated from Madrid when they were in their late teens to make a life for themselves in London. I was looking forward to visiting Barcelona because I’d never been there, but Madrid not so much. There were too many memories there, and memories made me hear my mother’s voice in my head.

¿Por qué nunca dices la verdad? Estás tratando de arruinarnos con tus mentiras.

Why do you never tell the truth? You are trying to ruin us with your lies.

My thoughts had me feeling unsteady. Trev’s breathing deepened and I suspected he’d nodded off. I pulled my notebook from my small handbag and began to write.

Close your eyes and pick a word.

Describe the person you see in your head.

Not the one in theirs.

Take your time.

Take your time.

Tómate tu tiempo

Don’t be scared. Don’t overthink.

Strong, good.

Proud, better.

Flawed, yes.

Truthful, always.

We are all a work in the making.

Even when we end we are unfinished we’re never really finished.

I was scribbling for a couple more minutes when Trev’s voice startled me. “Can I see?”

I froze, goosebumps claiming my skin, then turned to him. “You know I don’t like that.”

“But I’m gonna hear you sing them eventually. Why can’t I read the lyrics?”

I worried my lip, thinking on it as I shut my notebook. “Because words without music are far too revealing. The music massages their starkness. Most people are too busy listening to the melody to realise you’re baring your soul.”

Trev stared at me for a long, long moment. “So, if I read your lyrics it’s like discovering a secret, but if I watch you play I’m too dazzled by the music to hear the truth?”

I shrugged and looked away, feeling self-conscious now. “Something like that.”

“It’s not just the music that dazzles people, you know. It’s you.”

I glanced back at him and he reached out to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear. I inhaled and shifted away slightly. “What do you mean?”

“I was always fascinated when I watched you perform,” he confessed and my breath caught. “You’d start out all prim and proper, so dignified in those long, flowy dresses you wear on stage, your back straight, chest forward. Then you’d start to play and you’d slowly unravel. By the end of one song your hair would fall from its clip, by then end of the next, the straps of your dress would be loose at your shoulders. You were so real. You fucking slayed me. You mesmerised everyone and that’s because you were so unaware.”

I had no words, no idea how to respond. I never expected him to say something like that, not with the low rumble of the engine and the chatter of other passengers surrounding us.

“Are you trying to butter me up? Am I going to be sleeping in the broom closet instead of sharing with Leanne when we arrive in Brussels?” I asked, needing to break the intensity of the moment, the honesty of it. He was making me feel too many things.

He smiled, seeming to guess I was embarrassed, and shot back, “Nah, but I might need you to wash my underwear as part of your PA duties.”

I cocked a brow. “Only your underwear? How very specific.”

“I’ll get Neil to do my clothes, but I thought I’d save the honour of my dirty jocks for you,” he said and winked.

“Delightful,” I chuckled.

“How about this, if you do mine I’ll do yours.”

“Oh, romantic.”

“Only for you, Reyrey,” he said, using my old pet name. It was the first time he’d used it in over two years and I felt . . . conflicted. Although, it was going to happen eventually the more time we spent together.

king of hearts 3

KING OF HEARTS BOOK THREE

Welcome to the City, London’s most prestigious square mile, where finance reigns and Oliver King is a rising prince.
I used to rule the world.

There might be wolves on Wall Street, but there were crocodiles in Canary Wharf. Some of us craved money. Some of us craved power.
I liked money, and power had its advantages, but what I really wanted was to excel, to surpass the men who came before me. I never cared much for love and romance until I met Alexis.
I could feel it the very moment she walked into the interview, with her outspoken charm and vivacious personality. She cast all the others in shadow, made me laugh when life held no humour. Our friendship should have remained professional, but it wasn’t long before the lines started to blur.
You know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men? Well, I never foresaw where my plans would lead, and only in my darkest hour did I finally see the light…
You can have all the money and prestige in the world and still be the poorest man alive. And love, well, I hate to use a tired old cliché, but love can be the thing that truly sets you free.

In this place, we find two hearts who should be foes
And yet, amidst the turmoil their love still grows
Misadventure abounds and the divide will bring them strife
But with luck, death doesn’t always mean an end to life.

“Have you ever kissed a stranger in the rain?”

And this book is why Emma Scott has become one of our favourite Authors because wow….just wow. We’ve loved everything this Author has written, she’s made us cry ugly tears whilst making our hearts soar at the same time. Her writing is astonishing with every word and every sentence adding up into a vivid beautiful passionate masterpiece. Her characters just feel so complete and steal our hearts every single time. Without question, Emma Scott’s stories are quite simply stunning.

‘I held her the way you hold something you know isn’t yours to keep.’

We loved the mystery, the melancholy, the hopeful and the broken which made up for one emotionally addictive read. Two people merely existing rather than living, both with an ultimate goal to escape and to see the vibrant light instead of the weighty dark. Both burdened by heart-breaking memories; craving sunshine and a freedom free of accusations and reproach.

‘I didn’t want to die but this wasn’t living. I wanted an end.’

Emma Scott writes such multifaceted characters that literally come to life breathing passions and love into the pages. The air flowing through the words written as they come to life on every exhale. Quite simply put, we fell in complete love with both Fiona and Nikolai embracing them with our hearts as we followed them on a journey that was shrouded in darkness with bursts of vibrant colour.

“I want to walk in the sunshine with you.”

Fiona is living day to day in hiding with the ultimate hope of escaping to another place where she can just simply be. A harrowing past lurking like a dark shadow waiting to engulf her once more. Cutting a lonely figure until the night bravery embraces her and she meets a mysterious tattooed and pierced stranger. For one night only.  Nikolai is on the search for peace and solitude yet with the intrinsic craving of a soft touch and a healing love that quiets the raging storms of others’ emotions and pasts inflicting a myriad of impressions on him.

‘The inexplicable calm of being in her presence hadn’t been an illusion.’

As we read we went through every single emotion possible whilst gasping, crying, laughing and feeling overwhelmed at the love and passion. Our hearts were involved every step of Fiona and Nikolai’s sometimes harrowing journey and we cannot begin to adequately express how much we loved them and their story. With our hearts we urge you to read this Author and her words.

That’s what he is…Soft and hard, sweet and rough…I’d never kissed a man like this. I knew I never would again.’

“Cricket is all I have. It’s all I’ve ever had.”

We love our sports romances and have read copious amounts, but we have to admit this was our first cricket romance. Having very limited knowledge of cricket as it’s just not a sport we follow, we were excited to see how we’d enjoy a romance set in the cricket world. We already knew we loved Anna Bloom’s writing as we’ve read her before and we were definitely in the mood for a bit of British. Did we enjoy it? We sure did, it’s a good slow burn romance with an epilogue that melted our hearts.

“Life.” And there it was, the one thing I never knew I wanted. A life of my own.

Once again we fell in love with the way Anna Bloom writes, it’s flawless, engaging, funny and has such realism. You feel like you get to know the characters and get completely immersed in the story of cricket. The Game had a real authenticity to it and it’s very clear that cricket is a sport Anna Bloom knows like the back of her hand. We do have to add though that for us we did struggle with the heavy focus on cricket in relation to the romance aspect. Whilst we love that the sport featured in great detail we would have liked the same for Alyssa and Jase in order to fully emotionally connect to this romance.

“This will be worth it?”
“It’s cricket. It’s always worth it.”

Alyssa is the queen of women’s cricket but is now the head fitness coach of a T20 cricket team after suffering an injury as well as the loss of her brother and his wife. Circumstances changed by tragedy means looking after her nephew whilst trying to stay in the sport she loves so dearly. Cricket to her is like breathing. Much to her annoyance the new Captain is England’s former test cricket captain, Jase Willis.  For both of them it’s a clear case of their hearts being owned by the sport and feeling lost without it. A brief meeting in the past has Alyssa dreading having to work so closely with him.

Alyssa is existing but not living life as such, her love for her nephew and her brother’s memory means she’s put parts of her own life on complete hold. Sometimes it takes love to show you the way and that’s exactly what happens to Alyssa, albeit reluctantly.

‘This was a game to him and the kiss had been a tactic of his offense. Well screw him; I wasn’t going to play the game.’

Jase Willis is known for his bad temper, his womanizing ways and his fortitude on the green. He’s a brooding enigmatic powerhouse and Alyssa has quite the battle on her hands; a battle that changes face after spending more time with Jase, the Lion. Frustrating doesn’t even cover it and a relationship which began on rocky grounds moves onto a more stable and even road of romance. If you love enemies to lovers and second chance love with a heavy element of sport then this is definitely a book for you.

“There are so many reasons why that shouldn’t have worked,” his voice was low.
“But my God, I’m glad it did.”

GONE – Standalone
SYNOPSIS

Rebecca Walters harbours a dark secret, and as the fifty-three bangles she wears on her wrists as a self-imposed sentence of guilt remind her, she can’t even begin to consider moving on. Not after what happened on that night six months ago… a night which she can’t remember and yet managed to change her life forever.

When Rebecca comes across Joshua Adams, man equally haunted by past tragedies, on a moonlit beach, both of their lives are destined to change forever, and when the girl made out of the sun meets the boy made out of the moon and sea, anything can happen… but will the knowledge of their murky pasts bring them together or drive them apart?

Will Rebecca finally be able to claim her freedom? Will she stay and fight to be the girl she found on the sandy beaches of Cornwall or is she destined to keep running and hiding from a past that won’t stay Gone? One thing’s for certain: either way, nothing will ever be the same again.
