FOR FORESTER (For You #2) by J NATHAN :: REVIEW

A beautiful and swoony sports romance with younger man & single mum

SYNOPSIS

Trace
I’m Alabama’s star wide receiver. I’ve got mad skills on and off the field, and it’s no secret I’m heading into the draft after the upcoming season. But I’m home for the summer to make some cash before my senior year. Being back under my parents’ roof isn’t the ideal situation, but the moment I see Marin, the star of my adolescent fantasies, I know it’s about to get interesting. She may not have noticed me back then, but I’ve got a feeling it’s just a matter of time before she lets me turn those fantasies into reality.

Marin
The last time I saw Trace Forester he was just a kid tearing up the neighborhood on his skateboard. That was when I was foolish enough to think I had the perfect husband and the perfect life. But now my life is in shambles and Trace is back, all grown up, hot as hell, and exuding major confidence. It would be so easy to fall for his good looks and undeniable charm. So easy to let him into my life. Too bad I learned the hard way that nothing worth having ever comes easy.

“I like when you look at me,” he said, his voice vulnerable
“Oh, yeah?”
He nodded. “It makes me feel like you see me.”

We absolutely LOVED this book! It was exactly what we needed and everything we love! Talk about swooooon! This book hit all the right spots and not one, but two sweet guys stole our hearts. One a sexy, sweet, confident wide receiver footy player, the other an adorably cute little 5 year old. Oh dear, the relationship between the big burly footballer and the funny, loving little CJ was the cherry on top of an already heart stealing, romantic read!

This was our second read by J Nathan and again, she completely won us over with her wonderful engaging characters and beautifully sweet, funny, emotional and sexy story! For Forester, was a story about love, self-discovery, and most importantly about listening to your heart!

‘I was nineteen. I was in my prime. I could have any girl I wanted. But the one I wanted was three houses away with a kid and a soon-to-be-ex-husband. Strange how things happened. ‘

This book had so many elements we love in a story : single Mum, older woman/younger man, a heart melting child, a book boyfriend to die for, a genuine believable romance, a sports element where you really feel the sporting atmosphere, fun banter, searing chemistry and just enough drama to kick start your heart! Yep, For Forester was a winner on all counts; we can’t wipe this happy smile off our faces!

We briefly met Trace Forester in For Finlay (For You #1 – a standalone) as he was Caden’s roommate and immediately after finishing that book we wanted Trace’s story! The cocky number #82 ‘Bama boy receiver really left his mark on us, so we’ve been counting the months to read this book!

“I need you, Marin.”
“I don’t want to need you.”

Twenty nine year old Marin’s marriage has just fallen apart after finding out her dick of a husband has been cheating on her. Marin now has to face the prospect of starting again, being a single Mum to sweet little CJ, having given up her career to be the stay at home wife her husband wanted.

Marin bumps into her neighbour Trace, who is home from college for the summer and who is no longer the teen she remembers causing havoc on his skateboard. Oh no, 19 year old Trace is very much a man…all rippling abs and biceps, but not only that, Trace has a sweet nature, together with a maturity that surpasses his age and the two fall into an easy friendship.

“I’ve always seen you, Marin. All those years. And it’s just crazy to finally have you looking back and seeing me.”

Wanting CJ to have a male influence in his life, and with Trace being a soon to be pro footballer, Marin asks Trace to spend time with CJ and impart his knowledge and be a male support for CJ. A job he’s more than happy to oblige with, because no one can resist that little 5 year old cherub, CJ.

“I want to be the one who laughs when he tells a silly story about what happened at school. I want to be on the receiving end of his hugs because he gives the best hugs.”

Well, as you can imagine, things progress between Marin and Trace. The banter between them was funny and sexy, the chemistry crackled!  Little did Marin know that she had starred in many of Trace’s  Trace’s teenage fantasies which were about to come true!

“I spent so many nights alone in my room thinking of you,” he murmured against my skin. “What you’d feel like. What you’d taste like. What you’d sound like when I made you come.”

J Nathan did a splendid job in making us believe, to feel the emotional, physical and mental compatibility between Trace and Marin with every beat of our hearts, and if you’re wanting a book to knock you off your feet with heat, sweetness, emotion, a book boyfriend to add to the shelf, and if you’re looking for some serious swooninglook no further, because this book is it! We can’t get enough of this standalone sports series! A definite TBB recommendation!

THE DARKEST SUNRISE DUET by ALY MARTINEZ :: REVIEW

A poignant an emotional Duet.

The Darkest Sunrise Duet is available to purchase on Kindle below
The Darkest Sunrise – Book One

The Brightest Sunset – Book Two Releasing 27th July

THE DARKEST SUNRISE

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Whoever coined that phrase is a bald-faced liar. Words are often the sharpest weapon of all, triggering some of the most powerful emotions a human can experience.
“You’re pregnant.”
“It’s a boy.”
“Your son needs a heart transplant.”
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Lies.
Syllables and letters may not be tangible, but they can still destroy your entire life faster than a bullet from a gun.
Two words—that was all it took to extinguish the sun from my sky.
“He’s gone.”
For ten years, the darkness consumed me.
In the end, it was four deep, gravelly words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Porter Reese.”

THE BRIGHTEST SUNSET

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Bullshit.
Words destroyed me.
“I’m sorry. She didn’t make it.”
“Daddy, he can’t breathe!”
“There’s nothing more we can do for your son.”
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Lies.
Those syllables and letters became my executioner. I told myself that, if I didn’t acknowledge the pain and the fear, they would have no power over me. But, as the years passed, the hate and the anger left behind began to control me.
Two words—that was all it took to plunge my life into darkness.
“He’s gone.”
In the end, it was four soft, silky words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Charlotte Mills.”

“You smile for people because it makes them comfortable, but it makes you feel like a fraud. You go through the motions of living but only so people will stop asking if you’re doing okay. You laugh to remind yourself that you can still physically make the sound, even though you’re so fucking numb you don’t feel it. And you keep to yourself not because you like to be alone, but rather because you’re the only person who truly understands.”

Bring on the water works- this duet hits you right in that emotional core and pulls at your heart strings. Incredibly passionate, thrilling and heart breaking, we felt utterly morose as we read, sighing deep breaths of relief when the mood was somewhat lightened through injected humour making us laugh out loud. The romance element had that old school swoony feel and the heat was scorching. Aly Martinez wrote every scene with depth and intensity, demanding us to feel every moment.

‘Hope had become my greatest enemy. Hope that I could change. Hope that I could move on. Hope that other people like me existed. Hope that, even if it was only for a few hours, I wouldn’t have to be alone anymore. No questions. No judgement. No faking it.

Bullshit. Bullshit. Bullshit.’

Charlotte was a complicated heroine when we first met her. Our hearts were blown into smithereens when we learnt of what this –very lost- woman was going through after one moment of altruistic action sparked a tragedy that is every Mother’s nightmare. The thought of it had us sobbing uncontrollably. Whilst becoming an incredibly talented and sought after pulmonologist she’s still not living, merely existing. Fate throws a life changing meeting at her, causing complete upheaval and forcing Charlotte to question everything that has come before, now and what will come after. Our hearts bled as we inhaled every moment trying to savour but unable to stop reading as we experienced the darkness and felt the turmoil and gravity of grief.

“I can’t decide if we’re too real or not real enough…”

When we met Porter we immediately knew this man was something very special and he proved that every step of the way, on every page, and firmly cemented himself in our hearts. His story touched us deeply and as we went through the moments that shaped the man we completely lost it and had to put our kindles away to dry our crying eyes. At every twist and turn this man had our support and understanding and whilst there was an incredible vulnerability there was also a quiet strength alongside a huge beating heart. His sense of humour and quick wit is what brought the darkness into the light for us. The sparring between Charlotte and him was spot on and the connection palpable.

‘He kissed me. Apologetic and reassuring. Deep and meaningful. Heartbreaking even as it eased me. It was unlike anything I’d ever experienced. Porter kissed me with hope.’

At the heart of this story beyond the drama and heart wrenching emotion is the strong sense of family and the love of parents and children. The fierce loyalty and protection ingrained in thoughts, feelings and behaviour. We felt quite worn out from crying and laughing by the time we reached the end of this duet, but the journey was worth it. We fell in book love!

‘It felt like a nightmare in the middle of the sweetest dream.’

“You look at me like I’m the only woman you’ve ever seen. And hold me like you never want to let go. You laugh with me. And challenge me to be a better person, but at the same time, you remind me that there is nothing wrong with the person I already am.”

‘Tripp was treading dangerous water with his daughter’s heart. And he’d never gamble with that.’

We’ve just read another new to us Author and we loved every single minute of The Rancher and the City Girl by Joya Ryan. As always we pick our next read on what kind of reading mood we’re in and this time it was wanting a sweet, fun and sexy standalone without too much drama, and that is exactly what we got. It was fabulous. So well written, so addictive and so swoon worthy! It was such a feel good read! A sexy single dad Cowboy and a sweet and sassy city girl suddenly finding herself deep in country life. We are very excited about this series of standalones!

“I don’t want to bring stress to your situation.”

“Oh, you’re far past that, darlin’. You stress me out exceptionally on a daily basis.”

We fell head over heels in love with Tripp, the luscious cowboy and fantastic dad, friend and rancher; he has all the qualities that make us swoon. Raising his daughter, Gracie on his own with the help of his two best mates he’s wary of letting women in, not wanting his daughter to be hurt again nor his heart broken. So when he meets Charlotte, who looks like a fish out of water in their town, he knows it’s got to be a one night deal only. It just can’t be anything more.

‘Was this how cowboys got their ladies in Wyoming? Lay them out in their truck behind a historic building and eat them for dinner? If so, she could get on board with how things were done around these parts.’

Charlotte has come from the big city to help her injured Grammy. She’s got no clue what’s involved in running a farm but Grammy being the only family she’s got and loves she doesn’t want to be anywhere else until she’s no longer needed. Meeting a sexy cowboy was not part of her plans but she cannot say no to one night of passion with the sexy Stetson wearing stranger. ‘Charlie’ was so adorably clueless but not afraid to muck in. She cut a lonely figure, sweet and likeable, we were rooting for a budding gorgeous romance with her cowboy with scorching heat thrown in!

“Daddy gets grouchy when he’s hungry,” Gracie said to Charlotte.
‘She looked the man over, all six-plus feet of sexy, looking at her like she might be his last meal and he’d die happier for it. “I bet he does,” she whispered.

This story was such a great read and we highly recommend it for readers wanting a couple of hours of pure romance with steamy passion. We absolutely loved it to the point of wanting more not only story but time with the characters too. We have to mention Bo and Cash who live with Tripp, too. They had us in stitches and we look forward to their stories!

“Well, when you decide to be happy all the time, I’ll be here to celebrate with you,” Grammy said.

“Cricket is all I have. It’s all I’ve ever had.”

We love our sports romances and have read copious amounts, but we have to admit this was our first cricket romance. Having very limited knowledge of cricket as it’s just not a sport we follow, we were excited to see how we’d enjoy a romance set in the cricket world. We already knew we loved Anna Bloom’s writing as we’ve read her before and we were definitely in the mood for a bit of British. Did we enjoy it? We sure did, it’s a good slow burn romance with an epilogue that melted our hearts.

“Life.” And there it was, the one thing I never knew I wanted. A life of my own.

Once again we fell in love with the way Anna Bloom writes, it’s flawless, engaging, funny and has such realism. You feel like you get to know the characters and get completely immersed in the story of cricket. The Game had a real authenticity to it and it’s very clear that cricket is a sport Anna Bloom knows like the back of her hand. We do have to add though that for us we did struggle with the heavy focus on cricket in relation to the romance aspect. Whilst we love that the sport featured in great detail we would have liked the same for Alyssa and Jase in order to fully emotionally connect to this romance.

“This will be worth it?”
“It’s cricket. It’s always worth it.”

Alyssa is the queen of women’s cricket but is now the head fitness coach of a T20 cricket team after suffering an injury as well as the loss of her brother and his wife. Circumstances changed by tragedy means looking after her nephew whilst trying to stay in the sport she loves so dearly. Cricket to her is like breathing. Much to her annoyance the new Captain is England’s former test cricket captain, Jase Willis.  For both of them it’s a clear case of their hearts being owned by the sport and feeling lost without it. A brief meeting in the past has Alyssa dreading having to work so closely with him.

Alyssa is existing but not living life as such, her love for her nephew and her brother’s memory means she’s put parts of her own life on complete hold. Sometimes it takes love to show you the way and that’s exactly what happens to Alyssa, albeit reluctantly.

‘This was a game to him and the kiss had been a tactic of his offense. Well screw him; I wasn’t going to play the game.’

Jase Willis is known for his bad temper, his womanizing ways and his fortitude on the green. He’s a brooding enigmatic powerhouse and Alyssa has quite the battle on her hands; a battle that changes face after spending more time with Jase, the Lion. Frustrating doesn’t even cover it and a relationship which began on rocky grounds moves onto a more stable and even road of romance. If you love enemies to lovers and second chance love with a heavy element of sport then this is definitely a book for you.

“There are so many reasons why that shouldn’t have worked,” his voice was low.
“But my God, I’m glad it did.”

THE 5 STAGES OF FALLING IN LOVE by RACHEL HIGGINSON

The five stages

SYNOPSIS

The Five Stages of Falling in Love is a Contemporary Romance.
Elizabeth Carlson is living in the pits of hell- also known as grief.

Her husband of eight years, the father of her four children and the love of her life, died from cancer. Grady’s prognosis was grim, even from the start, but Liz never gave up hope he would survive. How could she, when he was everything to her?

Six months later, she is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life and get the kids to school on time. Both seem impossible. Everything seems impossible these days.

When Ben Tyler moves in next door, she is drowning in sorrow and pain, her children are acting out, and the house is falling apart. She has no time for curious new friends or unwanted help, but Ben gives her both. And he doesn’t just want to help her with yard work or cleaning the gutters. Ben wants more from Liz. More than she’s capable of ever giving again.

As Liz mourns her dead husband and works her way through the five stages of grief, she finds there’s more of her heart to give than she thought possible. And as new love takes hold, she peels away the guilt and heartache, and discovers there’s more to life than death.

“I can’t take anymore heartbreak.”
“Then it’s a good thing I’m not going to break your heart.”

The 5 Stages of Falling in Love was as heart-warming as it was heart wrenching. The prologue was one of the saddest and most beautifully moving passages we’ve read and we truly felt every word, every moment and we felt it hard. What a way for this author to bring us into her story.

‘Grief doesn’t get easier with each stage. Grief becomes harder, more difficult to face, more consuming with each breath I take. I am adrift in a sea of confusion.  I am lost in a desert of heartache.’

Liz is a young woman in her early 30’s with four children, left widowed and adrift after losing the one and only love of her life. Liz is forced to deal with the grief of losing her husband, her soulmate, all whilst remaining buoyant enough to be support and confidante to her children. Despite drowning in her own grief, Liz had to be strong and attempt to ease the grief and confusion enveloping her children.

How do you move on after experiencing a soul searing love and a completely heartbreaking loss?

‘Sometimes love didn’t make sense. And that was okay.’

A bright light in Liz’s otherwise dull existence is her new neighbour Ben Tyler. An upbeat, eternal bachelor who takes a shine to Liz, enjoying her company and he in turn offers Liz an outlet to share her thoughts and escape her misery. We have to say, the introduction between Liz and Ben was hilarious! This was such a sweet and funny scene and on that note we have to say, this author wrote these children beautifully. They felt real, vulnerable and they completely touched our hearts.

“Is that why Ben is here…..did Daddy send Ben to take care of us?”

As Liz goes through her stages of grief you desperately will her to come out the other end and open her heart to Ben, but the road isn’t an easy one. Along with grief, there is the feeling of guilt for wanting to move on, for experiencing feelings Liz thinks she shouldn’t feel.

‘Our feelings for each other didn’t start as a seed, they started as an ocean.’

The 5 Stages of falling In Love is tragic yet so beautifully hopeful. There were times our sympathies tended to lie with Ben as, in this character, the author wrote such an endearingly wonderful man, that when he hurt, we hurt and these moments sometimes had us disconnecting from Liz. Her actions often felt unfair, though we did understand the conflicting feelings she was experiencing.

‘Ben wasn’t the answer to all of my problems. He might have eased the burden, be he didn’t take them away.’

There were a few times, particularly towards the end, where we felt as though we were being told, rather than shown the story, we would have also loved more ‘afters’ as we felt it ended a little abruptly.

But that said, if you’re looking for a beautiful, emotional and story of grief, love, hope and love, then this standalone read is a certainly recommended to satisfy feelings.
