“You’re the only one I see. When I’m singing to a sea of faces, yours is the one I look for.”

Well, the Stolen Melody Duet was one entertaining, angsty, drama filled read, that’s for sure. If you’re in the mood for one of those Kindle throwing reads where you find yourself shouting at the characters to….communicate, then this sexy, swoony, dramatic and emotional romance is for you!

‘Music has always been my purpose, but Lyric waltzed in and gave substance to it all.’

If there’s one thing we loved about K K Allen’s Up in the Treehouse, it was the relationship build, the intense feeling of love, which was also apparent in the Stolen Melody Duet. Whilst the relationship between Lyric and Wolf was anything but a slow build, we no less believed the magnitude of the attraction and chemistry between these two passionate characters.

“You don’t see it, do you? What you do with words?”

In this rock star romance, K K Allen certainly brought the fabulous -behind the scenes music feel- we crave in these stories, putting us right in the moment with the band; with Lyric and Wolf as they navigated their way through the turbulence and obstacles of life on the road as a rock star.  The force and sensation, the excitement as the band took to the stage made us feel as though we were there.

Both Lyric and Wolf are products of the music industry, destined to be part of the scene thanks to their parents. Lyrics father is a well-respected rocker, her mother….well, she’s another story, and Wolf’s father was also part of the scene, so it was in the stars these two would follow that same path. Lyric behind the scenes, and Wolf Chapman, as the driving force and front man of Wolf, the band.

Both Lyric and Wolf carry self regrets from their pasts, harbouring a lot of pain which is reflected in how each live their lives, finding it hard to trust and let down those walls. Opening up doesn’t come easy for these two, especially so Lyric, who really has been bitten by disloyalty from loved ones.

‘It’s funny how fighting for someone you love gives you more strength than fighting for yourself.’

We have to admit there were times Lyric drove us to distraction. Poor Wolf didn’t know if he was coming or going. Lyric was hiding secrets from her past, Wolf was left in the dark as to what they were, yet was expected to understand Lyric’s hesitancy, a hard ask when he has no idea what her secrets entailed. We kept thinking….just tell him…communicate.

‘Here words are her weapons, and I’ve lost count of how many times she’s stabbed me. All I know is that it fucking hurts.’

We loved the relationship build, the music feel, the secondary characters were all fabulous as were the developing relationships of the Wolf band members, the comradery of the band and the banter between them. The romance was swoony and it was certainly hot, though at times we felt the sex overshadowed the emotional relationship between Lyric and Wolf, but then again, the physical release became a much needed escape and connection for them both.

“I want this,” he says each word in between each thrust. “I want us.”

This was one roller-coaster we didn’t want to get off! We probably would have preferred a little less dramatics, but overall the sexy, swoony and emotional elements we enjoyed far outweighed the odd annoyances.  Fans of angsty rock star romances, who want to feel as though they’re part of the story, and who love having their stomachs (and hearts) tied up in knots; you’ll revel in this duet!

‘He steals my breath, my heart, and my soul, all in one telling kiss.’

“Don’t go falling in love with me, Hayes Campbell.”
“I’m not gonna fall in love with you. I’m a rock star. We don’t do that.”
“You’re a boy band member.”
“Well…I guess all bets are off then.”

Rock stars – we can’t help but fall in love with them, and you’d be hard pressed to find a man as soulful and beautiful as Hayes Campbell, the twenty year old singer with boy band, August Moon as he falls for 39 year old divorcee, and mother of a 12 year old daughter, Solène Marchand.

“What is it you want from me, then?” Solène
“Everything.”
Hayes

As soon as this book hit our radar, we knew we had to read it! A tumultuous rock star romance, with an age gap is exactly the type of read we devour and wow! We were completely floored by this story; easily becoming swept up in its honesty and raw emotion and by the striking prose of first time author, Robinne Lee. It’s hard to believe this is her first published novel, because Robinne Lee, delivered it all in The Idea of You. We swooned, we laughed, loved and oh boy did we cry! We felt everything and found Solene and Hayes story to be captivating, incredibly heartfelt, moving, candid, unique and sincere. This author writes with a knowledgeable and beautiful prose that encapsulated everything we love, but rarely find in this trope. Impressive to say the least.

“You. Are fucking everything to me, I’m not going anywhere.”

The synopsis tells you all you need to know to decide if this books piques your interest, but we promise you, what you’ll find between the pages is so much more than a rock star meets girl story. So much more and we feel the best way to experience it is spoiler free. We urge you to simply allow Hayes and Solène’s love story to unravel before your eyes and experience the truthfulness and emotion as the story slowly builds, holding you captive until the very last page, as Solène and Hayes’ love story climbs to its crescendo.

‘The thought crossed my mind that this could be dangerous. Not the ill-advised sex with the just out of his teens pop star, but the cuddling. The lying there, drinking in his scent, watching his chest rise and fall, allowing myself to bask in my own happiness. I could fall in love this way.’

Their initial attraction is physical, a chemistry that ignites when they meet backstage after an August Moon concert, Solène attended with her daughter and 2 of her friends. We did, at first,  wonder what so enamoured the sweet, wise beyond his years, Hayes to pursue the somewhat aloof Solène so vigorously, but we trusted the author to slowly reveal all. Of course, Solène oozed beauty, poise and confidence, but what did Hayes see behind Solène’s facade that made him so desperate to woo her? Despite the obvious physical connection, we knew there was more, and as we delved deeper into Hayes persona, it all became clear. Hayes’ emotional maturity belied his cheekiness and his 20 years. Hayes was an old soul and this young man matched Solène emotionally, intellectually and physically. Their building relationship was a thing of beauty setting the foundation of friendship to lovers and beyond. It was quite simply, breathtaking, passionate and heartfelt.

“How did we get here? This was only supposed to be lunch, remember? This was only supposed to be lunch.”
“You,” he said, his voice frayed, foreign.
“Me?”
“You. You let me unfold you.”

Whilst we may not have completely warmed to Solène, we absolutely related to her feelings, and the way in which Robinne Lee identified this character; her struggles, her insecurities, her torment, her sacrifices and the vilification she received because of the age difference between her and Hayes, was exceptional. We understood it all completely and perceived the reason we found her to be aloof was her upbringing and the fact that Hayes was such a beautiful, warm, sensitive and honest character who wore his heart on his sleeve. He was something else, this man!

‘There had probably been many before me, and there would be many after, but in that moment, it was just me.’

Hayes Campbell, where do we begin to express our feelings about him? Hayes is up there as one of the most arresting, charming, engaging, sweet and genuine characters we’ve read.  This man had us sobbing buckets! Oh and our (and we think the authors) muse, Harry Styles, certainly helped as well!

“Look at me. Look at me. It’s just us. It’s just you and me in this relationship. Fuck everything else.”

Robinne Lee nailed this story in every way. The emotion of both characters was spot on, the rock star feel we crave in these themes was paramount, but delivered so uniquely as this author put her own stamp, her knowledge and her awe inspiring talent on this trope.  Solène and Hayes were two opposites, leading two completely different lifestyles who just seemed to fit but time would tell if Solène could live in Hayes’ chaotic world.

“This is insane. You realize that, right?”
“Only if someone gets hurt.”
“Someone always gets hurt, Hayes.”

As the story drew to a close, we reflected on what we’d read wanting to give this author a standing ovation for many reasons. For delivering believable characters, for not succumbing to standard story clichés, for having the ingenuity to deliver this story honestly, warts and all. We really couldn’t have asked for more. The banter between Hayes and Solène was witty, naughty and sincere making us grin from ear to ear. The passion was explosive, sensual, hot and thankfully not always over descriptive yet always moving, passionate and sexy as hell; not once did we feel inclined skim the intimate scenes as we’ve found ourselves doing recently. And the emotion…oh God the emotion, well, tears fell freely that’s for sure. At times uplifting, painful and certainly worth every tear.

“You want to be kissed, Solene? You think you can handle that?”

So…standing ovation to you, Robinne Lee! Bravo! Thank you for your bravery in delivering this story your way and for giving us a backstage pass and an almost voyeuristic look into the world of the rich and famous with Hayes, Solène and the other four cheeky lads of August Moon; Rory, Oliver, Simon and Liam. We were drawn into a life we can only fantasise about, the reality of which is a far cry from the romantic notion we dream up. We’re not sure if you plan to write more about the band but we’re not opposed to begging you to do so. One things for sure, we would love more!

‘He was such a vision of virility, it almost felt dirty to watch.’

‘Agony cut through me. A dull, bitter blade. The desperation to save someone who didn’t want to be saved.’

The beauty of AL Jackson’s words shone through this highly emotional and passionate romance which had our hearts breaking and our eyes welling up throughout. The writing was flawless and we felt every single word. Stand is the last book in the Bleeding Stars series and can be read as a standalone. This is a series that has stolen our book reading hearts.

‘Every inch of the man was a sublime contradiction. His entire demeanour serenity and war. Peace and strife. As if the man bore the scars of a thousand battles and still managed to look past the brutality of the world.’

This is Zee’s – the drummer boy of Sunder- story and wow has this man had a tragic past, a past he’s still living with heavy guilt, responsibility and paying an unrealistic debt to his brother. His heart is huge and pure despite having suffered tremendously. AL Jackson sure put us through it with his story, she made our hearts break into pieces. We fell in utter love with Zee and he held our hearts from page one till the last. A quiet stillness of a man with a storm brewing inside. A gentle giant living the consequences of his past. Living someone else’s life out of responsibility giving up on all personal dreams and hope.

‘An angel. The brightest light in the midst of my darkness. Starshine…I couldn’t get lost in this girl. But there was a part of me that wanted to do it anyway. Give up and give in.’

Sometimes we meet our soul mate when we least expect it. Alexis is a beautiful young woman who fights to live and grabs life by the hands. She’s suffering under the life of her twin sister’s demise into a life of violence, despair and harrowing distress. Finding herself in a dire situation which could have disturbing consequences, she’s saved by Zee who happens upon her and an immediate bond is formed. What comes from this fateful night is a road fraught with personal battles and open wounds. It’s captivatingly sad yet hopeful too insofar that love is persevering if you place your trust and faith in it.

“Do you feel it, Alexis? It’s about tapping into the emotion. The pain. The joy. The love. The lust.”

We fell in love with this story, not wanting it to end yet desperately wanting love and forgiveness to win out. Having read the last two books in this series we are needing to read the rest as Sunder is a group of lads who stole our hearts and we’re now desperate to hear everyone’s stories.

“Living is a choice. We decide how we wake up each morning and face the day. Either we’re led by hope or ruled by fear. And I won’t let circumstances define me. Maybe I’m a fool, because I will stand or I will fall, but I will never, ever allow fear to clip my wings.”

BREAKING GIANTS by L M HALLORAN :: REVIEW

Standalone Rock Star Romance

SYNOPSIS
A rockstar romance unlike any you’ve read before…

When I meet Julian Ashburn, the reclusive frontman of indie-rock legends Breaking Giants, I do what any sane woman would do. Embarrass myself, then insult him. Because you only live once, right?

Besides, keeping my distance from the enigmatic, songwriting genius is an act of self-preservation. Julian is dangerous—a pool of kerosine to my pyromaniac. I have a weakness for broken men.

But sometimes the stories we tell and the songs we sing—about family, love, and ourselves—have to be rewritten in order for us to grow. Call it Fate, or stars aligning, or cosmic accident, but I’m about to find out that of the two of us, Julian isn’t the broken one.

The greatest love songs break your heart.

If you’re lucky, they heal it, too.

“It’s like a fairytale.”
“I don’t know any fairytales that are as dark and twisted as this one.”

Music owns our souls with rock star romances being one of our favourite things. There’s just something about this theme that really catches our attention, though to be honest, it’s also one we find can be a bit of a hit and miss, mainly because,  the focus sometimes sides heavily on the romance aspect, forgetting the all-important musical experience we crave. We love to be wooed as much by the musical feeling of the story as the romantic entanglement therein.

‘My body is a song – he knows every note.’

L.M. Halloran is a new to us author and the tagline of her synopsis especially grabbed our attention. How could we not be seduced by…’A rockstar romance unlike any you’ve read before’.. Yep, we HAD to read it with that statement.

We really enjoyed Breaking Giants (great name for a band by the way) and we’re pleased to say L.M. Halloran did deliver on both the romance and the musical aspect of the story, with a good dose of angst, though we don’t feel this rock star romance delivered on the ‘unlike anything we’ve read before’ promise we had hoped, though saying that we have devoured a lot of rock star reads over the years!

‘I watch, silent and empty, as my happiness leaves, slamming the front door behind him.’

The heart and soul of the music was most definitely prevalent throughout this story which told of the on/off sizzling attraction between lead singer of the Breaking Giants, Julian Ashburn and Rose Cunningham, who runs a coffee shop in Seattle and is the daughter of a music producer father and a famed singer/songwriter mother. Both of who, have sadly passed.

Did fate have a hand in Rose and Julian’s destiny? And if so, fate was given a bitch of a job with these two fighting every step of the way! Timing, feelings, commitments, the planets not being in alignment…it seemed everything conspired to put a cog in the wheels of this union.

‘He is a craving beyond my control. A mental obsession.’

Breaking Giants is beautifully written with us experiencing the soul searching and healing needed between Rose and Julian, both of whom were weighed down by baggage from their past and their push/pull relationship certainly delivered some angst!

27 year old Rose is the living legacy of addiction. Being the daughter of a deceased drug addict mother who instilled a belief in the singer/songwriter Rose that love was responsible for the death of art. That love was the killer of all happiness. A belief Rose carried from her young impressionable 13 year old self.

‘Music is the only lover that will never leave you, Rose.’

32 year old Julian, also has issues as a reformed alcoholic, he’s been through the mill, seen the downside of life, and even though he’s part of a hugely successful band, he prefers to be more of a  recluse, leaving the spotlight to his mates, his fellow band members Matt, Jackson and Nick.

We really felt the creative souls beneath these characters and we felt their pain, though we didn’t quite experience the emotional intensity we would have hoped considering the trauma both characters had lived through.  We loved the Seattle setting which brought a life force to the story, the secondary characters were delightful, and the epilogue delivered an unexpected surprise, culminating in perfectly beautiful way to end the story.  A highly enjoyable rock star romance!

I broke both our hearts that day when I told her I was leaving. I was young. I made the right decision for me, but the wrong decision for us. I’ve poured my soul into my music, but I’ve never forgotten her. Her smell, her smile.

And now I’m going back.

After ten years.

I hope I can explain that after all this time.

In Forever My Girl we are introduced to Liam Page.  Liam left town and walked out on the girl he loved ten years previous to pursue a music career and never didn’t look back.  Or did he?

Liam appears to have it all.  Fame, fortune, women………any woman he wants , except the one he still thinks about every day – the woman who truly stole his heart ten years ago.

Liam lives quite the nomadic lifestyle, touring and living out of a suitcase and never putting down roots.  He doesn’t seem to belong.

Liam is pulled back to his hometown of Beaumont after a tragic event and prepares himself to once again meet up with the girl whose heart he broke all those years ago and who still owns a large piece of his heart to this day.

Josephine Preston had to move on.  She was forced to pick up the pieces and build a new life for herself after Liam’s departure and has found happiness living in Beaumont with Nick.

When Liam comes back to Beaumont and once again comes face to face with Josie he is not quite prepared for the effect she will have on him after all this time.  Josie is knocked for six seeing Liam again especially when seeing him makes her question everything that happened the day he left and every day that she has spent without him since.

Josie is confused and questions everything about her life since the day Liam left her and broke her heart. Does she still have feelings for Liam? And if so should those feelings be left buried deep where they belong? The day he left he completely devastated her heart.  Can she forgive?

“I thought for sure we’d spend forever together. I thought our love was one of a kind. I would almost be okay if he had met someone else and fallen in love, but he didn’t. He just left. He said he was suffocating.”

There is something that pulls these two together.  They shared a love that was so deep, so passionate and so engulfing that really, could either of them just move on and forget about the other totally?  I’m not so sure they could.

Forever My Girl came as a complete surprise to me.  I wasn’t sure what to expect but the synopsis had definitely piqued my interest.

Heidi McLaughlin is a new author and Forever My Girl is her first book in the Beaumont Series and let me tell you, I will be lining up for book two.

Forever My Girl is told from alternating POV’s through the voices of Liam and Josie.  I love dual POV’s and this is told in such a way that it allows the reader the chance to get close to the characters and really feel their story.  We get to hear from two different voices and each brings so much to the story that you really do connect with them in every way.

I adored watching Josie and Liam’s second chance love develop and I was so enamored by them.  As much as I loved this relationship, it was the bonding and flourishing relationship with Noah and Liam that also captured my heart.

I loved everything about this story.  There only one scene I would have liked explored a little more but the fact it wasn’t in no way detracted from the story.  It was a scene with Nick that I would have liked to have “felt” rather than “read”.

I love second chance love stories.  I love friend to lover’s stories, I love books with beautiful characters, I love books about deep friendships and I love rock star stories and Forever My Girl had it all for me.  It was at times sweet, at times emotional, at times funny, always endearing and the chemistry between Liam and Josie could be felt in every word .

If you want to read a book that is all heart – full of characters you will instantly connect with and love from the first page to the last then Forever My Girl is the book for you.

A beautiful read that I devoured and loved from start to finish.
