LOVE ME IN THE DARK by MIA ASHER :: REVIEW

Standalone – emotional second chance at love

SYNOPSIS

Two strangers in Paris …
One passionate, earth-shattering kiss.

He was the artist upstairs
with the tantalizing smile and laughing eyes.

He was the devil inviting me to sin,
seducing me to dance in the bright moonlight.

He was desire and need.

When he touched me, my body sang.
My soul came alive.

But I belonged to another man,
and he didn’t want to let me go.

“Maybe in another life we’ll meet again and get it right. But whatever happens, you will always remain my one perfect memory, my one perfect dream. I love you, my beautiful man.”

Well didn’t Mia Asher just wow us with her words, so flawless, enticing, fluid and vivid. We were swept away in this heart-breaking yet hope filled love story. It was compulsive reading. Whilst for us, Mia Asher is known for her high angst and kindle throwing; this was neither. The balance was perfect and the mood went from highly emotional, to swoony to frustratingly heart-breaking to…..well let’s just say it was a highly passionate and exciting ride.

‘My arms outstretched, I’d danced to the vibrant music of life. I prayed for romance, adventure, the unknown. I wanted to fall in love and love to the point of no return. I wanted the turmoil, the stress, the upheaval, and chaos…’

Valentina is a wild fire, loving life and everything it has to offer- a girl with a grandiose life perspective.  Life is an adventure and she’s wanting to grab it by the scruff of the neck, wringing every drop of enjoyment out of it. Then she meets William and is swept away by this enigmatic man’s attention and love. Where Valentina’s joy was life, it’s a far cry from where she finds herself 12 years later, suddenly alone in an apartment in Paris, married and lonely, questioning every aspect of her life and marriage to William.

‘If Valentina were mine, I would have moved heaven and earth to get to her. Because when you finally find something worth living for, you fight until there isn’t one more drop of blood left in you.’

When Valentina finds herself at a crossroad the unexpected presence of the mysterious Sebastian throws a naked spotlight on her deepest fears and where her place is in life. A man who throws everything up in the air and awakens her to who she really is, who she was and who she lost.

‘She reminds me of the sea; untamed, unpredictable, but beautiful, so damn beautiful.’

Sebastian was divine and his story heart-breaking. Two lost souls meeting when the timing is everything but right. Or is it? Is it the much needed catalyst for healing and reawakening? Is this accidental meeting what sparks the ultimate unveiling of lies, deceptions and tragedy?

‘He kisses me like he’s dying and my lips are kiss last breath. It’s a kiss that rearranges the stars in my own little galaxy, setting my life in a new course, changing my destiny. And if I crash and burn like a falling star, what does it matter when for this brief instant I’m in his arms? For the first time in a very long time, there isn’t ice inside of me. Instead, there’s a bright, hot, blazing fire.’

We have to say the first half of this book had us enthralled and we were feeling every moment- every word. Whilst we absolutely loved it, there came a point where it went in a direction that felt like an abrupt story change that ended up feeling quite rushed belying the beauty and romance of what came before. It almost felt like the addition derailed it somewhat which is such a shame as we were absolutely loving this story. That being said, Mia Asher is an incredible story-teller and there’s a real accomplished beauty and flawless control to her writing.

‘This. This is life. This is love. Feel it all. Feel him and believe. Believe. Believe.’

4 ‘sobbing’ Stars – Spoiler-Free Review

‘He wanted to unzip her wounded heart, trace the open and vulnerable line with his tongue.’

We absolutely love the writing duo of K Larsen and Mara White; they’re pretty fabulous. Their writing is flawless, seamless and one completely complements the other. This story was superbly written, it was evocative with moments of stunning beauty. We could not put this story down and read with trepidation and worry, out of fear for where these two Authors were taking us.

“Since the day you joined the world, you marched to the beat of your own drum.”

This was a story of soul mates, the cruelty as well as the joys of life and the inspiration one person can be to another. This is a romance unlike others or the typical. Rather, this is a journey of life, Ryan Walters’ life –to be specific- with enough drama and obstacles to leave you exhausted as you turn the last page. We say Ryan’s story, as for us, this was his story. One that left us emotionally wrung out by the end.

‘Ryan suddenly had the sinking feeling that Jackie was even more unattainable than he had originally imagined her to be. Like a masterpiece in a museum, look but don’t touch. Admire it, love it. It can even be your favorite, but it will never belong to you.’

Like we said, The Marriage Pact was all about Ryan for us. He was one of those amazing and wonderful heroes you meet that is so all encompassing you literally become addicted, unable to look away. He had the biggest heart; he loved with an honest and unyielding ferocity that is unrivalled. His personality was so big it overshadowed those around him. His voice was magnificent and powerful to the point that we felt like we were made to care to such a degree that we felt utterly protective of him, wanting him to have the life he so deserved with the people who could measure up and be deserving of his light and his compassionate humanity. Because of this we resented how his life stood still as a result of the control wielded by another. His happiness dependant on the actions of the woman who held his heart in her cold detached hands. One knock after another creating a domino effect ultimately impacting Ryan and the possibility of love with his soulmate. Because of this we read with a melancholy in our hearts and a sad frustration ever present.

‘Jackie was vulnerable, she was sweet and sensitive. But she was hell-bent on not showing it and Ryan had learned to – no he’d been trained to accept whatever little he could get.’

The Marriage Pact is a recounting, a memoir if you will, of a young man who gave his heart to his best friend, Jackie. This girl remained a bit of an enigma to us throughout the years we spent with them together as well as apart. Despite getting her POV we felt that those chapters served more as an almost informative segment placed in a very personal story told by a young man. Whilst her story broke our hearts, we felt like we were looking in, rather than feeling as if we were there.

‘He would always reach out to her. She held that exalted place in his heart as the first person to whom you would tell both the good and bad. And for all he knew, maybe she always would. Maybe they were meant to be best friends, nothing less, nothing more.’

The dramatic effects tended to overshadow that romantic connection of friends to lovers; who were ‘meant to be’ in the forever kind of way. Almost as if romance took a back seat as we were told of a story that in many respects broke our hearts to the point of emotional exhaustion. Those moments of romance we felt and got to experience, well…. that vulnerable romance was a beauty to behold.

‘The years of letters felt romantic, even if they never saw each other again. Maybe it was the old fashioned quality or the waiting game between sending and receiving that made it feel more special.’

You can’t force tears out of a reader, the connection and emotional bond has to be there in order to feel the force of those powerful moments. We got all the emotion from Ryan and his family, his chapters were laden with his inner turmoil and his passionate feelings and beliefs. In some respect they were the profound and had the depth that inspired that important connection for us as opposed to those of Jackie, in our opinion.  However, we never once doubted the strength and power of Ryan’s love for Jackie, hence why we wanted to climb inside our kindle and bear hug this wonderful man. The Authors made us care so much, we perhaps cared too much, an admirable feat.

‘What an extraordinary effort it was to come into this world and leaving it seemed unfairly easy. Life was tenuous, mortality scary. Death was so cruel and yet life was stronger, he’d just witnessed it in all of its raw and almighty glory.’

4.5 Sargent Sexy Stars!

‘It was the man. The man I’d had feelings for almost two years before he’d touched me. The man who made me weak with one look. The man who could control my body with just a breathy whisper. A good man with a good heart who was brave and spent his days protecting others while the world made it hard as hell. He was beautiful and flawed…..’

The Brave Line delivered so many elements we love in a story! Sexy dirty talking protective and possessive alpha hero, sassy heroine who gave him a run for his money, chemistry that was off the charts, steamy scenes that melted our Kindles, a smidgeon of suspense and a decent helping of emotion which had us tearing up, fabulous writing and a story that kept us glued to the spot!

Kate Stewart is a versatile author, we’ve sampled her rom-com and erotica, itching to read something more from her. The Brave Line synopsis hooked us immediately, suiting our current reading mood to a T, and it didn’t disappoint!

“I’m not a hero, period. For anyone.”
“Every time you put on that uniform and do the right thing, you are, no matter what happens.”

Randall Owen Day (Rowdy) is a 32 year old Police Sargent, lured into the Police Force in his youth after a painful and tragic event saw him and his three friends, April, Tyler and Kurt joining the Police to make a difference to the world. Years down the track, that youthful enthusiasm has given way to bitterness and cynicism as life on the streets, the loss of fellow police officers and friends together with an often thankless public have all left Rowdy rather jaded.

Michelle Long is a 29 year old dispatcher with the Charleston Police Department. She’s in the frontline taking calls, worrying about the officers and assisting the public head on. Michelle too is plagued by events of her past that haunt her to this day, though she’s come out tougher and more confident in herself and is a true survivor. Both Michelle and Rowdy deserve a second chance.

‘I would let love rule in my heart and take a piece of my soul, but I would never let its loss destroy all of me.’

Michelle and Rowdy hid a simmering lust fest for nearly two years and it’s only now Rowdy is returning her flirty advances but he wants filthy sex with her -end of- and makes her an offer we *cough cough* she couldn’t refuse…“As soon as I get you alone, I’m going to spread those legs and wrap them around my head and then I’m going to lick everything between them. And then I’m going to come down your throat. I warn you now, though, I’m fucking filthy.” And bloody hell, he sure was, but Michelle is no shrinking violet, she’s a sexual creature and Rowdy’s declaration sends her in a tailspin of want…as it did us!

This story really was a mixed bag. We expected steam, but bloody hell Rowdy and Michelle BURNED UP the pages; we nearly combusted! Then the emotion of the story hit and as it all unfolded with hearts being laid bare, we found ourselves experiencing a torrent of feelings for both these characters who carried painful reminders from their pasts, struggling to break down their walls.

‘She wanted to know me. I loved it. I hated it. I had nothing to offer. I didn’t need commitment, but I wanted her.’

Kate Stewart had our hearts in our mouths when she took us to the frontline with Sargent Day, capturing the heart palpitating minutes when these guys encounter life and death situations each day. She then held our hearts in her hands as Rowdy and Michelle came to grips with their feelings.

“I swear to God, the only thing I want to protect now is you. I’d go to war for you. I’d fight every goddamn battle for you even though you don’t need me to.”

We loved the dialogue between the characters which played such a pivotal role in our connection to them. We were right there with Rowdy and Michelle, learning their past tragedies, their fears, their pain and their flaws, and facing their demons and feelings head on, in real time. It was witnessing these pivotal moments in real time that ensured this story really hit the spot. What a FANTASTIC READ!

“Are you going to worry about me tonight?”

4 everlasting stars

‘…the search for Grace became an addiction, as he couldn’t believe she would be gone forever.’

We are incredibly aware that it’s easy to spoil this story for other readers so we won’t say anything about the story at all. We hope every reader gets to experience this beautiful story of love, grief, hope and heart-break as the S.L Scott intended. We don’t think we would have enjoyed this book as much as we did if we’d known what would transpire. So please go into this story bind.

‘Every spare minute that wasn’t dedicated to work, eating or sleeping he spent searching for his love.’

We don’t think soul mate romances come much more powerful than Missing Grace. It was overwhelmingly emotional, passionate, frustrating and heart-breaking. It was a reading race against time as we wanted to know what happened and why. We wanted Ben to find his peace, his calm, his happiness and his resolution. We wanted Ben to truly live again and for his heart to once more be whole. As for missing Grace; we teared up at the thought of what happened, fearing the worst. We hoped Ben’s relentless perseverance would pay off, in order to find an answer. We wanted this beautiful couple safe, somehow.

“You were taken from me.”

We pretty much read Missing Grace in one sitting, our emotions took a pounding and we were on tenterhooks worried were this story was going. We had so many questions and never felt truly safe. Once thing we never questioned though was Ben’s incredible love for Grace. Our hearts bled for this man who clearly loved with his entire being, never letting go of a love that would live till the end of time. Ben stole our hearts, completely. He was the heart and soul of this story. A beautiful man who never lost hope.

“Destiny is shaped by choice, not chance.”

4.5  ‘ the good bits’ Stars

“Fight for me, damn it. Stop fighting everything else and fight for me. For us”

Nashoda Rose has done it again! We’ve We’ve loved everything we’ve read from this talented author and after finishing Kept from You, we’re convinced this is one of our favourite series. There’s suspense, grit, passion, emotion and alpha goodness galore, not to mention pierced tattooed rock stars…yummy!  What’s not to love…oh and this was bloody hot! And sweet! And a little intense!

We’ve been with the Tear Asunder guys’ right from the beginning. We’ve shared their difficult and painful pasts, we’ve shared their love and happiness as they each meet their soul mate, their missing piece. This group of rag tag rock stars prove family isn’t the blood that runs through your veins, but the loyalty, trust and love that runs through your hearts. They’ve been through so much and there’s nothing they wouldn’t do for each other.

“…Nothing wins against love. It wins every single fuckin’ time.”

We’ve been desperate for Killian ‘Kite’ Kane’s story, the drummer from Tear Asunder in what seems forever and finally, the gorgeous guy with the Irish lilt shared his painful story with us. Killian grew up quite privileged and was loved deeply by his Mum and brother. His father however was a different story. This man openly detested Killian, making his life miserable. Due to circumstances we later learn about through Killian’s POV, Killian has become an angry young man, needing to fight to relieve himself of the pent up guilt he carries with him.

We first meet Killian and Savvy when he is 16 and she is 15. Savvy (Savannah) feels drawn to Killian and believes there is a lot of ‘good bits’ beneath the anguish this young man elicits. Killian, in turn is drawn to Savvy’s innocence and sweetness, savouring the goodness that surrounds her.

‘Her goodness was my fuckin’ drug, drawing me to her. ‘

They part ways soon after, with Killian unleashing a first kiss on Savvy that really would change everything. For both of them.  We flash forward 11 years in Toronto, with Killian enjoying success with his band, and Savvy down on her luck, seeking out Killian for a favour. Old feelings are unleashed with Killian not wanting the girl who always had a place in his heart to slip through his fingers. And that’s where the story begins.

‘I had my issues and she’d had a taste of them, and I knew I’d have to give her more of me. The parts of me I kept hidden.’

Whilst Kept from You didn’t quite pack the intensity and grittiness of the previous books, Killian and Savvy’s story was no less emotional, no less painful. We adored these characters and upon learning the full extent of Killian’s sacrifice and feelings for Savvy over the ‘lost’ years, our hearts damn near burst from our chests and we applauded Nashoda Rose for taking this turn with him.

‘I realized that the anger he carried with him ate away all his beauty. ‘

We do love a second chance love story and this one certainly fit the bill. Killian is all sorts of kinky alpha possessive yummy, yet he’s sweet, vulnerable and romantic as well. Not to mention sexy as sin for good measure! Savvy was a sharp, witty relatable character. Whilst this can be read as a standalone, we would strongly recommend reading the series to fully grasp and experience the bond between these men, the relationships of which we feel are the glue that holds this series together.

“You were always meant to be mine, Savvy.”
