BEHIND THE BARS by BRITTAINY C CHERRY

Standalone emotional, sweet second chance love story

SYNOPSIS

When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops.

I was the awkward musician, and she was the high school queen.
The only things we had in common were our music and our loneliness.

Something in her eyes told me her smile wasn’t always the truth.
Something in her voice gave me a hope I always wished to find.
And in a flash, she was gone.

Years later, she was standing in front of me on a street in New Orleans.
She was different, but so was I. Life made us colder. Harder. Isolated.

Caged.

Even though we were different, the broken pieces of me recognized the sadness in her.
Now she was back, and I wouldn’t make the mistake of letting her go again.

When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops.
When we met again, I became her darkest storm.

REVIEW

“You’re the music in a mute world, and my heart beats because you’re here.”

There’s no doubt about it, Brittainy C Cherry is responsible for some of the most heartbreaking, painful yet beautifully hopeful stories we’ve read. There is such sweet sensitivity and honesty to her words, we can’t help but be affected by them.

‘He played as if he were bleeding out into the streets of New Orleans. He left nothing on the table and gave his music his all. In that moment, I realized I never gave anything my all – not like him, not like that.’

Behind the Bars once again showcases this authors talent for reaching into the hearts of her readers with a story that’s both painfully sad, and uplifting and sweet at the same time, demonstrating the strength of the human spirit and the importance of love and hope.

‘Some days it was better to lie than to face the darkest truths.
Her heart was broken…’

Sixteen year old Elliott Adams was an outcast at high school. Prone to vicious bullying – a sad, lonely and tortured young man with a heart of gold in spite of the horribly painful and embarrassing treatment dished out to him day after day. Closed off emotionally except to those close to him, Elliott’s escape was music, until the day, Jasmine Greene stepped into his life.

‘When Elliott had his music, his soul was free. Because of jazz, Elliott was able to breathe.’

Jasmine Greene had been denied a childhood thanks to her overbearing mother’s insistence that Jasmine obtain success as a pop singer, home schooling her and, Jasmine only knew the rigours of dance and singing rehearsals. Fun did not factor into Jasmine’s life. Though very popular at her new high school, Jasmine too, cut a sad and lonely figure, berated and belittled by her unloving mother, Jasmine seeks solace in the kind, sweet Elliott and sets out to save him from the bullies with heartbreaking and tragic consequences.

‘That’s when I saw the boy who played the music. I’d always say I saw him first, but he’d argue that was a lie.’

The story skips six years after high school when Jasmine and Elliott reconnect and are forced to deal with their painful time apart and it is quite simply heartbreaking.

“I just need you to know that my heart is rough sometimes. Sometimes it beats unevenly. Some days it’s battered and bruised….”

Brittainy C Cherry so beautifully captured the richness of the New Orleans jazz scene and the atmosphere of NOLA. You could breathe it in, feel the heat, and hear the music. This author certainly  delivered a story that did pull at our heartstrings however there were times we felt a little disconnected to the story due to jumps in time and certain aspects and moments we would have liked fleshed out a little more. In saying that, there’s no doubt readers will fall in love with Jasmine, Elliott and the sincerity of Brittainy C Cherry’s words. How could you not?

SYNOPSIS
To Whom it May Concern,It was easy to call us forbidden and harder to call us soulmates. Yet I believed we were both. Forbidden soulmates.
When I arrived to Edgewood, Wisconsin I didn’t plan to find him. I didn’t plan to stumble into Joe’s bar and have Daniel’s music stir up my emotions. I had no clue that his voice would make my hurts forget their own sorrow. I had no idea that my happiness would remember its own bliss.
When I started senior year at my new school, I wasn’t prepared to call him Mr. Daniels, but sometimes life happens at the wrong time for all the right reasons.
Our love story wasn’t only about the physical connection.
It was about family. It was about loss. It was about being alive. It was silly. It was painful. It was mourning. It was laughter.
It was ours.
And for those reasons alone, I would never apologize for loving Mr. Daniels.

BOUNTIFUL (True North #4) by SARINA BOWEN

Second chance small town romance – can be read as a standalone

SYNOPSIS

No last names. No life stories. Those were the rules.

Once upon a time a cocky, copper-haired tourist sauntered into Zara’s bar. And even though she knew better, Zara indulged in a cure for the small-town blues. It was supposed to be an uncomplicated fling—a few sizzling weeks before he went back to his life, and she moved on.

Until an accidental pregnancy changed her life.

Two years later, she’s made peace with the notion that Dave No-Last-Name will never be found. Until one summer day when he walks into her coffee shop, leveling her with the same hot smile that always renders her defenseless.

Dave Beringer has never forgotten the intense month he spent with prickly Zara. Their nights together were the first true intimacy he’d ever experienced. But the discovery of his child is the shock of a lifetime, and his ugly past puts relationships and family out of reach.

Or does it? Vermont’s countryside has a way of nurturing even tortured souls. The fields and the orchards—and hard won love—are Bountiful.

‘It was wild and ugly and beautifully and exactly what I needed. We consumed each other, and I forgot to be afraid.’

We adore small town romances as much as we do second chance romances….add a hockey player, a gorgeous little baby, a series we’ve loved from the very first book, add in the captivating words of Sarina Bowen, we expected Bountiful would be a winner…and it was!

‘One summer night I’d lain beneath him just like this, while we made a baby. My foolish, romantic heart liked the sound of that.’

We’ve read all the True North books and have fallen in love with every one! Each journey has been different and each has delivered the beautiful sweeping Vermont landscape, the heart-warming characters, the family unit and Sarina Bowen’s words which has been lush and inviting throughout.

Zara, the prickly bartender has been there from day one. Zara was the spurned friends with benefits partner of Griffin Shipley, and had always came across as a gregarious girl who had her barriers firmly in place, who teetered around on high heels tending bar whilst pregnant and never letting slip who the father of her baby was. She always felt so defensive in previous books. So it was welcoming to hear Zara’s side of the story which softened her immensely from the girl we had come to know.

‘He kissed my forehead so tenderly I wanted to die. Because moment like this didn’t last.’

Just who was the father of Zara’s baby, Nicole? It had been the topic of much town gossip, most pointing the finger at Griff Shipley who was now more than happy with the love of his life and now Zara’s bff, Audrey.  Nope, it turns out Nicole’s dad was the result of a short and lusty few weeks Zara spent with a man named Dave who was on vacation in Vermont. Their tryst was a strictly ‘no names, no personal information’ affair and Dave returned to his part of the world unknowingly leaving something behind….a pregnant Zara. Despite her best efforts, Zara couldn’t find Dave to share her news.

‘Watching her was like rediscovering espresso after a month of weak airplane coffee.’

Two years later, David Beringer, a professional hockey player, still retains memories of his time with the fierce, sexy woman he met previously, and heads back to Vermont seeking her out, hoping to pick up where they left off. Instead he’s met with quite the surprise when he finds out he’s a father. And…there’s no mistaking Nicole is his, thanks to the shock of matching copper hair!

‘I’d gone and one exactly what I shouldn’t have done – I’d gotten hung up on Dave, the ginger hottie.’

We adored this book. Seeing Dave move from a ‘strictly no relationships’, single guy with only Hockey on his mind, to a caring and loving Dad was a sight to behold. We could picture this big burly man so lovingly holding his cherished daughter in his capable hands.

The relationship between Dave and Zara moved at a realistic steady pace, as we would expect with the obstacles they needed to overcome. Trust, lifestyle and distance were all issues for Zara and Dave to work through and it’s not easy, with Sarina Bowen telling their story engagingly and heart-warmingly with dashes of heat, humour and a good helping of swoon!

‘I was starting to realize that getting older was just a lengthy exercise in getting schooled on all the ways you weren’t in charge of your own destiny.’

We so looking forward to our next trip back to the rich Vermont landscape to catch up with some old friends when Sarina Bowen pens the next book and we’re crossing everything that it’s Bess and Ben!

 “I’m glad I forgot us.”

Wow -without question- this is one of THE BEST books we’ve read in this -amnesia second chance romance- theme. It could’ve been full of clichés or over the top drama, but it really wasn’t. It was perfection! It was beautiful. It was heart-breakingly intense. It was incredibly romantic. It showed that no matter your past, you have the ability to change your life, deserving a second stab at it without judgement, sometimes what makes you YOU on the surface is not a complete nor true reflection of who you are on the inside. Muscle Memory features a wonderful hero who completely stole our hearts in every which way and a heroine who we admired and fell in love with for her strength and her beautiful soul. We lived and breathed their story alongside them.

“We’re two parts of a whole, always making up for the other one. We couldn’t survive without each other.”

The secondary characters entwined in this journey played a tremendous part creating a story that felt emotionally complete. In all honesty, this story felt new, unique and it was quite simply flawless in its exploration of Jayson and Delaney’s past and present. Whilst the journey this Author took us on had a melancholy and an initial ugly broken dreams feel, it was also hopeful, inspiring and had such depth. It re-affirmed the message that true love has no hidden agendas, rather it endorses the selflessness of love and sacrifice. That second chances of life are possible and the will to make that happen is a reachable goal.

‘If she couldn’t be the love of his life anymore, she would help him love life.’

This story of tragedy, love, re-discovery, healing and acceptance was vividly written without hesitation, whilst shining the light on an intense soulmates romance whose path of self-destruction came to an abrupt climax. What followed was a well-paced journey that had us crying, laughing through tears and clutching our kindles to our chests as we fell in book love.

“I don’t know her, but she’s in my blood and in my bones and in my body. I wake up reaching for her, but can’t remember her ever being there. I turn around to look for her, then realize she was never with me. She’s my ghost, she haunts me. I don’t remember her, but I know her.”

The ultimate gift of love has many nuances and can come in an abundance of guises such as friendship, loyalty, understanding and guidance. This story shows that second chances can make or break, that lives and people can change by either unexpected circumstance or by self- belief or even will power.

“You were…life.”

You know we hate spoilers, so this is a completely spoiler-free review as per usual where we talk feelings instead. Our feelings, well they were utterly-completely and wholeheartedly tied up in the words of this fabulously written romance by Stylo Fantome. This second chance story is one that’ll stay in the heart of any hopeless romantic. We’ll leave you with these words; the heart always knows!

“In love we trust.”

‘But love is only as strong as the people who fuel it.’

What a story! We can’t stop gushing about this second chance romance! We loved everything about it..….e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g! But then, of course the phenomenally talented J M Darhower wouldn’t just write a Hollywood, second chance love story with a fabulous couple and the most adorable little girl you could meet, we should have known she would own it! A wonderfully executed, well-paced emotional love story, with the perfect mix of passion, angst, heartbreak, sweetness and swoon, together with fabulous characters we can’t stop thinking about it. We found ourselves constantly torn between never wanting this story to end, yet desperate to finish to see how it would all play out.

“You’re the queen. I’m just the commoner.

We’d be here for days if we listed all the things we loved about Ghosted! This story exemplified the second chance theme. To experience the angst, the longing, the hurt and the pain of the characters having their hearts broken and trying to find their way back to one another, we need to feel…really feel the second chance element in order for it to grip our hearts and stir up those aching emotions and JM Darhower did that and more! Jonathan and Kennedy’s heartbreaking, heart-warming, painful and beautiful love story gripped us from the very start!

“I need you to know…that even when I completely fucked up, I never once stopped loving you.”

Jonathan Elliot Cunningham and Kennedy Reagan Garfield met at 17 when Jonathan walked into Kennedy’s American Politics class and straight into her heart. From that moment, the two became inseparable sharing their dreams and hopes.  All Kennedy wanted was Jonathan, all Jonathan wanted was to be successful actor, and take care of his ‘queen’. Kennedy owned his soul…that is, until his demons took hold and their world fell apart. But how? Why? How did they come to that moment in the present? What made Jonathan self-destruct the way he did? All will be revealed! Trust us!

‘I don’t know how I’m feeling. I’m a twisted up mess, a broken once-hopeful romantic, holding my heart in a clenched fist and begging him to take it, yet I’m afraid to let go and give him that kind of control.
Because the last time I gave my heart to him, he crushed it.’

How JM Darhower intrinsically wove the past with the present, and the clever and unique way in which she took us back to the sweet, swoony yet tumultuous four years in Jonathan and Kennedy’s young lives, simultaneously toying with our emotions was brilliant! Nothing felt contrived, with past and present flowing naturally ensuring we were so connected to Kennedy, Jonathan and Maddie in the present, left no doubt we would experience, first hand the utter torment and despair, as we’re taken back to witness the disintegration of the hopes, dreams and love of Kennedy and Jonathan. It tore us apart!

‘Your dream has become my nightmare, and I’m begging you to let me wake up.’

Ghosted radiated emotion, transfixing us through every heart rending moment.  Be it from the past love and starry eyes of two young dreamers, or the present with two people trying to deal with the past, attempting to repair their hearts for the sake of their little girl who was an absolute bundle of cuteness. And ohhh…those interactions with little Maddie and Jonathan will leave you in a puddle! Oh gosh, one scene in particular broke us as we shared the innocence of this cute little child and the utter hopelessness felt by a father trying to repair his past mistakes – that scene as well as others, had us in tears.

‘A day without you is going to be like a day without the sun. Don’t let her days go dark.’

Every moment in this story was heartfelt, beautiful, happy, maddening and saddening. JM Darhower breathed life into this theme, never flinching or sugar coating Jonathan’s demons, telling us exactly what was in his and Kennedy’s hearts, pulling us into her story, delivering realistic characterisation in Kennedy, Jonathan, Maddie and the supporting characters. Throughout Ghosted, she summoned our emotions in a story about the complexities of love – hopeless and hopeful love.

JM Darhower is an author who can convey a thousand words and a million feelings with one sentence, and once again, she has astonished us with her incredibly beautiful and raw storytelling. And oh that epilogue….! Prepare to have Jonathan, Kennedy and the adorable little Maddie steal your hearts!

‘You can’t get caught up and forget she’s sitting at home waiting for you. Because you live in a big, big world now, but hers is very small.’

Their instant connection turns into a midnight drink… and a whirlwind night of champagne, Chinese food, and the kind of conversation that only happens in romantic comedies. “Love is a wordless secret; It’s an inside joke. Only the two of you have to understand it.”

Beautiful and heartfelt, and once again, Renee Carlino has delivered the touching prose she does so well! Wish You Were Here is a thought provoking, poignant, and remarkable story about self-discovery and love. At its essence, this is a story about love. Whilst this isn’t a gut wrenching sob your heart out story, there were certainly times we read through tears, courtesy of some very moving moments in Renee Carlino’s latest romance.

“Do you believe in soul mates, Charlotte?”
“I think so.”

This author cemented our belief that people come into our lives for a reason, that each person we meet, be it good or bad,  becomes part of our fabric. Each person we give our hearts to leaves a footprint on our lives, responsible for how we live and love, and for Charlotte Martin, this couldn’t be more accurate when she meets Adam. Charlotte could never imagine the impact this man would have on her.

‘You broke his damn heart.’

There are those who will arrive in a blaze of glory, unsettling our foundations, forcing us to see inside ourselves, and for Charlotte, that person was Adam, and it was because of Adam that Wish You Were Here had us hooked  from the outset.  Adam was such an intriguing character and the way Renee Carlino set up this story, dangling those little emotional carrots, preparing our hearts, repairing our hearts,  left us breathless.

“Different people connect to different parts of our souls.”

Adam and Charlotte had a true connection and we felt it. It was as though they’d crossed paths in a previous life and found each other again. That sort of soulmate love, but the planets weren’t aligned and Adam and Charlotte part ways, though Charlotte never forgot the man who impacted her so deeply.

Time goes by and Charlotte meets a soulful and beautiful man named Seth Taylor, and oh boy did this man steal our hearts. Seth is the sort of man a girl dreams of and we loved him deeply.

And here is where Wish You Were Here lost us in some ways. Charlotte’s treatment of Seth was awful. Seth was such a sweet  character, that Charlotte’s actions towards him incensed us. There were times we felt as though Seth was merely a distraction for Charlotte. A means to while away the time while she secretly hoped her path would once again cross with Adams, and Seth didn’t deserve that. We felt Charlotte was insincere to Seth and it was as though Charlotte was continually on the defensive. Always quick with a hurtful jibe or bratty pout,  not only towards Seth, but towards her friend Helen also. When reading, we always put ourselves in the heroines shoes, to try and relate to her, to understand he feelings and action; sadly in this case, we couldn’t.

Now, that being said, we did love this book. We did become swept up in this story, which in itself was heartfelt. The two men in Charlotte’s life were divine, and there’s no doubt Renee Carlino kept us on our toes wondering how this story would play out. The writing was stunning, with Renee Carlino delivering a love story with warmth and honesty and two men our hearts ached for . And each made moved us for very different reasons.

“Your art, our memories, the memories people have of us. It makes us immortal. When you love someone, whether it be your family, friends, partners, whatever, it’s like planting a little seedling of yourself inside of their hearts.”

Renee Carlino certainly tugged at our heartstrings, but she also provided light relief courtesy of some fabulously witty secondary characters. The insulting banter and witty sibling rivalry between Charlotte and her brother Charles was priceless! Chuck needs his own book!  So whilst we did have issues with the heroine, there’s no doubt the story itself and the characters reminded us why we continue to pick up this authors books time and time again, and why we always will.
