BREAKING GIANTS by L M HALLORAN :: REVIEW

Standalone Rock Star Romance

SYNOPSIS
A rockstar romance unlike any you’ve read before…

When I meet Julian Ashburn, the reclusive frontman of indie-rock legends Breaking Giants, I do what any sane woman would do. Embarrass myself, then insult him. Because you only live once, right?

Besides, keeping my distance from the enigmatic, songwriting genius is an act of self-preservation. Julian is dangerous—a pool of kerosine to my pyromaniac. I have a weakness for broken men.

But sometimes the stories we tell and the songs we sing—about family, love, and ourselves—have to be rewritten in order for us to grow. Call it Fate, or stars aligning, or cosmic accident, but I’m about to find out that of the two of us, Julian isn’t the broken one.

The greatest love songs break your heart.

If you’re lucky, they heal it, too.

“It’s like a fairytale.”
“I don’t know any fairytales that are as dark and twisted as this one.”

Music owns our souls with rock star romances being one of our favourite things. There’s just something about this theme that really catches our attention, though to be honest, it’s also one we find can be a bit of a hit and miss, mainly because,  the focus sometimes sides heavily on the romance aspect, forgetting the all-important musical experience we crave. We love to be wooed as much by the musical feeling of the story as the romantic entanglement therein.

‘My body is a song – he knows every note.’

L.M. Halloran is a new to us author and the tagline of her synopsis especially grabbed our attention. How could we not be seduced by…’A rockstar romance unlike any you’ve read before’.. Yep, we HAD to read it with that statement.

We really enjoyed Breaking Giants (great name for a band by the way) and we’re pleased to say L.M. Halloran did deliver on both the romance and the musical aspect of the story, with a good dose of angst, though we don’t feel this rock star romance delivered on the ‘unlike anything we’ve read before’ promise we had hoped, though saying that we have devoured a lot of rock star reads over the years!

‘I watch, silent and empty, as my happiness leaves, slamming the front door behind him.’

The heart and soul of the music was most definitely prevalent throughout this story which told of the on/off sizzling attraction between lead singer of the Breaking Giants, Julian Ashburn and Rose Cunningham, who runs a coffee shop in Seattle and is the daughter of a music producer father and a famed singer/songwriter mother. Both of who, have sadly passed.

Did fate have a hand in Rose and Julian’s destiny? And if so, fate was given a bitch of a job with these two fighting every step of the way! Timing, feelings, commitments, the planets not being in alignment…it seemed everything conspired to put a cog in the wheels of this union.

‘He is a craving beyond my control. A mental obsession.’

Breaking Giants is beautifully written with us experiencing the soul searching and healing needed between Rose and Julian, both of whom were weighed down by baggage from their past and their push/pull relationship certainly delivered some angst!

27 year old Rose is the living legacy of addiction. Being the daughter of a deceased drug addict mother who instilled a belief in the singer/songwriter Rose that love was responsible for the death of art. That love was the killer of all happiness. A belief Rose carried from her young impressionable 13 year old self.

‘Music is the only lover that will never leave you, Rose.’

32 year old Julian, also has issues as a reformed alcoholic, he’s been through the mill, seen the downside of life, and even though he’s part of a hugely successful band, he prefers to be more of a  recluse, leaving the spotlight to his mates, his fellow band members Matt, Jackson and Nick.

We really felt the creative souls beneath these characters and we felt their pain, though we didn’t quite experience the emotional intensity we would have hoped considering the trauma both characters had lived through.  We loved the Seattle setting which brought a life force to the story, the secondary characters were delightful, and the epilogue delivered an unexpected surprise, culminating in perfectly beautiful way to end the story.  A highly enjoyable rock star romance!

LOVE ME IN THE DARK by MIA ASHER :: REVIEW

Standalone – emotional second chance at love

SYNOPSIS

Two strangers in Paris …
One passionate, earth-shattering kiss.

He was the artist upstairs
with the tantalizing smile and laughing eyes.

He was the devil inviting me to sin,
seducing me to dance in the bright moonlight.

He was desire and need.

When he touched me, my body sang.
My soul came alive.

But I belonged to another man,
and he didn’t want to let me go.

“Maybe in another life we’ll meet again and get it right. But whatever happens, you will always remain my one perfect memory, my one perfect dream. I love you, my beautiful man.”

Well didn’t Mia Asher just wow us with her words, so flawless, enticing, fluid and vivid. We were swept away in this heart-breaking yet hope filled love story. It was compulsive reading. Whilst for us, Mia Asher is known for her high angst and kindle throwing; this was neither. The balance was perfect and the mood went from highly emotional, to swoony to frustratingly heart-breaking to…..well let’s just say it was a highly passionate and exciting ride.

‘My arms outstretched, I’d danced to the vibrant music of life. I prayed for romance, adventure, the unknown. I wanted to fall in love and love to the point of no return. I wanted the turmoil, the stress, the upheaval, and chaos…’

Valentina is a wild fire, loving life and everything it has to offer- a girl with a grandiose life perspective.  Life is an adventure and she’s wanting to grab it by the scruff of the neck, wringing every drop of enjoyment out of it. Then she meets William and is swept away by this enigmatic man’s attention and love. Where Valentina’s joy was life, it’s a far cry from where she finds herself 12 years later, suddenly alone in an apartment in Paris, married and lonely, questioning every aspect of her life and marriage to William.

‘If Valentina were mine, I would have moved heaven and earth to get to her. Because when you finally find something worth living for, you fight until there isn’t one more drop of blood left in you.’

When Valentina finds herself at a crossroad the unexpected presence of the mysterious Sebastian throws a naked spotlight on her deepest fears and where her place is in life. A man who throws everything up in the air and awakens her to who she really is, who she was and who she lost.

‘She reminds me of the sea; untamed, unpredictable, but beautiful, so damn beautiful.’

Sebastian was divine and his story heart-breaking. Two lost souls meeting when the timing is everything but right. Or is it? Is it the much needed catalyst for healing and reawakening? Is this accidental meeting what sparks the ultimate unveiling of lies, deceptions and tragedy?

‘He kisses me like he’s dying and my lips are kiss last breath. It’s a kiss that rearranges the stars in my own little galaxy, setting my life in a new course, changing my destiny. And if I crash and burn like a falling star, what does it matter when for this brief instant I’m in his arms? For the first time in a very long time, there isn’t ice inside of me. Instead, there’s a bright, hot, blazing fire.’

We have to say the first half of this book had us enthralled and we were feeling every moment- every word. Whilst we absolutely loved it, there came a point where it went in a direction that felt like an abrupt story change that ended up feeling quite rushed belying the beauty and romance of what came before. It almost felt like the addition derailed it somewhat which is such a shame as we were absolutely loving this story. That being said, Mia Asher is an incredible story-teller and there’s a real accomplished beauty and flawless control to her writing.

‘This. This is life. This is love. Feel it all. Feel him and believe. Believe. Believe.’

5 stars!

“…it sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? That there’s only one person in the world who’s like really, completely linked to you through your DNA and who you’re supposed to fall head over heels in love with…”

Every so often you read a book that completely throws you off your usual reading experience and has you literally unable to part with it for even one second. You want to pause life. You want to stop the world from spinning because your mind is doing enough of that. John Marrs is a new to us Author and he has singlehandedly blown all other psychological thrillers we’ve read out the water with The One. There are no words to adequately describe how tense, how riveted, how shocked and how involved we were in this thought provoking, thrilling story. The writing was sublime and John Marrs achieved in mere short chapters what sometimes takes an entire book to do- we connected instantaneously with all the characters, with their stories and with the concept as a whole. It was a magnificent, intriguing and a somewhat very relevant story.

“So you don’t think that true love can exist between couples who aren’t pre-destined?’
“No, no, of course it can…..But those who have been matched often feel something deeper and more complete. The other person is literally their other half.”

With all the dating websites currently out there, what would you do if there was a scientifically based company that could match your DNA with another person, ultimately finding your soul mate, the one person who is your perfect match? No matter the age, gender, race, religion or nationality. Would you do it? What if you were married? Would you be tempted to submit a swab to know your true match? Would it make you question your life and love for your current partner if you weren’t a match? We were inundated with situations, thought processes and actions of character lives which made us really sit back and think on; what would we do? Not only is this a highly entertaining compulsive read, it also raises quite a few questions and throws a few warnings out there on the dangers of accepting what you’re told without questioning. Of meddling with what shouldn’t be touched. The concept is so fascinating and has been a fabulous topic of debate whilst we’ve been reading. The stories of Christopher, Ellie, Jade, Mandy and Nick had us riveted. Hearing and experiencing their thoughts, feelings, hopes, dreams, love and ultimately lives as each was ultimately marked from the day they sent away a swab to find their match was an – edge of your seat experience.

‘And in that moment , as they felt each other’s hearts racing, yet beating at exactly the same speed, they felt as if they were two halves of a whole.’

The amount of twists, eerie surprises and bang on situational double-crossings was phenomenal, it’s not often we are left open mouthed and applauding whilst reading. When you read as much as we do, we often find a case of knowing where a story is probably going to go. Well this was not the case with The One. We were shocked along the way in a continuously moving story that delved into the lives of five characters each with a common thread, each had a personal story where we felt as if we were voyeurs living their lives alongside them.

If ever there was a case for a book made into a film/TV serial then The One by John Marrs should be first in line. Without question this is one of our favourite reads and we highly urge you to go pick it up and go on a menacing thrilling journey which deals with what could essentially be real life, real people and a theme that in many ways reads to be quite topical of today’s evolving dating websites and experiences. You will not be able to look away, we promise! When we reached the last page we wanted to give John Marrs a standing ovation- what an incredible writer he is and what a unique and fascinatingly chilling story this was.

“You my love, are fucked.”

THE GRAVITY OF US (Elements #4) by BRITTAINY C CHERRY :: REVIEW

5 ‘Maktub’ Stars
Standalone in Series. Stunning and emotional story of love.

SYNOPSIS

Graham Russell and I weren’t made for one another.

I was driven by emotion; he was apathetic. I dreamed while he lived in nightmares. I cried when he had no tears to shed.

Despite his frozen heart and my readiness to run, we sometimes shared seconds. Seconds when our eyes locked and we saw each other’s secrets. Seconds when his lips tasted my fears, and I breathed in his pains. Seconds when we both imagined what it would be like to love one another.

Those seconds left us floating, but when reality knocked us sideways, gravity forced us to descend.

Graham Russell wasn’t a man who knew how to love, and I wasn’t a woman who knew how to either. Yet if I had the chance to fall again, I’d fall with him forever.

Even if we were destined to crash against solid ground.

**Spoiler-Free** Review

Love. The emotion that made people both soar and crash. The feeling that lit humans up and burned their hearts. The beginning and ending of every journey.’

Beautiful. Soul searching. Evocative. Heart-breaking. Inspirational. Hopeful. A favourite read of this year, no question. There’s so many honours we can bestow this book and its Author, because The Gravity of Us was one of those books that grabbed our hearts in its fist and held it tight whilst we shed tears fearing our hearts would break yet marvelling at the poetic beauty and grace of its love and dreams.

“Just because you smile and act free doesn’t mean the cage doesn’t exist. It merely means you lowered your standards for how far you’ll allow yourself to fly.”

We fell in love; book love. Brittainy C Cherry’s writing is phenomenal and her words burrow deep. There was one particular chapter when upon finishing it our kindles were put aside and whispers of exclamations were spoken as we were astounded and overwhelmed at its sheer magnificence and exquisiteness.

‘I wanted to be just like her. I wanted to be an odd character, a freak of nature. I wanted to stumble and laugh out loud. I wanted to find her beautiful disaster and mix it with together with my own mess. I wanted the freedom she swam in, and her fearlessness of living in the moment.’

Two opposite hearts. One feels everything, takes great joy in life, yet feels utter sorrow too. The other is conditioned to feel nothing, to push joy and beauty away in order to avoid extreme emotion and disillusionment. Vivid artistry goes up against cold cynicism and sarcastic honesty. Circumstances breaks the cycle and the beat of two beautiful hearts. Light shines on reawakening, acceptance and pulses with life. The opening of a heart is the most beautiful sight to behold when it’s seasoned with laughter and dreams. Shedding the rock solid shell that surrounds it. The light powering on -through the cracks, beating the concrete structure into submission.

‘The woman who felt everything leaned in closer to the man who felt nothing at all.’

We had so many tears, so many tears from the beauty and the humanity. From the despair and hurt. Our hearts galloped in tandem with the words from the slow build to the sudden crescendo. Fear stemming from the turns and twists, willing and yearning for something which seemed just out of reach.

‘She was the one thing off-limits, and the only thing I’d ever craved.’

Compelling writing made us melancholy. Joyous moments made us euphoric.  We were on a journey that pulled absolutely everything out of us and we urge you to take it too. A breathtakingly moving story of immense proportion.

“Air above me, earth below me, fire within me, water surround me…”

To Whom it May Concern,It was easy to call us forbidden and harder to call us soulmates. Yet I believed we were both. Forbidden soulmates.
When I arrived to Edgewood, Wisconsin I didn’t plan to find him. I didn’t plan to stumble into Joe’s bar and have Daniel’s music stir up my emotions. I had no clue that his voice would make my hurts forget their own sorrow. I had no idea that my happiness would remember its own bliss.
When I started senior year at my new school, I wasn’t prepared to call him Mr. Daniels, but sometimes life happens at the wrong time for all the right reasons.
Our love story wasn’t only about the physical connection.

At an airport baggage claim, Penny Darling looks up from her knotted mess of ear buds to find the sexiest hunk of man she’s ever seen. He’s got a military haircut, a scar through his eyebrow, and he’s rocking a pastel pink dress shirt like only a real man can. But Penny is on a man-free diet so she leaves the airport without succumbing to his delicious double-entendres…or his dreamy dimples.

PI Russ Macklin can’t take his eyes off Penny. As she sashays out of the airport with hips swaying and curls bouncing, he suspects they may share more than just sweltering chemistry. That suitcase she’s rolling along behind her? It looks a lot like his.

Because it is.

When he tracks her down, he holds her bag hostage in exchange for a date. Their night begins with margaritas and ends in urgent care, and Russ proves that Cosmo’s theory about a very particular type of orgasm was oh-so-wrong.

4.5 unbelievably fabulous stars!

‘I don’t believe in much, but I do believe that guys who fuck with their socks on should be taken out back and punched in the face.’

Nicola Rendell has asserted herself as one of our favourite one-click Authors. We’ve read every single book she’s published and we’ve loved them all. Picking up Just Like That was our weekend treat and we excitedly read it in one sitting, swept up in this well-written, hilarious, sweet, romantic and passionate story. Oh and we have to give props for the most fabulously written pet. We’re not sure how Nicola knows our dogs, but Guppy is pretty much a caricature of our very own Joey and Floyd!

“Every night at about 5:55, he starts to hump his bed. It’s really best if you don’t interrupt him. And he doesn’t like when you stare.”

Now, we hate dieting, it’s a necessary evil, but no way would we go on a man diet like our Penny Darling did, especially when Russ Macklin is about. Our jaws dropped and we came over all unnecessary because damn that man was the epitome of lusciousness. No question, we have a new book boyfriend for that coveted shelf and we’re not letting him go.

‘He’s dark and sweet and funny. Russ Macklin is all the best things at once.’

Just Like That had everything that makes us smile and laugh out loud, we love this Author’s sense of humour and comedic timing, and as for those hot moments, well hose us down and turn us over because we’re done. Hot actually, doesn’t even come close, we were on fire, baby!

‘He’s dominant, knows what he wants, and is damned well going to take it.’

A chance meeting changed the lives of two beautiful people who immediately felt an intense attraction. Two people who had their own lovable quirks and were set in their ways. But the heart wants what it wants and love -of the soul mate variety- can’t be denied.

‘…then here comes this little tornado of a sweetheart, with her volunteering and her home canning, and her small-town heart, and her fucking adorable aprons, and wrecks me.’

Now, we’re not huge fans of insta love and this romance is as insta as it gets and for that reason we did find it hard to connect to the romance aspect in the first thirty percent or so. However, the seed was sown and we ultimately fell hook line and sinker the further we got into this story. It was all just so bubble-gum pink with a Bunsen burner thrown into the mix whilst it continuously tickled our funny bone. Nicola Rendell is certainly a queen of sexy romantic comedies, of that there’s no question. Words to the wise though, if you’re anything like us you may want to google a certain term…you’ll know what we mean when you read this story. Our only advice….proceed with caution and make sure no one can see your google result *wink wink – nudge nudge*.

“We’re in deep, Penny.”

“I know.”

“I never want to come up for air.”

“Me neither.”

JUST LIKE THAT
EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT

Russ

She takes a sledgehammer in both hands and brings it down hard. The ball in the cylinder almost hits the top, but not quite. Penny raises one clenched fist in the air, cursing the ball through giggles.

“Your girl’s got some guns on her!” says the big guy running the ball-and-hammer.

I hand him another raffle ticket, and he tucks it into his front pocket, which is stuffed almost to bursting. My girl. It’s too soon for that, way too soon. But still, I like the sound of it. The ring to it. The simplicity of that beautiful fucking idea. “She sure does.”

Wham goes the hammer again, ding goes the bell, and the lights at the top come to life, slightly dimmed against the afternoon sun. “Yaaaay!” she cheers, beaming. “What’d I win?”

“Got your choice of a coconut,” the guy explains, holding one up that still has a $2.99 sticker on it from the grocery, “or a goldfish,” which he holds out in a plastic sandwich bag.

My snort sneaks up on me out of nowhere, but Penny is much more polite. In her eyes, though, I can see that sassy twinkle. What kind of shitty prize is a goldfish? So she chooses the coconut, smiling and laughing as the big guy drives a gleaming railroad spike into the top, and sticks a straw inside.

I grab my camera from around my neck—key equipment if you’re in the PI-location-scout trade—and make like I’m going to take a picture of her. At first, I have zero intention of taking a picture of her, because there’s a shitload of guys here who look seriously shady. That’s the best thing about local carnivals. Need a guy who “has the skills required” to unfasten an ankle bracelet? Carnival. Need to launder some money fast? Town fair. Need to get a sense of a crooked mayor’s potential known associates, criminal, personal, and somewhere in between?

Port Flamingo Boardwalk.

But in the frame appears Penny, beaming, holding her coconut up like the Stanley Cup. As soon as I see her in the frame, I get this instinctive desire to possess her. That woman needs to be mine. I grab a handful of shots of her. Flipping back through them, I get almost dizzy with her smiling face, adorable nose, her freckles, all that happiness shining back at me from the screen.

Fuck it. The mayor’s shady possible associates can wait.

She takes a long sip of the coconut water, and then she puts her glasses on her head and looks up at me. “You think this spot would be good? For the movie? Want me to show you something else?” She takes another sip through the straw, and her pink lips pucker up in a way that makes me think so fucking much of what she’d look like on her knees with her mouth working the length of my…

She really has no idea what she’s doing to me, none at all. “We’re not out of tickets yet.” I pull two more from my pocket. She pushes her bangs from her forehead, and I see the beginning of a sunburn. “But you’re getting some color.”

“I’m fine,” she says. “Don’t worry.”

She’s in the midst of trying to untangle her sunglasses from her hair—worse than the earbuds by far. I help her out, pulling the fine, long strands from the nose clip, being careful not to hurt her. What she doesn’t understand is that she makes me want to worry. She makes me want to take care of her. And I’ve only known her a day.

Christ.

“I’ve got to stop doing that.” She folds them up and jams them in her purse. She squints into the sun. “You’d think I’d learn to get the ones without the nose pads. But nope, never. I see a pair of aviators, and I’m powerless.”

“You just need someone to look after you,” I tell her and take my hat off. I tighten the adjustment strap a few notches and stick it on her head, the bill slightly to the side. She giggles a little and then repositions it. The hat makes it so she has to lift her face right up to the sun to see me.

“How do I look?”

I tuck a lock of her hair behind her ear. “Sweet as marmalade. Now, how about you, me, and that roller coaster? Perfect for the first plot point.”

She grimaces and then she looks away. “Ummmm…” She clutches the coconut to her breasts and presses her fingers to her mouth. “What about palm reading?”

I glance at the tent. Hell, no. “Not really my thing.”

Penny snorts and gives me a shove. “What, are you chicken? Big bad Russ afraid of a lady with a scarf on her head and Palm Reading for Dummies under the table?”

“Fuck, no, I’m not scared. It’s a bunch of bullshit, is all.”

She puts her hand on her hip. “You think the hero of your movie is going to deny the girl he’s trying to win over a palm reading? Really?” She wiggles her eyebrows. “Really?

Seriously, this woman. Every needle and poke makes me want her more than the last one. “All right, you little pistol. You’re on.”
