THE BRAVE LINE by KATE STEWART :: REVIEW

Standalone steamy and emotional friends to lovers.

SYNOPSIS

She is a five foot seven long list of things he can’t have.

He is a determined cop, desperate to keep his heart sealed behind his badge.

Michelle is a survivor. With a fresh perspective on life, she trades her tragic past in California for the coastal waters of Charleston. Fueled by a new career as a dispatcher, she’s determined not to let her scars weigh her down. She apologizes for nothing, especially her insatiable need for a certain police officer.

Rowdy is a newly minted sergeant dedicated to his job, but the life of a Charleston police officer has never been more dangerous. With his need to take order of a city spiraling out of control, the last thing he wants is an entanglement with a mouthy dispatcher. But, there’s just one problem. He can’t get enough of her.

As the heat rises between the unlikely pair, so does the tension.

Three months of summer was all it took to shake their foundations, rattle their walls, and bring them crashing down.

It was lust.

It was love.

It was real.

And it would have been perfect . . . if it wasn’t already over.

Note to reader:
This book has several elements and explores topics that some may consider triggers. For mature audiences only. Explicit sex, violence and language.

4.5 Sargent Sexy Stars!

‘It was the man. The man I’d had feelings for almost two years before he’d touched me. The man who made me weak with one look. The man who could control my body with just a breathy whisper. A good man with a good heart who was brave and spent his days protecting others while the world made it hard as hell. He was beautiful and flawed…..’

The Brave Line delivered so many elements we love in a story! Sexy dirty talking protective and possessive alpha hero, sassy heroine who gave him a run for his money, chemistry that was off the charts, steamy scenes that melted our Kindles, a smidgeon of suspense and a decent helping of emotion which had us tearing up, fabulous writing and a story that kept us glued to the spot!

Kate Stewart is a versatile author, we’ve sampled her rom-com and erotica, itching to read something more from her. The Brave Line synopsis hooked us immediately, suiting our current reading mood to a T, and it didn’t disappoint!

“I’m not a hero, period. For anyone.”
“Every time you put on that uniform and do the right thing, you are, no matter what happens.”

Randall Owen Day (Rowdy) is a 32 year old Police Sargent, lured into the Police Force in his youth after a painful and tragic event saw him and his three friends, April, Tyler and Kurt joining the Police to make a difference to the world. Years down the track, that youthful enthusiasm has given way to bitterness and cynicism as life on the streets, the loss of fellow police officers and friends together with an often thankless public have all left Rowdy rather jaded.

Michelle Long is a 29 year old dispatcher with the Charleston Police Department. She’s in the frontline taking calls, worrying about the officers and assisting the public head on. Michelle too is plagued by events of her past that haunt her to this day, though she’s come out tougher and more confident in herself and is a true survivor. Both Michelle and Rowdy deserve a second chance.

‘I would let love rule in my heart and take a piece of my soul, but I would never let its loss destroy all of me.’

Michelle and Rowdy hid a simmering lust fest for nearly two years and it’s only now Rowdy is returning her flirty advances but he wants filthy sex with her -end of- and makes her an offer we *cough cough* she couldn’t refuse…“As soon as I get you alone, I’m going to spread those legs and wrap them around my head and then I’m going to lick everything between them. And then I’m going to come down your throat. I warn you now, though, I’m fucking filthy.” And bloody hell, he sure was, but Michelle is no shrinking violet, she’s a sexual creature and Rowdy’s declaration sends her in a tailspin of want…as it did us!

This story really was a mixed bag. We expected steam, but bloody hell Rowdy and Michelle BURNED UP the pages; we nearly combusted! Then the emotion of the story hit and as it all unfolded with hearts being laid bare, we found ourselves experiencing a torrent of feelings for both these characters who carried painful reminders from their pasts, struggling to break down their walls.

‘She wanted to know me. I loved it. I hated it. I had nothing to offer. I didn’t need commitment, but I wanted her.’

Kate Stewart had our hearts in our mouths when she took us to the frontline with Sargent Day, capturing the heart palpitating minutes when these guys encounter life and death situations each day. She then held our hearts in her hands as Rowdy and Michelle came to grips with their feelings.

“I swear to God, the only thing I want to protect now is you. I’d go to war for you. I’d fight every goddamn battle for you even though you don’t need me to.”

We loved the dialogue between the characters which played such a pivotal role in our connection to them. We were right there with Rowdy and Michelle, learning their past tragedies, their fears, their pain and their flaws, and facing their demons and feelings head on, in real time. It was witnessing these pivotal moments in real time that ensured this story really hit the spot. What a FANTASTIC READ!

“Are you going to worry about me tonight?”

4 everlasting stars

‘…the search for Grace became an addiction, as he couldn’t believe she would be gone forever.’

We are incredibly aware that it’s easy to spoil this story for other readers so we won’t say anything about the story at all. We hope every reader gets to experience this beautiful story of love, grief, hope and heart-break as the S.L Scott intended. We don’t think we would have enjoyed this book as much as we did if we’d known what would transpire. So please go into this story bind.

‘Every spare minute that wasn’t dedicated to work, eating or sleeping he spent searching for his love.’

We don’t think soul mate romances come much more powerful than Missing Grace. It was overwhelmingly emotional, passionate, frustrating and heart-breaking. It was a reading race against time as we wanted to know what happened and why. We wanted Ben to find his peace, his calm, his happiness and his resolution. We wanted Ben to truly live again and for his heart to once more be whole. As for missing Grace; we teared up at the thought of what happened, fearing the worst. We hoped Ben’s relentless perseverance would pay off, in order to find an answer. We wanted this beautiful couple safe, somehow.

“You were taken from me.”

We pretty much read Missing Grace in one sitting, our emotions took a pounding and we were on tenterhooks worried were this story was going. We had so many questions and never felt truly safe. Once thing we never questioned though was Ben’s incredible love for Grace. Our hearts bled for this man who clearly loved with his entire being, never letting go of a love that would live till the end of time. Ben stole our hearts, completely. He was the heart and soul of this story. A beautiful man who never lost hope.

“Destiny is shaped by choice, not chance.”

‘The best kind of love is one that stems from friendship. One that grows, as it’s nurtured with patience and kindness, blossoming in just the time. All it has to do is withstand the forces of nature that threaten to drown it, pluck it, blow it, and burn it until it withers back into its soil. As if it never existed at all.’

And that is an apt prelude to sum up the anxious, dramatic, emotional, endearing, moving, frustrating, sweet and somewhat innocent story of friends, Chloe Rivers and her neighbours- twins, Devon and Gavin Rhodes. A friends to lovers, second chance story that broke our hearts, mended our hearts and ultimately stole our hearts completely.

Chloe was twelve when the Rhodes twins and their single Dad moved in next door. Despite their physical similarities it was clear the boys were polar opposites in temperament.   Devon, the broody more aggressive twin, who was like night to the Gavin’s calm, sweet gentler day. Gavin was the protector who always stuck up for Chloe at school when she was being bullied. An aspect that would bring them full circle in later years.

‘I wanted to follow my heart, but somehow along the way I lost my soul.’

Their young years were spent together, adventuring, getting up to mischief or spending time in the Rhodes’ treehouse doing their own thing. As the years passed, it would be Devon that Chloe would date, breaking something in Gavin that would deliver life changing, heartbreaking consequences for all involved, causing Chloe to flee her hometown, not to return until she was twenty two.

“Whoever holds that heart of yours is a lucky man. Just make sure you get it back soon.”

Gavin always had Chloe’s heart, so what made her choose Devon and what made her leave? Chloe’s return opens old wounds as repressed feelings are brought to the surface, and a love between two people that never faded, is tested time and time again.

K.K. Allen is a new to us author and we’re now eager to read her companion (Standalone) story, Beneath the Bleachers which follows a character we fell in love with during this book. This author really knows how to keep the reader’s heart in a vice with angst that knotted our stomachs.

‘When a girl gives you her heart and tells you to trust it, you don’t question it. You don’t waste a second. You just do it.’

We both said this book reminded us of those old favourites we loved when we purchased our first Kindles. Those stories we devoured that took us back to our youth, pounded our hearts and wooed us with their innocence. This book was so reminiscent of those feelings.

Told in dual POV, we were immediately captivated by the sweetness, angst and passion of Gavin and Chloe’s story. A story that perfectly captured the complication, complexities and confusing feelings and emotions Chloe and Gavin experience as they tried to navigate their way back to one another.

‘It was always him, even when it wasn’t.’

Up in the Treehouse certainly toyed with our emotions. There were times Chloe and Gavin’s story brought us to tears….and they were tears born of tenderness, love, loss, frustration and joy. We experienced it all. A beautiful story of loyalty, love, perseverance, about listening to, and following your heart. We were surprised a few times as events unfolded and we loved sharing this journey, even if our hearts did cop a hiding!

Unfortunately for me, when she left she took a piece of me with her – and it wasn’t until she returned that I realized just how big that piece was. ‘
‘I want it back. ‘

“I’m not a wolf.”
“No,” he said. “But you’re something.”

Be still our book loving hearts because we just read a story that catapulted itself to a place in our heart where our all-time favourite books live. T.J Klune captured every single one of our breaths, every heart beat and every nerve ending of our emotional being as our body mind and soul became completely tethered to a story of love, loss, grief, family and friendship. Of responsibility, honour and integrity. Of war, redemption and personal sacrifice. Stunningly written as if we were reading a journal, its unique and almost poetic prose astounded us. This is unlike any paranormal we’ve read in a long while and we took all the characters into our hearts.

‘But hearts are a funny thing; they beat strongly in our chests, even though they can shatter at the slightest pressure.’

No word from us can ever do Wolfsong any justice. This is the story that is everything, a story that was everything. A story that every reader needs to experience. Even if you’re not a reader of paranormal nor m/m we highly encourage you to give this story the chance to open your heart to a brilliance that will light you up with exquisite book love.

‘Sometimes, when your heart gets so full, it takes away your voice and all you can do is hold on for dear life.’

Wolfsong was an epic compelling read of grand proportion. We never wanted it to end and whilst this was a long book it felt like time barely passed from the turn of the first page to the last. Vivid imagery, powerful scents and an exceptional emotional grasp, it captivated us, thrilled us and left us awestruck.

“You confuse me. You aggravate me. You’re amazing and beautiful, and sometimes, I want to put my teeth in you just to watch you bleed. I want to know what you taste like. I want to leave my marks on your skin. I want to cover you until all you smell like is me.”

Wolfsong is primarily about Ox, a beautiful young man who has grown up being told he’s nothing by a Father who acts like anything but. Ox is different but not in any way other than the fact that he has a huge heart, a sweet vulnerability and an immeasurable emotional strength despite his home life.

‘Here was where I felt most at home. Here was where I wouldn’t be judged.’

Unbeknownst to him things are not what they seem around him and more exists than that of which he’s aware. His Mum is the only person he has in his life, their bond sweet and loving. Their life a hardship a lot of the time.

‘Joe was overwhelming. Everything was him. He was all I could hear and see and taste and smell.’

Everything changes when a family descends and moves in close by. A world is opened to Ox and he becomes part of something bigger he never dared dream existed. Ox meets a young Joe Bennett and he’s immediately pulled into a life where his eyes are opened to what exists in between of what is known. Ox and Joe’s story is one of laughter, tears and suspense. We fell in love, we laughed and we cried uncountable tears. It was thrilling, epic and awesome. It smelled of pine cones and candy canes. It grabbed our heart and soul.

‘It should have been obvious. It should have been obvious what they were, but then I wasn’t looking for the incredible buried in the ordinary.’

A WAR LIKE OURS by SAFFRON A. KENT :: REVIEW

A liar…a hater….a forbidden kiss. A gritty, raw standalone love story.

SYNOPSIS

A liar…

Three weeks ago, James Maxwell’s wife died in a car accident, but he hasn’t been able to tell his five-year old daughter the heartbreaking truth behind her mother’s death. Instead, he packs them up and leaves for a summer resort in upstate New York to spend a few peaceful weeks and to gradually break the news. But a spirited and outspoken maid at the resort has figured out his secret.

A hater…

After witnessing her mother’s violent death at the hands of her stepfather, Madison Smith has turned aimless and bitter toward the world—men, in particular. Her dead-end job at the local resort and her convenient girlfriend barely keep Madison from falling apart. When she meets James, however, she’s driven to protect his child from the darkness she sees inside him.

A forbidden kiss…

But Madison doesn’t expect to find that very darkness irresistible. Drowning in guilt and memories, neither does James expect to be drawn to the sharp-witted woman who has made his life miserable. When their tempers flare, a brutal kiss triggers a need that blurs the lines of hate and desire. As their lust spins out of control, they must decide if their attraction is worth fighting for or if love is the real enemy.

Author’s Note: This book is intended for mature audience. It has trigger elements: Abuse, self harm, death. 18+ ONLY. Despite having an HEA, this story doesn’t follow the usual or conventional rules. It’s rough, edgy and yes, difficult to read in places. The characters are broken and jagged and so is their descent in love. Please proceed with caution. Thank you!

“You push me and push me and push me. Every single moment with you is a battle.”
“You’re right. Every moment with us is a battle. A war. And I’m going to win this war, James. You’re going to lose.”

Well wow, we may be lost for words. A War Like Ours is the debut novel by Saffron A Kent and it completely turned us inside out. You know those books that shock you, yet compel you, because they’re so unexpected. The kind of book that you just know is going to be a marmite book. Well this is it. We still don’t know what we truly feel and have spent hours discussing this story. It’s a fine line between love and hate and we veered across this line touching both sides throughout. We love books that provoke a reaction out of us.

‘Famished. Insatiable. Mad. That was what I felt when I was around her.’
“Hurt me. You know you want to.”

First of all we have to say that we are so surprised this is Saffron A Kent’s first book. The writing was sublime, flawless and highly evocative. She does not mince her words and the emotion they induce are spot on. The quality of writing is why we continued reading this story and why we could not look away. We struggled to connect with the characters and we’re not sure we liked them all that much. That may sound harsh but it’s a testament to this Author that we kept reading despite this struggle. James and Maddison intrigued us, they challenged us and they provoked us. We loved them – we hated them.

‘I looked up, and the fogged mirror reflected a man – diseased and inhuman – with tiny streams of blood snaking down his torso. A liar. A coward. A disappointment.’

This is not a hearts and flowers romance. This is an ugly and quite frankly painful romance. Why? Because Maddison and James are seriously chaotic and emotionally messed up characters. Their relationship is beyond anything we can relate to. Whilst it’s dirty and hot at times it’s the twisted actions, extreme behaviour and emotional turmoil of these characters that left us reeling. We were absolutely exhausted by the end of this book, though we have to give this Author credit for writing a believable ending that fitted the story and the characters. Our hearts bled for these characters.

‘Where had she been all these years? She matched me in every single way. She was just as raw and untamed. Just as angry and selfish. Perhaps that was why she got to me. Because I saw myself in her, a better me, in fact. I saw how unfettered she was, and I desired that, to be unchained, guilt-free.’

Maddison and James are both damaged emotionally for reasons very personal to them. Neither have had a life smelling of roses nor many happy memories.  One could say that they have no idea or comprehension on what love truly is. Both have been starved of it. So when they meet, the recognition of themselves in each other, is incredibly visceral. Neither is convincingly looking to be healed nor looking to change or get better.  Their pain is what it is. This is who they are, who they believe they are. What they do recognise after a physical empowerment spurred in the other, is the possibility of love. A War Like Ours was in our opinion a unique story brilliantly written with a bruised and battered pen.

“Let the pain take over. Let it own you, turn you inside out. Let it win, Maddison. That’s the only way to stop this, to stop feeling.”
“Show me how.”
