MERCY by DEBRA ANASTASIA :: REVIEW & FIRST CHAPTER SNEAK PEEK

Standalone gritty romance
“27 days until I change how you perceive love.”

           SYNOPSIS

He taught me to kill. Murder is in my blood now. It runs through my veins and though I hide the monster I see in the mirror with ink, it doesn’t keep him from coming out.

My street name is Mercy, but I never show any. Except for her. I watch Becca, though she doesn’t know. She saved me a long time ago; the day my father killed my mother. Her bravery turned her into a target.

My father holds a grudge and knife with the same proficiency, and Becca is the focus of his hatred. And I’m the only monster who can save her.

‘If she wanted it, she could have it. My hand. My heart. My life. She took my hand, and that was enough.’

Wow! We loved this contradiction of a story! Mercy is difficult to categorise and in some ways had a bit of an identity crisis. If you were to go off the synopsis, you’d be thinking this was a particularly sinister, dark read – for us, it wasn’t. Yes, there were dark elements, especially in the last 20% of the book, however the story was essentially one of never ending love, acceptance, destiny, redemption and courage; interspersed with guffaw type humour, loads of emotion and some really sweet romance, all delivered with this authors fabulous ability for gripping and entertaining storytelling.

Mercy is the story of Fenix Churchkey and Rebecca Dixie Stiles. Two children who had a very brief interaction, yet it’s one that would stay with them and have a particularly lasting effect on the young Fenix (Nix). Becca and Nix were a destiny, a love story in the making – written in the stars if you like.

“Sweet girl, I’m covered in ink. I’m broken. Things happened to make me this way. I have trouble being with myself, so I can’t imagine that anyone else would want to spend time here.”

Fenix Churchkey is a man weighed down with misplaced guilt over the death of his mother. Vengeance be thy name, because Nix has a score to settle with his Dad, the man who brutalised him as a child and who was responsible for the death of Nix’s mother. We couldn’t call Nix an antihero per say, although there was darkness in what he did for a living, the man himself however was a protector, a loyal friend and all round sweetheart, driven to his actions by a punishing past.

“In my head she saves me.”
“You don’t need no saving. You’re real. Be yourself. It’s enough.”

The tenacious little Becca stood up to Nix’s cruel father and when she showed Nix kindness and uttered the words “Are you okay?”  Those words would stay with him forever. The story then shifts to fifteen years later when we meet the very mixed up Nix who is working as a hit man and Becca who is adrift in her life working at a bar. Nix always made a pact to never let Becca see him, to always protect her, thinking up ingenious ways to be a part of her life, to watch over her without actually being a part of it. Well, that was all about to change when Nix, at the coercion of his best friend Animal, seizes an opportunity for Becca to get to know the man beneath the menacing appearance, to know the man inside.

‘I could never meet her. I would never touch her. But I was hopelessly in love with her.’

Debra Anastasia didn’t rush the romance between Nix and Becca, instead treating us to a slow build, allowing us to get to know the characters before the feverishness of their feelings took hold, summoning our emotions through Nix’s past and his healing process. We loved this man! Nix begs the question, what is normal and he shows us how we need to dig beneath the surface to find the jewel. Their love story was intense, exhilarating, sweet, honest and beautiful, if not a little chaotic and crazy.

“Wait for me?”
“I thought you’d never ask.”

The secondary characters were fabulous – in particular the relationship between Nix and his best mate Animal. This huge big brute of a man who spoke so sweetly and sometimes had the hilarious demeanour of a little old lady won us over. Animal soon became a crucial part of the story and bloody hell, we cannot wait for his story and to learn who his love interest is, though we have some idea!

The only issue we had is one that readers will either love; or not -which is our case- it’s a personal thing, however for us it’s one that took us out of this story for a moment or two. We have a bit of a pet peeve when Authors bring their ‘online real life’ into their books with people and/or their conversations. The dialogue between certain characters in Mercy made us feel as though we were reading a Facebook thread, not living this particular moment of a fictional story, but thankfully Debra soon pulled us back in and overall it didn’t take anything away from our enjoyment of this gripping, sweet, intense and tumultuous love story that had our hearts bursting with romance one minute whilst fiercely beating with anticipation the next as Nix’s past crashes into his present!

CHAPTER ONE SNEAK PEAK

Chapter 1 of MERCY by Debra Anastasia

Superhero

Fenix

“Hold these eggs.”

My father handed me the white carton in the grocery store. The aisle was cold. I was cold. My hands were shaking.

“Don’t you drop those eggs, son.” His voice was menacing. But everything about him was menacing.

He’d finally done it. He’d killed my mother. Last night. This morning.

We were in the grocery store because we needed food. My sister was at my aunt’s house, which was good.

Because Mom was dead.

My hands shook more. I stared at them and willed them to stop shaking. I begged them to stop shaking.

Mom was shaking before she died. Seeing her like that was all there was. In this grocery store. In my head. My hands were clean now, but Dad had scrubbed them before he’d put me in the truck.

To come here. To get groceries.

I felt sick to my stomach.

Mom had been trying to make dinner. In the end all the food from the fridge had been tossed around the kitchen.

The squeaky Styrofoam container the eggs were in was giving me away. He was watching. He was getting even angrier.

Mom wasn’t here anymore. To step in. To stop him when he got this way.

“Stop shaking, Fenix Churchkey.”

It was a whisper from the scariest man on the planet. I tensed my muscles. There was no difference. Maybe it was making it worse.

“You’re the best boy, Nix. I love you so much. Just remember that.”

Mom. She was gone.

I watched in horror as the carton tumbled from my hands and hit the floor. The eggs made a sickening noise inside.

Mom was shaking before she died.

Before he murdered her.

I looked at his face, knowing he would kill me too. Not here. Most likely not here.

He liked private. He liked closed doors.

I knew not to make a sound when his hand grasped my arm so hard. He would squeeze right through the bones maybe someday.

I started to count my matchbox cars in my head. It was how I kept quiet. In a box under my bed there was three cars. The red car. The blue van. And the Hummer, my favorite. It was purple and…

“What did I tell you?”

His mouth was next to my ear. His breath smelled bad. His sweat smelled bad.

Mom was gone now.

At least my sister was at my aunt’s house. She was just a baby.

Dad grabbed my other arm, a little lower than the edge of my T-shirt sleeve. I watched as my skin came up between his fingers.

I felt the tears.

Crying always made it worse.

He was going to break my arms. Both my arms.

“Hey! Mister! Leave that boy alone.”

I felt chills up my spine. We were private. We liked closed doors. No one was allowed to know.

“I said let go! You’re bigger than he is. And let him go. He’s good.”

She was a kid. Like me. She put her hands on his forearm and pushed. I was stunned quiet. I was stunned stupid.

She wasn’t wearing matching socks and her hair was a giant halo of curls. She had a shiny purse with a stuffed dog sticking out of it and a fistful of coupons. There was a spiral pad with a cat doodled on it popping out of a pocket.

Dad took one hand off of me and lifted it. He was going to backhand this little girl. I put my hand up to block him.

I saw my death in his eyes then. You don’t stand up to him.

Ever.

Mom was gone.

The little girl didn’t flinch.

It would occur to me years later that she’d never been hit a day in her life. But not now. Now she was a superhero.

“You don’t hurt kids. That’s wrong.” She looked from his face to his hand that was still squeezing me.

“Go on, girl. ’Fore I change your mind.” Dad wiped his mouth with the back of his threatening hand.

Restraint.

He had it for her. For this little girl.

She frowned at my father and then put her lips to the side like she was fed up with him.

I felt my mouth drop open.

Then she was looking at me. Her clear blue eyes saw me. Saw through me. “Are you okay?”

To see this wild disrespect of what my father could do, what he demanded from Mom, from me was like getting hit with a wave in the center of my chest.

I felt my father’s warning hiss to me. This girl was the sun on the darkest horizon. She made dark turn to light.

I nodded. I was fine. We were always fine.

Mom was gone.

“Mister, you need to let go of his arm.”

The girl pointed at me. I knew what she saw. His fingers biting into me like teeth on a tiger. I had so many bruises all over my body that were in the outline of my father’s hand. This new one on my arm would only be unique because it didn’t feel entirely in the safe zone of how my shirts lay. I would wear a long sleeve if I could find it tomorrow. If I made it to tomorrow.

“I said for you to get. And mind your own damn business.”

The girl’s eyes went wide at his use of the word “damn”. If she only knew.

I wanted her to know.

She narrowed her eyes at my father. “You’re a bad man.”

The veins in my father’s neck were starting to pop out.

She was in danger now. And I knew I should protect her from him, but to not be alone for a moment. It was making me breathe, and I needed that so much.

“You’re about to learn how bad I can be.”

It was a low growl. It was his home voice. It was his closed-door voice. It was the voice I was never going to get away from. It was the last voice my mom heard.

Mom was gone.

“You’re trying to scare me, and I don’t scare easy. I sleep in my own bed with the lights off and no nightlight anymore.”

She lifted her chin at my father like a boxer just before the first punch.

“Dad, let’s go.” I spoke for her. Normally I never spoke. Not when my father’s voice had cracked its way into my soul. But I didn’t want to see the light in the girl’s eyes fade.

I didn’t know what a soul was until I watched my mother’s leave last night—or this morning. It was that eye light.

“Rebecca Dixie Stiles!”

The girl snapped her head around. Rebecca had to be her name.

“Over here, Dad! I need your help!” She crossed her arms in front of her.

I watched as my father shifted his weight and a muscle twitched in his jaw.

My father didn’t say anything else. He abandoned our groceries on the floor by the egg carton and pulled me with him.

I looked over my shoulder at her. She was waving down her father, who I didn’t get to see. “Dad! This guy! Wait!”

She reached past her stuffed animal into the sparkly bag and jogged after us. She held a lollipop out to me. I looked at it. The words “Hug Me” were printed on it. I stuck it inside my pocket.

Rebecca locked eyes with me then. “Be okay. Okay? Be okay.”

I nodded.

It just didn’t happen that day.

Or the next.

Or the next.

‘What a strange pair we are. The sad boy and the frightened girl.’

We’ve just been hit by the Henry Effect and we couldn’t be happier! After loving Nicholas’s story in Royally Screwed, we were craving his brother, Henry’s story after falling for him and his caddish way, desperately wanting know who was going to catch the attention of the party loving, uninhibited heir apparent. One would think it would take a strong, ballsy woman to tame him, not so, it befell the soul of a sweet, innocent and utterly captivating young bookworm to toy with the heart of the wayward Prince.

“Stories inspire us to reach high, love deep, change the world and be more than we ever thought we could. Every book allows us to dream a new dream.”

We were a little skeptical about the Royal Bachelor Reality TV aspect; unsure if it would work for us as we’re not fans of the show itself, so having it played out in a book…..hmmmm we needed convincing. And who better than Emma Chase and her innate ability turn the drab into something genuinely warm and funny, something meaningful with real grit, to do just that. This lady never disappoints. Her comical perception on situations is so incredibly entertaining and soon our reluctance took backstage to the innocent, witty, passionate and beautiful love story that was unfolding before our eyes. We were captivated, mesmerised as warmth spread through our hearts, giggles erupting from our lips.

“You are woven into my soul and you are wrapped around my heart.”

This book was quite different from the first. It would be akin to comparing the British Royal Family to the gregarious Royals of Monaco. Henry and Nicholas such individual characters, their stories were bound to follow suit, yet each both provided the fierceness of love, the comical inner monologues and all the elements that make an Emma Chase book a richly rewarding, entertaining and memorable experience.

“I would have been respected and admired, but Grandmother…he will be beloved. And if I have learned anything since the day Olivia came into my life, it’s that more than reasoning or duty, honor or tradition…love is stronger.” (Nicholas)

After Nicholas abdicated succession for love, it fell upon fun loving Henry to take up the reigns as the heir apparent. But for Henry, just a small taste of Nicholas’ life, leaves him bored out of his scone, looking for something to break the monotony. And so he receives an offer he can’t refuse. A chance to star in a Royal Reality version of the Bachelor. What could go wrong? A few weeks surrounded by a bevvy of gorgeous bluebloods all vying for his attention. Sounds perfect, right?

‘If I’m supposed to be the Great Royal Hope for my country, we’re all well and truly fucked.’

Little did Henry know he was to meet a woman who would challenge him in ways he didn’t anticipate and that challenge would come in the form of the sweet, innocent and utterly beguiling young Sarah Von Titebottum, who was accompanying her sister, Penny who is part of the show.

‘He could crush me; the foreshadowing is clearly written. It’s a tale as old as time: the inexperienced bluestocking and the bed-hopping rogue.
Bloody hell, I’m a trope.’

We adored Sarah and Henry, with Henry’s inner monologue giving us many laughs, courtesy of  his dirty witty thoughts tinged with the harmlessness of a naughty little school boy.  And Sarah, she was our kind of girl. How could we not adore this clever, sweet woman?

“I believe in you, Henry,” she says so softly, “I believe you can do anything…everything you set your mind to, because you care so deeply for everyone you meet. You will be amazing. I know it in my heart and to the bottom of my soul.”

Funny, passionate, sweet, sexy and brimming with pure heart stealing romance, we adored these characters, all the characters, implicitly, feeling more than satisfied with their story yet never wanting to let them go for a minute. We could read about these guys all day long!  So go on, lose yourself to this fabulous rom-com! We know we did and we love, love, loved it!

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT from ROYALLY MATCHED

Trying to control my shaking limbs, I turn around and lower myself over the edge, into the water. My cotton sleeping pants and shirt mold to my body, but they’re light, so they don’t drag me down. Still, I hold onto the edge with white-knuckled hands.
And Henry is right there, his skin slick and warm, his arm like an iron band around my waist.
“That’s a brave girl,” he whispers against my ear.
Henry shifts to his back, arranging me on his torso, like he’s my own personal royal floaty. Then he reaches for his drink on the pool’s edge. “Hold onto this for me?”
Smoothly, he pushes us off from the wall, and the water makes little currents against his shoulders and arms as we glide toward the middle. My trembling eases a bit.
“See?” Henry teases. “Water is your friend. Do you want to learn to swim? I could teach you.”
“I don’t know.” I eye the water suspiciously.
“Why are you afraid all the time?” he asks, not in a nasty way but with simple curiosity.
“I’m not. I just like . . . consistency.”
“Consistency is boring.”
“It’s safe. If you know what’s coming, you’re never caught off guard.”
Henry rolls his eyes.
“Why are you sad all the time?” I ask.
“I’m not sad—I’m pitiful. There’s a difference.”
He’s quiet for a moment, and the only sound between us is the gentle swish of water.
“Do you think Charlie Campbell lived?” Henry wonders. “Before he died?”
Droplets glitter on his lashes like diamonds. I try to focus on that and not the heartache wrapped in the question.
“I hope so. Sometimes, that’s all there is. Hope.”
Henry nods. “I suppose you’re right.”
I hold up his drink and toast, “To Charlie.”
Henry smiles softly as I take a sip, before holding the glass to his lips.
“To Charlie,” he says, then drinks.
He takes the empty glass from my hand and sends it floating away. Then he strokes his arms through the water, pushing us gently forward.
And then, he just . . . looks at me. My glasses fog and I slip them off.
“Fuck, but you’re pretty,” Henry murmurs.
Instinctually, my chin dips and I glance down at his chest.
“Hasn’t anyone ever told you that?”
I shrug. “Not really.”
“They should have,” he insists softly. “You should’ve been told every day how pretty you are—inside and out.”
And there’s a great swelling of tenderness in my chest, around my heart, that almost feels too large to contain. Not because of the compliment, but because of him. This beautiful, broken, pitiful prince. Was Henry ever told how brilliant he is? Kind and strong, generous, and good? I don’t think he was and they should’ve told him. Every single day.
Before I know it, we’re across the pool at the shallow end. Henry’s shoulder brushes the slick, tiled edge.
“There.” He stands upright and my feet touch the pool’s bottom. “That wasn’t so bad, was it?”
We’re close enough that I can taste his breath—smoky wood, whiskey, and man.
“No. Not so bad.”
And I feel like I’m in a daze, like I’m in a dream. Our gazes lock and Henry’s finger runs from my forehead, down my cheek to my chin, stroking back a damp lock of hair.
“Sarah . . .” he says, almost groaning.
He leans in closer, slowly . . .

“Give us a chance, Vivian. Run to me.”

So far we have A.D.O.R.E.D this series! The dialogue, banter, romance, angst, passion, emotion and drama left us breathless not to mention our brand new…’be still our beating hearts’… book boyfriend left us swooooning! Seriously, Keaton Thorne is ‘the best!’. Yes, we’re ‘air quoting’  Keaton, so get over it buddy!

“It’s just a story, V. We all have a story.”

We received an email from a reader who told us to drop everything and read this book! She thought it was right up our ally and she was right! We ran the gauntlet of emotions; we laughed out loud, we welled up, did some serious swooning over Keaton, met a new author whose work we’re giddy over, and we loved every minute!

‘I thought of the collection of New Adult books that were lined up on my Kindle, wondering if his pulse was thundering and his dick was twitching.’

Kimberly Stedronsky told her story with a perfect balance of realism, passion, drama and humour which had us feverishly turning the pages. The expressive way in which she delivered the humour in this story ensured we read it with a huge smile on our faces as we feverishly devoured every word!

“You have too much time of your hands.”
“I have too much Vivian on my hands.”

The prologue had a sudden impact, which drew us into the story, leaving us pondering how Vivan had arrived at that point in her life. Just what had transpired up to and after that point? Well, Kimberly Stedronsky deliciously drip fed us tiny morsels of her story to keep us tantalisingly teased!

Keaton Thorne! Wow!!! WE. ARE. IN. LOVE with this flawed and bloody gorgeous man!!  He was the complete book boyfriend. Good looking, sexy, strong, smart, charismatic, possessing a wonderful sarcastic wit and an enigmatic presence. Yep, he’s the stuff book boyfriends are made of and we couldn’t get enough of him. We think we fell more and more in love with him as the story progressed. He could definitely cause a city to heat and you really do need to meet this guy any which way you can.

“But you’re everything. You’re everything that I used to pretend existed out there for me., somewhere. You’re the beautiful girl who I would dream about when I’d lie awake at night, the one who’d make me laugh, piss me off, and impress me, all at the same fucking time. ‘

Normally we’re not fans of bringing real life into our books but this author handled it in such a way that it enhanced the story. The movie and book references were so much fun…well, everything was. As you can tell, we really did love it.

We initially adored Vivian and found ourselves empathising with her. Whilst we may have become exasperated by some of her actions and reasoning, we felt as though we understood her. It was who she was and how she handled difficult situations. She was a little reckless and a lot impetuous, but her heart was in the right place. By book two it was a different story and we wanted to throttle her. Her thought process, her flip flopping drove us to the brink and she somehow even managed to bring Keaton down which upset us deeply. Thankfully, Kimberly Stedronsky pulled it back and had us once again connecting with Vivian. It was a close call, the angst was aplenty, and we were walking a tightrope of going off this character completely but luckily that wasn’t the case.

Told in a dual POV between Keaton and Vivian, it was a delight to get an insight into their inner thoughts which were hilarious. Their banter was priceless. We were reciting many classic lines whilst discussing the books after finishing. In fact, we’re still giggling and swooning!

‘She was gorgeous. Stunning. She took my breath away and gave me air to breathe.’

It would be a true crime not to pick up this series. It’s fun, flirty, angsty, emotional and addictive and you get to meet the delectable Mr Keaton Thorne!!! Yummy!!

‘He needed me.  I needed him. Right? Isn’t this the way it goes? Isn’t this our blockbuster? I needed him to unbreak my heart, and he needed me to save him.’

For a fistful of dollars you can pick up and fall in love with Below Unforgiven, or for a few dollars more, you can grab the series! Either way, you need to get a hold of these books any which way you can because it would be a true crime to pass these up.

‘Everyone in town introduced themselves by name and relations. Apparently, I was no exception. Maybe it was a precautionary measure to thwart inbreeding.’

A real winner! The good…there was LOTS of that! The bad…well, there wasn’t really any bad, except wanting to throw our Kindles once or twice…..and the ugly…..hmmm there wasn’t any of that either, but we had to get that Clint Eastwood title in here somewhere. An absolute recommend from us!!! We’re still on book cloud nine from this one! Enjoy but remember…Keaton is ours!!!

On a side note, we’ve been asked if it’s worth reading the novella or delving straight into books one and two – we say – absolutely read the novella. It reaches further into the characters and gives you a deeper understanding of the dynamics of the relationships. It really is an added bonus to the series we wouldn’t have missed!

Vivian wanted the fairy tale.
Keaton wanted her.

Finally together, Vivian and Keaton are ready to become a family and have their happily ever after… but real life isn’t always like the movies.

As Keaton strives to regain his strength in the aftermath of the killings, Vivian supports him and plans for their lavish wedding. Their new daughter is the light of their lives, bonding them in a way they never thought possible.

Keaton is stunned when the script of a lifetime lands on his desk. He is convinced that he can both direct and star in the classic remake, diving into the project and working relentlessly to bring the movie to life on the silver screen.

Behind the scenes, Vivian is devastated as Keaton succumbs to his alcoholism. After an unspeakable night, she finds herself at Luke’s door, asking for his help when she realizes that she can no longer be strong for Keaton alone.

As Luke steps in to help mend their broken family, Vivian struggles with her heart, refusing to give up on Keaton. Tension rises as the couple sets the classic love scenes on fire, attracting attention all over the world with their onscreen chemistry.

When the credits roll, they must decide if their future is together… or if their love belongs on the cutting room floor.
