SYNOPSIS

Before. Miles “Pudge” Halter’s whole existence has been one big nonevent, and his obsession with famous last words has only made him crave the “Great Perhaps” (François Rabelais, poet) even more. He heads off to the sometimes crazy, possibly unstable, and anything-but-boring world of Culver Creek Boarding School, and his life becomes the opposite of safe. Because down the hall is Alaska Young. The gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, self-destructive, screwed-up, and utterly fascinating Alaska Young, who is an event unto herself. She pulls Pudge into her world, launches him into the Great Perhaps, and steals his heart.

I know I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, I do believe John Green is a writing genius! His writing is raw and gets right inside you, wringing out every emotion possible. He captures your thoughts, makes you think beyond the realm of the story and eases you into the mind of his characters without letting you out until you have turned the last page. My heart both hurt and I laughed reading this story. John Green is magic and wise!!!

There are so many layers to unravel In Looking for Alaska, we have longing in all its forms, loss and hurt, love and friendship. What it is like to be a nerdy youngster who feels out of place and has an uncertainty of self. The characters; displaying each one with their own unique handling and methods of coping.

His writing captured me yet again, I almost felt melancholy as I went on the journey. It is as though there are a million hidden messages within the words and when you find one you feel lucky and honoured.

The youngsters: Miles (Pudge) who has a passion for last words and biographies. He leaves his family home to find his “Great Perhaps” at a boarding school in Alabama. The Colonel; Miles’ roommate who is larger than life, a prankster yet a bit of a genius who is determined to better his life. Alaska; a beautiful and rebellious, haunted and messed up girl who is also extremely articulate and expressive.

This story is divided into ‘The Before’ and ‘The After’ by days. I immediately knew I was counting down to something “Great” my anticipation building, my emotions all over the place and the hairs at the back of my neck starting to stand on end the closer I got to the ‘end of before’. See I refused to read the synopsis before I read this book. I picked it up knowing not one thing of what it was about. I wish this could be the same for everyone who picks up Looking for Alaska; everyone who should pick up Looking for Alaska.

“Francois Rabelais. He was a poet. And his last words were “I go to seek a Great Perhaps.” That’s why I’m going. So I don’t have to wait until I die to start seeking a Great Perhaps.”

“The only way out of the labyrinth of suffering is to forgive.”

“We are as indestructible as we believe ourselves to be.”

“The Great Perhaps was upon us, and we were invincible. The plan had faults but we did not”

“So I walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane.”
