This is a review with a difference so we hope you’ll bear with us.
We were going to discuss the contents of this book but scrapped that idea because…well, it’s Colleen Hoover so you know it’s well written. Most of you already know Will and Layken and all the other characters from the Slammed Series (if you don’t then pick this series up now!) so you know you’re going to love them and you know from this authors writing style that this book is going to have heart….and lots of it.
And let’s face it, we know you guys would rather read the book for yourselves than have us tell you about it.
So instead, we’re going to talk about what this book meant to us.
We loved Slammed and Point of Retreat with all our hearts. What we didn’t realise until reading This Girl was how much we genuinely missed all these characters.
Sure, we knew what an impact these characters had had on us and how much they had become a part of our lives but being reunited with them again after a year was like meeting up with old friends and every minute spent in This Girl took us back to that moment when we read Slammed and Point of Retreat. You know the one? That “moment” we refer to at TB as “Book Love”. That special feeling you get when you’ve just experienced a story so beautiful, characters so enchanting and writing so magical that you feel it deep down in your bones and you know, without a doubt, it’s going to stay with you forever.
There are moments in life you can recall in a heartbeat. The ones where you’re transported back in time to a moment you want to relive because it left a mark on you. It made you happy and it brought warmth to your soul. It was so special you wanted to tuck it away in your heart and bring it out at a time when you needed to put that smile back on your face.
Well, the Slammed Series was that for us. We can recall every moment, every second of how we felt and the warm feeling those books brought to us when we were reading them. They will stay with us for life, of that we’re sure.
So, knowing we were going back to that was always going to feel special.
But we won’t lie to you. There was a certain amount of trepidation going into this for us. Was this going to simply be a retelling of Slammed? Was it just Slammed told from Will’s POV? Were we going to get bored and skim? After all, we know the story of Slammed already and we had previously heard Will’s voice in Point of Retreat so we knew what to expect from him. Yes readers, we were worried. We wanted to love it, but dreaded the possibility that maybe we wouldn’t.
We’re delighted to say all our fears were allayed about one chapter in. We were back! That same warm, wonderful feeling was back and we were once again basking in book love glow!
First off, we’re not going to refer to This Girl as “Slammed from Will’s POV” because for us that is too simple a term for how wonderful and beautiful this book was. We consider This Girl to be an “extension” of the series. A must have for fans of Slammed and Point of Retreat. It really does offer THAT much!
Sure, technically it is Slammed told by Will but readers it is so, so much more. We get new perspectives, new moments, new emotions and completely new scenes both current and past. This story is told in a back and forth composition which is so perfectly executed, so precisely timed that the reader is taken on a journey through Will’s eyes that will leave you spellbound in its beauty and telling. The epilogue is something book lovers dream about and being that we are both readers first and reviewer/bloggers second, we can tell you that this book completely captivated us and it’s the thing book memories are made of.
So, how much did we love This Girl? Let us tell you this. Ask us in a year…hell…no! Ask us in five years what we were doing at the time and how we felt whilst reading This Girl and we know, with absolute certainty that we’ll be able to tell you because this book left a mark on us to the point where we will be able to recall every emotion and every minute of how we felt whilst immersed in this story. Throw listening to I And Love And You by the Avett Brothers into the mix and we’ll be right back to April 2013 in the blink of an eye.
Colleen Hoover has the ability to write about moments and turn them into memories.
So, don’t hesitate. Pick it up. Devour it, and then be sure to share that memory with someone else, because after all, memories are better when shared
Synopsis

I have read a LOT of books in my life and I have to say this is my favorite series. These books made me feel every emotion possible. It was a roller coaster love story, an amazing one. The fact that Colleen Hoover tied music into the story made it that more moving. I am a music lover all the way and having the music listed there to relate to the story was a great technique. I don’t think it’s just about sex but the drama and lives created around the characters to feel more earthly and realistic. I get what that is, when characters become real and you think about them when you’re just going along through your day, doing your chores, going to work or school and they creep up on you and you have a conversation with them in your head. And then they stick around after you’re done reading, months later, and every time you go past your bookshelf and see the spine of that book you smile, thinking of them and how you felt being in their world, and touch the book just to be closer.
Reading that excerpt I GET IT. I get why you fell in love with these people, with characters who took on their own life because of how they made you feel.
Congrats Colleen Hoover!! 🙂 Because with writing that amazing, you’ll always be a part of your readers’ hearts and minds, way after we’ve finished reading your books.

Huge fan of Colleen Hoover! I like how she writes about teenagers and having to mature quickly. I have recommended this series to my sister so she can look at the world in a different perspective! I at 18 grew up quickly got married and bought a house had to grow up and take care of responsibilities of the options I chose! Keep writing great books! The review was great I don’t see it as Will’s POV but yet I do……reminds me of Walking Disaster it was Travis POV but yet you felt every emotion that he felt when you read Beautiful Disaster that you didn’t experience then! You learned a lot more for his POV and it didn’t seem like the same book! I’m looking forward to reading This Girl!

I couldn’t agree with this blog post more, in regards to the emotions these books evoke. I read a good deal of books from every genre imaginable, that I have almost become numb to the dramas that unfold. I downloaded Slammed almost a year ago and only read it recently after Shelly Crane posted on her blog that it was on her top ten reads of the year. It was the first time in, in a long long time, that I cried when reading. It was the type of love story that grabs hold of you and claims small parts of your soul. Even writing this comment, I feel the emotions starting to rise to the surface. So, long story short, I LOVE this series. I am almost apprehensive about reading This Girl, because I have to prepare myself for the emotional onslaught that I know is awaiting me…but in a good way. 🙂

I cannot wait for this book… I finally read Slammed and Point of Retreat when stuck with no power during Hurricane Sandy. I tried so hard to read slowly to waste time, but that was nearly impossible because both books just suck right in. I loved that these books were different than other romances and you can’t help but fall for Will and Layken.

I could not read the teaser because I have 3 more days to wait until I can read the book. Apparently, I don’t like being teased. Who knew? But I will seriously say that there are about 4 or 5 authors that I hold in highest esteem above all others. I have different reasons for each, they are the authors that I would move heaven and earth to meet and get that autograph in person. Colleen Hoover is one of those. I know a little about her as most of us do but what I know about her life before last year, since last year, the way she speaks on her blog, and her generosity toward her growing fan base only continue to awe me. She is by all appearances a loving, caring, humble, humorous, and uber talented woman who has it all in perspective. I am so happy for her and her success. I love the world that has been opened to me in the past year and a half by her and the countless other (mostly) indie authors who graciously share themselves and their talents.

It’s true that this series is already beloved by many so while there is some trepidation moving into the new story it’s not really necessary to read reviews about the plot. I had to reread the first paragraph for a second time, then a third. 😀 I got such a kick out of “her husband” and “his wife” **squeeeeeeeeeeee!! (in a totally girly voice, LOL)! I’m glad it’s not just a mere retelling of Slammed in Will’s POV. Although I’d love to find out what the characters are thinking (and in deference as well to Walking Disaster, which I know a lot of people love) it’s going to get old reading about a story which I already know about. Thank you guys soooo much for giving not just me, but for other readers too, that This Girl isn’t just another re-telling of Slammed and Point of Retreat. There are a lot of books which have been written in the same context of This Girl and I found most of them mostly of a retelling of what had already happened. So many thanks for giving us that reassurance that (though we know Colleen Hoover can write amazing and captivating books, there was that worry of what This Girl was going to be like) we will love This Girl just as much as we love Slammed and Point of Retreat

Thanks Feline. Yes, we’ve been a bit disappointed in some POV’s that are just straight out retelling and don’t offer more but this one does. Not just in the extra scenes and epi etc but in the actual story of Slammed. It just felt like we really needed this book to complete us, if that makes sense lol We closed the book feeling really satisfied that we had read something more and we left Will and Layken in safe hands and said goodbye….we’ll miss them but we were so glad we got to spend more time with them.

I have to admit I was late with reading the Slammed series, I just started Slammed a week ago and Point of Retreat yesterday. Needless to say, I absolutely loved both books. I’ve been reading books avidly for the past four months (I get into these reading moods) and these two books pulled me in like not that many before. I enjoyed Webber’s Easy and the Slammed series with all my heart. Other books were good too but these stood out – or stand out.
I feel in love with Will. He was amazing, loveable and such a good character. Lake was brilliant too. All the characters are extremely well developed and the story is so well written. There is no unnecessary drama, the characters react in a believable way and are likeable. And that is really important to me. Also the relationship between the two main characters was so well done. I could feel the chemistry and I could feel the love and connection. All in all, a series I won’t soon forget. And because of all this, I am really looking forward to This Girl. I can’t wait to read the story from Will’s pov. It is going to be amazing and I am counting the days until the book is available.

Wow the review for This Girl was beautiful and the teaser has me anxious to read it. I’m not that eloquent but all I can say is that I feel the same way about the Slammed series. I wasnt introduced to the wonderfulness that is Colleen Hoover’s writing until Hopeless. I have filed Hopeless away as a MUST re-read favorite. Not many make that shelf! So I decided to continue reading her work. I fell in love with Slammed. The true emotions that the characters of the book experiences, its as if I was experiencing them too. I myself had to grow up very early. I can relate to Will’s story. I also fell in love very early. I married the man I met at 17. I think we saved each other like I believe Will and Lake did. This story really touches my heart in so many ways. Reading Slammed and Point of Retreat has also open the door for slam poetry that I absolutely LOVED in these books!
I love this story and look forward to reading That Girl and many more titles from Colleen Hoover.. =)

I love this. I think this is what a different pov of the same story should be like. Sure it’s the same book with the same events, but there should be new things that happen (and I’m not talking about Will brushing his teeth) Things we didn’t know that would better improve our understanding of the story and would add to the original, and retell it. I just re read the SLAMMED SERIES in preparation for THIS GIRL, and boy did you say it perfectly when you said it’s like friends we are reunited with!! Can I just say, wow! I read Slammed last night in 6 hours. I totally could not put it down once I started. I burnt dinner (just a little) and ignored my boyfriend all night until I finished it in one sitting. I totally skipped our normal tv shows that I usually look forward to watching as I unwind and didn’t even care. The writing, the characters, the surprises as find out Will is Lake’s teacher and then her mom’s cancer, the touching moments where Lake kick’s a$$ at her brother’s school standing up for their decision on the Halloween costume,. I mean, we’ve all been the new person at school or work, we’ve all moved to a new neighborhood, most of us have had to face something hard with a friend or family member, we’ve had those weird dates where the hot guy hands us grilled cheese sandwiches — who couldn’t feel like they were personally in the book? And when Will tells Lake’s Mom that she needs him and he holds her as she cries, I mean OMG! But if all that was interesting enough, I found myself going back through the book just to read the poetry slam portions.

WOW, WOW, WOW, that doesn’t even cover how I really feel about this book. This book was fantastic, I cried and laughed so much over the past day that my body aches. I loved that she presented it instead as a way of them reminiscing of the past while they were on their honeymoon. I love how we get to have a chapter of them coming home at the end of their honeymoon and then the epilogue tied it all up in a beautiful emotional bow and the poem at the end “My Final Piece” being the final thing I read was just too much, I was down right bawling my head off by that point, there was no stopping the flow of tears, I could barely read the words because of the tears, this book was so good, it cant be missed. I love this author, I love all of these books in this series, I love Will and Layken together, I Love This Girl.
