Broken Rules collage

Review by Jenny & Gitte

Gitte: I thought this story was quite a sweet and sexy light read. Did it wow me, no not really but I really did enjoy it. Despite this being a bit of an exhausted theme it did stand out in regards to its choice of heroines.  I loved that this was a refreshing change to the trend of virginal heroines. Emerson is definitely not that. She is in fact a self-proclaimed “school slut”.

Emerson does not want a relationship; rather she wants no strings attached fun. She lives by her three rules:

1.       “Never sleep with someone that a friend has feelings for”
2.       “Never sleep with someone who is in a known relationship.”
3.       “Never sleep with someone more than three times.”

She makes no excuses for who she is nor the way she chooses to live her life.

“I’ve accepted who I am. The girl who will never become serious about anyone, who will enjoy life, have fun with guys along the way and never get her heart broken.” – Emerson

Emerson has her reasons for not wanting to get attached, she knows what they are and she is happy, for the moment, to stick to her rules in order to safeguard her heart and the people around her. But is she really though? In my opinion Emerson is in dire need of a firm helping hand and some intervention; by herself – for herself.

“There’s no point in having a relationship, because if they aren’t cheating they’re dying.”Emerson

Jenny: I also enjoyed this one Gitte, and my only negative is that on the odd occasion I felt like I was being “told” the story a lot of the time as opposed to “living” the story.  By this I mean in regards to Emerson being labelled the “school slut”.  I know she mentioned her indiscretions , but for me I would have liked to have experience that to really get to the nitty gritty of what she was feeling.  Now don’t get me wrong…I don’t need to have a book full of bed hopping but I needed to feel what Emerson felt…I wanted to experience her feelings when she was sleeping around, know her thought processes at the time when she left a guys bed after having meaningless sex .  Just wanting to feel her emotions before Jax came along and not be told.

That being said, I did like this and at times I really did feel for Emerson and together,  Jax and Emerson did manage to pull at my heart strings and I felt so much compassion for her situation and how she came about compiling her list of “rules” and yes,  I agree…she needed a saving from herself that’s for sure.

Gitte: Roll in Jaxon on his motorbike and cue those much needed self-realizations and discoveries, bringing on the domino effect where Emerson’s rules may just be about to be challenged.

“Damn, the sexual tension was thick between us. Three times with Jaxon Riley, would be phenomenal.”

Jaxon was romantic, level headed, passionate and protective. He knew what he wanted, so he was going to get it, and he made sure of it. However, how many times would you allow someone to question you, challenge your jealousy issues and let their self-destructive behavior come between you?

“This guy was ballsy and he was way too much like me.” – Emerson

Jaxon saw straight through Emerson from day one and battled to change this girl’s view on life and love. Their journey was definitely full of obstacles giving the reader whiplash at times.

So, I thought the secondary characters were great and I always love when twins are thrown into the mix, especially if they are the hot tattooed kind. My overall thoughts were that, yes I did enjoy it, but…I didn’t connect with the characters all that well. I didn’t think enough emphasis were given to character development and the skipping of time and scenes left me feeling as if I was missing something. Saying this though, this story was a good debut by this new Author.

“For as long as I live, I’ll never forget how your heartbeat feels against my chest.” – Jaxon

Jenny:  Jaxon was indeed her match. Jaxon was gorgeous. He was perfect for Emerson…she just had to believe it and see it.  In Jaxon she had someone who would challenge her, who had lived by his own rules, was very much his own man and yes, he wasn’t going to let anything stand in the way of what he wanted. He wanted Emerson and her “rules” weren’t going to better him. He was intent on showing her love and how wonderful that could be.

I agree with the secondary characters, loved them…. and the twin thing? Loved that too! Don’t get me wrong, I did like Emerson and Jaxon and there was a time or two this story really did get to me and I was afforded the chance to feel the emotion or get to know them as well as I would have liked.   In saying that I was invested in the book  did enjoy this story.

I do look forward to reading future work from this author and have to say the cover of this book is really beautiful.

Gitte: 3.5 stars
Jenny: 3.5 stars
