‘I’d promised myself a long time ago that I wouldn’t let love break me. If that meant avoiding it, that was what I’d do.’

I love how this author is able to transport me into her stories, she makes me feel as if I’m living it with the characters and this, together with the strength of love, friendship and family bonds at the crux of her stories makes it easy to lose myself in her words and Breaking Shaun didn’t disappoint.

Natalie and Shaun first meet up at the end of Freeing Asia and their paths cross once again in Breaking Shaun when Natalie leaves her home to make a new start, flatting with her cousin Nick.

This girl hasn’t had it easy, having to grow up pretty quickly and take care of her younger sister and has now decided she needs to really start living and soon makes friends with Asia and the gang feeling an acceptance and belonging she hasn’t experienced before.

Shaun Fuller, Asia’s brother, is a loveable manwhore. He doesn’t do relationships, he doesn’t even do an overnighter and he doesn’t have any desire to settle down. Life’s for fun. Life should be easy and all he wants from a woman is uncomplicated sex. His ideal woman would be one who wants the same thing without forming attachments.

Luckily for him, Natalie doesn’t do relationships either. She’s as opposed to love as Shaun and prefers casual sex with different partners, but has found a lot them lacking in the sexual satisfaction area. But Shaun knows his way around a woman’s body and there’s no denying the physical connection and chemistry between Shaun and Natalie. They absolutely sizzle and the heat could be felt off the pages. These two are extremely compatible between the sheets and experience mind blowing sex…and lots of it! When they both agree to a ‘friends with benefits’ deal it’s an ideal and uncomplicated situation right? Well in theory it’s a great idea but what happens when the heart becomes involved? Will one, or both break?

“I didn’t believe that kind of love existed because I’d never seen it.”

Natalie was strong, determined and pretty sure she knew of what she wanted provided she was the one in control. Shaun was laid back, easy going, took life one day at a time and appeared to have it all sussed. Whilst their outlook on life may have been different, they both felt the need to call the shots and watching them unwillingly bend to one another was so much fun and kept me thoroughly entertained.

Peeling back the layers of these characters, revealing why they had closed their hearts to the prospect of love was at times emotional as each had a moving story to tell which enabled me to better understand their hesitation and hoping they could move forward from their pasts and fears.

I loved both characters and thought they bounced off each other really well. The relationship between Natalie and Shaun was a slow build emotionally allowing me to experience the moment when feelings changed, and when the heart took over the emotional shift between the characters felt right and yet I wondered if they could overcome their obstacles.

“You don’t think I need you? I’ve never needed anyone before, but I fucking need you. Do you get that?”

I did see the twist coming I was worried about how I would feel about it but I needn’t have fretted, because EM Abel delivered it with such emotion and warmth and managed to completely win me over. This was a fun; entertaining and steamy read that pulled at my heart strings a time or two. My one gripe is that I would have enjoyed more ‘afters’. It felt a little rushed towards the end and ended too abruptly. I have to say, I’m really looking forward to Jay’s book next!
