SYNOPSIS
Burned by an unreliable source, Savannah Carmichael, returns to her hometown of Danvers, Virginia with her once-promising journalism career in ruins. Given the opportunity to get her skin back in the game by writing a patriotic human interest piece, Savannah turns her attention to the town hermit, Asher Lee, a wounded veteran who returned to Danvers eight years ago, and hasn’t been seen since.
After an IED explosion in Afghanistan took Asher’s hand and disfigured half of his face, he’s lived a quiet life on the outskirts of Danvers where the locals respect his privacy…that is, until Savannah Carmichael comes calling in a borrowed sundress and a plate of homemade brownies. When Asher agrees to be interviewed by Savannah, he starts feeling things for the beautiful reporter that he hasn’t felt in years.
Misfits in small-town Danvers, Savannah and Asher create a bond right away, touching each other’s hearts in ways neither thought possible. When a terrible mistake threatens to drive them apart, they’ll have to decide if the love they found in one another’s arms is strong enough to fight for their hard-won happily ever after.

‘The reward for serving his country was to live out his life in a lonely prison of his own making.’
Jenny: What a passionate, moving and beautifully sweet romantic Savannah and Asher’s story was was Gitte. To think we nearly overlooked this one because the title and cover had us assuming it was something entirely different to what eventuated.
‘Because she was his second-chance and his happily ever after when all hope seemed gone.’
The synopsis drew me in, the author captivated me immediately with her beautiful modern take on Beauty and the Beast and the absolute romance and emotion held me in its grip. I was completely swept away and loved it! I’m so glad we took the plunge, checked out the synopsis and decided to go with The Vixen and The Vet aren’t you Gitte?
Gitte: Absolutely, this is what pure beautiful romance is all about and I loved it. The cover and title does NOT do this story justice at all and I hope readers of romance pick it up because the story is so heart-warming, inspirational and swoon worthy! It could have done with an epilogue though!!
“This isn’t the sort of love that ends…it’s forever.”
The story of Savannah and Asher is truly a feel good read and I’m so happy we picked this one up, Jenny. It’s just what I personally needed after a very angsty read!
Jenny: Asher Lee, is a war veteran living a self-imposed exile for 8 years due to his physical disfigurement and emotional damage following injuries sustained in Afghanistan. Asher’s loneliness and his past stories, both family and of his time in Afghanistan broke my heart.
‘The problem with hope was that you were required to acknowledge the possibility of not getting what you desperately hoped for.’
I felt so much emotion for this man who had suffered and lived with his fair amount of pain. Asher had given up all hope of ever finding love, let alone happiness and his self-imposed exile from life was tragic. This man was a hero in every sense of the word wasn’t he Gitte?
Gitte: Yes, Asher has to be one of my favourite heroes because he can actually be found in real life but is uncelebrated because of his ‘imperfections’ which sadly most cannot see past.
‘The thing about surviving something truly tragic is that it changes your expectations forever….You expect nothing, and when something wonderful happens, you don’t trust it. You know it can’t possibly last.’
The hero returning from a war zone shunned by the society in which he lives. The visible battle scars viewed in horror, the perceived ugliness dominating rather than society seeing this man’s beauty, bravery and selflessness. Ending up forgotten and ignored. What we cannot see does not exist right?! Wrong! I thought Asher was beauty personified and I fell in love with this man!
Jenny: I loved Savannah. She had her own issues to contend with and was able to see the man beneath the scars and offer her heart to Asher when he so needed love and reassurance. She saw the passion, the heart and the love within the man and it was beautiful.
‘Savannah Carmichael, one of the most beautiful girls he’d ever seen up close, looked at his face. And she smiled.’
Although their love developed quickly, it didn’t feel insta due to the way the author developed the characters and the story, she made me believe it and feel it. You know, sometimes you just need a story with the right amount of angst, heat and drama that will stir your emotions and this this fit the bill perfectly. I totally agree with you about the epilogue. An epilogue would have completed their journey for me and given me closure.
Gitte: Savannah was a very interesting character; she was a tough determined journo but really, underneath that hard business exterior, she was actually very vulnerable and soft.
“I think maybe you stayed alive for me.”
She sees strength and passion first and superficial flaws don’t feature in her assessment of others. I found this to be so inspirational and it made me love her character which stood in good stead for the few times her decisions career wise annoyed me.
You’re absolutely spot on, Jenny. Sometimes we just need that feel good romance which actually bears a semblance to real life where you wish the outcome would be the same as that in fiction. Asher and Savannah’s romance was incredibly powerful and emotional. I felt every bit of their hesitation, happiness, sadness as well as the obstacles.
‘…his life wasn’t living, and she was a person of the world. She lived in the sunshine, not shrouded in shadows.’
It was beautiful, romantic, sweet and emotional. The life lessons in this story are so important to a society hell bent of flawless beautification to the disturbing point of obsessiveness.

Wow! I really enjoyed reading about this book. I think I would have passed it over, too. The author is unknown to me or one that I’m not familiar with & I cannot wait to dive into this book now. Thank you, I’m not sure my Kindle will be saying the same thing as I am going to be 1-clicking it after leaving this response. I’m going to be sharing this via FB, twitter & pinterest

Oh wow! We hope you love it too Jessie. Yes, the title didn’t drag us in but so glad we checked the synopsis on this one – something about it made us want to read it then and there. It’s such a beautiful story.
