SYNOPSIS
Breaking Up with Barrett is the first of five books about the Philadelphia-based, wildly-handsome English brothers who are all on the look-out for love.
(Except Alex. He’s a womanizing manwhore. And maybe Stratton, because he’s wicked hot, but super awkward around girls.)
Barrett English, aka “the Shark,” is the fair-haired, first-born of the English brothers, and the CEO of the oldest, most prestigious investment banking firm in Philadelphia. He rules the boardroom with an iron fist, refusing to take no for an answer and always getting his way.
Emily Edwards, a first-year doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania, grew up in the gatehouse on the outskirts of Barrett’s childhood estate. The daughter of his family’s gardener and housekeeper, she was always looking through the window of privilege, but forced to remember her place at the very periphery of the kingdom.
When business partners suggest that a fiancee might soften Barrett’s image over business dinners, he approaches Emily for the “job” of fiancee. And while love wasn’t necessarily on Barrett’s radar, he begins to realize that Emily always has been. But will his take-no-prisoners boardroom tactics work on the heart of the woman he loves?

“You were there.”
Gitte: Well, we do love our childhood friends to adult romances don’t we, Jenny. And this one is special because it was an eye opener for both our hero and heroine who had no idea of how neither felt nor the bond formed at such an early age. Breaking Up with Barrett was a real sweet and modern take on the old fashioned romance stories and I read it with a smile on my face and a bit of a swoon! Overall this was a quick feel good read which I’m sure runs parallel to many fantasies and dreams of if only’s.
‘Like the only girl who existed on the face of the earth. Like the only girl who ever mattered. Like the only girl I ever wanted….’
Both Barrett and Emily were very lovable characters. I have to say I really liked Emily, she was strong, mature and sweet. As for Barrett ‘the Shark’, well he was such a gorgeous man through and through and at no time did I question his actions as they all derived from a heart of pure gold. This man is pretty bloody special and sweet Emily brought out the best in him.
“You asked if this was real…This is the most real thing in my life.”
I really enjoy Katy Regnery’s writing; I find it to be flawless and beautiful and she really knows how to write sweet heartfelt romance! We’ll definitely be picking up the rest of the brothers’ stories won’t we, Jenny?!
Jenny: We certainly do G! There’s just something so special about a childhood friendship that sustains through the years to end up in love, even if both parties are completely clueless about the extent of their feelings….…sigh…we’re such romantic saps.

I enjoyed Barrett and Emily’s story. Emily was certainly the calm to Barrett’s stormy ways and their journey held the right balance for me. Nothing too angsty, lots of sweet romance, a few giggles along the way with a bit of heat thrown in made this one a nice, lighthearted and easy escape.

Kate Regnery certainly does know how to spin a sweet story with engaging characters that’s for sure!
