DRIVE (Fire on Ice #4) by BRENDA ROTHERT
4 September, 2014
SYNOPSIS
Years of training are about to pay off for hockey player Nikola Vereshkova.
A call to play in the big league means he can finally come through for those who need him. His relocation to Chicago comes with built-in friends – and one gorgeous enemy who was less than impressed with him after their first encounter.
Sadie Alexander knows all about the drastic measures men will take just to get laid. She’s not only experienced it first-hand, but lived to tell about it in her online column, Sadie Says. And even though she’s a die-hard independent woman on the outside, the recent marriage of her best friend has her secretly feeling more alone than ever.
Getting close to a foul-mouthed Russian hockey heartthrob was the last thing Sadie expected. And the timing couldn’t be worse since she’s sworn off of men for a writing assignment. The line between love and hate is eroding, and Niko and Sadie find themselves in deeper than they ever expected.
Could something that started out wrong end up being just right?

“Are you mine, Sadie?”
The Fire and Ice series has become one of my ‘go to’ when I’m looking for a sports themed (and especially ice hockey!) romance. Ice Hockey is my weakness and Brenda Rothert never fails to weave the thrill of the ice, the brotherhood of the players and transport me into the world of athletes as they lose their hearts to that one woman. Ahhhh isn’t that what sports themed romances are all about? The romance, emotion and passion for their sport as well as their women…it’s a winner for me and Drive delivered.
“I don’t know how to handle needing someone. But I do. I need you.”
In Drive we meet Nikola Vereshkova….let’s take a minute to let that name sink in and repeat it for good measure…Nikola Vereshkova. And what a gorgeous hot dirty talking hunky Rusky he was. Throw in the fact that he’s a professional Hockey player….and…well, gulp, turn me over…I’m done! Da!
‘The guy didn’t date women – he conquered them.’
Add in the sassy, no nonsense Sadie who has sworn herself of the dating game for 60 days as part of a deal to write a column for her newspaper, yep, that’s easier said than done when the sexy is around and I was in hockey heaven.
We first met Sadie in Edge and I really liked her character then. I loved her loyalty to Dell and I was looking forward to getting to know explore her story further in Drive and I just loved her.
The relationship between Sadie and Niko starts on shaky ground with Sadie initially being unimpressed by the very sexy and very irresistible Niko but their friendship soon begins to take flight as each realises they have chemistry to burn.
Brenda once again produced that perfect balance of emotion, heat and humour that I love in her stories. I revele d in exploring Niko’s backstory and the reason behind his hunger to succeed in the NHL, it was emotional and heart-warming. The relationship between Sadie and Niko didn’t feel forced or rushed and developed as a slow build up but certainly wasn’t drawn out and these two certainly heated up the pages!
“We all need someone, Sade. I want you to be my someone.”
I especially enjoyed meeting up with all the other characters in this series along the way and see how they’re doing. There is a brotherhood between these players and a kinship between all the characters that makes me feel as though I’ve just spent time with old friends and it’s an element of Brenda’s series that I’ve come to look forward to.
“It’s the best feeling, man, finding that one woman who makes you forget all about the others. Don’t fuck it up.” – Luke
I really enjoyed Drive although I would have preferred a little more time with Niko and Sadie towards the end as it did feel a little rushed after the build up but I’m hoping we’ll get more time with them in Orion’s book should Brenda decide to write his story…and I’m hoping she does! If you love a good sports themed romance with some very delectable men, grab this series!
