The evocativeness of Kitty French’s writing reeled us into Genie’s story from the onset. There’s no doubt about it, Kitty French is a spectacular writer. Her words sweep across the page in a vividness that had us living and breathing the theatrics, seduction and beauty of Genie’s Burlesque world.

The sensuality of the story, the sexual chemistry between this passionate couple didn’t just sizzle….it teased and taunted before erupting like a volcano taking us right along with it. Wow! This lady sure does know how to titillate and deliver on her tease!

Genie Devine was born to entertain. She oozes sensuality with a grace and innocence that screamed for Abel Kingdom’s attention! Despite Abel’s best intentions, he’s unable to ignore the effect Genie’s performance has on him. Her provocativeness aroused and awakened something in Abel he was loathed to acknowledge though he couldn’t deny the feelings of pure animalistic desire she evoked in him. This woman beguiled him. Genie was a true chameleon – innocent and demure one minute, sensual and seductive the next and didn’t she send Abel into a right spin!

Abel Kingdom, a successful British ex pat residing in Australia runs a chain of Gyms back home and returns to London with the intention of acquiring the theatre owned by Genie and her Uncle. This isn’t just any old theatre though to Genie and her Uncle, it’s their breath and their soul. For Genie it’s where she comes alive and the thought of losing it would be like losing a part of herself.

Abel is hell bent on acquiring it for his business purposes, Genie is hell bent on keeping it as part of her heritage and so the game of cat and mouse, push and pull begins with a vengeance.

The antagonism and resulting sexual chemistry between the pair was palpable! The attraction so clearly evident, we felt we needed a cigarette and a lie down once they succumbed to the inevitable passion which was extremely erotic!

Genie fell hard for Abel and we could sense that Abel fell hard for Genie. There was most definitely a sexual compatibility between the pair, but the emotional pull between them could sometimes get lost in the outward display of friction between the pair. Sometimes this element of the story could drag a little.

Abel could sometimes be quite cutting and cruel in his open assessment of Genie and her lifestyle, he was extremely judgemental and as his past was alluded to throughout we knew answers would come as to why he treated Genie the way he did. However; we felt that the emphasis wasn’t quite balanced enough.

“So what exactly are you saying here, Abel? I’m your upstairs angel, downstairs whore?”

Lucky for Abel, Genie sought to see inside the man to discover what lay underneath. There were times we doubted Abel’s feelings for Genie and Abel sorely underestimated the depth of the woman that lay beneath the glitz and glamour of her façade.

‘Abel could barely breathe. She moved with the grace of a ballet dancer, and she had the lush curves of a vintage Hollywood starlet.’

Genie was a fabulous read. We enjoyed it immensely. Kitty French took us into Genie’s world in a deliciously entertaining way. Her words kept us riveted and Genie held us captive. This is the perfect escape read. You know, the one you can just lose yourself in and forget about life for a while. Genie certainly did that! Enjoyable and recommended!
