A LOVER’S LAMENT by K.L. GRAYSON & B.T. URRUELA

Friends from childhood Devin and Katie’s story is one of love, heartbreak, hope, and loss. It’s about carrying someone else’s heart within their own of which time is no consequence. A story of courage led by your heart.

We knew we were in for quite a ride yet we never envisaged just how much we’d feel whilst hearing Devin’s voice.  Devin’s POV was incredible. It felt overwhelmingly real, passionate and so vivid we felt we were with him at ALL times. We smelt the stagnant air, we felt the dust in our throats and we heard the agonising sounds surrounding him.  For us; A Lover’s Lament became all about Devin’s journey. His POV was written with such heart, maturity and it became the reason we loved this book. We believed in every single word and cried so many tears, yet felt the inspiration, bravery, and perseverance. B.T. Urruela – without question – knows how to write from his heart.

‘We are fathers, brothers, husbands, and sons. We are dreamers, lovers, and God-fearing men…the majority of us are just like you…people dealing with something so traumatic, so heartbreaking, and so horrific that the heart never quite learns to mend.’

As gripping and real as Devin’s voice felt we have to admit we struggled with Katie’s at times. Her actions and attitude came across somewhat immature in comparison and at times she was unlikeable because of this; when put into perspective of the sombre mood of the book as well as the subject matter. She took on the ‘woe is me’ attitude which felt extremely out of context. Now, whilst we understand her heartbreak we felt her behaviour to be a turn off in parts. That is not to say though that she didn’t redeem herself, as she absolutely did and we took her to our hearts and felt her soul, honesty, and passion.

‘I’ve been treading water in a choppy sea of guilt and anger, and he just inadvertently threw me a lifeline. If it were anyone else, I’m not sure it would’ve made the same impact.’

Whilst we certainly enjoyed the first half of the book we have to say towards the half-way point the story gathered such momentum emotionally and story development wise we were suddenly unable to put it down for love nor money and from there on end finished it in one sitting. The beauty and poignancy of this love story became so much more and we loved it. A definite TB recommend!
