In One Day Soon A Meredith Walters writes with a flawless beauty that shines despite depicting an incredibly gritty, ugly and almost hopeless existence. This book had us sobbing through the entirety of story. We actually felt so incredibly sad we had to continuously put our kindles down; taking days to finish which is quite unusual for us. She perfectly conveyed the despair, struggle and intrinsic human instinct to survive desperation and overwhelming circumstances.

‘He had been my happy life. Even when things were ugly. Later he became my broken heart.’

An ultimate romance was found under dire conditions born out of protection and vulnerability only to stand the test of absence and time. Two hearts never healing nor forgetting. Two souls fused together which life couldn’t tear apart. It was beautiful.

“I look at you and I see the girl I would have killed for. The girl I loved to the ends of this fucked up, messed up world. But then I see your eyes and I realize you’re not that girl. Not really. Sure, I recognise the hair. The eyes. The dimple in your chin. But you’re different now.”

One soul saving and trying to heal another only to sacrifice itself out of love. Through this sacrifice the other soul wanders but never forgets. At the end of the day, Yoss and Imi saved each other and acceptance and closure was found in their love that still lived in their hearts. When you have nothing every little gesture, touch and comfort means the world. We fought with them every step of their journey with heavy hearts. We cried our way through as this is not an easy story to read. Especially not as we’re both Mums with sons. One Day Soon broke us in that respect and it made hard reading through our tears. This is life and we know it exists and it breaks our fucking hearts. This Author did a fabulous job of not being over-descriptive, just insinuating enough for us to see what she was trying to show us without words. Well done!

‘Yossarian Frazier wasn’t an overly complicated person. He was smart. He was thoughtful. He was generous and kind. He was loyal to a fault. And he was someone who had been forced to make choices that would shatter most people. I could see the fragments being chipped away little by little as he struggled to hold on.’

Whilst it doesn’t sound right to say we enjoyed this melancholy and somewhat despondent story, we did, and have to say it’s one of the most harrowing reads emotionally we’ve read in a while – as to why – well because – this could be true in its realism. One Day Soon is a story that really could happen and it was written with such care, attention and beauty highlighting inspiring selflessness, perseverance and benevolence in the face of adversity.

Because of this we struggled with an outcome we were not expecting which in a sense negated much of what came before. There really is true beauty in a non-traditional HEA and we wish that had been the case here in order to, in our opinion, stay true to the characters, the story and the poignancy of meaning behind the words. Yoss saved Imi – Imi saved Yoss – fifteen years of absence needed closure and re-learning to smile and fulfil a need. It was all there….until it wasn’t.
