“Beautiful people don’t exist, they are made.”

We do love a story that involves children and in Abruption we met two adorable children who completely and utterly stole our hearts. Riley MacKenzie beautifully captured the essence of the innocence, sweetness and cuteness of these kids and there were times our heart strings were well and truly pulled, making us tear up more than once.

Abruption was our first book by Riley MacKenzie and what a wonderful introduction. These ladies beautifully told a heart wrenching yet hopeful story about second chances, love, loss and sacrifice and we ate it up.

Dr Guy Hunter appears to have it all.  A promising career, a wife, a beautiful baby and another on the way. Then one day his life’s turned upside down when everything changes and Guy becomes a single father, raising two of the most adorable children you could ever meet. Balancing work and home life whilst dealing with the bitterness he feels in his heart.

‘I’d give this woman the world on a silver platter if I could erase her hurt.’

Jules was like a breath of fresh air that breezed into Guy’s life at a time he needs it the most. Jules was funny, loving and so giving to Guy and his children though despite her outgoing demeanour Jules is hiding her own pain and sadness which was heartbreaking.

“Let me become yours. Let me make you happy. Let me help you heal.”

There’s no doubt Finn and Maxie, Guys kids, are the heart of this story, with single Dad, Dr Guy Hunter being at its core and leaving us in awe of his selflessness and his soul deep love for his small children. This man was made to be a father, it came so natural to him and he gave his whole self to Finn and Maxie and when Guy utters…  “I’ve got you buddy” to Finn, we felt it and believed there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t sacrifice for his kids.

‘who loves ya.’ “You say this to the kids. From the first time I heard you ask them, I loved it. I love how their eyes light up, and they want to giggle because they think it’s silly. Because all they know from you, all you’ve ever given them…is pure and unconditional love. There is no better feeling.”

Jules and Guy complimented one another beautifully, both sinking and needing a life raft. The chemistry between Guy and Jules was intense and Dr Guy certainly had a naughty mouth on him!

“Every day, doll. I want this.”

Whilst there is no doubt Abruption moved us and we welled up at times in this story, however we did find the momentum slowed a little particularly in the middle. There were also moments when the story would build only to head off in another direction. Another small issue, which is something personal, was the use of the endearment ‘doll.’ It grated on us and came across a little condescending rather than endearing, however that really is a personal thing to us as readers.   It was clear that the subject matter was well researched and considering the topics dealt with in this story, they were handled with love, sensitivity and care. The love story was heart-warming, Jules’s big beautiful big Italian family engulfed us with their boisterousness and the children were exquisitely written‘ Who loves ya?‘ We do Finn and Maxie girl, we do!
