I miss television. I haven’t stepped foot in their living room since I arrived here almost two weeks ago. I leave the confines of Verity’s office and make myself a bag of popcorn, then sit on the living room sofa and turn on the television. I deserve to be a little lazy because tomorrow is my birthday, but I’m not planning on telling Jeremy that.
I turn the channel to HGTV and settle into the couch. I’ve watched about fifteen minutes of a house remodel when I finally hear Jeremy coming down the stairs. He pauses mid-step when he sees me in the living room. Then he descends the rest of the stairs and makes his way over, joining me on the couch. He sits in the middle, close enough to reach over and grab a few pieces of my popcorn, but far enough away that we aren’t in danger of touching.
“Research?” he says, propping his feet up on the coffee table in front of him.
I laugh. “Of course. Always working.”
He grabs more popcorn this time, cupping some in his hand. “Verity would binge-watch TV when she had writer’s block. She said it sometimes sparked new ideas.”
I don’t want to talk about Verity, so I change the subject. “I finished an outline today. If it gets approved tomorrow, I’ll probably leave in a couple of days.”
Jeremy stops chewing and looks at me. “Yeah?”
I like that he doesn’t seem happy about the thought of me leaving. “Yes. And thanks for letting me stay longer than I should have.”
He holds my stare. “Longer than you should have?” He starts chewing again and faces the television. “I don’t think it’s been long enough.”
I don’t know what he means by that. If he thinks I didn’t do enough work while I was here, or if he’s saying it selfishly, like he didn’t get to spend enough time with me.
The show ends and another one begins. Neither of us speaks for several minutes. It’s not that I have nothing to say—I have a lot to say. I just don’t know that it’s my place.
“I don’t know very much about you,” Jeremy says. His head is against the back of the couch and he’s looking at me, casually. “Have you ever been married?”
“Nope,” I say. “Came close a couple of times, but it never worked out.”
“How old are you?”
Of course, he would ask me that when my age will expire in just over an hour. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”
Jeremy laughs. “Why wouldn’t I?”
“Because I’ll be thirty-two. Tomorrow.”
“Liar.”
“I’m not lying. I’ll show you my driver’s license.”
“Good, because I don’t believe you.”
I roll my eyes and then go to the master bedroom to grab my purse. I bring back my driver’s license and hand it to him.
He stares at it, shaking his head. “What a shitty birthday,” he says. “Hanging out with people you barely know. Working all day.”
I shrug. “If I wasn’t here, I’d just be alone in my apartment.”
He stares at my driver’s license a moment longer. When he runs his thumb over my picture, I get actual chills. He didn’t even touch me—he touched my fucking driver’s license—and it turned me on.
I am pathetic.
He hands it back to me and stands up.
“Where are you going?”
“To make you a cake,” he says, walking out of the living room.
I smile and then follow him to the kitchen. Jeremy Crawford baking a cake is something I don’t want to miss.

Our Review
‘Everything she revealed about him has given me insight into the kind of person he is….’
If you’re wondering whether Colleen Hoover, the author responsible some of the most gut-wrenching emotional dramas and beautifully sweet emotional romances we all love so much, can pull off a gripping, horrifying and edge of your seat harrowing suspense-filled romantic thriller, you only need to read Verity to know the answer is a resounding YES! An eerie and unequivocal YES!
‘…it wasn’t gloom at all in his expression. It was despair.’
Colleen Hoover is a phenomenal author, as we’ve professed time and time again. We’re constantly astounded over the quality of the stories she delivers, and Verity has been added to that long list. Wow! How does she do it? This story had us living on our nerves, afraid yet compelled by the twists that unfolded. We had so many theories as the Crawford house and its secrets come to light through Verity’s disturbingly haunting words. Our minds were working overtime in this 5 star winner!
Verity warns in her manuscript that… ‘there is no light where we’re going. This is your final warning. Darkness ahead...’ And boy, there sure was! Some of it incredibly uncomfortable, some parts we read with a feeling of revulsion, at times bordering on abhorrent, yet so utterly addictive and twisty! Colleen has delivered an engrossing gritty story we know readers will devour!
Lowen Ashleigh is a writer, who has spent the past few months nursing her sick mother who recently passed. She’s reclusive, shying away from the public, doesn’t interact with her readers, is reluctant to attend book signings, and lives a somewhat lonely existence.
Lowen is summoned to her publisher’s office for a meeting which is shrouded in mystery. On her way, she meets Jeremy Crawford (who unbeknownst to Lowen is the man she is to meet that morning) under unorthodox and tragic circumstances. Their meeting would write the script for how the next few weeks would unfold.
‘I think the idea of me is better than the reality of me.’
Jeremy is the husband of Verity Crawford, a critically acclaimed famous author who was part way into her thrilling suspense series, The Noble Virtues when she was injured in a car accident. Jeremy and Verity’s editor want Lowen to co-write and finish the series. The full details of Verity’s injuries have been kept out of the public, only a handful of people know the extent of Verity’s injuries.
To give Lowen more background information on the series and Verity herself, Lowen is to spend time at the Crawford palatial home collating Verity’s notes, and it is whilst working her way through Verity’s office, that Lowen uncovers an autobiographical manuscript where Verity has detailed some candid moments about her husband and their children. Some deeply disturbing revelations!
‘My mother used to say that houses have a soul, and if that is true, the soul of Verity Crawford’s house is as dark as they come.’
As Lowen becomes disturbed by the manuscript, pausing to regroup and continue, we felt the need to do the same. Whilst Lowen is learning the horrid secrets within the pages of the manuscript, she is also fighting her feelings for Jeremy, a man who has known so much heartbreak in his life.
‘The most helpless person in this house is the one I’m most afraid of.’
Was Verity so apt at writing from the villain’s point of view in her series, because she knew the mind of a villain so well? Or was there more to the story we didn’t know? Well, you’ll need to dive in and find out for yourself, and we urge you to go in blind and prepare to be blindsided! We certainly were!
Though as different as this story is from what we’ve become accustomed to from Colleen Hoover, the feel of the story, behind the thrilling suspense, retains the trademark inner musings of the characters, and the wit which is interspersed throughout the sombre tone. Emotionally charged, sinister, evocative, fascinating and very addictive. We read Verity with a knot in our stomachs from the first to last page! What a brilliant read!
Synopsis

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.
Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity’s notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn’t expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity’s recollection of what really happened the day her daughter died.
Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife’s words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

This review is probably the best I’ve read so far! Every time I finish one of Colleen’s books, I like to read reviews to see if others have seen the magic just like I have. And you didn’t give the twists and turns away! My favorite book is still Hopeless, but I agree with the others who say it’s almost impossible to pick a favorite. Verity is SO different, but SO good! Sharing on Twitter now, thanks for the chance!

Great post! I haven’t finished Verity yet (got a late start so I’m only a few chapters in) so my favorite Colleen Hoover book is still a close tie between Slammed and Ugly Love (very different books but equally great in their own way). I’ve read and loved all of them but those are the two I consider my favorites. Shared on Facebook. Thanks for the chance!

I recently read “It Ends With Us” and wow… I am blown away. It is now my favorite book of hers aside frim Ugly Love. I love how Colleen made me feel like I am with Lily as she was experiencing her life with Ryle, not just a mere outsider reading her life. What she felt, I felt too. What an honest and eye-opening book. I recommend it to everyone. Domestic Abuse is somewhat being normalized and its good that Hoover used her influence to spread awareness on this issue. I love her!!!
Here is proof I shared it!!
