Our Review

“Are you ever gonna tell me what you’re running from?”

When August Ends by Penelope Ward was as emotional as it was funny, sweet as it was sexy. We thoroughly enjoyed our time spent with Heather and Noah. Great banter and laugh out loud moments. This was a wonderful story of sacrifice, healing, friendship, loyalty and ‘slow burn’ love.

“Something outside of myself sent me here to help you. I truly believe that. I feel like once I leave, my job will be done. I’ve helped set you on the right path.”

Heather had no filter and we loved her for this very reason. How refreshing would it be if everyone were honest about how they feel and what they want in life? Looking after the family business as well as her mentally ill Mum, Heather’s dreams and aspirations have taken a back seat. She’s a sweet young woman at only twenty years when she meets a mysterious, handsome and compelling man who has rented one of the cabins on their land. Fascinated, whilst developing a curious attraction, Heather sets out to find out just what this gorgeous man is all about and how she can get him to ‘notice’ her the way she has noticed him. The chemistry and tension was palpable as two people, despite their age difference, found themselves at a crossroads with a kindred spirit.

“You try to remain a mystery, but I can see right through you- to your heart. You show people with your actions what kind of person you are. You live your life with purpose, just like I try to.”

Noah is on a ‘time out’ from his daily life and we were dying to know the why’s and the how’s of his story. He had a broody intensity about him that was addictive whilst at the same time being completely laidback with a moody stillness. He was a conundrum that Heather wanted to solve. The will he won’t he, and the simmering heat was enticing and teasing. Heather was overwhelmingly ‘out there’ as opposed to Noah’s almost reclusive nature. Both so easy to fall in love with. Whilst the age gap was there, Heather’s maturity was on par when she wasn’t being lovably eccentric and almost childlike in her lack of filter.

“The thought of losing you hurts. But what hurts me even more is the thought of you ever regretting choosing me. I don’t want you to have any regrets. I don’t want you to have to resent me.”

Penelope Ward’s words had us quickly falling in love with this friends to lovers’ romance with an age gap. We do so love her writing; her character dynamics and her heroes are just swoon worthy! Heather stole the story for us though this time round, her outspokenness, sassiness and sense of humour was contagious and adorable. Her strength and compassion was wonderful and we rooted for her all the way through When August Ends.

“Let’s make some memories.”

Synopsis

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.

What do you do when a sexy, older man moves into your family’s summer rental?

Well, apparently, you make a fool of yourself—over and over. Things didn’t exactly get off on the right foot with Noah Cavallari. Our first encounter was embarrassing, to say the least.

But despite that, I found myself waking up every day with a newfound energy. Nothing exciting ever happened on the lake—not until Noah moved into the small boathouse on our property. He’d booked it for the entire summer…and I was still trying to figure out why.

When my mother became ill, I inherited the responsibility of making sure our guests were well taken care of. I should have been in college. Instead, I was living my best life…as a maid.

Dark, handsome, and mysterious, everything about Noah screamed forbidden.

I knew he was just passing through town for the summer.

I knew he was probably too old for me.

Yet, I was drawn to him.

Not to mention, he tried to save my life when he mistakenly thought I was drowning.

I wanted him and made no secret of it.

His own attempts to warn me away soon gave way to late-night moonlight chats by the lake. We were slowly easing into a friendship that was gearing up to explode into something I might not recover from.

Because he’s leaving at the end of the summer.

And I have no idea what I’ll do when August ends.
