When did you first know you wanted to be a writer?
I was about seven years old and my mum gave me a tattered copy of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. I was so blown away by that story as a kid, and when I discovered my own wardrobe did NOT lead to Narnia, I thought the only way to recapture the magic was to start writing my own stories.
Do you use a mood board for inspiration when you write?
When I write fantasy and paranormal I do use a mood board because I also pin ideas, plots, worldbuilding concepts to it as well. I also used a mood board when I began writing the Hart’s Boardwalk series to help me visualize what this fictional boardwalk town would look and feel like.
Have you got any funny quirks whilst writing?
If I’m alone I’ll read the chapters out loud to myself after I’ve written them and sometimes I get really into it. There have been tears.
If you had any advice for aspiring Authors what would it be?
It’s that old cliché – practice makes perfect. My advice to aspiring authors is to write as much as possible before either self-publishing or querying agents. Moreover, find beta readers to help you make your first manuscript the best it can be. As authors, we’re often too close to the manuscript, and a fresh pair of eyes can pick up on any plot or character issues. Also, concentrate on building a newsletter, Amazon and Bookbub following from the very beginning. They’re important platforms for reaching readers on new release days.
What’s a typical day for you from waking up to going to bed?
Feed the dogs lol. They come first. Then I get a much-needed coffee, sit down at the computer, and I write for a few hours. From there I take care of the dogs (I walk them listening to music so I tend to plot in my head, go over dialogue etc for the current book I’m writing), usually drop signed books off at the post office, and return home to write for another few hours. After lunch, I answer emails, work on book promo stuff i.e. blogger requests, teaser graphics, publicity/marketing requests from publishers etc, and check my book ads and adjust where necessary. The dogs need another walk (again more plotting in my head), and after dinner, I spend some time updating my social media platforms.
If you could give the younger you any advice what would it be?
To have more patience. I have a lot more patience now and tend to always think about the bigger picture and look at my life and career in the long term. When I was much younger I was more impulsive and made decisions based on the ‘now’ rather than looking ahead. Moreover, I’d get very stressed out if I didn’t receive a definitive answer to something important right away. Thankfully, I’ve grown out of that!
Which people inspire you?
My parents, my best friends, Margaret Atwood, Patrick Ness, Penny Reid, LH Cosway, Kristen Callihan, Tammy Blackwell, Angela Carter, Jane Austen, William Shakespeare, Khalil Gibran, Milan Kundera, Lisa Kleypas, JR Ward, Karen Marie Moning, Richelle Mead, J.K. Rowling, Lord Huron, Ruelle, The Cardigans, Amy Macdonald, Biffy Clyro… this list could go on and on.
What are the three things you cannot live without?
My family (this includes my friends and my dogs), books and music.
If one of your books was being made into a film which book would you chose?
On Dublin Street. I love the themes in ODS. It’s not just a love story, it’s a heroine-driven story about a young woman who is so paralyzed by grief she stops really living life to the full. And I love that it’s not just the hero that makes her realize this but his sister, who becomes the heroine’s best friend. It’s ultimately about family with this passionate romance at its center. That, plus the gorgeous setting of Edinburgh, I think would make it a great romantic drama for film.
What is your favourite indulgence?
I immediately thought of food. Specifically, double chocolate cake with cream. And now I want double chocolate cake with cream :/
Our Review
“I didn’t know,” I whispered. “I didn’t know it could be like this.”
This novella ticked all the right romantic and passionate boxes for us. We love Samantha Young and Hold On gave us all the emotions she’s known for, in this beautiful, sweet and sexy read. Despite the length and the insta love aspect, we enjoyed every minute and it felt like a complete standalone story.
“I think after everything you’ve been through, the fact that you still have the biggest, most open heart of anyone I know, makes you the bravest person I know. Christ, Autumn, it is so much easier to hide from love than it is to give in to it.”
Autumn is taking a break away from a life that’s not been easy. Childhood heartbreak and a history of bad choices in men. If it wasn’t for her brother, Killian she would’ve been completely alone and hurt in the world. Leaving her home in Glasgow she finds herself at a mountain resort in Montana, with her best friend and husband. Her plan is to, in a way, find herself again and what path she’d like to take in life. When she literally crashes into a tall handsome stranger on the kiddie ski slope, her path takes a surprising turn as it does for the man she crashed into, Grayson King. We fell in love with both Autumn and Gray, as we rooted for their romance and ‘forever after’ to take hold.
“I promise you there’s nothing to be scared of from me. This is the real fucking deal and I’m going to protect it with everything I have. Just say you’re with me.”
We fell in love with Samantha Young’s words, her wonderful characters, the scenery and the underlying message of to love hard and with abandon. The chemistry was intense and the passion hot as! The friendships and loyalties were beautiful and the emotion palpable. When a novella is as well written as this ensuring an instant character connection, you forget that it’s not a full length story and you end up with a smile on your face as you turn the last page despite wanting more!
“Tonight you’re mine, Grayson King.”
“I cannot fucking wait, angel.”
Synopsis

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Samantha Young…
Autumn O’Dea has always tried to see the best in people while her big brother, Killian, has always tried to protect her from the worst. While their lonely upbringing made Killian a cynic, it isn’t in Autumn’s nature to be anything but warm and open. However, after a series of relationship disasters and the unsettling realization that she’s drifting aimlessly through life, Autumn wonders if she’s left herself too vulnerable to the world. Deciding some distance from the security blanket of her brother and an unmotivated life in Glasgow is exactly what she needs to find herself, Autumn takes up her friend’s offer to stay at a ski resort in the snowy hills of Montana. Some guy-free alone time on Whitetail Mountain sounds just the thing to get to know herself better.
However, she wasn’t counting on colliding into sexy Grayson King on the slopes. Autumn has never met anyone like Gray. Confident, smart, with a wicked sense of humor, he makes the men she dated seem like boys. Her attraction to him immediately puts her on the defense because being open-hearted in the past has only gotten it broken. Yet it becomes increasingly difficult to resist a man who is not only determined to seduce her, but adamant about helping her find her purpose in life and embrace the person she is. Autumn knows she shouldn’t fall for Gray. It can only end badly. After all their lives are divided by an ocean and their inevitable separation is just another heart break away…
