Our Review

“You’re such a damned romantic. Sometimes when I see you looking at me, I have the feeling you’re not seeing me at all. Instead, you’re seeing the way you want me to be.”

One of my reading pleasures is revisiting SEP’s stories I’ve read and loved. Imagine when I discovered one I hadn’t read before! It was like winning the book lottery. Seriously, these books are like a nice warm hug, they’re like coming home and I loved this book so, so much! I loved Daisy, Alex, the circus setting and the circus animals…oh little Tater completely stole my heart!

This book was published over 20 years ago so the pop culture references may be a little dated, but you know what, it didn’t matter one iota! In fact, it was actually really nice taking a walk down memory lane and being back in SEP’s world is one of the best feelings you could experience. My book heart was very happy even though the unrequited love aspect, which was executed so perfectly, absolutely crushed my heart at times.

“I can’t resist you…you know that, don’t you?”

SEP has a knack of writing a really good hero. One who makes us work for his affection, for his love, they’re as tough as they are soft, as prickly as they are loving…once you scratch beneath the surface, that is. And Alex Markov struck quite the wounded hero who was certainly a bit of an arse, but to see him crack….oh just take my heart and shred it right now!

Daisy Devreaux, what a doll! Sure she could be a bit whimsical, and she had the tendency to lead with her heart – but scatty Daisy was an absolute sweetheart. There was a time I was reading with choked up emotion clutching my heart because Daisy’s hurt was so palpable I felt it, and I mean I really felt it. So absorbed was I in the moment I didn’t even realise the tears were streaming down my cheeks.

“But I don’t love you, Daisy, and you can’t begin to know how sorry I am about that because if I could choose anyone in this world to love, it’d be you.”

Although opposites in so many ways, there was a vulnerability in both the characters endeared me to them immediately. The arranged marriage had disaster written all over it but could it work? Was there a way the dotty Daisy could win over the cold belligerent Alex? Was Alex all he seemed? What did secrets and skeletons did he have hiding in his closet, and could Daisy find a way to ever forgive Alex? Oh so many questions! You NEED to read and find out for yourselves!

What I can tell you is that this story kept me glued to my Kindle from start to finish. The banter was filled with humour, the emotion of the story gripped my heart and those circus performances…those scenes stole my breath away! SEP awakened all my senses with the ambiance and visuals she created in those spectacular heart stopping moments! Breathtaking! Is there anything sexier than Alex Markov on a commanding horse performing his stunts? I’m not sure there is!

‘…if she’d thought to look back, she would have seen something that would have surprised her. She would have seen her tough, humourless husband grinning at her like a teenager.’

If you haven’t yet experienced the incredible work of Susan Elizabeth Phillips, you really are missing out. I could sit and read an SEP book every day. They’re emotional, passionate, sweet, humorous, swoony – well, everything you could want in a romance book! Another winner from one of my all-time fave authors.

Pretty, flighty Daisy Devreaux can either go to jail or marry the mystery man her father has chosen for her. Arranged marriages don’t happen in the modern world, so how did the irrepressible Daisy find herself in this fix?

Alex Markov, as humorless as he is deadly handsome, has no intention of playing the loving bridegroom to a spoiled little feather-head with champagne tastes. He drags Daisy from her uptown life to a broken down traveling circus and sets out to tame her to his ways.

But this man without a soul has met his match in a woman who’s nothing but heart. Before long, passion will send them flying sky high without a safety net… risking it all in search of a love that will last forever.
