EXCERPT from SOUTHERN CHANCE by NATASHA MADISON

“Kallie, we can do this one of two ways. The easy way or the hard way.”

“I don’t even know what that means,” I say, opening the door and jumping out of his truck. “Honest to God, Jacob, I have no idea what that means.”

The sound of his door closing fills the silent air. “Aren’t you tired of running?” he asks.

“Fuck you, Jacob,” I spew at him and turn to walk toward the creek. “Let’s get this over with so I can go home and forget tonight.”

During the whole walk to the creek, I just get angrier at the nerve of him demanding this shit and the audacity of him forcing me to do this. “I don’t know why we have to do this,” I finally say when I hear the creek. “There really isn’t much to say.”

“What are you talking about?” he says.

I see the rock, and I stop and turn around to look at him. I don’t why looking at him gets my stomach fluttering. I don’t know why there is suddenly a lump in my throat. Maybe it’s because he’s going to say things I don’t want to hear. “I’m talking about this conversation. It’s pretty much self-explanatory.”

“Is it?” He puts his hands in his back pockets, and his chest is so much bigger for some reason. Or maybe it’s the darkness or the shadows.

“It is.” Folding my arms over my chest, I say, “Everything that we had was a lie.”

“What?” he asks, shocked.

“So how long were you fucking Savannah?” I ask, ignoring the lump in my throat and the tears burning my eyes. “Was it the whole time?”

“It’s not what you think,” he says, and I shake my head.

“Eight years!” I shout. “After eight fucking years, all you can come up with is it’s not what you think?”

“Kallie.” He hisses my name, and I get even more angry. My stomach feels like a tsunami is in it with all the nerves I have.

“I’m here, Jacob.” I throw my hands up. “This is what you wanted to talk about it. Well, I’m asking my questions.”

“It’s not that easy,” he says softly and looks down.

“When did it happen?” I ask what I’ve been asking myself for the last eight years. “When? Was it in my face the whole time?” He shakes his head. “That’s it? That’s all you got?”

“All I can say is it’s not what you think,” he says, and I now lose the battle of my tears.

“When did you fall out of love with me?” I ask him softly.

“Never,” he says, his voice almost a whisper, and I have to laugh.

“Why?” I ask. “Why did you do it? Why didn’t you just break up with me?” My voice cracks, and he takes a step closer to me, but I take a step back. “Why, Jacob?” I put my hand in front of my trembling lips. “Why didn’t you marry her?”

“Because she wasn’t you,” he says. Standing right in front of me, he places his hands on my face as he holds me there with his eyes on mine. “I’ve never loved anyone but you,” he says, and the tears roll over my rims and onto his thumbs. He brings his head closer to mine. “I’ve loved you my whole life,” he says right before his lips hit mine, and my hands go to his waist.

I’ve dreamed of this kiss every single day, no matter how much I told myself that I hated him. He would creep into my dreams, dreams that were filled with kisses. But nothing can compare to his real kiss.

Our Review

“I wish I could go back eight years, and things would be different, but we all made choices that day, and we all have to live with them…”

Southern Chance is a warm-hearted second chance, young lovers, small-town romance and our first ever read by Natasha Madison. It was a sweet and swoony -easy to read- romance centred on buried secrets. We loved experiencing the Southern charm of this story and look forward to meeting more characters when their books release in later months.

“Do you love me?” I used to ask him every single time. “My heart doesn’t beat without you.” He used to say each time.

In Southern Chance, we meet Jacob McIntyre and Kallie Barnes, two young people desperately in love and already, despite their tender years, seeing a life together as they attend their senior prom. But things don’t quite work out as planned and an act of ‘betrayal’ sees Kallie fleeing her hometown, leaving behind those she loves – her Mum and Dad, brother Casey and of course, Jacob.

Fast forward eight years. Jacob is now the town sheriff, and Kallie, despite vowing never to return, is unexpectedly returning home with her best friend Olivia for their safety. Just what is going on there?

Both Kallie and Jacob have secrets, they must deal with their pasts but when you feel betrayed and hurt, it’s hard to tramp those feelings down and move on. Can Jacob and Kallie work through their pain and will small-town gossip allow them to forget the events that occurred eight years ago?

“Tomorrow,” I say softly, my eyes getting heavy. “Tomorrow I’ll work on not loving him.”

We do love small-town romances and Natasha Madison’s Southern Chance ticked a lot of boxes there. We would’ve loved to have found out what actually happened to the storyline of why Kallie and her best friend Olivia ended up back home. The fade to black was quite surprising and a tad frustrating. Southern Chance is a love story that started at aged seven, a painful farewell that played out at prom, and a tense reunion eight years later all made for a perfectly sweet and sexy escape! Now, we can’t wait to hear more about Casey….wow! When this cowboy says darlin’ we swoon!

Synopsis

Buried secrets never stay hidden in the South.

Kallie
I fell in love with him when I was seven. I scraped my knee, and he helped carry me inside.
Our love story was the talk of the town until a woman told everyone she was pregnant with his baby. The only rational solution was to high tail it out of town and never come back.

My best friend needed a place to hide, and you can’t get much more covert than my family farm, so I came back. For her. It was supposed to be temporary, and I wasn’t supposed to see him, but that’s what happens when you live in a small town where everyone knows each other.

Jacob
Being the sheriff in a small town was never my dream. My father died and my older brother took off, so I had to be the one to look after my mother. I stayed. I fulfilled my duties as a son and I protected my hometown.

My life wasn’t perfect, but I was content. Until I locked eyes with a ghost from my past, Kallie. I thought it was my imagination, it couldn’t be. I loved her most of my life, but now I hated her.

The town gossip mill was going into overdrive. I kept my head down and my mind off of the woman who shattered my heart when she ran away. She didn’t give me a chance to explain, it didn’t matter to her then. I didn’t matter.

A second chance is never promised, but now that mine is right under my nose, I’m not sure I can take it.
