Our Review

‘I may not believe in fate, but I believe in myself. Wonder what it takes to be the hero of her story?’

Swear on My Life by SL Scott is an emotionally charged story of second chances, sacrifice, and love. The way in which it’s written is truly beautiful and the characters have such depth in this second-chance love story, spanning years. We were hooked from the first page till the last despite a beginning with a distinct tone that had us thinking we were being led onto an entirely different path.

‘The lies he carried…
The burden he bore…
The secrets he swore to uphold…’

Swear on My Life begins with Harbor’s voice and one which sounded in our mind, a tad menacing and intimidating. To our surprise, this is not what was playing out at all. Rather it was the beginning of a beautiful romance that developed swiftly in intensity. What started as a quick heated attraction, turned into a slow emotional dance, only to disappear entirely until that second chance came knocking. It was quite an emotional and heart-breaking journey and we absolutely loved Harbor and Lark’s relationship which was a wonderful combination of friendship and romance, loyalty, and sacrifice.

‘She sees me, the real me, and shines a light on the darkest parts of my life.’

Lark is a sensible and conscientious college student, brought up by her hardworking single dad after her mum abandoned them when Lark was only two years old. Despite growing up with a supportive and loving dad under difficult circumstances in the less affluent part of town, he has raised his daughter to be kind, loyal, and loving, Lark lives with abandonment issues and a fear of straying off the path she is working so hard to stay on. Living with her childhood best friend, she foregoes partying for studying to achieve her dream of going to medical school. On that note, we must mention Lark’s two besties, we absolutely couldn’t for the life of us understand their friendship. At no stage were either of them very nice or genuine nor did they show any qualities that inspired or showed a close bond of any kind. In comparison, Harbor proved to not only be the most wonderful and selfless boyfriend, but he was also much more of a friend than Amanda and Dane combined, and then some.

“You’re the whole fucking universe. You’re where time begins and ends and every moment in between.”

Harbor was an interesting character. We started off being unsure of him and his intentions, however, those concerns melted away and we fell in love with him for everything he was and everything he did for love and for Lark. A man who lives with tremendous survivor guilt and secrets, she helps him find reprieve and clarity in his own life which has been sorely missing. Whilst he had a wonderful family and an affluent life, a traumatic event has not only left a dark void in his heart but also the burden of secrecy. Swear on My Life was such a beautiful story of soulmates, we do feel though that the middle part was a tad slow making the latter part feeling quite rushed for a second chance romance. However, saying that we felt every emotion, heartbreak, and joy in Lark and Harbor’s love story.

“If I were to ever share my life again, it will only be with you.”

Warm brown eyes that melted my unsuspecting heart.
A smile that knocked me off my feet.
His touch—raw electricity.

I never saw Harbor Westcott coming.

I was a small-town girl with big city dreams and more ambition than money to my name. He had everything—money, privilege, and the world at his feet.

Opposites in every way, but that didn’t matter. We were lightning in a bottle, and everything felt possible when we were together.

Life was perfect.

Or so I thought . . .

Years later, I’m no more prepared for him than I was the first time. He swears on his life that we are meant to be forever, but I know I can’t survive this man twice.
