Our Review

“Sometimes it’s hard, you know? Finding your place in the world when it feels like life went on without you.”

Until August by Emery Rose was utterly beautiful and -oh- so emotional. Food + Romance = a very happy Gitte and Jenny! We were in our element here as our tastebuds were tickled and by the end of this story we felt utterly stuffed full of spicy passion, devastating heartbreak, and breathtaking beauty. We kept telling ourselves:  “Don’t cry…don’t cry…don’t cry.” But cry we did! August and Nicola’s story will completely engage your heart, from the first till the last page.

‘Nicola was worth fighting for. Defending. Protecting. I had a feeling that falling in love with her would be easy, and losing her would hurt like hell.’

We weren’t quite sure what to expect when we picked up Until August other than knowing we love Emery Rose and her character-driven stories which are always written with raw emotion, depth as well as complex lovable characters. And that’s exactly what we got once again in Until August. Falling in love is so easy when we pick up a book by this Author.

“Life is a risk. But if you’re not taking risks, you’re not really living. And what’s the alternative?”

Second chances is what Until August is all about. A second chance at life, in love, as well as relationships. When faced with hardship, tragedy, heartbreak, or grief, how we react, how we survive, and how we try and ‘fix things’ can have a long-lasting impact or alter our daily lives as we know them. Both Nicola and August carry heavy baggage on their shoulders and are at a -figuratively speaking- crossroads in their respective lives.

‘August and I weren’t all that different. Everything we’d done was in the name of love.’

August is trying to rebuild his after taking a wrong turn which has had a devastating effect on his little family and Nicola’s life has stalled, unable to move on from a harrowing tragedy and the man she loves in order to live again and achieve her ultimate dream. The pair of them are navigating day to day with broken hearts but a fire in their belly when it comes to the passion they both have in common; creating exquisite food. When two broken souls recognise their other healing half and food is their foreplay, the connection and sexual tension is literally explosive and the overwhelming beauty of love shines a healing bright light in their darkness.

‘If the circumstances were different, I’d argue with her. Tell her that I wasn’t going to desert her. That she didn’t have to do this alone. I’d be there for her every step of the way. But when you love someone, you have to know when it’s time to fight for them and when it’s time to set them free.’

Until August is unbearably tender and beautiful at times. It’s raw and complicated in its affairs of the heart and it poses so many –what if’s– and –what would you do-? We fell in love with both August and Nicola, we had such compassion for them and their individual stories made our hearts hurt, but ultimately we rejoiced in their overwhelming love and their second chances at sheer happiness.

‘Sometimes love was about grand gestures. But, more often, it was in the little things you do for someone. It’s in the morning coffee you serve them. The quiet walks on the beach. The nights you hold each other close. ‘

I fell in love with two men. But I could only keep one of them.

When I met Cruz Vega, it was love at first sight.
He was my forever and always, my port in the storm, my one true love.
Everything was so perfect.
Until a cruel twist of fate derailed our future.

Now, we were navigating uncharted territory. Merely surviving without really living.
Despite the odds, I never stopped fighting for him. For us.
I had no intention of ever breaking the vows we’d made…

Until August Harper.
The hot-as-hell, tattooed chef swaggered into my restaurant and took over my kitchen.
Then, piece by piece, he claimed my heart, too. That wasn’t enough for him, though. He wanted all of me.

But as everyone knows… when you play with fire, you get burned.
And we are going up in flames.
