Our Review

‘This will be a crime of love. But for who?’

The Rising by Jodi Ellen Malpas is the fourth instalment in the Unlawful Men series, and we absolutely loved everything about it. Riveting, dramatic, utterly compelling, sexy, angsty, and surprisingly full of comedy too. Reading this series has been like watching a movie unfold such is the brilliant, flawless, and seamless writing by this Author. Once again we highly recommend reading this series in order as the continuing storyline finally comes to a head in The Rising and a lot of questions are answered. But not only that, our couples go through such a minefield journey on their own as well as together which is thrilling, angsty, heart-breaking yet beautiful too.

‘In this room, there are nightmares galore. We’re all fucked up. Disfigured. And somehow, that’s a comfort.’

Danny aka The Brit and James aka The Enigma is billed as antiheroes, but are they really? Or have we become so immune to their nefarious actions because come on, how super lovable and addictive are these men! They’re cocky sexy scallywags, they’re lock stock and two smoking barrels, they’re a comedy duo and we couldn’t possibly love them any more than we do! We hate them…. We LOVE them!

‘James can never walk away from The Enigma. I can never walk away from The Brit. With a reputation comes a responsibility – a responsibility to stay alive and keep your loved ones safe. You can’t turn your back on this life, and that’s a lesson James and I have both learned.’

Rose and Beau, well what can we say other than we love their growing friendship and the loyalty they show one another, their self-reflective journey, and their no-nonsense attitude when it counts. They’re dynamic feisty women and both James and Danny couldn’t possibly have been paired with women more suited and compatible as these two do not go quietly into the night. Beau and Rose are quite different, yet their friendship works perfectly and both really come into their own in The Rising. James and Beau still had a lot of unresolved issues both personally as well as together and we loved how the focus in this book stayed with them a tad more than with Rose and Danny. They needed that and we were right there with them as they try to find their peace in the never-ending chaos.

“I can’t lose you.”
This immense, powerful killer looking so uncertain carves out a piece of my heart.
“You’re not going to lose me.”

What a series, what an amazing collective array of characters, what a fabulous storyteller, and what a ride….we really don’t want to get off of this one! Our favourite series now by Jodi Ellen Malpas!

“We’ve risen,” I whisper. “We cannot fall.”

Synopsis

You can’t rise from the ashes if you’ve never been burned.

When notorious mafia boss Danny Black and lethal assassin James Kelly join forces to hunt down a mutual, elusive nemesis that threatens to destroy them both and take control of their city, they know they will be entering a deadly game. A game they must win if they are ever going to live in peace with the women they love away from crime, corruption, and death.

But peace is an illusion, love is a daily torment, and death will always follow them.

As power starts to slip from their grasp, enemies re-emerge, and old, personal demons return to haunt them both, they finally accept they can never leave their world if they want to stay alive. So they need to protect it at all costs. No matter the consequences. No matter the losses. No matter the pain. They must make choices no men should make. Kill more ruthlessly, love more fiercely, and hate with more rage than ever before.

They’re capable. Ready.

But nothing prepares them for the secrets they uncover and the betrayals they face. Or the personal sacrifices they must make to rise again.

Two men.
One goal.
No mercy.

This is The Rising
